Youtube daily report Mar 24 2017

Hah!

Look at how this one landed.

That's hilarious!

Look, this ones doing a dirt angel.

That... could have gone better.

Anyone keeping a body count?

... you're a computer.

Yeah and your shitty at parallel parking, too.

Forget it.

Kind of dangerous... stopping to get that suit of armor on the way out.

There was no way I was spending another second in that pink sarcophagus of shame.

You seem to have lost your new-found verbosity.

What do you mean?

Swearing is an uncomely personality trait.

Didn't stop you from having a jolly old time taking a swing with the old fuck stick, did it?

I don't swear.

You called me a dickless bust.

Yeah that was great.

... come to think of it... things are a bit hazey.

Still smells a bit funny in here.

Uh-huh.

We should get going.

So where are we going?

It's not... exactly that easy.

How do you mean?

It's not so much 'where is it' as 'who has it'.

Okay... so who has it?

A group...

Of...?

Individuals from....

From...

Let's just say... they aren't domestic.

Like... foreigners?

Yeah.

Let's go with that.

How do you know these people have it?

Because we gave it to them.

Oh, how'd that come about?

Triage... has some curious proclivities.

That may, or may not, have been... documented... in a way... that he would

not prefer to be seen.

They made a sex tape didn't they.

Yeah pretty much.

And they black mailed him?

In a manor of speaking.

A group of foreigners with incriminating material blackmailing a powerful and

unscrupulous individual for personal gain, who ever heard of that happening.

Are they dangerous?

Extremely.

Should we be worried?

How strong is that armor in the pelvic region?

Seems to be... pretty solid?

That should do then.

Foreigners huh?

Looks like they just got back from a bender.

And... these guys have the cannon.

Correct.

Well... okay lets go.

So what now?

We knock.

Uh huh.

*knock knock*

What, hey was that door?

Fuck if I know dude.

Naw, naw.

I don't think so.

*knock knock knock*

Whoa whoa there it is again.

Who the fuck knocks on a door at 2 in the afternoon?

Where's the fucking decorum.

Hold on I'll get it

*record scratch*

Okay jesus fucking christ who the hell-

Oh.

Vincent.

It's you.

And you brought... friends.

Quark.

What does Triage want, Vincent.

We told him not to send anyone around here.

Triage is dead.

Oh. No shit?

So what are you here for, you looking for a job?

We just want to talk, Quark.

We're in the middle of something.

Pun intended?

Ha, ha, Geico.

It will be quick.

All right... well.

It better be, we have a crazy quota to make.

I remember.

All right then.

Back to work assholes.

Jesus christ.

Bother!

Holy shit is that...

Reginald?

Oh god my derrier!

Is that you chosen ones?

Dear god can you help me?

Oh... heyyyyy Reginald.

Look we're kind of here on business.

...this is awkward.

Okay Vincent, let's hear it.

Sorry... not to derail the conversation or anything but umm... what... exactly...

are you doing here?

What does it look like we're doing here?

Some twisted shit for the dark web?

We're probing.

For... what exactly?

Upper management.

... right.

Makes... sense.

Quark, we need to talk about the ca-

*ringing*

Hold on a second.

He- hello?

He looks... a bit... strange.

He's light years away, which means he's a bit back-in-time.

I think about 2009 to be exact.

Can you hear me?

Is my mic on?

I can hear you boss.

I can't hear you Quark.

Can you hear me?

I can hear you boss.

Can you hear me.

I can hear you!

I can't see your lips moving!

Can you hear me?

We don't communicate with our mouths boss.

Damn it I wish we communicated with our mouths!

Oh!

What how do I do that?

Tim get over here and help me.

Is this it?

I don-t oh right.

Got it yes.

There we go.

Are you receiving me, master peon Quark.

I can... high chancellor Gary.

Quark... you seem to have taken your helmet off...

what kind of astronaut exploring an alien world takes their

helmet off?

Seems to be fine so far.

Right, right.

Reminds me I need to check in with the Prometheus crew, they haven't

checked in for a while.

Oh, well, whatever I'll do it later.

Anyway how are things?

Fine... did you...

want a status report or something... high chancellor?

No just kind of saying... hey whats up.

You still seeing that one female?

Umm... no we... broke up.

Are we still... under our probing quota?

Oh yes of course.

Why do you ask?

We umm... have a lot of work to do...

