Henry: ... W h a t
Umu: Next we're reacting to NCT 127 Kevin: [sings scale degrees] 1-2-7!
Umu: Yeah, so... Lindsey: my boysssss
Umu: We're about to react to NCT 127's latest
2018 comeback Lindsey: whoop whoop Umu: NCT tried this genre to show a different side to their music since most of their past songs were very hip
hop-y or EDM or bad boyish. They wanted to release something that would make their fans relaxed while listening to it
This is composed by LD N noise
And the members said in a behind-the-scenes interview that this song is about connecting with their audience worldwide Peyton: 321 go!
Henry: ...What?
Peyton: it's almost like the opposite of slugging it's like very forward
but like it doesn't like necessarily like--- Charlotte: it's like a gentle nudge forward consistently
Elizabeth:The rhythm is sort of like limping a little
Like there's a lot of rhythm and then it stops and then you get the second hit, so it is really off kilter from the get-go
oh!!
Peyton: OKAY! Fiona: cool voices-- It's like gospel esque
Jarod: woah Katie: [sings jazzy descent]
Lindsey: They're all singing together too that's what's awesome, like their voices all like just blend--- yeah Fiona: there's some higher too
Henry: I am I'm at a loss right now actually, this is like a lot of different things
Charlotte: we got to the deep voice and I'm like WHOO--- EVERYTIME
Kevin: nice
Yeah
aw
When this model mixtures sound like the resolution-- I've never I haven't heard that many times
Charlotte: It's just so friendly-- Peyton: Yeah, it's also super f*cking dope, like C: yeah
Peyton: Sorry, those were two whole different things but I think it works.
Katie: I don't know. It's good. It's like a sexy song.
Jarod: I like how they keep reintroducing the kind of riff that they establishing in the beginning
Katie: [sings scale degrees] 2-5-1
Charlotte: I also just like the whole aesthetic of this music video it makes me very happy
Kevin: the staccato!
still weird harmonies
aw aw
aw
aw
OH
This is a song
Peyton: Yeah, and then even in the voices are like [sings]
[sings] it's like they're on the back side while--- Charlotte: they got like this whole like bluesy vibe blues pop vibe
Kevin: nice, you know combining the hook with some other---
nice
peyton: like the acapella
group type of sound at the end Charlotte: that was so--- I was about to say acapella
Peyton: Was really dope
Umu: yeah, what do you think about that song overall musically Katie: it was really fun some of the like the riffs
katie: [sings]
like the flat seven that was that was excellent. It was just like fun to sing along to like Jarod said it was just a good song
Jarod: [sings] Baa-baa budadeebabuh, I just-- is very tasteful really hip, you know the entire song like the choreography was hip
It was just all so good well balanced Katie: they'reall daddies J: all daddies
Charlotte: that was really enjoyable
That's like a song that you play at like aw this is so southern, like a backyard barbeque with all of your friends
Peyton: backyard bbq Charlotte: backyard bbq
Swimmin' in the pool invite all your friends over and you make some stuff on the bbq
Peyton: I really like the groove that they kind of set up it was like
kind of this like forward backward thing it was almost like a balanced seesaw and it was just like [sound effects]
Like there was like they kind of offset the like front drum
Sounds with like, you know singing on the back side, which was something I thought was really cool
Like they probably could have done that whole song acapella and it would have been very similar and still really really good
I think what added to is definitely like the beat that both peyton and I were digging
Because I think that just really helped to give it like a more poppy up beat vibe
But I just absolutely just think that the color of all their voices just worked so well to deliver like a poppy upbeat message
in their song which was just really cute and the whole aesthetic of like the sound and the music
Video was just like yes work. Yes get it. Lindsey: I'm so in love fiona: that was really cute. I really liked their voices in unison
Lindsey: Yeah Fiona: and like they were harmony harmonizing harmonyinglol
above it and they when they were singing "na na na" each time like it was powerful and that
Unison was kind of like overwhelming you know like imagine them like standing around
na na na na na na na around a mic
Lindsey: Like in the studio fiona: yeah that's probably funny
Yeah, so a lot of that you were saying "yeah"
"YEA", so care to go into more detail of why you're saying "Yeah" kevin: Well, there's a lot going on
First of all, let's go let's backtrack
The last "yeah" I said
Was when there was a little delay at the very end, you know, the thing that the song does well
It doesn't it doesn't feel lazy. Like every time the chorus comes there's a new bridge
It doesn't feel like it's sticking to the same chords it always feels like it's evolving. Yeah like [sound effect]
That that weird it almost sounds like water
It's like I could see you know, like the physics footage of water reversing. Isaac: It's like dumping the camera in water
KEvin: Also that I think something like that happened in the video
I might just be yeah, but um
that's one thing and then
The bridge where the chorus I don't even know what chord it landed on but then we just ended back on four of
The home key, which is very very cool. They even went to G major
When the key is a flat major
how!?!?!
Yeah, the overall song just really good
though the melody the ya da da da dee there are moments where it feels like the
(Volcamody?) bends is the rhythm and it's just done SO tastefully and it's just SO nice. ISaac: I don't know
I think it's like maybe it's like the way I
Listen to pop music before but every time there is like constant like if it's just like na na, na, na, na na for me. It's like, okay
I can't do it. I'm sorry Kevin: Really!?!??!
Isaac: It's just like oh there's a lot of interesting parts like definitely in the beginning
Where you have a I think it was a, A major triad or was it A minor?
I don't remember it was a triad that was just like it just changed inversions and it was like wow, that was cool and
there is the use of model there was model mixture chords like in
ballroom chords from other modes. I thought that was pretty interesting. It was relaxing. There wasn't something I was like great
Fantastic Kevin: Oh interesting Isaac: I like the delays though. The delays are very interesting. Kevin: I think this is the total opposite of relaxing
Kevin: I think this is very hype. I think this this is very very like go out and seize the day
Sort of song. It's very upbeat for me
It felt like the modal mixtures were the resolutions like it felt like everything
Let's say within a four bar phrase is aiming for that last
Unit of um modal mixture while all the other chords were, you know home, home chords like tonic and predominant
But then you get that taste of the model mixture, the first time and then you come to expect it after a while
It feels like that model mixture IS the resolution which I've never heard!!! It's so cool!! Henry: I though it was cool
I mean, I think as far as departures go from their usual
Vibe that was very successful
Because I feel like we've seen some departures that were like not
Successful, they took a chance in an area that they didn't know how to do well and so I feel like this, you know
maybe there were a couple places where I thought they made some specific musical choices that weren't exactly the vibe but like
Definitely wasn't like a catastrophic failure. I don't know they took a chance on something and
Captured a totally new vibe and I dig it. That was good
Elizabeth: It was yeah, I felt like there was a lot that happened at the very beginning
so it was really hard to sort of get a sense and I think they definitely
settled into the style they wanted to do but I
I definitely didn't like the intro but once the rhythm sort of started up and you got the sense of the sort of
off-kilter beat yeah, it was a fun jam
