Hello, everyone! This is "El Rock Show"
My name is Joe Blackwater and I'm here with
Elric Epicness
Today we're going to have a small debate about what's going on with metal.
The truth is... We're really concerned about it
Because we love it and we've analyzed some stuff
And there's something weird... something ugly going on
Yeah, something weird is happening in metal
This is what we want to talk about a bit today
But most of all we want YOU to make your own conclusions about what is really happening
That's right... First of all, we're going to start with what we think is being given the most relevance right now
Is it the music? Or is it a band's look and appearance?
What do you think?
I think metal has reached a point where looks are more important than music
I know that's something that isn't really new
I mean, since the beggining "looks" have been really important
For example, Alice Cooper who was the first one to really use a certain kind of image
But I think it was during the 80's that image reached its most important point.
Everyone wanted to the most handsome guy, or the toughest or whatever.
But it always was accompanied by the music itself
Yeah, image was an accesory to music
For example, Judas Priest
They created this image... The metal image.
Something really suited for rock music with all the leather and stuff
Now we know it was totally ripped off from the gay community
Yeah, but in the end what matters was the music, the message. That's what we liked about it.
The image was there in order to be appealing to people and nowadays it's the most iconic thing
Something we have been talking about the past few days
We have been checking out metal videos, looking at new bands
We have been looking at the Youtube channels of big record labels
And we've come to realize that basically everything that is new is just a copy of the copy
I mean, it looks like nowadays in order to be a succesful band you have to be a clone of an older band
Like... What's the name of this band we were listening to?
"The Charm The Fury"
Yeah, they play their music well
I didn't actually know about them and that's also what I want to talk about.... How do you get to know new bands?
In my case I actually was looking around on the internet and this video came up
And I was like "Ok, Let's listen to this."
It kind of sounded like Arch Enemy
The beggining was very Arch Enemy-like, but then it progresses to become something pre-made
Things that have been done before by other bands, that record labels know will work.
And then they mish-mash it together into ONE single band
Yeah, that's kind of the key point here.
Because speaking about this very band, when watching the video, which is the latest
The whole video looks like a remake of an Arch Enemy video
With all the political symbology, nuclear weapons, dictators...
And the singer herself looks like kind of a mixture between Angela Gossow in her prime
With the white tank top, the tough look and all, but...
At the same time she looks like a copy of Alissa White
With the blue hair on a really attractive girl.
And the truth is... The music doesn't actually suck
In fact, it was REALLY well made.
The first 30 seconds of the song are totally Arch Enemy, until it goes on and becomes a Pop song.
And that's what kind of disturbed us
Yeah, I was vomiting because of the sudden change in pace...
I actually was expecting something like that because there are similar bands like Amaranthe
Yeah, Amaranthe. I actually like them.
Those bands are kind of a derivative from Metalcore, screamo and other bands with harsh vocals
But then you get to the chorus and you hear a clean voice...
And you realize they're trying to sell you a pop chorus disguised as a metal song.
It's actually really well done that you can't help but like it.
Yeah, exactly. That's what leads us to the next point in our discussion...
Something we have realized in the past few months... years...
Is that "djent" became the dominant metal genre.
If you look closely, the past few years pretty much every "extreme" band was a Meshuggah clone.
They had 7 and 8 string riffs
And everyone wanted to sound like Animals as Leaders or Meshuggah. But this was really funny...
Because Meshuggah are these nordic dudes in their 40's who have been doing the same thing for decades
And then it became cool to have skinny guys with the latest trendy haircut
Yeah, like a stylized Meshuggah.
If you need to take Meshuggah's music and then have beautiful looking people play it
So people will buy it, then you are not buying the music, you're buying some cool looking dudes
Who are doing something "new"
But how many Meshuggah clones can you have have before it's not cool anymore?
If you've been paying attention during this year, "djent" is losing a lot of popularity because it has been done to death
What more can "djent" offer after all of this?
It's not about dissing these bands or the value of their work, they actually CAN play
They're really good musicians with studies and all...
But it all sounds "pre-made", it sounds like something that already exists
And it seems like they do it because everyone else is doing it, but we never get to see the "why" are they doing it.
Yeah, that's pretty much the sad conclusion we have reached.
The problem with metal is that nowadays everyone wants to be "unique" and "special"
It's something that has been going around for ages
But we have realized that there now exists a metal subgenre for absolutely everyone
Are you a vegan? There's a band for you.