Oh right yes, right right.

All that probing, right.

Oh I did have something here.

The high council has mandated that we will be expanding our probing program

beyond the undulate initiative.

Oh fucking wonderful.

What was that!

Wonderful, chancellor!

What new specimens shall we secure for the mighty Zeta

Prime.

This species you sent us a report on, these "death claws" we find most

interesting.

If you could get us five hundred probings by the end of the week

that... that would just be great.

All right... my dude.

Happy probing... lets kick it, and like, grab a beer or

something when you get back.

Sure... chancellor.

Anything else.

Naw homie... keep it cool... out there.

Right.

Signing off then.

Indeed!

Hail Steve and Signing off.

How do I- oh here we go-

That guy.

Is.

The fucking worst.

Wait, what was that last part he said?

Oh... bad fucking luck Vincent.

Well, this took a sharp turn.

Hah!

Karma bitches!

Hope you enjoy playing puppet for these nair-do-wells, you cowardly sods!

I take it you're no longer interested in business conversations?

Well... not whatever you had in mind.

Are you sure you want to do this Quark?

You could always just go with it.

We'll be very gent-

Naw sorry I couldn't even finish that sentence.

It's going to hurt like a bitch.

Well, looks like a lot of people are about to die.

Whoa, whoa, whoa pump the breaks.

Got something to say before we pop off, dandy man?

Yeah, your technique is shit.

Come again?

Your probing.

It's amateur.

And what the fuck would you know about it.

Yeah, the man knows what he's talking about.

What's your quota?

We have like, 50000 more probes to do before we can get off this fucking rock

and go home.

How long does it take to do a probe?

About an hour.

Oh god!

It's only been ten minutes.

That... is a lot of probing.

What if I could show you how to get that down to thirty?

Would that be worthwhile to you?

Cut our work load in half?

That's a hell of a claim, spanks.

But would it be worth it to you laddy?

What do you want?

You have something we need.

The cannon.

The what?

... the holy hand cannon?

No idea what you're talking about.

Big... what gun Triage gave you?

Oh that thing is a gun?

We've been smoking out of that for months.

Wooooooow...

Yeah sure, it's yours.

Now time to make good on that claim.

Okay, stand aside.

Okay so what you have to do is really get in there-

-and make sure you move it around like this.

You were doing this, but you should do that.

And when you get here-

*gross noises and Raul giving instructions*

... I... think I need a cigarette.

My god.

You're a master.

Yeah don't mention it.

Anyway can we get the cannon now?

Sure thing it's in the rec room.

We'll grab it for you.

Can we take Regi the verbose here, while we're at it?

Sure we're done with him.

Looks like you lucked out this time Vincent.

I think we both did.

Oh and FYI, a legion of extra-dimensional marauders are chasing us and may show up

and kill you all.

What?

I thought we were trying to reduce collateral damage from here on out?

Okay, cracky whatever you say.

You're a fucking space alien, are you really going to pull that card?

... good point.

Okay well, good luck.

Grace with Professional Grace Answers Viewer Etiquette Questions - Duration: 5:44.

[APPLAUSE]

>> ALL RIGHT, WE ARE BACK.

WE ARE BACK WITH ETIQUETTE

EXPERT GRACE FOXWELL-MURDOCK.

NOW IT'S TIME TO TACKLE YOUR

QUESTIONS.

>> WE AS THE VIEWERS ABOUT

CERTAIN SITUATIONS THAT COULD

LEAVE YOU PUZZLED, REGARDING

HOW YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO ACT.

ARE YOU READY GRACE?

>> AND READY.

>> OUR FIRST QUESTION COMES

FROM DEEDEE.

SHE SAID WHAT IS PROPER

ETIQUETTE WHEN IT COMES TO MEN

WEARING HATS AND BUILDING OR AT

A TABLE.

>> WELL, I CAN TELL YOU THAT

HAT WEARING HAS TO DO WITH

RESPECT.

AND IN THE DAY, HATS WERE

ALWAYS REMOVED ENTERING ANY

BUILDING.

SO IF YOU ARE EATING INSIDE,

HATS OFF.

IT'S ALSO ANYTIME YOU HAVE A

PATRIOTIC EVENT, HATS ARE OFF.

IN BUILDINGS, I WOULD JUST HAVE

TO SAY THAT THEY ARE REMOVED

BECAUSE YOU RESPECT THE PEOPLE

AROUND YOU AND YOUR VIDEO.

