A lengthy French fairy tale was written in 1740 and later adapted
into a short story form in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.
And that story is known popularly today by the title, "Beauty and the Beast."
Many of you probably got acquainted with it, like I did in the early '90s,
with the Disney animated picture.
The story of "Beauty and the Beast" is actually a fascinating story of a young man
who struggles with arrogance
and he's put under a spell that exposes his inner ugliness.
And so, he is beautiful on the outside but his, his internal nature actually gets exposed on the outside.
He gets turned into a beast.
And there's this finite period of time, a period of grace, engaged by a wilting rose,
by which he has the chance to find true love.
And if he doesn't by the time that rose dies,
he stays perpetually in this beastly state.
And he looked at himself in the mirror and he recognizes, for the first time,
just exactly how ugly and hideous he actually was.
And he thinks he's completely hopeless.
But one day, a beautiful young woman shows up on his doorstep.
Her name is Belle.
Belle is sort of the embodiment of everything that is pure and lovely and virtuous.
She's the embodiment of beauty.
And the beast looks at her and thinks he doesn't stand a chance.
But she's got this undeniable beauty that he's attracted to.
And despite all his self-loathing,
despite the destructive efforts of a stranger named Gaston,
nothing can stop Belle's grace, Belle's love, from getting to the beast.
And when she finally gets to him and kisses him,
it actually transforms him back into the man that he was always supposed to be.
Beauty and the Beast is actually the story of Jesus and us.
Jesus came down to this planet and he was perfectly flawless.
But he came and showed up on our doorstep in order to rescue us out
of the darkened castle of this world.
He fought off the, the temptations of an attractive distractor.
And he was unwavering in his faithful, in his faithfulness to us
He loved us when we were our most very ugly and unlovable.
Paul puts it like this in his letter to the Romans.
In Romans 5:8 he says,
And, because he did, we've been touched by his grace
and therefore our sins are forgiven.
We're redeemed eternally.
But to the degree that we recognize that,
every day we are becoming more and more the creatures that we have been destined to be.
Do you have any favorite movies that have very clear gospel themes that run through them,
sort of like Beauty and the Beast?
If so, we'd love to hear about it.
