Well, I started when I was really young, in 1991 as a nurse on the infants and toddlers

unit, and I just really liked working with kids, so I stayed with it and I loved it and

then I decided to go a little further, and go back to school and be a nurse practitioner.

So I did that.

And I've been doing urology now for six years.

So with the children, I try to earn their trust by getting down on their level, and

speaking directly to them and playing with them and the families, you really have to

follow through with what you say you're going to do, so I always make sure that I give them

call backs or do whatever I tell them I'm going to do, so that they trust that I'm going

to do what I say.

Well, maybe it's because I'm a mother, but I just really care for these kids and you

know, I think that the parents realize that I nurture the children just like they're my

own.

I hope everybody does that, but I know personally that I tend to treat the kids like they're

my babies.

I feel like we have a great team here at Sacred Heart and the doctors that I work with and

the nurses, they just really, we work well together and everybody seems to get along

really well.

And we, I feel like we're all on the same page, that we want to help these kids and

do the best we can for them.

So it's nice to be in a really good environment that works well together.

We Don't Actually Know Where the Sun Came From - Duration: 6:57.

Space is packed with all kinds of mysteries; that's part of what makes it cool.

Some of those mysteries, though, are closer to home than others.

Like, here's a surprising one: We actually don't know where the Sun came from!

According to what we know about star formation, the Sun probably formed from a huge cloud

of gas, along with a bunch of stellar siblings, stars that formed in the same place out of

the same stuff.

Except, we can't find evidence of that cloud, or the Sun's family, anywhere.

Our little Sun is all on its own.

Get your tissues ready, because this is basically waiting to be turned into a Pixar short.

Even though we can't find the Sun's family, we're pretty confident it has to exist because

of how most stars form.

The current model requires that a bunch of stars get born together out of a big ol'

gas cloud, called a molecular or giant molecular cloud depending on its size.

Eventually, because space is super vicious, the clouds get eaten up or dispersed by their

star children.

After that, the stars, and their planets, if they've accumulated any, might separate

or might move together for a while in a so-called open cluster.

Then, over time, all the little gravitational pulls and tugs from the member stars build

up and finally send the stars on different trajectories.

These stars can end up all over a galaxy, but they can still be identified as members

of the same family because they typically have similar ages, and often have really similar

compositions.

There can be plenty of variation within a cluster, but there are still some general

trends we can look for.

Most stars don't stick around to form open clusters, but we have evidence that the Sun

was one of the few who stayed with its family a bit longer.

For one thing, the orbital motions of the Kuiper Belt objects, most notably the planetoid

Sedna, strongly suggest some gravitational interaction with other stars, probably in

a relatively dense group.

Otherwise, they likely couldn't have been jostled into their current orbits.

There's also evidence, like the excess amount of heavy elements in the Sun, and the presence

of uranium in the Earth, that there was a supernova near our star when it formed.

It could've come from a huge, short-lived member of a larger stellar nursery, like an

older sibling who peaked too early.

We have plenty of reason to believe that the Sun was born in an open cluster, but we can't

find anyone else from that stellar nursery, even though we've been looking all over.

It's like Finding Dory, but with a lot more math.

For a while, astronomers thought the Messier 67 open cluster, or M67 for short, was the

most likely candidate.

It's an open cluster about 2700 light years away, in the Cancer constellation.

It's a pretty dense group, which would match our hypotheses, and it's also about five

billion years old.

That's really old for an open cluster, but it's about as old as the Sun!

Admittedly, dating stars is really hard, so there are some big error bars on that measurement.

But it's in the ballpark, and astronomers love ballparking.

So its age and density make M67 a good candidate, but its orbital path around the galaxy is

way different from the Sun's, and that's become a big source of debate.

On the one hand, this might not be a problem.

Because members of open clusters interact gravitationally, it's possible that a star

could get kicked out and end up with some different orbital parameters.

But on the other hand, the kind of kick that the Sun would have needed to get on its current

path is super huge, like, too big for it to have kept its baby solar system.

So the fact that we're here is some evidence against the M67 hypothesis.

That is, unless that kick happened really early on.

An early, gentle nudge, given a lot of time, could have gotten the Sun way off course.

So, we're still not exactly sure what's going on here!

What we could really use is more data.

Thankfully, there are a few projects, both launched in 2013, that are helping with that.