AT THE TABLE, ABSOLUTELY NOT.

WE HAVE THIS THING, THIS

PHENOMENON CALLED HAT HAIR.

AND YOUNG PEOPLE ESPECIALLY

DON'T WANT TO WEAR THEM BECAUSE

OF WORN THEM FOR SO LONG AND

THERE IS A CERTAIN WAY.

BUT IF YOU WILL BE WITH FAMILY

AND NETWORKING EVENT, YOU GET

SOME GEL AND DO YOUR HAIR AND

YOUR GOOD TO GO.

>> IT'S INTENTIONAL.

>> WHEN YOU MEET PEOPLE, AND

ARE SUPPOSED TO TIP THEIR HAT.

IF YOU START A CONVERSATION,

YOU TAKE YOUR HAT OFF.

IF IT CONTINUES A MINUTE OR SO

LONGER, YOU CAN PUT YOUR HAT

BACK ON.

BUT HATS ARE NOT THE SAME IN

TIME, DEFINITELY NOT A DINNER.

MY GRANDCHILDREN, KNOW HOW TO

DINNER.

>> SOME THINGS JUST DON'T

CHANGE.

>> THAT'S RIGHT.

>> NUMBER TWO, THE NEXT

QUESTION COMES FROM A VIEWER

WHO SAID SOMETIMES I CALL A

CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND AN

CONNECTED TO SOMEONE WHO SPEAKS

VERY POOR ENGLISH.

IT'S VERY HARD FOR ME TO

UNDERSTAND.

I DON'T WANT TO HURT THE

PERSON'S FEELINGS.

WHAT DO I DO?

>> I LOVE THAT PART, NOT

WANTING TO HURT FEELINGS, BUT

YOU'RE TRYING TO DO A BUSINESS

WITH THIS PERSON ON THE LINE.

THERE ARE TWO VERY POLITE WAYS

TO DO IT.

YOU MAY ASKED TO A MANAGER AND

SAY I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOUR

MANAGER, WHICH COULD PUT YOU TO

A PERSON WAS MUCH MORE CLEAR

ENGLISH.

YOU COULD DO IS SAY I'M SORRY,

I HAVE TO GO, IN THE

CONVERSATION, AND CALL BACK.

MOST LIKELY, YOU WILL

DEFINITELY GET ANOTHER PERSON

TO HELP YOU.

>> IS IT IMPOLITE TO SIMPLY SAY

I'M HAVING A HARD TIME

UNDERSTANDING AND WE CAN YOU

REPEAT?

BUT IF IT CONTINUES AND IT

STOPS YOUR ABILITY TO DO THE

BUSINESS, THEN YOU MUST MAKE A

CHANGE.

HELPS THE PERSON TO KNOW THEY

NEED TO IMPROVE THEIR SKILL ON

THE PHONE.

AND I WOULD ALSO SAY IF YOU GET

EXCELLENT SERVICE FROM SOMEONE,

YOU SHOULD ASK TO A MANAGER AND

TELL THEM THAT.

THERE ARE ALSO SURVEYS YOU

HAVE A CUSTOMER SERVICE CALL,

AND YOU COULD MENTION THAT IN

THE SURVEY.

BECAUSE IT HELPS THE COMPANY.

>> ABSOLUTELY.

AND I LIKE THIS ONE.

I HAVE AN ACQUAINTANCE I

DON'T, BUT THIS PERSON DOES.

I HAVE AN ACQUAINTANCE WAS

ALWAYS ASKING ME TO HANG OUT.

I THINK SHE THINGS THAT WE ARE

CLOSE FRIENDS.

I DON'T THINK SO, AND I SIMPLY

DON'T WISH TO TO SPEND TIME

WITH HER.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?

>> THAT IS A TOUGH ONE.

AS ANOTHER CASE WE DON'T WANT

TO HURT SOMEBODY'S FEELINGS.

OUR LIVES ARE VERY BUSY.

THERE ARE THINGS THAT YOU CAN

SAY WHEN SOMEONE CONTINUOUSLY

CALLS YOU AND WANTS TO GO OUT.

YOU SAY OH, I WOULD LOVE TO DO

THAT, BUT I CAN'T DO IT RIGHT

NOW.

