Yasuko Kimura Soke - Tendo Ryu Sogobujutsu [Interview Part 2/2 - EN/FR/JP] - Duration: 21:42.Our family house had a dojo attached to it,
and in the beginning I wanted to practice Kendo.
When I told to my mother about it, she told me that girls practice Naginata.
There was a Dojo called "Shubukan", in Itami, and I was part of the first generation of its Naginata club.
I was in 6th grade.
From then I didn't stop practicing Atarashii Naginata.
From a very young age, at Shubukan during events,
many teachers would come to teach Tendo Ryu.
Even if they were not regular trainings of Tendo Ryu.
I went to university in Tokyo, and that's when I had the opportunity to practice Tendo Ryu.
Since I preferred Tendo Ryu over Atarashii Naginata,
I continued my training.
Then I started teaching at the "International Budo University",
on the one hand I was teaching Atarashii Naginata,
and also, thanks to extracurricular activities, Tendo Ryu on the other,
three times a week.
So I could train in many various ways,
and I kept that habit when I became a teacher myself.
In the end, I continued to go to the Shubukan twice a month
when the former Soke was there.
Since I was invited,
I used to go twice a month,
and I have to say that at the time I was practicing wholeheartedly.
Then...
The Soke passed away, and there was a three-year break,
after which I was offered her position by the professors of the comittee.
Well, the more I was practicing, the more I was making interesting discoveries,
and the true feeling of satisfaction it brought me was appealing to me.
In competitions [Atarashii Naginata], you have to win,
it's the goal you have to reach,
but it was not really bringing me pleasure.
No, actually, my only experience of modern Budo, in a way,
is from Ogasawara Ryu's ceremonies when I was studying at university.
It has a strict code that requires students, whatever their activity, that they learn how to move around according to protocol.
So I was taking those lessons myself, too.
The practice of Tendo Ryu and Budo are indeed at the center of my life.
My mother herself graduated from the "Busen" training center (ancient pro school specialized in martial arts),
I always had a deep respect for her and here righteousness,
and I practiced Budo with a desire to get as close as possible to that character I admire.
That's why, well...
I want everybody to see me as an active and impeccable practitioner.
That's, I think, something that is allowed by the practice of Tendo Ryu,
and I wish to pass those values on to my students.
Currently, they all tell me that the lessons are nice,
so I am very happy.
When it comes to Kobudo, and depending on what you study,
were you a beginner that came for a try,
or, of course, a more experienced practitioner,
I consider, as a teacher, that there are always so many things to learn.
Actually, my students give me their opinion when they notice something,
for instance when my posture is not correct,
they don't hesitate to tell me,
so it makes me think about the way I teach,
and for me today, it is very interesting,
and quite moving.
And in the end, thanks to that emotion...
I think that I become more aware of myself and of the teachings that my lessons bring me.
Yes, I can feel when someone is under the weather,
and that's not specifically thanks to the practice of Budo,
but I developed a sensibility.
I think that with some training we can overcome our negative thoughts,
but to explain such a thing to people...
it is very difficult, because each individual has their own emotional outlet, or stress-relieving method,
but I think that the joy you feel when swinging the Tachi (long sword) and the Naginata
and the bond that links you with your partner,
that can bring you some peace when you're troubled.
It's something you have to pay attention to,
not only as an instructor,
but also to one another, and that's how you mutually develop your sensibility.
At "Busen", I mean, at the Butoku Kai, Naginata was taught as an academic subject.
As for Tendo Ryu, it was transmitted from master to apprentice at the time.
but it was abandoned when Naginata became an academic subject.
Professor Mitamura Chiyo, who was teaching at the Butoku Kai, tried to oppose that change,
and she resigned her seat in the organization
to create her own private lessons by herself.
Well, it's true that wood used today is different from the old day; it's not dried enough and sometimes it warps.
Even though their prices went up, wooden weapons lose their shape quicker,
so much so that the Hozoin school bought a plot of land in the mountains last year to plant oak trees,
so that in about 50 years they can produce quality spears.
Transporting those long weapons is also an issue, both in Japan and abroad.
That's why...
they could think of weapons that could be taken apart, or something like this.
But for Naginata, we use all the parts to strike: the tip, the middle and the "Ishizuki",
If we were to assemble the Naginata, there would be weak points
so it's not possible.
