welcome back to another video my name is Steph from StephJKing.com coming to
you from beautiful Brisbane Australia and today we're going to talk about what
you need to know before starting a YouTube channel
I started my channel about three to four months ago this current channel I've
actually had another channel before but that was a couple years ago and the
topics on what I used to speak about back then just aren't really an interest
or an area of interest for me anymore hence this new YouTube channel I wanted
to start afresh so whilst I was doing that channel and also when I was
starting to think about doing this new one and even just in the past three to
four months the things that I kind of learnt and just things that I want to
share with you just so that if you are thinking about starting your own channel
or you already have and you're sort of just researching and just binge watching
YouTube which you do tend to do I just wanted to share with you I guess my
personal thoughts around what I wish on you or what I did know which I think is
really important for other people to know first things first let's talk about
growth you are not going to have overnight success you are not even gonna
have over a month or potentially over a year success and that's something that
you really need to come to terms with very early on from the very beginning
before you even think about starting a YouTube channel well you'd need to think
about starting your YouTube channel to think about these things anyway there
are some channels that I see that they do have success quickly in the sense of
they can get up to a hundred thousand subscribers within a year and that is
quite quick paced there are also other channels that I've seen where they are
sitting around the fifty to sixty thousand subscribers and look that's a
lot of people when you think about it I know we don't tend to think that that's
a large number of people because this day and age you see channels with like
40 million subscribers which is absolutely blows my mind
even just channels with 1 million subscribers I'm just thinking that's a
huge deal and it is a huge deal but we also need to remember that for the fact
that a hundred thousand people that's still a lot of people to be watching
content that you're creating and putting out there but let's just go back
to my point I went off on a tangent there there's some channels that have
been creatively doing videos for years and they're still sitting on the 50 60
thousand subscribers sort of range and that's not a bad thing either it's just
knowing that when you do start a channel you're not going to have that success
straight up you might think that creating the videos and doing that and
finding subscribers is super super simple but there's actually a lot that
really goes into it so just have that understanding before you start creating
videos recording videos and putting them up on YouTube is that if you are
striving towards that success where you do want hundreds of thousands of
subscribers or millions of subscribers it's going to take a long time some of
the bigger channels that I have seen where they do have in the millions of
subscribers have been on YouTube for a long long time so 810 years so when you
think about it even if they're doing one video a week I'm not good at math so I'm
not gonna calculate that that's a long time
to be recording videos and you'll find that they may have been recording for a
long period of time before they actually saw a level of success that they
believed was their level of what their expectations were it is a lot more time
consuming than what you realize when you're watching youtube videos you just
think this is cool this is entertaining you don't actually think about what
happens behind the scenes to get it all ready for it to go to be uploaded on
YouTube it's takes so much time just to do this it's crazy so just prepare
yourself for example I've been on YouTube for three to four months like I
said I have 35 subscribers and I've put out about 40 think 43 videos at the
moment so it's a long time it's I guess it's a lot of effort to put in to one
video so for example I spend a few hours each week researching what I want to do
I then have to do like my keyword research
I then have to sit down and actually think about well now that I have the
topic of conversation what do I actually want to talk about in that particular
video and about that topic that takes a good like half an hour
potentially for each video then it's sitting down and recording the videos so
most of the time I record my videos in batches so I do about two to three
videos in one sitting and that will normally take me an hour and that really
just depends on how prepared I am with my notes as well if I have a clear
vision or clear goal on what it is that I want to get across in that video and
the types of things that I want to talk about then it can go a lot quicker if I
don't then I tend to ramble a lot and it actually takes me a lot longer to then
edit because I am all over the place then we've recorded the videos we're
going into editing for me at the moment with you know three to four months
experience under my belt it takes me about an hour to edit my video and get
it ready to go so that's a lot of effort to be putting into recording videos each
week and that's just three videos a week so you can just imagine the people that
are doing daily vlogs that's just next-level I can only