AND OTHERS IN RESPONSE WITH ME,

MY LIFE IS SO FULL RIGHT NOW,

COULD WE DO THIS ANOTHER TIME?

YOU DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE TO

SAY I'M SORRY, I CAN'T GO.

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN IS THE PERSON

COULD CONTACT YOU AND SAY I

REALLY DON'T FEEL LIKE YOU'RE

GETTING ME, I DON'T THINK YOU

WANT TO BE AROUND ME, AND

THAT'S WHEN YOU SAY I'M SORRY,

MY LIFE HAS BEEN SO FULL, YOU

DON'T HAVE TO MAKE A LOT OF

EXCUSES.

THE BIGGEST THING IS, DON'T

LIE.

YOU CAN GET CAUGHT IN THE LIE,

BUT JUST AS SINCERE AS

POSSIBLE.

THEY WILL EVENTUALLY GET THE

MESSAGE.

>> ALL RIGHT, LET ME SEE HERE.

FINALLY, A COWORKER OF MINE

THIS WAS SENT IN FROM DEBBIE.

A COWORKER OF MINE DRIVES ME

CRAZY.

[LAUGHTER]

>> DO WE WRITE IS WHEN?

[LAUGHTER]

>> WAS ABOUT TO SAY, WHO ARE

YOU TALKING ABOUT?

>> SHE'S ALWAYS HANGING OUT AT

MY DESK AND I CAN'T GET ANY

WORK DONE.

HOW DO I AWKWARDLY TELL HER

LEAVE ME ALONE?

>> WELL, IT'S GOING TO FEEL

AWKWARD, PROBABLY.

IN GOING ALONG WITH THE

QUESTION PREVIOUSLY, WOMEN

MOSTLY ARE GUILTY OF THIS

BECAUSE WE ARE NURTURERS, AND

WE CARE ABOUT PEOPLE SO MUCH.

BUT IF YOU HAVE A COWORKER WHO

IS CONSTANTLY AT YOUR DESK, YOU

CAN SIMPLY SAY I HAVE GOT TO

GET THIS DONE.

I'M ON A DEADLINE.

PLEASE EXCUSE ME.

CAN WE TAKE THIS UP AT BREAK WE

I WILL MEET YOU IN THE BREAK

ROOM LATER, THAT KIND OF THING.

WITH A LITTLE FIGURE ON YOUR

DESK AND SAY IF YOU SEE THIS,

JANEL, IF YOU SEE THIS ON MY

DESK, I AM FLAT-OUT BUSY AND

YOU JUST KNOW NOT TO COME OUT.

THERE USED TO BE A CLOTHESPIN

ON A COLOR THAT PEOPLE WOULD

SAY I'M BUSY WITH A CLOTHESPIN,

JUST DON'T APPROACH ME, IT

WOULDN'T BE A GOOD IDEA.

SEE YOU CAN DO ONE OF TWO WAYS

ARE TALK ABOUT PRODUCTIVITY.

IT COULD BE SOMETHING THAT

TRAINING NEEDS TO HAPPEN AT

THAT BUSINESS.

BECAUSE, IF PEOPLE DON'T HAVE

ENOUGH TO DO, AND THE

DELEGATION OF JOBS MAY NOT BE

WORKING.

SO UPPER ADMINISTRATION MIGHT

WANT TO LOOK INTO THAT.

>> THERE WE GO.

This Is Your Brain On GPS - Duration: 4:56.

Pretty soon, figuring out your blood type might be as easy as squeezing a drop of blood

onto a piece of paper.

Last week, a team of Chinese researchers reported in the journal Science Translational Medicine

that they'd come up with a new test to see whether you have A, B, AB, or O blood, in

as few as 30 seconds.

Because you barely need any equipment or time, this invention could help with emergency blood

transfusions and save lives.

Your blood type is determined by what kind of antigens decorate the outside of your red

blood cells.

Antigens are sugars and proteins that immune systems can recognize, to help defend against

foreign invaders.

If you have the A antigen, you have type A blood; if you have the B antigen, you're

type B.

If you have both, you're AB, and if you have neither, you're O.

Normally, blood testing involves two methods to make sure it's right.

Because picking the wrong blood for a transfusion can make your immune system go haywire and,

like kill you.

Forward testing checks for antigens, by mixing a blood sample with either A or B antibodies.

If you have A antigens, it'll clump with A antibodies.

