I have something you do not have.
I have one extra chromosome in the cells of my body.
This chromosome is very, very tiny.
In fact, you cannot see it with your eyes.
But everybody can see how it effects my life.
I am short.
I have slanted eyes.
And I learn slowly.
This tiny change in my body
has caused my life to be very different from yours.
I began school when I was two months old.
Special teachers came to my house
and worked with my mom and dad
to teach them how to teach me.
I struggled to learn things that most babies did easily.
When I was a year old, I started going to Fraser school three times a week.
And by the time I was two, my Mom sent me off on a bus for a full day of school.
As I grew, I worked very hard in school.
I learned to talk. I learned to read.
And I watched "normal" children. I tried very hard to be like them.
I thought I was like them.
But, everywhere I went people stared at me because I looked different...because I was different.
I loved going to church with my Mom and Dad and my brothers
I loved to pray and sing and look at my children's Bible while the pastor preached
My Bible has beautiful pictures. I really like the picture of Jesus with the little children.
Wooddale did not have a special Sunday School class for me.
It was hard for me to learn so my Mom and Dad taught me about Jesus at home.
When I was 14 years old, my Mom told me what it means to have Down Syndrome.
I was very sad. I wanted to be a regular person. I did not want to be different
I wanted to have girlfriends and boyfriends and drive a car.
And graduate high school, and college and get married and have kids.
And be normal.
I wondered why I was made this way.
When I was 16 I was in Arizona visiting my grandparents
My grandpa and I were watching Billy Graham on TV one night.
Mr. Graham was explaining how God me special;
how God knew about me before I was born;
how God had a plan for my life;
how God loved me and made me just the way I am.
I understood. I went up to the TV and knelt down and prayed with Billy Graham
I received Jesus into my heart and guess what? God gave me his Holy Spirit. I was born again.
Like my extra chromosome, you cannot see Him with your eyes. But you can see how He affects my life.
Soon after this, my Mom had a long talk with one of the pastors.
And we decided to have a special Sunday School class for teens like me at Wooddale.
Janet Fredrickson was very excited about this and she found teachers and a program. We have had a wonderful Sunday School class for the last several years.
In this class I have fellowship and learning and prayer with special teachers and friends who understand me and care about me and love Jesus.
A very important day for me was being baptized here at Wooddale last year.
God has given me a purpose. I do not worry about being regular or being different.
In fact, I have many good friends.
I graduated High School and I have had a boyfriend for about a year.
I try every day to show the love of Jesus.
I work at a nursing home. I bring fresh water to the residents.
It may sound like a boring job, but I try to bring the living water of Jesus to everyone there...plus a little love from Debbie.
I do not mind when people stare at me anymore. I hope they are not looking at the extra chromosome.
I hope it's because they can see the love of Jesus in me.
