Why Do People Join Cults? - Duration: 4:47.

[ ♪OUTRO ]

When you hear the word cult, you might think of a dark chamber with a bunch of robed people

chanting because of weird, sinister beliefs.

Or tragedies like the over 900 people who committed mass suicide in 1978 because they were instructed to by Reverend Jim Jones.

It's easy to wonder who would ever join a cult, and assume there's something wrong with those people.

But cults come in many forms, and are more common than you might think.

And most of the time, the people who join are just like you and me.

Defining cults is tricky, even for researchers.

They pretty much agree that cults involve extreme devotion to some idea, thing, or person.

But some researchers emphasize a religious element, calling them a New Religious Movement.

Others focus on manipulative persuasion tactics.

And some highlight destructive groups that seek to control and isolate people,

as opposed to groups that might share some cult-like qualities but aren't harmful or could even be beneficial.

The reality is, it's sometimes hard to give a clear-cut answer as to whether a group is a cult.

But psychologists are still trying to figure out who joins cults and why.

Most studies involve recruiting former cult members from all over the world to ask them what their experiences were like.

It's hard to interview current cult members or people before they join.

So, while researchers have learned many things from these people who left, there's still a lot we don't know.

But what we do know is a bit surprising.

For instance, in one study from 2007 at the Autonomous University of Madrid, researchers

interviewed 101 former cult members and found that they're just normal people.

Some said that they joined cults because they were dissatisfied with their life, or were

looking for self-development or spiritual growth, which are totally normal psychological phenomena.

Everyone usually wants to belong to a group of people that cares about them,

and might look for answers to big picture questions, work to improve themselves, or seek spiritual enlightenment.

Sometimes, people just find those things in cults.

And, even though all this research is far from conclusive, there might be factors that put us more at risk of joining one.

Who you're around could matter.

For instance, if your family or friends are already part of a cult, your chance of joining is greater.

Same with having a dysfunctional family that's not very supportive or even abusive.

But family can also be a source of protection if you do join.

Having a supportive family that isn't judgmental and critical can help you leave.

Some personal qualities might also matter, like being more spiritual or religious,

or being curious about other people's views.

People who are having a difficult time in their life, dealing with stress, or having

problems managing emotions or daily life pressures, are also at a greater risk.

All this makes it sound like everyone is at risk, which… we kind of are.

But also in that 2007 study, the former cult members rated manipulation as the most important factor in joining.

People usually thought they were joining a normal, healthy community, because of various persuasion techniques and lies.

This manipulation is often a long, gradual process, taking months or years to change your attitudes so that you'll commit.

The leaders are typically very charismatic and confident.

They do things to make you like them and their group, which is called ingratiation.

Sometimes they'll give small gifts or do favors.

Thanks to reciprocity, it makes us want to give something back.

Then, to get you to stick around, they use techniques like fear, humiliation, or shutting down any dissent or questions.

And they often isolate you, restricting your independence, like if and where you work, and whom you're allowed to talk to.

When everyone around you seems to believe in the group's mission, and any voices that

say otherwise are quickly shut down, it's hard to question what's going on.

And if your old life is gone and you have no job, friends, or family to return to, it's a lot harder to leave.

But it is possible.

Once out, people often deal with many mental health problems because of the trauma and

abuse they might have experienced, developing things like PTSD and other issues.

The good news is that research is being done to understand how to better help people leave

cults, return to regular society, and live a healthy life.

A lot of therapeutic techniques are involved, from focusing on basic mental health to unpacking

why they joined a cult in the first place and unlearning any harmful beliefs the cult gave them.

And the other good news is that psychologists do know a thing or two about how to resist persuasion.

For instance, there's forewarning: If you know that someone's going to try to convince

you to do something or buy something, you tend to evaluate them and their message more

negatively, so you're less persuaded.

But, according to a 2009 study by a researcher at Opole University in Poland, this doesn't

work equally well on all kinds of messages.