But not with B antibodies.

Reverse, or back, testing, does the opposite.

It checks for what antibodies you have in the liquid part of your blood, called plasma,

by seeing if it clumps with red blood cells known to have A or B antigens.

So, reverse testing is a great way to double-check your forward result.

But even the speediest labs have to centrifuge your blood to get the plasma, and can't

do the test much faster than 10 minutes.

If you're seriously hurt on a battlefield, you don't have the equipment or time for

that!

Enter the paper test.

It still relies on the fact that antibodies and antigens clump together, but it uses a

dye that changes color depending on whether it touches whole blood or just plasma.

After you drip some blood on a forward test strip, it runs into A and B antibodies that

are dried onto the paper, before reaching two patches of dye.

If you have type A blood, red blood cells will clump on the A antibody side, so only

the plasma will reach the dye, turning it a teal color.

Nothing will clump on the B side, so the full sample will reach the dye and turn it brown.

So whether one, both, or neither side turns teal, you can figure out your blood type.

For double-checking, they made a strip with the reverse test on it too.

It has a thin membrane that filters the blood so the plasma can be checked for antibodies,

either forming clumps or not before touching the dye.

When the researchers tested their invention, they got the forward result in 30 seconds

and the reverse one in 2 minutes, with 99.9% accuracy.

These paper tests aren't being used by doctors yet, but the researchers hope we'll be seeing

them in the next year or two.

Now, while some scientists are studying blood, others are studying blood flow in the brain.

Specifically, in a paper this week in Nature Communications, a team of neuroscientists

discovered how certain brain regions act differently when we're navigating with or without help

from GPS.

The researchers had 24 volunteers take a 2 hour virtual tour through Soho, a fashionable

district in the West End of London, to learn the area.

And the next day, the volunteers were quizzed about how to get from various point As to

point Bs.

Everything was still virtual: the scientists made videos of the walking routes, which paused

at intersections.

Then, they told participants which way to go, or asked them to choose – kind of like

a Google Maps Choose-Your-Own-Adventure.

While all this was happening, they monitored the volunteers' brains with an fMRI machine,

to see if different regions became more active with different kinds of routes.

The researchers found that the back part of the right hippocampus was active when people

who were actively navigating entered new streets, especially when there was a change in the

number of connecting streets.

But when the volunteers didn't have to choose where to go next – kind of like blindly

following GPS instructions – their hippocampi hardly lit up.

We know the hippocampus is important for spatial memory, but we haven't been so sure how

it's involved in navigation.

In this experiment, the scientists think the hippocampus is keeping track of all the possible

walking paths, to help you simulate different ways your journey could go.

And if you're just passively following instructions, and not using your hippocampus, you might

not actually be learning how to get around.

These results fit with a previous experiment done with London taxi cab drivers, who need

to pass a notoriously difficult test covering London's 25,000 or so streets in a 10 kilometer

radius.

Researchers imaged the brains of drivers before they started training, and again three to

four years later, after they took the test.

And people who passed the test actually gained more brain tissue in the back of their hippocampus

than those who failed.

So, if you want to give your brain a good workout, maybe pass on the GPS if you don't

definitely need it.

Nunes regrets briefing Trump before Intelligence panel - Duration: 2:39.

Nunes regrets briefing Trump before Intelligence panel

BY MARK HENSCH

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) said Thursday that he regrets

informing President Trump of surveillance affecting the presidents transition team

before he updated his panel.

Its a judgement call on my part, he told reporters when asked why he spoke

with Trump and the media before House Intelligence Committee Democrats.

At the end of the day, sometimes you make the right decision, sometimes you dont,

Nunes added, noting he could not show the panel information that was given to him by

a source.

Nunes declined to disclose his sources identity when asked if it was the White House.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN

Thursday that Nunes had apologized "in a generic way" for his actions.

Nunes said Wednesday that the U.S. intelligence community incidentally collected information

on members of Trumps transition team, ultimately putting it into various intelligence reports.

Details about the U.S. persons involved in the incoming administration with little

or no apparent foreign intelligence value were widely disseminated in intelligence community

reports, he told reporters.

I want to be clear none of this surveillance was related to Russia or the investigation

of Russian activities or of the Trump team, he added, noting he believes the information

was collected legally.