imagine the time and the effort that they have to put into doing that
obviously you're gonna get you know faster and faster the more experience
that you have and you're gonna get better at it because you'll become more
efficient and you'll feel a lot more comfortable speaking to the camera so
you won't make so many mistakes and the editing will get quicker because you'll
start to get in sync with your style and you'll know what it is that you need to
do so you will get faster and then eventually when you do start making
money from it if that is your goal then you can obviously outsource or delegate
the stuff that you don't necessarily enjoy doing or the stuff that's really
time-consuming to you so a lot of the big youtubers will have editors but
that's way off in the distance let's talk about self confidence so obviously
speaking in front of a camera you do need to have a level of confidence to be
able to do that it is a real line it is a little bit daunting looking into a can
Rowlands and speaking as if I'm speaking to someone and that's probably a tip
there is that when you are talking you want to act as if it's a friend sitting
in front of you you don't want to be looking at your camera and then be going
oh I'm not really talking to anyone so this is super awkward you kind of want
to sit down you know think about well if my bestie was sitting in front of me how
would I be talking and that's something that will take time it's still I'm still
trying to get used to doing that sometimes I will record a video and
think oh I totally did not get that right or I totally missed what I was
trying to get to so just being natural is the best tip that I can give you but
you are going to question what you do how you talk you're going to not like
what you see at first or how you hear your voice even if you're starting
completely fresh and you've never really heard yourself before then how we hear
ourselves internally is very different to how other people hear us so when we
go to look back and watch our videos when we hear our voice we're like oh my
gosh if that's what I sound like because it's completely different so it's gonna
take a little time for you to get used to that and also you don't see the way
that you move the way that you know that facials that you make there are some
videos where I make these weird facials and I'm just like do I do that how
embarrassing but it's just you it makes you who you
are and the thing is all these other people will be seeing this within you
like the people that are close to you it's just that you haven't so when you
see these things and you hear yourself talking you're going to question
yourself and you're gonna probably lack a little bit of self confidence and what
you'll probably do and this is what I've done recently is you become obsessed so
you will start watching YouTube you will watch all these different people and
you're starts to take note of how they do things and you'll be like why can't I
do or when you're editing and you're trying
to get like a similar effect and you just don't know how to get it it will
frustrate you and you'll start to question your style as well and that's
what I did recently and it drove me insane I had this really good routine
happening and then all of a sudden I was watching way too many YouTube videos and
I was comparing myself to them and I was thinking well I'm not that good or I
really want to do it how they're doing it because they've got all these
subscribers and all these views and its really really entertaining and then you
start to question what you're doing how you're doing it and then eventually you
just become stuck and that's what I've experienced in the past week I haven't
uploaded one video which I do feel bad about but I also wound myself up so much
that I really doubted everything that I was doing and that's something that
you're gonna have to deal with is that you want to know what's good and what's
trending out there and you want to see the type of videos that other people are
doing but there is a very fine line that can easily be crossed where you're doing
research and then going into comparison mode where you're just looking at them
and then going I'm totally not up to scratch with the level of videos that
they're putting out there try not to get to that phase learn from me don't do it
because it just marks up with your mind and it just stops you from doing who you
are and doing what it is that you set out to do at the very beginning another
thing I've learned is you need to have purpose and what I mean by that is
YouTube is a search tool so it's actually pretty sure it's the second
biggest search tool apart from Google so Google's number one
YouTube is number two so when you think about what do people come to YouTube for
mostly it's sort of entertainment but a lot of the time is they're searching for
things in particular and you want to make sure that your videos are going to
be something that is found when they search a certain
so for example at the moment a little while ago I got keratin treatment on my
hair so it's always really straight and at the moment I'm always having to
straightener and I used to actually have really curly hair so I've been
binge-watching which I shouldn't be but I've been been binge watching videos
around how to get my you know restore my curly hair because I want my curly hair
back and when you search for that you want to be able to have your videos come
up as a result of that particular search so if you're just doing vlogs so if you