Forewarning helps us resist persuasion more if the cult is focusing on your personal life.

Because when we think about ourselves and our personal values, we're more protective.

But if the persuasion is focused on bigger philosophical things, like why the answer

to life, the universe, and everything could be 42, the warning doesn't have as much impact.

So it's normal to want to belong, figure out who you are, and hang out with cool people.

But not every group has your best interests in mind… so just be careful.

And there are plenty of awesome communities out there, too.

Movies Caught Reusing Footage From Other Movies - Duration: 4:53.

We all know Hollywood loves to recycle ideas.

In fact, while we often don't realize it, studios sometimes even reuse footage — from

old installments in the same franchise or from completely unrelated movies.

Let's take a look back at some of the most surprising examples of filmmakers recycling

parts from another movie.

Life and Spider-Man 3

The idea of using stock footage in multiple movies is nothing new, but we received an

unexpected reminder of that when someone discovered that a scene in a TV spot for the 2017 sci-fi

film Life is actually taken straight out of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3.

The scene in question appears about 34 minutes into Spider-Man 3, with people looking up

at Gwen Stacy hanging off the edge of a building, shortly before Spider-Man comes and rescues

her.

A slightly altered version of the scene appeared around the 26-second mark in a TV spot for

Life, though it didn't make it into the final cut.

It's just B-roll footage used for the commercial.

It's no coincidence that the footage came from Columbia Pictures, since they're the

studio that produced and distributed both Spider-Man 3 and Life.

Considering that Venom was one of the villains in Spider-Man 3, fans of the superhero franchise

have begun to speculate a possible connection between the two films.

What if the organism in Life is actually the Venom symbiote?

That's a twist worthy of M. Night Shyamalan.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Island

Recycling doesn't bother Michael Bay.

He's guilty of reusing several scenes from some of his older films, and often does it

so seamlessly that it's difficult to tell.

One of the more recent examples can be spotted in Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

The third Transformers movie features a car chase scene on a freeway, which includes a

portion of another car chase sequence Bay had previously filmed for his 2005 release

The Island.

Instead of having bounty hunters chasing the good guys, though, Bay replaced them with

Decepticons.

The inclusion of The Island's sequence may have been due to the studio wanting to limit

liability.

The Dark of the Moon set was particularly accident-prone.

The first major accident, due to a snapped steel cable, left an extra permanently brain

damaged and partially paralyzed.

A second accident occurred a month later, when the Camaro that portrays Bumblebee collided

with a police SUV, injuring both drivers.

At that point, someone may have gotten the bright idea to just use a car chase from another

movie.

Transformers and Pearl Harbor

Throwing $150 million into a summer blockbuster movie based on a toy line would have been

enough to put any studio on edge.

So it's understandable that when Michael Bay was filming the original Transformers, he

cut corners by reusing a piece of footage of an aircraft carrier from Pearl Harbor.

While making Harbor in 2000, Bay used the USS Lexington to represent the USS Hornet

as well as a Japanese carrier.

Instead of shooting another scene using one of the Navy's carriers for Transformers, Bay

just recycled his old footage.

Definitely cheaper than arranging a whole new shot.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and Apollo 13

When one movie uses footage from another, they're usually similar in some way.

But there's nothing even remotely alike between Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and

Apollo 13.

These two films ordinarily wouldn't find their titles uttered in the same sentence — were

it not for one particular scene.

In Austin Powers, Mini-Me escapes with Dr. Evil to his Moon Base at the end of the movie.

To capture him, Austin and Felicity hitch a ride on Apollo 11 along with one of NASA's

astronauts, and if the whole sequence seems out of place, that's because it is.

An eagle-eyed viewer noticed that it was taken right out of Apollo 13.

It was a sequence created by Academy Award-winning visual effects designer Robert Legato, who

received an Oscar nomination for his work.