Nuness remarks on Wednesday added a new wrinkle to Trumps claims earlier this month

that former President Barack Obama tapped his wires at Trump Tower in New York City

last year.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the House Intelligence Committees ranking Democrat, voiced frustration

Wednesday over Nuness handling of the information.

If accurate, this information should have been shared with members of the committee,

but it has not been, he said.

"The chairman also shared this information with the White House before providing it to

the committee, another profound irregularity, given that the matter is currently under investigation.

I have expressed my grave concerns with the chairman that a credible investigation cannot

be conducted this way."

Finding a New Path When You're Attached to the Old and Scared of Failing - Duration: 9:32.

Finding a New Path When Youre Attached to the Old and Scared of Failing

By Dylan Harper

The difficulty of finding, let alone staying on a path was brought to mind recently when

I got lost in a maze at a childrens amusement park.

Seriously lost.

All endings are just beginnings.

We just dont know it yet. ~Mitch Albom

In the end I scrambled under the maze to get out.

I didnt like the feeling of hitting up against walls, turning and trying, and then

finding another wall blocking my path.

Mazes are designed to confuse, and together with the summer heat, Id had enough.

As I came out from under the fence, someone jokingly called out Cheater! and they

were correct.

In that moment I wasnt sticking at it.

It made me think, isnt this sometimes the label we give ourselves when were on a

path that isnt right or isnt working, and were considering quitting?

Or we want to take a shortcut, grasp an unexpected opportunity, or take a different path from

our predecessors?

It can be helpful to have a sense of direction.

Not having a plan for what we want in life can result in low motivation and a sense of

purposelessness.

For many people it can be very stressful due to the societal pressure to have a plan for

your life.

Sometimes Im surprised at how early this pressure arises.

Some young people I work with in my clinic feel pressure to decide what path to take

at ages thirteen and fourteen.

They share their concerns about every single grade they receive and their fear that if

theyre not good enough theyll have no future and a bad job.

Some might think that these young people are showing signs of being driven or highly motivated.

From my perspective, it can make life quite narrow to live with so much anxiety and pressure

about getting things right.

Living in constant fear of a misstep is no way to live.

After all, life is full of missteps.

Other people feel overwhelmed about which path to choose.

They ask, What if I choose the wrong path?

What if I make a mistake?

What if when I actually choose something, I dont like it?

What if Im no good at it?

Some others will say, I know what I dont want to do, I just dont know what I want

to do. Sometimes this leads to an almost paralyzed I dont know what I want to

do position.

In times gone by, people often finished school, got a job, and stayed in that career or job

for life.

However, modern life is not like this.

Changing economic and market conditions mean people are required to be more flexible and

change employment type over the course of their life.

So, in some ways, it seems futile for people to feel pigeonholed into making one choice,

as its likely there will be many choices down the road.

When I talk with people who are struggling to choose or find a path, I often share my

own story about how I became a clinical psychologist.

My story is a classic example of how making a choice thats not a good fit for you isnt

the end of the world.

Often, like in my story, it can lead to an even better outcome.

During my high school years I fell in love with singing and drama, so I hatched a plan

to take up musical theatre as a career.

The first sign that this probably wasnt going to work out was when I didnt get

a place in my first choice of study.

However, I chose to ignore this sign and, remaining hopeful, took up a position in a

classical music program, even though I didnt want to be an opera singer.

As the year wore on it became clear to me that this was not for me.

Studying music at school had been fun, but studying music full time and mixing only with

other music students was stifling and even boring.

A meeting with the dean mid-year, regarding my failure to progress at the level the program

required, made the future clear.

I saw the year out, but I knew I would only ever be an average music student.

After spending a year around people who were more suited to it, I knew I had neither the

talent nor the high levels of extraversion needed to succeed in a performance career.

It was kind of embarrassing.

It was my first experience of failure.

It was also an opportunity.

That part of me that was itching to learn more about the world, about people, about

life outside of the narrow world of classical music, was set free.

But what to choose?

Id spent years honing my musical ability and not considering doing anything else.

Fortunately for me, doing what didnt fit had helped me to define what might.

So I chose something that would expand my knowledge and ideas and that would help me

serve others.

One of the things that had bothered me about classical music study is that it didnt

seem to contribute or benefit others much.

I chose a general psychology degree based on the fact that I wanted to know more about

people, and away I went.

Instantly the fit was better.

I felt engaged, stimulated, motivated to attend, and alive.