My mother's Naginata, which is in Kansai, isn't warped at all.
My mother would be about a hundred years old if she were still alive, and I think she was already using it when she was a student.
The specialists I consulted on the subject told me that it had been dried naturally,
and that to make such a weapon today with that kind of material would cost tens of thousands of Yen (hundreds of dollars).
It's a magnificent weapon.
Besides, we wear gloves.
We are looking for quality gloves, but nobody makes them anymore.
Well yes, I was teaching at the "International Budo University" and at the "Seishin Joshi Daigaku" (university for women).
I did not have any other profession.
Most of them are volunteers,
which means they don't get any income.
There is an organization called the "Japanese Culture Successors' Association"
and if it were to establish a payment system, we could take care of the next generations' training.
However, well...
As the saying goes, "a Bushi (warrior) should eat too",
and if most of the instructors teach voluntarily for now,
that situation will probably be a problem in the future
and one should be able to make a living out of teaching Naginata.
Even with the organization of competitions,
or with manga about Naginata such as Asahi Nagu, which had a great success on TV,
we will never make any profit.
The only benefit is to make us known better.
Women, because of marriage, motherhood, children's education, and also supporting their own parents,
they don't have much time for themselves anymore.
Some of them who could compete in their youth
but who had to stop to take care of their children or parents, they wish to start again,
and they come back to us little by little to practice.
In that way, we can say that Naginata has a depth that is attractive for them.
Recently we have organized more and more Tendo Ryu trainings for beginners.
Practitioners appreciate those a lot,
and we have had very positive feedback, so I'm quite happy about it.
Those who also practice at the All Japan Naginata Federation
are very busy with competitions, refereeing, rank exams, etc.
So in a way it's beginners who are the most devoted to their practice [of Tendo Ryu].
Well actually, we would like to find sponsors, or at least people to support us.
I am in touch with the International Naginata Federation, and they say that overseas too,
to promote Naginata is costly and therefore difficult.
That's why I think it's important to find sponsors to support us,
but they are hard to find.
Several foreigners come to train in Japan before going home to teach by themselves.
The Nippon Budokan has been organizing for a while the "Kokusai Budo Bunka Seminar",
which are aimed at an international audience.
On that occasion we also teach Naginata,
and foreigners, actually, are showing admirable commitment that you cannot find with Japanese.
In that regard, actually,
I wonder why Japanese lack that spirit.
For instance, when I practice with Alex, I can feel a level of commitment and earnestness
that Japanese don't have I think.
So I think that we have to train those practitioners very conscientiously,
and it would be a terrible waste not to do so.
I urge them to do all they can to come.
I want them to know that Naginata is a very enjoyable martial art
for men as well as women.
[Jordy: Even if they don't speak Japanese?]
Yes, even if they don't speak Japanese.
Even in that case,
it wouldn't be a problem.
I really have to say... I really have to say that Tendo Ryu is a great and thorough practice.
After all, it has been invented and founded by our ancestors,
and everyday I reflect that it is something truly exceptional.

Tesla Model 3 production reportedly falls short of target - Duration: 3:24.Tesla will reportedly fall short of its 2,500-per-week
target for production of the crucial Model 3 sedan when it reports its numbers this week,
but the news isn't entirely bad.
CEO Elon Musk told employees in a company-wide email on Monday that Tesla had just passed
a rate of 2,000 per week, according to a report by Jalopnik.
That was still a big increase from earlier production numbers, and Tesla shares recovered
some of Monday's heavy losses in reaction to the report.
Some analysts had speculated that if the news wasn't outright terrible, Tesla might benefit
from lowered expectations.
It also sounded, though, like Musk was extrapolating from a daily rate and production had yet to
achieve a sustained 2,000 over seven days.
He's quoted by Jalopnik as saying in the email, "If things go as planned today, we will comfortably
exceed that number over a seven day period!"
Bloomberg has been tracking Model 3 production and places output at 1,200 per week.
It has been a tough couple of weeks for Tesla.
The company is dealing with another headline-grabbing accident, a fatal crash involving one of its
Model X crossovers.
Tesla reported that the Autopilot self-drive system was activated only moments before the
car's fiery crash into a highway barrier, and it drew the ire of the feds for revealing
details during an ongoing investigation.
Tesla also announced the recall of approximately 123,000 Model S sedans, concerning the potential
for corroded bolts in the power steering system.
