Galápagos: Plants & Animals | JEOPARDY! - Duration: 2:45.

- [Alex Trebek] The Galapagos: Plants and Animals.

- Galapagos: Plants and Animals, for 200.

- [Alex Trebek] Alright.

- A 2013 study on diving mammals,

like these Galapagos sea lions.

Found that they contain a positively charged myoglobin.

It's a protein that allows them to store this gas.

Which permits them to stay under water longer.

As they hunt for their fish prey.

- [Alex Trebek] William.

- What is oxygen?

- [Alex Trebek] Right.

- Four.

- With eyes that are adapted for it's hunting time

when small fish rise to the surface to feed on plankton.

The swallow tailed gull is the only gull

that can be described by this nine letter adjective.

- [Alex Trebek] Rob.

- What is nocturnal?

- [Alex Trebek] That's the word.

- 600, please.

- Over 60,000 acres of the Galapagos islands have been

set aside for beneficial crops like

this grass of the genus Saccharum.

This primitive, but very effective press,

is helping to extract the juices.

Go Jimmy, go Jimmy...

(audience laughs)

- [Alex Trebek] Nancy.

- What is sugarcane?

- [Alex Trebek] Yup.

- Galapagos: Plants and Animals for 800.

(electronic sound)

- [Alex Trebek] Answer there the Daily Double.

(audience applause)

And you're in the lead.

- 1,200.

- [Alex Trebek] 12 for an even 6,000.

Here am I, with the clue.

- "Darwin's finches writ large", is how Carl Safina

describes this soaring bird.

The wave type here in the Galapagos is

the only truly tropical type and it has evolved

distinct markings that help provide its name.

- What's a gull?

- [Alex Trebek] No, what is the albatross?

You're close.

Alright, let's take a look at the last clue, shall we?

- Portulaca, which is this type of plant,

named for it's water storing tissues.

Will turn a bright yellow in the rainy season.

The land iguanas that feast on this plant

will eagerly approach visitors.

If they happen to be wearing yellow.

- [Alex Trebek] Rob.

- What is moss?

- [Alex Trebek] No, William or Nancy?

(signal beeps)

- Those are succulents. Succulents. Alright.

- Galapagos sea lions are thigmotactic.

Which means they thrive on bodily contact.

So if they become solitary, they tend to deteriorate.

The ideal social group then, is this one.

With an exotic name, it could be as many

as 30 females headed by one single bull.

President Moon joins other world leaders to call for action against drug abuse - Duration: 0:38.

Looking further at the UN General Assembly this week, world leaders have been voicing

their concerns about the scourge of drug abuse around the globe.

That includes President Moon Jae-in, who took part at an event on Monday titled Global Call

to Action on the World Drug Problem,… which was hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Thirty-one world leaders, including President Moon, reiterated their commitment to effectively

handle the drug problem gripping many parts of the world.

South Korea's presidential office says the meeting was part of global efforts to step

up the application of international drug control conventions.

S. Korea, U.S. settle contentious issues regarding bilateral FTA deal - Duration: 2:08.

Following up on Semin's report, we now take a closer look at how South Korea and the United

States have revised their free trade deal.

Kim Ji-yeon has this report.

South Korea's Minister of Trade Kim Hyun-chong said he had settled a number of contentious

issues with his U.S. counterpart Robert Lighthizer as the two countries revised their bilateral

free trade agreement, including those concerning the Investor State Dispute Settlement provisions

or ISDS, anti-dumping measures and textile origin standards.

Kim said the two countries included details of preventing entities from filing petitions

in multiple jurisdictions under the ISDS provisions.

They agreed the burden of proof lies with the investor... if it's the plaintiff in ISDS

systems... and lawsuits that are filed without substantial evidence are to be promptly dismissed.

Under the revised deal, they agreed to notify in advance if a country decides to impose

tariffs... and to reveal how the rates were calculated and determined.

The two countries also agreed to enforce strict rules when it comes to determining the place

of origin of textile goods... called the "Yarn Forward Rule"... which stipulates clothing

must originate from the country of its making, its thread and yarn that forms the apparel...

in order to be recognized as being made in Korea or in the U.S.

On provisions related to the auto industry, Kim said the two countries agreed the U.S.

will continue to impose 25-percent tariffs on imported light trucks and pickup trucks

until 2041... and they will not be scrapped in 2021 as initially scheduled.

Considering the imposition of safety regulations...

South Korea is to double the number of U.S. car imports -- up to 50-thousand vehicles

-- that it'll acknowledge as passing safety regulations equivalent to that of Korea's.

Regarding car emission standards, they agreed to recognize the global 'eco-innovation credit'...

which refers to any technology new to the auto market that contributes to significant

CO2 savings.

Multicultural families experience Korean Chuseok food tradition - Duration: 2:02.

Moving on to some other news now... this week in South Korea, families and relatives have

been getting together to celebrate Korea's biggest holiday, Chuseok.

Families from other ethnic backgrounds have also gathered and joined in to learn and experience

Korean Chuseok food culture as well.

Yoon Jung-min brings us some of their stories.

Korea's biggest national holiday Chuseok is the time when families gather around to celebrate

the harvest season with special food and traditions.

Foreign nationals who settled down in Korea also share food with their families during

the holiday.

The Red Cross and a multi-cultural family support center in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do Province

provided a program for multi-cultural families to help them better understand Chuseok food

tradition and make the signature rice cake songpyeon.

Some 40 participants from Russia, Japan, Vietnam and many other countries gathered to learn

how to make songpyeon.

In Korea, songpyeon rice cakes serve to bring families closer together.

"Koreans share these songpyeon, half-moon shaped rice cakes, with their families and

neighbors under the full moon at Chuseok."

The participants make pieces of songpyeon stuffed with sesame seeds, bean powder and

other ingredients.

Their songpyeons differ in size, color and shape but their expectation for the holiday

does not differ greatly.

"This is really nice.

You know, this is my first time making it, but it's really interesting.

The dough is a little bit sticky, but the feeling is really great and I hope it's really

yummy."

"Making songpyeon is more difficult than I thought.

It's sticky and it's not easy to shape it into a half-moon."

With an increasing number of multi-cultural families in Korea, the organizations say they

will keep supporting those families to help them adapt to the Korean culture ranging from

food, tradition and many other sectors.