Are you for animal rights? There's a band for you.
Are you into Norse mythology? Then there's like a thousand bands for you.
Are you into roman mythology and everything related to Rome? There's EX DEO for you
Are you into occultism? There's Therion.
I'm wearing a "Nile" t-shirt today, so if you like Egypt... There's Nile for you!
The fact here is that we don't listen to bands because they're good anymore.
But we listen to bands that are specifically designed to be good so we like them.
Like the band we were discussing earlier... The music was excellent, the band's look was excellent
Everything about them was excellent, but it's so well made that we don't even know what lies underneath.
I actually don't know a thing about them, and it's really well done but at the same time there's nothing remarkable about it.
Exactly, there's nothing remarkable about it. And that makes me feel bad...
...because I don't like them due to the fact that it's so well designed and packaged...
So we've got no choice than liking this band.
But that doesn't happen because there is now much more music being made that we can consume.
Yes, there are too many bands now and we can't listen to them all.
And that leads us to our next point...
We are not complaining about the things old school fans criticized
Such as "playing fast" vs "playing with feeling" or how "processed" the instruments are.
We are completely in favor of doing things right and in a professional manner.
But sometimes bands seem so worried about "looking professional" that their message becomes pretty much non-existent.
And I don't think that's a good thing.
Yeah, because then it all becomes about selling stuff.
Just like we were talking about Apple when they created the iPod
And then someone else comes around and tries to sell you their mp3 player
But you don't understand why they are selling this to you, and they're just doing it because someone else was making money with it.
Yeah, I find that to be terrible for the community
Which leads us to our next point...
What's lacking or what will happen to metal in the next few years?
From my perspective, this looks to me like the 80's
Where a metal style HAD to be designed
Which was "Glam metal" in order to reach more people, sell it, and make it an appealing product
And it was all a product of the industry in order to make metal bigger and more profitable.
And it had a massive impact and metal was really popular because of this never-before seen thing.
I feel like something similar is going to happen now.
That's why there are many of these bands, and I don't know if they are into making this pop or techno metal.
Or if that's their way of saying something new.
But something like that is going to happen.
Of course new stuff is always weird and you don't necessarily like it, but let's hope it doesn't happen.
Well, in my case... Before eveybody hates me for saying something really controversial.
I know there are independent bands out there that are working on new stuff and experimenting all the time.
And that we can all listen to them. That's not what I'm arguing about...
We are talking about mainstream metal here, which is produced by big record labels.
What I think must happen is that the industry needs to crash again.
I know it's a band thing because that will mean a lot of people will lose their jobs
And it's not some kind of personal vendetta against the industry
It's just that we have reached a point where we are so comfortable with the new music being made.
I mean, when you've got like ten thousand bands or more to choose from, but I'm only going to listen to my twenty favorite "vegan metal" bands...
Then it means we have a problem.
I believe there no longer exists a sense of community between metalheads.
Right now a guy who listens to a Progressive Death Metal band where all the band members are vegan...
Most likely won't get along with someone who listens to something different.
And that's because metal isn't universal anymore as it used to be.
We can no longer just hang out and talk about music with other metalheads, even if we are all metalheads
Because nowadays metal is so diversified that pretty much the only thing we all have in common are the instruments.
Yes, that's the problem we are currently facing.
Even Opeth fans hate the band from certain album onward because of the lack of harsh vocals.
Exactly, we're all Opeth fans but there are fans of only old Opeth, and fans of new Opeth.
From the moment we make that separation then it pretty much all goes to shit.
Now, imagine now that we have a huge library of styles, instead of supporting each other and finding some common essence
We are trying to make the other guy be mistaken because it's turned into a competition, instead of working on something truly new.
We are just copying stuff, but making it relevant just for ourselves.
I believe we really need innovation so we don't get stuck in a comfortable place
Until someone comes and breaks the status quo in place, things will never change.
And that's all I have to say about that.
Yeah, me too. We wanted to share this with you so we can get to know what you think of all this.
What do you propose? What's your hypothesis about everything? Do you agree or disagree with us?
Do you think we're crazy and we don't know what we're saying?
This is how we finish this debate in "El Rock show". My Name is Elric Epicness
And I'm Joe Blackwater.
And we want to know what do YOU think is going to happen to metal in the future.
Thanks for watching, that's all for today.