One is the Gaia mission, run by the European Space Agency, and the other is the GALAH project,

run by the Australian Astronomical Observatory.

Together, they're collecting astrometry and astrochemistry data of a truly enormous

quantity of stars, or data about their positions, movements, and chemistry.

Astrometry is good for finding former and current open clusters, because members of

them move together.

And even if the Sun's siblings have dispersed, we could use current star positions to calculate

the cluster's original location.

Astrochemistry may also prove to be a smoking gun.

Since the Sun is so metallic from that supernova explosion, its sibling stars may have similarly

high metallicities.

All we have to do is find stars that match those descriptions!

Gaia is working to get astrometric and astrochemical data on a /billion/ stars from an orbit near

Earth.

GALAH, on the other hand, is just doing astrochemistry on a more modest million stars, and it's

operating from the ground.

Both missions will wrap up over the next few years.

After that, it's up to astronomers to make sense of the mountains of data!

Between the two surveys, we're characterizing tons and tons of stars.

We haven't found the Sun's siblings yet, but these surveys are currently our best chance

at it.

Besides being a nice end to a story, understanding where the Sun originated and what it was like

there can also help us understand why our solar system turned out like it did.

Still, even if these projects don't give us the data we need to solve the Sun's mystery,

they'll give us incredible insights into the formation and evolution of the galaxy,

which is a pretty sweet consolation prize.

But there are some puzzles we can solve about where stars come from on Brilliant.org.

Gareth Southgate demands 'perfect' preparation for Panama

Gareth Southgate is demanding a week of "perfectly" executed preparation as England look to build on the victory against Tunisia and close in on the World Cup knockout phase.

Displaying impressive character at the end of a game that had started with no little skill, Harry Kane headed home his second goal to secure the Three Lions a deserved 2-1 win in Monday's Group G opener.

It was England's first winning start to a major tournament since 2006, and puts them in a strong position to reach the last-16 heading into Sunday's match against minnows Panama in Nizhny Novgorod.

There appears little chance of complacency seeping in, though, given Southgate's focus and the players' hunger to improve."There are always things (to improve)," the England boss said.

"We are a team that are improving and developing, and therefore there will always be things that we can get better at.

"We're a long way from perfection.

What pleased me is that there has been a long period of work gone into (Monday's) result from all the players and all of the support team.

"If you don't get the win, even though you've done so many things right, that can breed a little bit of doubt.

"Of course there would be a different feel externally, so the next four, five days would be a little less comfortable for people."What we've got to make sure is we enjoy it but we don't have comfort for the next four or five days.

We have got a job to do.

"We have to prepare as perfectly for Panama to make sure we get the result in that game we need.

"I think the players know it's hard to win a match in the World Cup against any opposition and Tunisia were opposition we respected.

"But Panama for 45 minutes were obdurate opponents against Belgium and we'll have to prepare 100 per cent right to win it.

"It took until the second half for Belgium to break down Panama's resolve, going on to run out 3-0 victors and sit atop of Group G on goal difference.

Patience was key for Roberto Martinez's men in that match, just as it was for England when grabbing three points against Tunisia.

Perhaps it was inevitable that England would taper off given the lack of experience within the group, but the players' composure and focus should not be underestimated.

Harry Maguire ended particularly strongly given his nervy start, earning high praise from former England defender Southgate.

"I think his potential is huge," he said of the Leicester centre-back, who provided the assist for Kane's late winner.

"He's probably the one player – him and (Jordan) Pickford – who haven't played in cup finals or on big-stage Champions League games in the past.

"Maybe it was a voyage of discovery for him (more) than some of the others but he has great composure, really good defensive qualities.

"Most things land on his bonce in both penalty areas and he's got a really lovely, calm temperament.

"For me, he has outstanding potential and I hope (the game) has given him a lot of belief.

Maguire was among nine World Cup debutants in the starting line-up against Tunisia.

It is the same opposition that Southgate made his bow against on the world stage 20 years ago, when Glenn Hoddle's men opened the tournament with a 2-0 win against the North Africans.

"That match seems comfortable looking back to 98, but we scored a set-play and we scored our second goal after about 85 minutes," the England boss said.

"It was still a very tight game."The difference between now and 98 is at this time I was sat in a drug-testing room with Teddy Sheringham while everybody else was celebrating.