> Related: Tesla Model 3 review, and the all-too-real problems of Autopilot
Last week's biggest grabber headline of all: Ratings agency Moody's downgraded Tesla and
said the company needs to raise another $2 billion to offset its high rate of cash burn.
And though Musk might not force Tesla into bankruptcy with one dumb, poorly timed tweet,
he didn't do it any favors during a particularly rough patch when he sent an April Fool's tweet
saying that Tesla Motors was going bankrupt.
Not everyone was laughing, however, when Tesla stock slumped Monday during Wall Street trading
by approximately 6 percent.
Some observers, including the Los Angeles Times, saw cause and effect there, but the
reality is Tesla's stock had been dropping since before the tweet (it fell 12 percent
last week and is down 19 percent for the year).
Investors are plenty nervous that production of the Model 3 sedan, the highly-anticipated
volume model starting at $35,000, was still moving at a glacial pace.
If the Musk memo is for real and the rate of production is below target, it sounds like
there is still work to be done.
Elon Musk's comedic timing can definitely use some work, too.

Tutorial of this easy and versatile granny square - Duration: 14:02.Welcome to "Made among the oaks"
Hi, I am going to show you how to crochet this granny square, this is the chart
and then I´ll do it myself later. We begin working 6 chains and
12 single crochet around those chains. I begin crocheting one chain but this one doesn´t count. Then, 12 s. c.
Afterwards, crochet 12 petals of 15 chains each. We go up with slip stitches.
On the next row, we work 3 chains at the beginning and then 2 d.c. We work them together.
then, 4 chains, a s.c., 4 chains, a s. c.
There are always 4 chains in between. At the corner, we work 3 d. c together
and then 4 chains in between.
On the next-to-last row, 3 d.c. together and 5 chains in between at the corners.
In the other places, only 4 chains. Here in the middle
we crochet d.c. 3 together. On the last row, we´ll crochet s.c. stitches.
7 at the corners and 5 at the other places
Now, I´ll do it myself. Then, I start crocheting 6 chains.
this is one chain, I turn over the hook, I tighten the chain, I will not count this chain.
Now I´ll crochet six: one, two, three, four, five and six and I crochet a slip stitch
On the first chain, not on the one I made the knot,
I work another chain, I will not count this one either, I crochet 12 s.c.: one, two, three, four
I hide the yarn of the beginning underneath... five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve
I finish doing a slip stitch on the first s.c. and I´ll begin doing the petals:
15 chains: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve
thirsteen, fourteen and fifteeen. Now I work a slip stitch or a s.c. on the second s.c. of the previous row.
You have to do 12 petals, it has to be 12
not 11 or 13, it must be multiple fo 4. Here, I have already worked 12 petals I go
to the first petal and work a slip stictch on the first chain.
Now, I have to go up the petal, I´ll do it
with slip stitches. Here, I am at the top of the petal, I´ll work
3 chains that are equivalent to a d.c. and two d. c. more but I will not finish them
I just do the first part of the d.c. Here I have 3 threads, I´ll take them together. This is
half of the corner, I will finish the other half at the end of the row.
Now I will crochet the sides: 4 chains, I go to the other petal, a s.c., 4 chains... 2.3
4, I go to the other petal and I work a s.c.I crochet 4 chains
I´ll do the corner on the other petal: 3 d.c. worked together:
a d.c. I don´t finish, yarn over, another d.c. I don´t finish
Now I go through the four threads together. Four chains: one, two
three and four. I´ll do the other side of the corner on the same petal,
again work 3 d.c. together.... the first one I don´t finish, another d. c. I don´t finish
another d.c. I don´t finish and then I finish them together. Well this corner is finished
You see the first corner is only half crocheted, but this corner is finished. Now
4 chains and I go to the other petal and so on... 4 chains and I go to the other petal
4 chains and I go to the other corner. You can see the corners are already finished
Now, I´ll finish the first one. I have already crocheted 4 chains
Now, d.c. 3 together
Now , instead of crocheting 4 chains, I´ll crochet only 2
This is the end of the row and I´ll crochet a half double crochet
I go through the three threads at the same time, it stays in the middle
because I´ll crochet half of the corner of the next row: 3 chains and
2 d.c. The 3 chains are equivalent to a d.c.
