Carol Vorderman jokes that old Countdown set 'used to be c**p'

The brunette bombshell was the mathematical whizz on Countdown from 1982-2008.

Carol gained a huge cult following during her time on the show, which she headed up with the late Richard Whiteley.

Before being replaced by Rachel Riley and Nick Hewer in recent years, Carol revealed set-life wasn't quite as glamorous as one may think.

In her new book called It All Counts, Carol has shared all of the juicy gossip on one of the nation's favourite quiz shows.

The 57-year-old revealed that due small production budgets, her and Richard had to deal with the most basic of materials.

She said: "Because no-one ever thought that Countdown would carry on for more than one or two series, [the old set] was a bit, well c**p." Carol continued: "The letters and numbers were cardboard cut-outs with magnetic strips on the back which stuck to other bits of magnetic strip on the letters board… "If you were lucky.".

On the legendary Countdown clock, Carol revealed that producers wanted to ensure that contestants had a full 60 seconds to formulate their answers, so ensured they had a timer which would countdown from one minute.

But as they played out the show's format in rehearsals, they realised that contestants wouldn't have enough time to complete all challenges within the 45-minute time slot.

Therefore, keen to stick to their budget, producers decided in a last-minute decision that they would force the old clock to run for 30 seconds, instead of replacing it with a new one.

The Pride of Britain host continued: "We had a clock with the ability to time 60 seconds, with 60 lights to watch, but when the production team realised they wouldn't be able to squeeze enough 60-second rounds into a half-hour show, they couldn't afford to make a new 30-second clock.

"So the original cheap 60-second clock had to remain - even though only half of it was ever used." But thankfully for producers, Carol always managed to succeed in bringing glamour to the programme! .

A range of royals have headed north over the last few weeks - including Prince William and Kate Middleton - to visit The Queen and Prince Philip at Balmoral

And whilst there the group have indulged in the family's long standing tradition of grouse hunting - with images surfacing of Prince George going to watch his father take down the birds for the very first time

Many have shared their outrage at the youngster being taken to view the blood sport

But others were left wondering why Prince Harry was notably absent from the shoot - something he has been participating in from a similarly young age alongside his father and brother

According to the Daily Express , the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were at Balmoral over the Bank Holiday weekend

So why didn't they take part in the shoot? Some are speculating that Harry's lack of participation could be down to Meghan Markle

At the end of 2017 the prince also backed out of his family's traditional Boxing Day hunt at Sandringham in Norfolk - something he's been doing since he was 12

A source close to the family told The Sun this was because he didn't want to upset Meghan

"Harry loves [hunting] and has always been out there on Boxing Day. But if it means breaking with long-standing royal traditions to avoid upsetting [Meghan], so be it

It's fair to say that there are some pretty stunned faces around here." Meghan has always been a vocal animal lover and animal rights activist, having previously adopted two rescue dogs , refusing to wear fur or leather and choosing to follow a vegan diet

The pair are also rumoured to have recently adopted a Labrador . Some people on Twitter are hopeful Meghan's love of animals may encourage other members of the family to abandon the cruel sport

Others have simply shared their disappointment at the family's long-standing tradition

One person posted: "I wish P rince Harry and Meghan every happiness, they're truly soul mates

Breaking down of a still life in watercolor - Duration: 8:41.

Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel

I'm Ursula and today i'll be painting with you an other version of my previous video

Last week i did paint a still life with bananas and lemons in a more academic way

And today i'm breaking things down in order to make something more interesting... i hope

I don't have a proper reference picture here, i'm working with the memory of my previous scene

and my last painting is also like a reference

But i'm deconstructing my painting for a more powerful and abstract image

I've made a sketch before painting with a very soft a black graphite pencil

so that the marks will be seen under the painting at the end

It's my choice and i like it, but you could definitely make a lighter sketch

On this sketch i've put some colors and then i diluted them with my spray bottle

And the excess of water has made those drips at the bottom

While it was still wet i've placed some shadows and idea of shapes

And then i let this first layer dry

Right now, i've started the second layer where i'll define shapes

The shapes are superimposed and mixed together without any order

i have really break down the scene and recomposed it in maybe an unexpected way

Some elements are superimposed in way that there wouldn't in the real life

My goal with this breaking down is to get an more expressive painting

And somehow to get the feeling of a day of summer where i would eat some bananas and lemons

This new painting is in direct opposition with my previous still life a bit stiff

which was an observation of what i could see

This new painting is all about feelings

It's my first time building an image in this style almost abstract

I didn't know where i would end up when i started

I just did know that my first painting was a bit boring without any character

And this time i just wanted to let go, have fun and just not overthinking it

I've decided to keep the yellow color

This painting is about lemons and bananas so that good to have a credible landmark

But i've modified all the shadows with violet hues

a mix of Ultramarine blue and Permanent alizarine crimson

And i've also added this turquoise color which is a mix of Ultramarine blue and Viridian

This greenish hue add another contrast with the yellow but more subtle than with the violet

This limited palette with only four colors allows me to have consistent colors in my painting

And to reinforce this unity, i used the same color in different places

So that they could repeat and echo themselves

So the violet shadow is also use in the banana's tails

it's a touch of violet and darkness here

I also added the turquoise color from the background to the side of the banana

My bananas weren't very ripped so the extremities were quite green

And as there is some yellow beneath it, the turquoise is looking more green in this area

In the same way that i've tried to keep my colors simple

I've also try to use my brush in a simple way

I was trying to make as few marks as possible for each elements

i didn't want to polish the shapes and go over the same spot multiple times

It allows me to have more expressive marks, but also to think less of what i'm doing

I'm being spontaneous and in the present time

Let's talk about supplies, i've started with an Escoda Aquario nº18

And then a Raphaël 803 nº2

And for the details a Silver Brush Black Velvet 1/4"

For the colors i've used Ultramarine blue

Viridian

Winsor yellow deep

Permanent Alizarine crimson

And my paper is Arches cold pressed

To end my painting i've decided to add a little bit of texture

First i've used a tooth brush to make some splatter of yellow

And with a brush in a dagger shape i've traced some straight lines (or i try to)

And those lines are the final touch to the breaking down

When i look at this painting once finished it tells me a story

The lines are the cut in my fruits, the drips are coming from my lemon when i squeezed it...

It's a story about feelings in summer

I'm very happy with the result first because it is spontaneous

and i did have a lot of fun painting this

it was almost liberating after the stiff still life even if it was a bit loose

So this painting is really in the spontaneity and feelings