"(This time) I am able to at least experience a little bit of what the fans are feeling and the dressing room.

"As a coach, you're into looking at the game back on the way home and immediately focusing everybody around you on the next task, so the enjoyment lasts a bit less time.

World Cup Elimination Rules: How Teams Advance From Group | Heavy.com

Two teams advance from each group in the World Cup based on a points system.

With the World Cup underway, teams are starting to do the math on how they can avoid elimination.

The World Cup starts with 32 teams which are split into eight groups of four: Group A, Group B, Group C, Group D, Group E, Group F, Group G and Group H.

The top two teams in each group advance, and this is where the rules get a bit more complicated.

The standings are based on a point system where teams are awarded three points for a loss, one point for a draw and zero points for a loss.

All four teams in a group play one match against each other, meaning there are three matches in the group stage.

June 28 marks the final day of Group Stage play for the 2018 World Cup.

Teams are rewarded for winning their group by playing the second place team in another group.

Many times, teams have the same number of points after the group stage, and tiebreakers are used to determine which team advances.

Here's how FIFA describes the tiebreaker format, in order.

Greatest number of points obtained in all group matches.

Goal difference in all group matches.

Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

(If teams are still tied based on the above criteria) 4.

Greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned.

Goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned.

Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned.

Greatest number of points obtained in the fair play conduct of the teams based on yellow and red cards received in all group matches as follows: yellow card (minus 1 point), indirect red card as a result of a second yellow card (minus three points), direct red card (minus four points), yellow card and direct red card (minus five points).

Only one of the above deductions shall be applied to a player in a single match.

Let's explore a practical scenario to see how the tiebreakers play out.

Team A and Team B both finish the group stage with four points.

The first tiebreaker is goal difference.

Team A scored eight goals and allowed four goals.

Team B scored 6 goals and allowed three goals.

This gives Team A a goal differential of four, which places them above Team B who has a goal differential of three, meaning Team A advances to the Round of 16.

If the two teams ended up with the same goal differential, the next tiebreaker is total goals scored.

If neither team has a higher number of goals, it goes to the head-to-head matchup.

The next tiebreaker would be the team who scored the most goals in a match.

The rest of the tiebreakers are a bit more complex with the final tiebreaker being FIFA casting lots leaving chance to determine who advances.

Let's hope none of the groups come to this.

Things are a lot more straightforward in the Round of 16 as there are no ties.

Games must have a winner, which means there is extra time then penalty kicks as ways to conclude matches, if necessary.

Once the we are left with 16 teams, the World Cup becomes a single elimination tournament.

James Rodriguez leads Colombias World Cup squad.

Colombia is hoping they can replicate their magic from 2014 in the 2018 World Cup.

James Rodriguez is back on the squad, but enters the tournament battling a bit of a calf injury.

After qualifying for the first time since 1998, Colombia made the quarterfinals in the 2014 World Cup, and were one of the surprises of the tournament.

Colombia finds themselves in a very winnable Group H with Poland, Senegal and Japan.

The only thing that could seem to derail their chances would be if Rodriguez's injury lingers.

If you believe in Colombia's squad, they are a nice dark horse to win the World Cup with 40 to 1 odds.

They are a slight favorite to win Group H at +130.

ESPN's Tito Pucceti notes Colombia is not running away from high expectations.

Because of the level of play shown by their footballers in Europe, Colombia should have as an objective to play five games in Russia 2018 just as they did in Brazil 2014.

James Rodriguez, Radamel Falcao, Juan Guillermo Cuadrado and Davinson Sánchez are at their best and allow all Colombians to dream of another historical performance.

Heading into the World Cup, Colombia picked up wins against France and China, but lost to South Korea and Paraguay.

Colombia also had draws against Australia and Peru.

It will be interesting to see if Colombia can replicate their 2014 success as they transition from an underdog to the favorite to win their group.

Manager Jose Pekerman believes his players will have to take the next step forward for Colombia to make a deep run.

This left Colombia's fate in the hands of the already qualified Brazilians, who needed to beat Chile to push James and crew through.

Luckily, Brazil delivered a 3-0 smashing in São Paulo that night, putting an exclamation point on their dominance in the CONMEBOL group and punching Colombia's ticket to Russia.