Rogue One and A New Hope

In some cases, filmmakers are upfront about reusing old footage, as was the case with

Lucasfilm's first Star Wars anthology film.

In the original Star Wars, the Rebel Alliance destroyed the Death Star after obtaining the

space station's blueprints and discovering its fatal design flaw: an open exhaust port.

The reason for the vulnerable opening, as well as the way the Rebels obtained the Death

Star plans in the first place, became the basis for Rogue One.

Rogue One's story unfolds days before the events of A New Hope, and ends mere moments

before the original film begins.

To give the impression that the film is a prequel to Episode IV, director Gareth Edwards

worked with ILM to digitally recreate Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher's likenesses, but

they didn't stop there.

The filmmakers also brought back the original Gold and Red Leaders, played by Angus MacInnes

and Drewe Henley, respectively.

Edwards was offered access to the Lucasfilm vault, so he found old and archived footage

from A New Hope for the duo.

MacInnes even recorded new dialogue specifically for Rogue One.

Still, it was a gamble.

Edwards was skeptical about using the old footage at first, but when the two Rebel leaders

appeared on screen during Rogue One's premiere, the audience cheered.

TAKE IT EASY - BUILD A PLANTED TANK WITH OUR FRIEND PETER ROSCOE - Duration: 17:47.

Welcome to the beautiful world of Aquascaping, to the Green Aqua Gallery in Budapest, Hungary.

What are you doing there behind the aquarium?

𝄞 "You can't hold me down... You can't hold me down..."

...Check it out?!

There's nothing behind it.

I know I was just trying to get away from this video.

Peter Roscoe is here with us guys!

Because we thought that we really need to show you how an aquarium is made.

By someone who has some experience in the Aquascaping...

𝄞 "You still get misidentified..."

What's that?

That's my nerves!

Shaky hands?

Yeah... I have some experience.

All right.

Tomi, do you have some experience?

No.

I've never done this before.

Tomi has never done this before, but I think he's gonna help Peter get this aquarium

ready for you guys in the next 15 minutes. Go!

𝄞 "We're gonna make it, we're gonna make it...

𝄞 "I kept my soul no matter how hard that they try to take it."

- It's actually f*cked. - OK, buddy, alright! Jeez, does anything in this car work?

Ahh, it's just got f*cked this morning.

𝄞 "You can fade it... Listen:"

𝄞 "You can't hold me down, you can't hold me down..."

There's just not enough room!

I thought you are good at driving!

Where's my boy, Viktor?

𝄞 "Listen! You can't hold me down! ..."

Well, you know... When I say I'm an amateur...

I really am. I've done 3 tanks, and I'm coming up and do my 4th tank.

You can find scissors in there.

OK.

That's how amateur I am I don't even know how to use scissors.

But...

I'm... My father has always had tanks and he ended up getting someone to do them for me, and...

Tomi's like become a friend.

I mean I don't really like the guy, but he knows what he's doing.

When it comes to aquascaping... So...

He comes around and helps as much as he can.

Jesus, Tomi!

But that's it. So I've been pestering these guys how to actually make an aquarium properly.

And finally I get to do it.

Full bag?

No!

Half of it for the start. And then we're gonna...

There's how much an amateur I am.

- Keep going? - OK, yeah you can go with the full bag.

So I was right!

Who's the amateur here?

Put it in the middle and the back, not the front of the tank!

We have 15 minutes Tomi, we gotta be quick.

- Should be. - Want more towards the back.

Yep.

I'm just happy to serve you Tomi.

The front should be flat.

- Is that flat enough for you? - Yep. Like that.

We've actually prepared some hardscape before.

In the back area where we store all the hardscapes.

The wood and the stones.

I got flower for Viktor.

Where's Viktor?

Viktor!

We gonna go with Iron Wood today.

OK. Let's go.

Yeah, so we're building a tank with roots.

What?

Have you got any cable ties?

