My name is Fuchsia and I'm an illustrator based in Dublin.

So, I'm standing in front of the Google data center

and we're going to paint several murals

on the walls here.

It's going to be like really impactful when you come in

and kind of overwhelming as well.

A lot of the work I do is based on things in Dublin,

and Irish things, and with an Irish sense of humor.

My style is kind of tongue in cheek and playful

big, bold shapes of color.

So here, at our Dublin data center,

we cool the data center using nice, fresh, clean Irish air.

We don't use mechanical cooling.

We don't use any chillers, or refrigeration,

or even cooling towers.

It's really unique to our climate.

We have cool conditions year round.

It's the equivalent, if you like, of

if you're driving your car,

rather than turning on the air conditioning,

you open the windows.

It was interesting

how they do, like, really efficiently use

the wind and the climate of Ireland.

That's the thing I wanted to capture

on the outside, on the walls.

Each one is its own narrative

but I think it does quite a good job of representing

the different bits of Dublin City.

All very much Dublin scenes

that are being, kind of, brought to life by the wind.

A good cross section of, like, a day in Dublin.

I want it to be something that's a bit relatable

to people in Ireland in general.

They're what brings the character to it

with a splash of fun and

something that's just silly for the sake of it.

and received it from my email, you

should print, sign, and copy the I-20 to

include in your STEM OPT application to USCIS.

was issues and before your 12 month OPT expires.

My name's Gary Kelley.

I'm an Iowa native and I've been a

visual artist, a painter, a printmaker, illustrator for

decades now.

I've been commissioned to create an image for the wall behind me.

I'm responsible for that.

So Gary is, um...

I don't know if I want to call him a technophobe but, you know,

technology is not something he uses on a daily basis.

I'm a pretty handmade kind of artist so

this is like total science fiction for me.

I love the narrative of making pictures.

I like to do people and I like to tell stories.

With this project, I saw an opportunity

to do both of those things.

Council Bluffs became a critical point

of westward expansion following Lewis & Clark.

Within 70 years, America was joined east to west,

through Council Bluffs,

by a rail system and the telegraph

and made Council Bluffs an enduring anchor

of the sharing of information.

This was the data center of 120 years ago.

It was a very intriguing connection to the data

that today passes through Council Bluffs.

I wanted there to be a continuum, a narrative,

that tracks the history of people

disseminating, collecting, sharing data.

Starting with Lewis & Clark and their council

with the native people, the Otoe Tribe.

They were sharing information

and then moving to similar people

working in the data center today.

And in between, we have these elements that will

remind the residents of the region

of their importance in all of this, of them.

It's great to see that happen here,

and to see that continued tradition of

sharing information across the world,

and really enabling people to do things that

they didn't think were possible before.

It's about the people and history and

making it all reflect what happens on that site.

In the 15th century, aristocratic British hunters invented some whimsical labels for

groups of animals, like a "gaggle of geese", a "skulk of foxes", and a "charm of

finches".

These "collective nouns" allowed the hunters to share their appreciation for nature's animals...before

shooting them.

And unlike those unlucky critters, this fanciful way of describing groups of animals has survived

the centuries, giving rise to "pods of whales", "mobs of kangaroos", and "clowders of

cats".

Even though these terms rarely make it into the formal scientific literature – where

it's often clearer to just refer to groups of animals as, well, "groups" – lots

of people, including scientists, use collective nouns elsewhere.

That's because replacing a generic label with a specialized mini-metaphor allows us

to communicate something interesting about the animals.

Terms like a "leap of leopards" and a "romp of otters" give us a sense of their

behavior.

Terms like a "murmuration of starlings" and a "crash of rhinos" let us hear them

nearby.

And terms like a "murder of crows" and an "exaltation of larks" make us feel

a particular way due to their presence.

And, just like the 15th century hunters, we also collectively noun the creatures modern

to our day, like a "mischief of pikachus" or "a cog of robots."

Ok, kind of ridiculous.

But at its heart, this is just people showing their passion and appreciation for nature

and language and fun.

Taken all together, the "ballet of nutcrackers", "parliament of owls", "flutterby of

butterflies", "knot of toads", "labor of moles", "wisdom of wombats" and so

on, are a whimsy of collective nouns.