I finish them together and croche 4 chains: one, two, three, four and I go to the middle
I work a s. c., 4 chains and here in the midde d.c. 3 together:
One d. c. I don´t finish, another d.c. I don´t finish
another d.c. I don´t finish, I go through the four threads, 4 chains
a s.c. here in the middle. Now I will work the corner. First I crochet 4 chains
and d.c. 3 together
Here in the corner, instead of crocheting 4 chains
we´ll crochet 5 chains. In this row it is like that at the corners.
You have to crochet 5 chains: one, two, three, four, five and then
d.c. 3 together: one, two, three, 4 chains more
You only have to crochet 5 chains at the corners, the other places only 4: one, two, three, four
a s.c. here, 4 more chains
and here d.c. 3 together. I finish all the sides in the same way
The first corner was only half made. Now
I have to finish it. I have already worked a s.c. in this space, 4 more chains
and d.c. 3 together :
and here I have to crochet 5 chains
I finish with a slip stitch. I have already finished this row.
On the next row, you only crochet s.c. I work a slip stitch at the beginning and
5 s.c. At the corners, I will crochet seven s.c.
I go to the next gap, I crochet 5 s.c., I go to the next gap
I work 5 s.c., I go to the next gap, 5 s.c. more and when I get to the corner I will crochet seven
It is always the same. This is the way we finish this row, with only s.c. Well, see you soon.

See my floppy ears.
I can live in the forest
Up to fifty years
You might say I'm rather large
But trust me that ok
My legs are wide and strong
enough to carry what I weigh.
And I eat grass and roots,
Leaves off of trees
Bark and fruit
Thats what I need
Eating is important and it's so much fun.
If I keep this up I'll end up weighing several tons
I'm a giant elephant
My tusks come in handy
They help me gather all my food
They're made of Ivory
I'm the giant elephant
My trunk is very strong
You can learn a lot about me
when you sing this song

Iraq War Vet Who Lost His Leg in Battle Shuts Down David Hogg With Brutal Message - Duration: 3:19.Iraq War Vet Who Lost His Leg in Battle Shuts Down David Hogg With Brutal Message
Anti-Second Amendment activist David Hogg sure knows how to play the victim but a
wounded soldier just called him out on his perpetual lectures.
On Friday, a U.S. Army soldier named Derek Weida posted a scathing response to Hogg,
who has proclaimed himself the voice of a generation on gun violence in America.
Whether you want to call Hogg a shooting survivor is up for debate. Perhaps witness is
a better term: He was at the high school at the time of the tragedy, but only heard gunshots
in a different part of the school.
In contrast, Derek Weida is a shooting survivor in every sense of the word. He literally took
a bullet for his country and gave up his leg due to injuries from that attack.
I got shot on a house raid in Iraq, the former soldier posted on Facebook. My
getting shot didnt make me a professional on war, international relations, house raids
(obviously), or guns, he explained, seemingly criticizing Hogg for positioning himself as
a gun control authority.
Weida explained that he isnt particularly pro-gun himself, but feels that David Hogg
is using the issue for self-aggrandizement and coming across as condescending and smug
as a result.Heres my two cents: Its not a gun problem, not a people problem, its
a culture thing, the one-legged soldier wrote.
Dont ever be so quick to tell a whoooole lot of people how to live, he warned Hogg.
F***ing NOBODY wants school shootings, mass shootings, shootings of any kind where
somebody ends up injured or dead. Nobody.
Its not even about the gun. Its about the freedom and the right And you cant
win an argument against that, nor should you, he went on.
Weida, who served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq, scolded Hogg for demonizing law-abiding
gun owners and portraying NRA members as blood-soaked murderers.
Bad things happen sometimes but on the grand scale of things Like 99.999% of people
are good. Yes, lets find ways to deter those .001% of people as best we can but theyre
gonna accomplish their task regardless, he stated.
I guess I just want to say dont be so quick to talk. Dont be so quick to think
YOU are somehow the ONE person who has things figured out, the Purple Heart recipient
suggested to Hogg.
Then he wrote something that countless conservatives have wanted to say to David Hogg for weeks.
You want to make a change? Cool!! But Try to be less of a c*** about it.
Hes right on the money. Nobody nobody wants more school shootings. Not liberals,
not conservatives, not NRA members. The problem that many on the right have with Hogg isnt
that he wants to reduce violence, its that he insults and smugly attacks anyone who doesnt
carry his banner.