want to become a vlogger and you're not optimizing your video with a keyword so
if you're not doing your research and your title doesn't have is it specific
to a keyword or anything like that then you will find that it will take you a
lot longer to grow your channel then someone else that actually has a purpose
to their video for example if someone knows that a lot of people are searching
how to make money online or how to lose weight without exercising if you know
that that's a term that's well utilized and you can find different other sort of
keywords that support a very similar question I guess or very similar results
then you would want to base your videos around that so it's just having a
purpose so knowing that you're recording this video for a reason and that it's
going to be able to be a searchable function I will probably do a whole
other video around like keywords and how to optimize your channel and how to
optimize your videos and look this is completely up to you you might just want
to be a vlogger and you just might want to do that because you want to be able
to come back in a few years time and just see how your life has changed and
how you've grown over the years and just have those
memories which i think is a beautiful thing and that's one of the reasons why
I did start a YouTube channel is that I do eventually want to get to the point
where I do a little bit more blog style videos but at the moment for you to grow
your channel if that is the reason why started it is that you do want
subscribers and you do want to grow your channel and you do have a reason and a
goal and a purpose is that you need to have your videos all with a purpose so
that when someone searches that that your video is going to be there for them
to see because the more views you get the more YouTube is going to use your
videos and push them out there for people to see so they'll come up as like
the next recommendation you know how when you're watching a YouTube and down
the right-hand side you've got like all the next suggestion videos YouTube will
start pushing your videos out the more views that you get it'll start to like
give them a bit of up oh this person is actually getting some traction this
person's getting a lot of views so this is obviously good content and they're
going to want to push that out even more so I think I'm blabbed on a little bit
there but the overall message is that if you do want to grow your channel for a
reason and that you have goals to do that then you want to make sure that
your channel and your videos all have a purpose to it and you're not just
uploading videos willy-nilly I've noticed that when I put time and effort
into like researching it and making sure that it's all optimized with my keyword
then I get more views on those videos when I'm just like whipping the camera
out and just having a conversation and I didn't really think about what it is
that I wanted to talk about and I didn't do my research I get very very little to
no views on those videos so you just need to figure out what is your goal for
your YouTube channel if it is growth then just remember just even if it's
when you're starting out just make sure that each video has a purpose and a
reasoning for it and then when you do start growing and you have that
community of people with you supporting you and watching your videos then you
might want to start going a little bit more freestyle and not necessarily need
to have all these keywords and optimizing your channel and optimizing
your videos but for this beginning stages you want to make sure that you're
doing that so you can grow I know of what I was talking in here was
probably a little bit scary because I talked about you know you're not gonna
have a lot of growth up a start and you need to do a lot of work and it's a lot
of time and a lot of effort but when it comes down to it's also a lot of fun and
you are going to feel you're gonna be on a rollercoaster ride some days you're
just gonna be like I don't know if I want to do this maybe I should quit
which I've had those thoughts and then other days you're like this is the best
thing ever I'm feeling so amazing and so creative and it's just a really good
feeling so if you know that you're gonna have a mixed bag of emotions just you
need to do it regardless because if this is something that you do want to do it
is gonna be a lot of effort but it's also really really rewarding when you
sit down and you figure out a new way to edit a video that just like blows your
mind or you come up with new styles of how you're recording your video you
start playing around with it you get out more you start recording b-roll and you
just yeah it's a really really fun journey to be on and you just need to
stick it out cuz like I said there's gonna be some tough times but there's
also gonna be amazing times so do it go and have fun do some videos figure out
what your reasoning is behind it make sure you've got realistic expectations
so that you just don't give up within a week or a couple of months because you
will feel like you are going to want to but keep going it's going to be worth it
in the end it's all about consistent action if you liked this video and you
want me to do a little bit more around like YouTube whether it's my own
personal journey and my growth and even what I think will help you grow a
YouTube channel then give me a yes in the comments below and I will make sure