- So we can tie stuff together? - Yep.

Let's go crazy.

So this is the wood that will sink yeah?

It should sink from the start.

- Ready! - OK.

Let's go in there.

Here's what I made earlier.

Now I'm just sort-of guessing.

Something like that.

Should be fine for the start and then we can adjust later.

Peter, can you tell us where are you from?

Originally.

Because I know you live in Budapest, right?

Yeah I live in Budapest, but...

Yeah, I'm from the UK.

I grew up in Middlesbrough - North-East.

Around there. But my parents really didn't like me so I left as soon as I could.

Been here for 7 years?

My first aquarium was actually when I was maybe 5 or 6-years-old believe it or not.

It was a very basic aquarium of Goldfish.

That we won at a local fare.

And yeah, that's it.

But my father had spent thousands and thousands on aquariums. Saltwater tanks and stuff.

And every time we go on holiday we come back and it's in a complete revamp.

He's got too much money and I don't think he wants to leave me any in the will.

But yeah, I always fantasized about - I mean nothing on this level but, you know, it's just relaxing

to look at an aquarium.

Unless you come to my house and look at my aquarium, which is just depressing.

Can you show it to us? The picture?

I'll tell you what. If this video gets 50 likes - just 50 likes, I'll share the picture.

- How's that? - Easy enough.

That's fair enough no?

That's an easy task.

All right.

250 likes, there you go.

Viktor!

Came all the way from England and he's not even here.

Viktor!

So.

What's next?

Captain Tomi.

Next is - we can start planting.

And actually we should go from the back towards the front.

I have the plants for you right over there.

Have you seen Tomi's Black Magic?

No one knows what's inside there.

We actually got it from Jurijs.

A few weeks ago when he was here at the Grand Opening.

It's some gloves. If you don't want to get your hands dirty.

I think there was something else in that tub before that, wasn't there Tomi?

Yeah, there was.

We're not gonna use it today because we don't use any soil in the tank,

so this is basically most useful when you use some soil and that gets underneath your nails.

What do you mean? Are you guys gonna plant actually in the sand?

Nobody does that.

Yeah we do.

We've got some ADA Multi Bottoms.

So we're gonna have some fertilization for the roots.

In the sand itself.

See there's another reason I'm an amateur.

- I just plant it in the sand and hoped. - Let them die.

I think these grow quite tall.

This is gonna be pretty red.

- This is Rotala wallichii. - Rotala Vickky.

Wallichii.

So this is Rota Wall Licky?

Yep.

Which is a Danish STD.

OK, so another stem plant for the back which is... Yeah, that's gonna be orange-ish.

It's Rotala Vietnam Hra.

This looks like an STD as well.

- And then we have Tonina. - Tallina.

Which is gonna be full green.

So you should have a green-to-orange-to-red in the scape itself.

OK, so you want a left-to-right green-to-red.

Whichever way you like it.

Here's one thing I always struggled with.

OK.

Which is taking off this foam-bit.

- OK. - Because after weeks-and-weeks...

This one is going to be quite easy.

Let me grab this here for you so it doesn't fall in the tank.

After weeks-and-weeks I always find bits of sponge floating in my tank.

Along with loads of dead fish.

Now what's best here is just basically plopping the roots straight down.

Yep, you should actually take apart into 2 or 3 smaller bunches.

So you can spread it a bit more along the long-side of the tank.

You know if someone was watching this it would sound very sexual.

You gotta spread it and...

Jesus.

Black Magic, and...

𝄞 "You call me dirty and uneducated..."

Viktor!

Can't work with these amateurs.

Viktor!

𝄞 "This is not about you."

𝄞 "We're gonna make it..."

Should we put some of this fertilizer in?

Looks like rabbit-shit.

Yeah.

You should put this down to the glass.

A bit more inwards.

Yeah.

- Like that? - Yep.

Right down!

Low as you can.

OK.

Another one.