David Hogg has the demeanor and attitude of someone who hasnt yet learned that 17-year-olds
dont have all the answers.
If he has an ounce of wisdom, hed be smart to listen to veterans like Weida who have
faced their own deadly struggles but realized that humbleness goes a lot further than hubris.

Florida Pervert Reaches Up Woman's Skirt, Firefighter Husband Gets Brutal Revenge - Duration: 3:38.Florida Pervert Reaches Up Womans Skirt, Firefighter Husband Gets Brutal Revenge
A pervert in Florida is hating life after trying to reach up a womans skirt to grope
her.
Now, the scumbag is wishing that hed never been born after the victims firefighter
husband got brutal revenge. An enjoyable evening out for a Florida Keys firefighter and his
wife turned into a life-altering mess after a lowlife named Jose Fernando Benitez Diaz
tried to reach up the womans skirt at the Morada Bay Beach Cafe in Monroe County, Florida.
According to the Miami Herald, the shocking incident took place just before 1 a.m. on
Sunday, April 1, 2018, in the city of Islamadora.
Police said that an Islamadora Fire Rescue Department captain named Lester Robert Young
was arrested after brutally beating Diaz first with a mason jar and then with his fists after
the pervert allegedly groped Youngs wife and tried to put his hands up her skirt.
Of course, it was probably a better idea to call the cops and have Diaz arrested, but
Young was so enraged after his wife told him what had happened, he gave Diaz a brutal lesson
he wont soon forget.
According to police, Diaz, 28, was beaten so badly that he had to be flown to Jackson
Memorial Trauma Center in Miami after officers found him lying motionless on the ground.
Deputy Christopher Kilmurray reported that there was blood coming from his mouth,
cheeks, eye orbits, and forehead. I can just imagine what might go through Diazs
head the next time that he thinks about putting his hands up a womans skirt.
While I dont condone violence, there was a time in our country where Young would have
been admired for showing a lowlife what happens when you try to sexually assault a mans
wife.
Young, 33, who has worked for the Islamadora Fire Rescue Department for eight years, told
deputies that he took it too far when he learned what Diaz had done to his wife.
Young confirmed to deputies that Diaz had groped his wife and tried to reach under her
skirt.
While telling deputies what happened, Young said that his wife was assaulted by Diaz and
that she saw him in the parking lot and got upset. When the victim told her husband
what happened, he went straight after the pervert.
I lost it and attacked him, Young told the deputies.
Young later told Deputy Kilmurray, I should not have done it. According to Daily Caller,
three witnesses who spoke to deputies said that they saw Young run up to Diaz and strike
him in the face with a glass.
Diaz instantly fell to the ground before Young got on top of him and delivered a nasty dose
of ground and pound. In my opinion, there are a lot of men who would have beaten the snot
out of Diaz for groping their wives.
Diaz was obviously asking for trouble, and someone finally had enough of his perverted
behavior.
While its illegal and wrong to assault another person with a mason jar and beat them
the way that Young did, many people would look at that situation and understand why
Young took action.
When Deputy Kilmurray arrived at the cafe, there were several security guards surrounding
Young and ordering him to get on the ground.
Deputy Kilmurray reported that he immediately recognized Diaz because he had escorted him
out of the parking lot earlier for causing a disturbance.
The night ended with Young being arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery
with a deadly weapon.
He was released from county jail early Sunday morning with no bond set, according a spokesman
for the Monroe County Sheriffs Office named Adam Linhardt.
Fire Chief Terry Abel released a statement via email about Young, saying, He is on
administrative leave currently pending the outcome of the investigation. Its unfortunate
that Diaz was not permanently removed from the area when he was first warned by deputies
for his behavior.
Young and his wife were obviously not expecting to be confronted with such a bad situation
as they tried to enjoy an evening out.
Hopefully, Diaz will also be charged with sexual assault and spend an adequate amount
of time behind bars to pay for his wrongdoing as Im sure Young will have to do.

Speak like a Manager: Verbs 1 - Duration: 20:19.Hi.
I'm Rebecca from engVid.
Today I'm especially excited to welcome you to a new series that I've created called:
"How to Speak like a Manager".
In this series you will learn how to take general English and upgrade it to business
English.
Okay?
And we'll be doing that by looking at different verbs that you can use, adjectives, nouns,
and so on.