These were good signs that I was on the right path.

I share this story with people who are having difficulty making a choice because it incorporates

two core areas that keep people stuck when finding or changing their pathfear of failure

and letting go of past ideals.

Dealing with the Fear of Failure

Underpinning the struggle that many of us have with finding or changing a path is the

fear of failure.

If you dont choose, you cant fail.

Conversely, if you dont choose you cannot succeed either.

How do we move past the fear of failure?

1.

Acknowledge that its normal to feel anxious about making a choice.

Having some anxiety about the choice does not make the choice wrong.

There is little certainty in any path, so there is unlikely to be a time where you will

feel completely at ease with your decision.

2.

Practice managing your anxiety with breathing, mindfulness, and helpful self-talk.

Deep breathing is key to managing physical anxiety symptoms, as it calms the nervous

system.

Mindfulness teaches us that we only have this moment and that its futile to try to control

the future.

Helpful self-talk helps ease anxiety by reducing the impact of negative predictions.

For example: If you failed this, youll fail everything could be changed to Many

successful people have changed their path or experienced failures, so it doesnt mean

I will fail.

3.

Look for stories of successful people who had missteps or changed their path.

Reading about people who made a career change can lessen the hold of negative predictive

thoughts and old beliefs about failure.

Letting Go of Past Ideals

The difficulty with changing your path can also be associated with investment in your

old one.

You may have put a lot of effort into achieving the goal at the end of that path.

You may have told a lot of people about it.

You may even be a little or a lot in love with the idea of reaching that goal.

When you need to or have to change your path, it can involve a sense of loss.

Your mind may tell you its all been a waste of time.

To handle these difficulties:

1.

Let go of the goal by acknowledging your sense of loss and practicing acceptance.

Its normal to feel sad about letting go of a past.

Acknowledge those feelings without sinking in them and getting stuck.

Notice the feelings and let them pass.

2.

Address and challenge self-critical thoughts.

If you experience self-critical thoughts about trying for your goal such as Who are you

to even think you could have that? you may benefit from changing it to something

more helpful, such as I did my best but it wasnt for me.

I will find something for me or the simple I could never know if I didnt try.

3.

Focus on the positive of the current path.

As much as you can, be in the present moment.

Cultivate that skill through mindfulness practice.

4.

Address concerns about futility.

Know that the time spent on your old path wasnt pointless.

You most likely gained skills and insights from your journey so far that will help you

either now or in the future.

For example, my knowledge of the performing arts has helped me more times than I count

as a clinical psychologist.

It helps me relate to clients who are musicians or that work or study in that area, and it

helps me relate to performance anxiety.

Life can be more rewarding when youre on a path.

In fact, many people say that the journey can be more satisfying than the final outcome.

With these strategies, you can avoid becoming paralyzed by the common blocks that prevent

people moving forward and experiencing life fully.

Allow yourself to live life to the full by taking a path knowing that you can change

it if you need to.

Beach Full of Skeletons + Riding INTO Ice?! | Bucket List Arctic Expedition | Canada - Duration: 10:27.

Hello, and

welcome to another episode of Coffeetime.

This is part five in my Arctic Storytime series where I tell the story of an Arctic

Expedition that I went on with Astronaut Chris Hadfield and nine other really cool people

including some awesome youtubers. If you missed the first four parts of the series I

have put those videos into a nifty playlist on Youtube for you right here. This video starts off

where the last one ended up except there's a little bit of a bigger distance gap

and that's because we were initially supposed to stop at Cape York. Cape

York is an area on the very North Western part of Greenland which I'll show you in a nifty map over here. And

it's a site where

there are a few meteorites that date back to 10,000 years.

But we couldn't stop there because we entered a little bit of a storm system

and so there was very limited visibility and the Captain and the Expedition decided to move

300 nautical miles North from our previous position. This is pretty much the point in the journey

when

things started to look very

Arctic and by that I mean that we started entering colder temperatures,

colder Waters,

there was a lot more sea ice and some of the footage that I'm going to share in this video

particularly a little bit towards the middle and end is some of my favorite footage

I've ever shot in my life because we were in an area where we were entering the midnight sun and

because we were completely disconnected from the world we had no access to the internet,

no access to TV or news or our phones or anything like that I

found myself losing track of days and time and

everything pretty much. So for the rest of this series

things may not have happened

in the order that I'm presenting them in but in my head they did...

because I completely lost track of time at this point in the journey. If that makes any sense at all.