In about 10-15 cm. Yep. Right about there.

Am I right by saying the more fertilizer you use the better the plants will be?

For the longevity of it?

Well, mostly, yeah.

But actually if you use more fertilizer you're gonna have fertilizing for a longer time.

And how long does this last?

You should replace these every 3 or 4 months.

It's not a proper fertilizer, it's just...

- And you can just replace it by just... - Just putting another one in.

OK, so these don't stick there. They get released in the water.

OK, this will be it.

We actually put the root sticks in.

So now we can start planting.

I'd recommend you to grab a shorter tweezers.

Here's another tip for you.

Don't use your fingers.

- You tried it! - I've done that too much.

Again, it sounds really...

Innuendos, isn't it?

Use your fingers.

So I'm going roughly where I put the fertilizers in Tomi, is that right?

Yep, basically when you are planting in the background you just have to be aware of the sides of the tank.

Don't put it directly on the sides.

Leave at least 5 or 6 cm in the side so you can build it up.

And it will not be just a wall in the back.

Got you.

Around here?

Yep. Should be fine

And just put it down as much as you can.

- As much as I can... - Yep. Exactly.

It's gonna grow out to the light so it's not gonna be a problem.

Now what do we do now that we planted, I think we spray it?

I've seen that in your channel somewhere.

Do we spray it first or do we plant all the plants?

Actually, we should've sprayed it before.

You should get the soil wet...

You're teaching me bad habits.

Yeah. It doesn't really matter if you plant in sand...

But if we would use some soil it would definitely be the first thing to spray it so it gets moist

and it's much easier to plant in it.

So is this pumped?

No idea, try it.

Yeah, it works.

Thank you very much.

And how much should I...

- It should get all moist. - All moist. All moist, OK.

I'm not gonna make a comment.

So, let's move these over here.

So these ones are going to be the focal point in the middle.

Yeah, exactly.

Super.

And again, all the way down to the bottom.

As much as they go.

Perfect.

Pushing about perfect.

I think that's the first compliment you've ever given me.

No way.

Other than you like my shoes.

- Your shoes? - Yeah.

I did say that?

- No-no. - No way.

Viktor!

OK, so... Sorry...

We skipped a bit here.

We're on to the Danish STD.

The Rotala.

Rot Ala.

Yeah. Yep.

What's the second part?

Wallachilly.

Yeah, good enough.

Yeah.

And this is gonna go on the far right so we should have a nice...

Separate colors.

I can see Tomi's blood boiling at the way I'm doing this.

Nah, it should be fine.

Yep. Perfect.

And actually use the second...

Wait, what?

What's this?

That's the other way around?

There's a rookie mistake. I planted this one upside down.

Cause why not?

Just seeing if it would work.

Yeah, I was curious.

That's one of the good things about aquascaping is curiosity.

You know..

I'm always experimenting with my fishtank.

You know with fish...

Shrimp. Turtles.

Frogs.

And that's the same tank!

In the same tank, yeah.

Seriously. That's maybe why it never works, but...

I just can't trust Tomi 100%.

Yeah, and when the wife says that she wants turtles then you're gonna get some.

So what's the secret to a good aquarium?

If you're watching this video this far the secret probably is to completely do the opposite of what I'm doing so far.

But, to be honest I think - patience.

For me... I just want to get... I like plants and stuff, but I do like the fish moving around.

So for me it's getting the fish in as quickly as possible. Which means I tend to rush things.

So let's say if you want a really good aquarium, take a couple of weeks in time...

If you just want to gung-ho...

Just throw water in and fish and see who survives.

And come in and ask these guys - obviously - at Green Aqua.

They do help a lot.

My issue I have is I never listen.

It would all have been different if I came in and met Viktor first when I came here.

Cause my aquariums would probably be good.

Not that Tomi's got inability.

Just...

Look at him, you can't trust that.

You can't trust that.

Viktor!

