Sleeping Beauty was written in 1697 by a guy named Charles Perrault.
It was later popularized by the Brothers Grimm and, again,
the version that most of us are familiar with is
the mid-20th century, kind of iconic Disney animated classic.
In fact, Sleeping Beauty might be the most iconic, most essential,
of all Disney classics.
It's a fascinating story of a young woman named Aurora.
We actually meet her in the story just as an infant.
Right at her christening she gets cursed by an evil, wicked witch named Maleficent.
And she puts a spell on her and, sort of like Beauty and the Beast that we looked at yesterday,
she has a finite period of time in which she can receive true love's kiss.
By the age of 16 she has to experience that kiss.
Otherwise, she will be pricked by the needle of a spinning wheel
and put under this, this awful spell for all eternity.
So, Sleeping Beauty's fairy godmothers actually take her off into the woods
to a carpenter's house and she lives there as a peasant.
They rename her Briar Rose.
They try to keep her away from everybody else
but try to somehow find true love for her.
And throughout the entire process for these years,
Maleficent has all these demonic helpers that she's trying to ruin Aurora's life.
Despite all of that, nothing can stop true love from getting to Aurora.
A handsome prince named Prince Charming rides into her life.
He actually thrusts a sword right through Maleficent's heart.
And at the moment he does that,
all these thistles and thorns in the forest start to disappear.
And he approaches Aurora, who has fallen into the deep sleep at that point, and he kisses her.
And the moment he does that, she awakens.
It's like she's reborn and she's made alive.
The Apostle Paul talks about the same kind of story in Ephesians 2. He writes,
The story of Sleeping Beauty ends with Aurora and Prince Charming
going into this wedding banquet
that is a beautiful dance. They go and live happily ever after.
And, as beautiful as that kiss was, the most romantic gesture in all of history
was not so much a kiss that we received,
but a kiss that was received for us.
Jesus, on the night before he was crucified,
he was kissed by the disciple that betrayed him, Judas Iscariot.
In other words, he received the kiss of death so that you and I could get his kiss of life.
In that kiss, we've been reawakened.
We've been made alive.
And because of that kiss we get to go to the eternal wedding banquet
and live with him happily ever after.
