Our top story this afternoon,....
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is now in South Korea after arriving at Osan Air
Base.
He has paid a visit to the DMZ,... the heavily-fortified buffer zone between the two Koreas.
When Tillerson sits down with South Korea's Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se later in the
day,... it's hoped he might share what's being dubbed the Trump administration's "new approach"
on North Korea.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Connie Kim starts us off.
The first visit to South Korea by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is a highly anticipated
one... as it comes amid threats of further North Korean provocations... and China's economic
retaliation against the ongoing deployment of the THAAD missile defense system to South
Korea.
These two issues are expected to top the agenda during Tillerson's talks with Prime Minister
and Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn and Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.
It'll be the second face-to-face between Tillerson and Minister Yun after their brief sit-down
last month on the sidelines of a G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting in Germany.
As they did last month,... the two are expected to reaffirm the two countries' commitment
to North Korea's denuclearization and the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
Before the diplomats sit down for talks, Tillerson and Minister Yun will hold a joint press conference.
Attention is expected to focus on the specifics of the Trump administration's "new approach"
on North Korea that Tillerson briefly raised at a press conference in Tokyo on Thursday.
They will also likely field questions on how Washington will cooperate with the new administration
in South Korea that's likely to prefer a softer approach on North Korea... and on how much
pressure Washington plans to impose on China for its retaliatory actions against the THAAD
deployment.
Wrapping up his visit to Seoul on Saturday morning,… Tillerson will fly to Beijing,...
carrying the results of his talks with South Korea and Japan.
President Trump's top diplomat will have plenty to chew over with Chinese President Xi Jinping
and Foreign Minister Wang Yi,... ranging from the THAAD issue... to ways to bring about
change from North Korea.
China's Foreign Ministry has said it will call on South Korea and the United States
to halt their annual joint military drills... in exchange for nuclear concessions from North
Korea.