So this one's called Easy.

No. The other words.

Microsorum...

It says easy on the card.

Tropica labels all the plants by Easy, Medium and Difficult - I think.

So how much light it needs, how much CO2 it needs ...

If you're starting out and you have an idea in mind on tank, budget and stuff.

Make sure you don't do it step-by-step because I started with a built-in filter...

Then I realized that was rubbish. Then I wanted crystal-clear water, so I needed more plants...

But then I needed more CO2...

So just find out: do you want crystal-clear water, plants and fish?

Find out how big it is, how many filters you need.

What lights you need, that's another thing.

And yeah, I got enough spares at home to open my own Green Aqua.

And you'll see me on YouTube competing with these guys in the next 6 weeks.

Tomi has identified his favorite hole.

Let's put that in there.

Don't tell my wife!

We need to edit that out, alright?

Now, another challenge.

The In-Vitro plants.

I'm always up for a challenge.

I actually got you some water.

Where you can rinse them.

Or actually at least try to...

Open...

Yeah?

Basically all the rest of the plants have small leaves.

So it's up to you where you want them...

What would you recommend for pleasing reasons, to mix all the plants in randomly?

As nature would intend, yeah?

Yeah, exactly.

That's modern art, right there.

500 likes... If you want me back in the video. For me to select fish.

And I'm only going to select fish that will upset Tomi.

OK?

So what name are we giving to this one Tomi?

Is this the one we're gonna let the audience decide?

Yep.

Everyone who has an idea... Just give us a comment for the name of this plant.

It's actually Staurogyne repens.

What's the name for it?

I'm gonna call it Viktor.

Viktor! OK!

Viktor!

Got flowers for Viktor.

There you go buddy.

- Here you go. - Thank you.

- Happy Birthday Viktor (not his birthday!)

Actually these plants are not so big.

They fit nicely next to my monitor.

Tomi likes it not so big.

Enjoy!

Thanks buddy, I love you!

Doesn't like you.

Alright! Peter is, I think, ready with the help of Tomi.

Thank you.

Hands...

Still the shaking...

Do you have glue?...

No-no-no, I wore gloves... Did you not watch the video (HELL, it's edited out, folks).

I mean I wouldn't want to touch Tomi's gloves.

It was a very good job, thank you so much.

We were wondering if you guys would like to buy this aquarium.

I mean... I don't know, we'll see.

If someone wants to buy the tank, then...

I guess drop a price below...

Start an auction? What? 1000 Forints?

All right, we can do that.

All right guys, so thank you Peter for being here with us.

If you like our channel you can subscribe to it. Now we have a subscribe button on the video.

Because apparently Viktor told us that he couldn't find it (on mobile) underneath the video.

That way, I think.

It is that...

And then there's the bell.

On the other side.

I never saw the bell.

- You should check it. - But never mind.

Never mind... Anyways... Thanks for being with here, with us.

Oh, what, what am I saying?

Put a comment below if you want him in the next video.

Cause I mean he's pretty amateur, right?

Finally we can get rid of him.

Alright, guys. Until next week, goodbye. Cheers.

𝄞 "We're gonna make it, we're gonna make it..."

𝄞 "I kept my soul no matter how hard that they tried to take it..."

talking about pencil grips. Pencil grips are a low-tech device that assist

students in holding a pen or pencil. Some students have a weaker hand strength and

pencil grips allow those students to write more easily than without the grips.

These pencil grips are inexpensive which is a large factor as to why they are so

appealing. They are also easily accessible and can be found at your

local office store supply supply store. They come in different shapes too. Some

are cylindrical and fit right onto the pencil or pen with no grooves and others

have grooves for students to rest their fingers in. These grooves serve as a

guide for students so that they learn to hold the pencil correctly. Another common

form of the pencil grip is the tripod grip. This grip provides three small

pockets for students to place their thumb pointer and middle finger into. The

center of these pockets is a hole that the pencil can slide through so that it

is in the center of the pockets. This particular grip is very helpful with

teaching students the proper hand shape to make in order to correctly hold a

pencil. Thanks for listening!