Okay?
But today in this lesson we will be focusing on eight verbs.
But you might be asking: "Only eight verbs and I can become a manager?"
Well, yes.
"Why?"
Because I'm going to show you how these eight verbs, to start with, can actually be used
in hundreds of ways, in different collocations or combinations of words, so therefore you'll
be able to use them in all kinds of situations.
Definitely in professional situations, but also in social situations or personal situations.
Okay?
So, let's start right now.
Okay.
So let's suppose what you want to say in general English or regular English is something like
this: "I need to find out what's wrong."
Okay?
Now, on this side is all the regular English or the general English.
Okay?
And on this side we're going to express the same idea, but in higher English, in more
advanced business English or more professional English.
And you're going to help me because I didn't write the word in yet.
You're going to help me because perhaps you already know some of these words, but even
if you know them you might not realize how many different ways we can actually use those
same words, and that's what I want you to be able to do.
Okay?
So suppose your idea in your mind is that: "I need to find out what's wrong."
So how can we say that in more professional English?
"I need to", the verb starts with "i": "I need to _______ the problem.
I need to identify the problem."
Okay?
So, our first word today is "identify".
Say it after me: "identify the problem".
Good.
Now, suppose the idea you're trying to convey is: "I need to fix the problem."
Okay?
"Fix" is a very ordinary word, so what better word could we use here?
"I need to _______ the issue or the issues.
I need to", you might know this word.
"I need to resolve", okay?
So, "resolve" is just like "solve", but usually we say: "Solve the problem", but we might
say: "Resolve the issue".
And "resolve" is an even higher, more advanced word.
And the higher vocabulary that you use, the more professional you will sound.
Okay?
And that's what our goal is.
Right?
Okay, next: "I need to give people confidence."
So what's a good word or verb for that?
"To give somebody confidence" is to, something starts with "m": "I need to _______ my employees.
I need to..."
Do you know this word?
I'm sure you've heard it.
"Motivate".
Okay?
Say it after me: "Motivate" or "motivate".
You can say the "t"; sometimes it's easier and clearer for people to understand you when
you say the "t".
So let's say the "t" now: "Motivate.
I need to motivate my employees" or: "I need to motivate my employees."
Okay?
Instead of saying: "I need to give people confidence", because you see that all the
verbs here are very ordinary, everyday verbs, and those are higher-level verbs.
Next: "I need to give clients my attention."
Again, we have a very weak verb here, so how can you say that: "I need to give my attention
to my clients or give clients my attention"?
The word...
The verb starts with "f": "I need to _______ on our clients."
What's the verb?
Do you know it?
"I need to focus", okay?
Say it after me: "Focus".
Be careful how you pronounce this word because otherwise it can sound improper.
All right?
"I need to focus on our clients."
Sounds a lot better than saying: "I need to give my attention to my clients."
Okay?
"I need to focus".
Next: "I need to spend as little as possible".
"Spend as little" means spend as little money.
So what's one word that captures that idea, to spend as little as possible?
It starts with "m": "I need to _______ our expenses or our costs."
Do you know what it is?
Okay?
So the word is "minimize".
Okay?
I've written it twice because this is the American way with a "z" or a "z", and this
is the British spelling with a "s"; both are correct.
So: "I need to minimize our expenses."
When you minimize something, you reduce it to as much as possible.
Okay?
"Minimize".
And, again, we're going to see so many different ways in which we can use this verb and all
of these verbs.
Okay?
Not just the way I've done it here with "resolve the issues".
We're going to see lots of other things you can resolve or lots of other things you can
minimize.
Okay.
Next: "I need to make as much money as possible."
Don't we all?
Okay.
So, what's a good verb for that?
Again, something that starts with "m": "I need to _______ our earnings".
"Earnings" means the money that you make.
So what's the verb?
It's very similar to "minimize"...
It's actually the opposite of "minimize", it is...
Yeah, I can hear some of you.
"Maximize", good.
Okay?
Again, I'm going to write it with the "z" or the "z", but you can also write it with
an "s" and it's correct.
What you need to do regarding that British and American spelling is stay consistent.
If you're using American spelling, then use American spelling; if you're using British
spelling, use British.
Okay?
Try to stay consistent.
Next: "I need to get more work."
We're not making enough money.
We need more work.