Things are about to get a little surreal is what I'm saying.

We

ended up taking that littles zodiac. Zodiacs are life rafts

that are motorized that can take you from something like an ice breaker, which we were on,

to the shore. We ended up on a beach that was full of rocks and

skulls and bones and

lots of scattered remains of the past and of

life. It was maybe one of the most desolate places I had ever been to at that point.

Something about it really hit me emotionally in the gut because we washed up to this area where there was

this shed that had been abandoned and there were shards of glass in it

and it looked like at some point in time so many things went down there

especially since it was surrounded by so many different animal bones.

The hike itself was really interesting because we were in Arctic tundra and

because we were in the Arctic tundra

this particular area has very

springy ground which I talked a little bit about here. We're going further along towards

the glacier. Should be about a three hour pretty

rough hike.

The tundra that we're walking on is

quite springy and full of rocks and bone. Your feet

just sink right down

into the ground

causing you to have to pick up your legs again for the next step. So it's pretty intense. As you can probably see, the wind is

quite strong. I think I think this might be one of the most desolate places I

have ever personally been to. There's like no other humans here

except for us currently.

There was a really cool point during this hike where the person who was leading our hike

allowed us to

pick up some of the lichen and try it.

We're currently eating the lichen off the rocks here.

It's black

and we were told we could eat it

It has a very plant taste

and it's not very crunchy. It's actually spongy.

Lichen is one of the oldest organisms on Earth. It grows

quite a bit in the area that we were hiking and it was all over the rocks. We as

a rule were not allowed in general to touch or disturb

anything on our hikes unless we were told that we could because the Expedition was very

concerned, and rightfully so, with keeping the areas that we were in intact and

making sure that we left with only our memories and that we weren't disturbing the natural balance of everything.

To be able to actually touch something and taste it and think about it in that way

therefore was really special in that moment. Once we were back on the ship at this point in the journey - on most days

as I said in another video, I spent a lot of time alone on

the ship I would walk up and down the different decks of the ship. This was a

functioning icebreaker ship and because it was a working vessel it was very no frills.

And I love that actually. I love the ruggedness and the feel of it and the feel of being

on a ship that was used for

breaking through ice and

was very capable. So some of the things that I would do on the ship would be: spend long periods of time

listening to things like the anchor being dropped which I think is an incredible sound...

Or I would look around and enjoy the way that the sun would hit the water and

go into the zen state of consciousness

watching the sun glaze the water and kiss it.

It was some of the most memorable times on the trip. Our journey was taking us from

Greenland

West into the Canadian High Arctic and the Canadian High Arctic would be where we would get

closer to the North Pole and enter areas that had a lot more ice and

quite unusual landscapes. One of those areas

was called Hell Gate.

What really blew me away about Hell Gate was that because we were so close

to the

surrounding

mountainous landscape

you could really get a feel

for the different rock

formations and on the day when we went through Hell Gate I spent an inordinate amount of time looking out

under the storm clouds. A storm had just moved in and the clouds were brilliantly dramatic.

That along with the tiny bits of ice that would lead the eye to these

magnificent mountainous structures

was one of the most mesmerizing

places I had seen and I spent a long time

just thinking about life and thinking a lot about

what it meant being a human on the planet in a place that was so desolate and

so

unforgiving that it forced me to have to confront and

contemplate a lot of things that I was going through in my life.

I want to read something that I wrote when I got back and when I posted a photo from this area.

Will never forget moments like this

when snow is just a whisper of a thought and when the mountains jutted up from the water like heartbeats.

I stood there for as long as I could

my face caressed by the cold until all the voices of ghosts from the past who proclaimed that I was not good enough,

that I was not ever enough, that I was not enough of enough

were drowned out by natures roaring silence

exorcised across the sea up through a parting in the clouds and

for the first time ever my heart was as vast and wild as the landscape that stretched out before me - my future

unfolding on the waves - dark and mysterious and full of promise.

I hope that you enjoyed this episode of coffeetime. If you are new to my channel I

upload videos twice a week and

I will leave a nifty little playlist up here where you can check out of all of my latest videos

so you can have a look around and see what my channel is about.

I hope that you're all doing well wherever you are in the world

and I will see you in the next episode of coffeetime early next week. Bye!