Ken Hanger, MD, FACC, Cardiology - MUSC Health - Duration: 1:57.

I've been practicing cardiology for 38 years.

I've been in private practice for most of that time.

I practiced in Charleston for 26 years

where I did general cardiology and also did

interventional cardiology, and put pacemakers in,

stents and valves.

So at this point, I'm coming to MUSC

to do non-interventional cardiology, general cardiology.

And the key thrust of what I'm doing really

is to take care of the patients I've been taking care of,

keep them going, and to prevent them from going to the hospital

anymore.

What I most like about what I do is just

being with the patients, the rapport we have.

And some of my patients I've been seeing for over 30 years,

so the relationship is very special.

In the past, I've been an expert in catheterization,

putting in stents, balloons, pacemakers, but also

in general cardiology with treatment

of blood pressure, cholesterol risk factors, coronary disease

or heart failure.

So at this point, we're specializing mainly

in heart failure, coronary disease, any rhythm problems

or valve problems.

Those are the very common problems we have,

and that's what I really see a lot of in my clinic.

Patients come to MUSC for one simple reason, that

is this center of expertise.

It's got the greatest experts around the state.

We have a full armamentarium of all the specialties

of cardiology.

So they provide not only just the general

cardiology and interventional cardiology,

but also there's research.

If you want to look at the cutting edge

and what's going to happen new in cardiology,

it's going to happen here at MUSC.

AT VIDEO - Duration: 1:09.

Hi, I'm Joe. I'm going to tell you about some assistive technology that I've used

for

Over the summer with some of the kids that I worked with

at summer camp.

It is a little chewy thing, I don't have one with me, but it's

Pictures are right there. So basically what it does is

For kids who have autism, which are which is the population that I work with over the summer, I

it prevented them from

over stimulation and it sort of

helped them focus on the task. So when we had like a

educational time we would give them their cheweys or whenever they needed it, so they could help focus on directions or their schoolwork and

It just helped behaviors (preventing them from happening) and help them promote becoming over stimmed so,

it's a pretty good piece of low-tech assistive technology that I found to be pretty helpful in

More than one scenario.

Thank you

Assistive Technology Talk-to-text - Duration: 2:21.

Hello, my name is Morgan and I'm going to be

showing you a cool piece of assistive technology.

One that I think is cool because I use it on a day-to-day basis is actually on most smartphones

which is talk-to-text. If you click on your keyboard, right now I'm in my Apple Notes

and if you click on your keyboard, there is this little microphone

and when you click on the microphone you can just talk and it will type out what you're saying.

If you want to put a period in it or something you can put a period in.

This would be good for kids to use in school if they

were unable to type their notes fast and their teacher allowed them to sit somewhere quietly

in the back and speak their notes. I will just demonstrate

quick what you can do.

Match notes chapter one period.

and it just types it all out there for you.

Then, another thing I think is cool with Apple notes here is that you can

change the font size,

you can do bullet points as well. You can underline.

With the talk-to-text, I know some devices cut you off real quick and you can only say

about a sentence but with Apple, you can say a good amount before it cuts you off.

Usually, it's pretty spot on but is not always perfect. Sometimes

I'll be doing it while driving and theirs a couple words that it misses.

For the most part, it is pretty fast.

I'll just demonstrate that.

I am in an assistive technology class and have a fun time learning about the new tools that can help my future

students and improve their education in my classroom.

I look forward to being able to help them day today in their studies period.

Now I could go much further but I just wanted to demonstrate

how out of all that, there were no mistakes I don't think.

I just wanted to show you how much you can really do with that.

Talk-to-text is a lot of fun, saves a lot of time for those students who aren't able to type fast.

They are just able to speak into their phone.