So instead of saying: "Get more work", we can say: "_______ more business".
What's that really good verb here?
It starts with "g": "generate".
Okay?
"Generate more business" means to make, create...
Create more business.
Okay?
Instead of just saying: "Get more work", which sounds very ordinary: "We need to generate
more business.
We need to create more business."
Okay?
And the last one: "I need to use the new ideas."
So, instead of saying "use", there is a verb that starts with "i" which means to put something
into practice, to use it: "I need to _______ the strategies" or "I need to _______ the
recommendations."
Do you know that word?
Okay.
"Implement".
Okay?
"To implement an idea" means to put it into practice.
So let's say you have an idea.
Okay?
That's great, we all have good ideas, but what are you going to do with that idea?
You want to use it, you want to put it into practice, you want to implement it.
But not only can you implement ideas, you can implement lots of other things which we're
going to talk about as we continue the lesson, but here we're talking about implementing
a strategy, which is a plan.
So, repeat after me now, just get used to saying these things out loud.
The more you say them, the more comfortable you will be saying them, and the more likely
you are to actually use them at work, or in a job interview, or something...
Or in your emails, your professional emails.
Okay?
Just get comfortable with them.
Are you ready?
"Identify the problem", "resolve the issues", "motivate my employees", "focus on our clients",
"minimize our expenses", "maximize our earnings", "generate more business", and "implement the
strategies".
Good.
Okay?
Now I'm going to show you how to take these eight words and use them in so many other
ways.
I'll be right back.
All right, so let's start with our first four words.
Okay?
"Identify", "resolve", "motivate", and "generate".
All right?
So let's look at how many different ways we can use these words, and these are just a
few of them.
Okay?
I've actually created for you a resource which has more than 100 words which you can use
in combination with just these eight verbs.
Okay?
So afterwards I'll tell you where you can download that from, from our website.
Okay?
But now let's look at some of the possibilities, how we can use these words.
So, the first word: "identify", so again: What does "identify" mean?
It means to find who or what.
Okay?
For example: If you want to start a new business, you need to also identify the risks of starting
a new business.
What is "the risk"?
The danger.
Okay?
The possible problems, the risks.
Or if you want to hire someone, you need to identify or find, you need to identify the
right person for the job.
Right?
Good.
That's part of a manager's role, to recruit good people.
All right.
Now, what I want to show you on this side is that you can not only use these verbs in
business and professional situations, but also in all kinds of other situations in your
life.
For example: You and your spouse might sit down and discuss the fact that we need to
identify the reasons why Johnny's not doing well in school, and how we can help him.
Okay?
"We need to identify the ways in which we can save money."
Okay?
So you see that we can use it in everyday life as well, but we're using higher-level
vocabulary.
Okay.
Now: "resolve".
Again, "resolve" is like solve.
Okay?
So: "We need to resolve the situation", "We need to resolve a crisis".
What's "a crisis"?
It's a very serious situation.
Okay?
Very bad, emergency kind of situation is a crisis.
All right?
"We need to resolve the disagreements between our children because they keep fighting."
Or: "We need to resolve the tension between these two neighbours."
Okay?
"Tension" is like stress.
Okay?
Next word: "motivate".
Right?
"We need to motivate our staff", "We need to motivate the team to do well."
All right?
"We need to motivate our kids".
"Kids" is like slang for children.
"Motivate our kids to do their homework", "I need to motivate my spouse to find another
job".
"Spouse", what does this word mean?
Husband or wife.
Okay?
And now the word "generate".
Okay?
So what is "generate"?
To create more of something.
So: "To generate more sales", of course that's usually the objective and the goal of most
companies, or to generate more revenue.
"Revenue" is just a business word for basically more money.
Okay?
All right.
Or: "You need to generate more interest in a particular subject."
Let's say your child is not interested in math or in some other subject, or geography,
and you want to generate...
You want to be able to help him to generate more interest in that subject or generate
more enthusiasm for helping you in the house.
Okay?
Things like that.
Now, as I said, we can use all kinds of subjects-okay?-for...
In our sentence.
We can say: "We need to".
You can talk about your company, we can say: "The company needs to..."
You could talk about your government, you can say: "The government needs to", whatever.
Or: "My children need to", "My neighbours need to", "My brother needs to", "My friend
needs to", "I need to".
Okay?
All right.
And not only "need to" before all these verbs; you can say: "I need to identify the risks",
"I should resolve this situation", "I must motivate the staff", or "I have to generate
more sales".
Okay?
So you see that you can use all kinds of verbs here as well.
Okay?
Now, when I come back we'll look at the other four verbs that we learned.
Now let's focus on our next four words.
Okay?
And they are: "focus", "minimize", "maximize", and "implement".
All right?
Let's look at how we can use these words.
You can focus on your priorities.
What are "priorities"?
The things that are most important, the things you should really be paying attention to are
your priorities.
Okay?
Let's say you have five things to do in a day, but the first thing is the most important
thing, that's your most important priority, so you should focus on that priority.
Okay?
Or you can focus on your goals, your objectives, your dreams, your visions, your ambitions,
and so on.
Okay?
Again, we can use these words in any sphere of life, also your academic life.
You can...
Perhaps you need to focus on your studies, you need to focus on improving your grades.
Okay?
Or improving your health.
Okay?
You can also add a word in there, like I did just now: "Focus on improving my health",
"Focus on increasing my grades", okay?
Things like that.
Next: "minimize".
Again, "minimize" means to reduce to the lowest level, so: "We need to minimize costs".
"Costs" are like expenses.
"We need to minimize the time that's wasted by many people in this department."
Okay?
"We need to minimize the noise-all right?-that's sometimes in this neighbourhood."
And: "We need to minimize the amount of money we are spending on coffee."
Okay?
Apparently I forgot to write that.
Okay, never mind.
All right.
"Maximize".
So, "maximize" means to make as high as possible.
This was to make as low as possible; "maximize" is to make as high as possible.
So: "We need to maximize our profit."
Okay?
"Profit" is the money that you earn after you have paid everything and everyone.
Okay?
"Need to maximize efficiency".
"Efficiency" is productivity, how...
How well you work in terms of time, in terms of all your resources.
"Maximize efficiency".
Okay?
As a student or as a parent, you want your children or you want yourself to...
You want to be able to maximize your grades.
You want to maximize your investments.
If you put money into a particular stock or share, you want to make sure that the investment
is maximized.
Okay?
Now, here you see that I am using a lot of other business vocabulary and generally more
advanced vocabulary, so you have a chance as you learn these eight verbs to also learn
a lot of these collocations and combinations with other nouns.
And in case you're not familiar with what those mean, then that's an opportunity to
go even further with this lesson.
Okay?
All right.
The last verb: "implement".
So, "to implement something" means to actually put it into practice, not just talk about
it, but to actually do it.
So: "We need to implement the changes", "We need to implement the new policies that the
department or that the company has come up with", "We need to implement the safety rules",
or "We need to implement the consultant's suggestions or recommendations", or anything
like that.
Okay?
Now, again, on that resource which I've created, you will see hundreds of examples of how you
can use just these eight words.
And in future lessons you'll see more verbs and more examples, so this is a really quick
shortcut.
Okay?
This is a vocabulary hack, actually, for you.
And a hack is a shortcut, a way for you to expand your vocabulary more quickly and more
easily.
All right?
So, what I suggest that you do now is a few things.
So, first go to our website at www.engvid.com, and there you can do a quiz on these eight
words-okay?-to make sure that you really know the meaning, understand how to use them and
so on.
Okay?
Next, you can...
While you're at the website you can also download for free the resource that I've created on
how to use these eight words with many other word combinations.
All right?
Then if you really want to start implementing the recommendations that I've made to you,
then write a sentence, write one sentence, write two, write three - choose one word and
write a sentence in the comments section of our engVid website, or on our Facebook, or
somewhere-okay?-or on YouTube.
So, write a comment using one, or two, or three of these words.
Okay?
Try to really make those words your own.
And you could write...
You could say, like: "I need to maximize my income."
Okay?
Or: "Our department should minimize costs."
Or: "The president must..."
I don't know, you decide what the president must do.
Okay?
So, there's so many different kinds of examples you could write.
Write about something that's relevant to you, and that will help you to remember these words
and understand these words properly.
Okay?
And last of all, subscribe to my YouTube channel because that way you can continue to get the
other lessons in this series, and lots of other lessons which I've created which are
really, like, shortcuts and hacks for you to learn English more effectively and efficiently.
Okay?
Thanks really...
Thanks very much for watching, and all the best with your English.
Bye for now.
