Chelsea boss Antonio Conte bemused at seeing unfit Eden Hazard called up by Belgium

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte admits he is surprised to see Eden Hazard called up to the Belgium international set-up, as his injury-hit winger has been trying to build up fitness with the Under 23s.

Conte addressed the media on Friday ahead of his sides upcoming clash with Everton, with Hazard, Diego Costa and transfers the topic of conversation.

The only player not fully fit is Hazard. Today he is playing Under 23 against Everton. He is not fully fit. The other players are available. I see Eden every day, said Conte.

I knew only 30 minutes ago (of his Belgium call up). For sure I am a bit surprised about this decision.

I was a coach in the Italy national team and I respect the decision of their coach. Hazard is playing this afternoon with the Under 23s.

In this situation, its very important to give the right time to players to recover very well. If someone thinks to accelerate the process, it is not the right way.

It is a great mistake. We must pay great attention not to make a mistake.. The Italian boss was then asked once again about the ongoing saga with Diego Costa, who he has admitted is no longer in his plans.

Keeping his answer short and sharp, Conte replied: the same. No.. Conte also reiterated his desire to bring in new faces before the transfer window closes next week.

He added: I hope to have the whole team back and start to think about Hazard. We are going to play seven games in a month, I need to rotate players.

If someone is thinking I can use only 11 or 13 players, it is impossible. I have to rotate players. We must be ready to face this situation.

The challenge is for the club, the players and the fans. We think with us, not myself. We are trying to strengthen our squad. If we our in the transfer market, it means we need to improve our squad.

Turning his attention to the transfer market as it enters its final week, Conte remained keen to keep attention on the current squad at his disposal.

As I said last week, its important to continue to work with the players on the pitch and improve the team. For sure the club is trying to strengthen the team.

They are working very hard to do this. The situation is this and you have to continue to work. If we continue with these players, Im very happy..

New 2017 Suzuki Swift goes five doors only - Duration: 2:41.

New 2017 Suzuki Swift goes five doors only

Suzuki has shown its new Swift supermini for the first time in Japan, ahead of its European debut at the Geneva motor show. The two are essentially the same model, though with regional differences in engines, tune and homologation details.

The Japanese Swift goes on sale on 4 January 2017; we'll have to wait until the Geneva motor show to see the European Swift, with UK sales not expected until late summer. So what's new for 2017?.

The new 3840mm-long Swift ditches the three-door option, in line with modern manufacturing trends. It's five doors only, reflecting customer behaviour in recent years. .

Note how the rear door handles are hidden in the blacked-out C-pillar (above). Its a neat visual trick and retains the signature Swift glasshouse. Underpinning the newcomer is a fresh architecture dubbed Heartect.

Its wheelbase is 20mm longer than before and it's available with 10- and 1.2-litre Dualjet downsized turbo engines, a six-speed automatic transmission and the brand's Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki system to trim fuel consumption.

Naturally, there's a slew of gadgetry available on the new Swift. It features cameras and laser sensors to predict a collision, braking accordingly.

And the same sensors can control the headlamps and cruise control to maintain a set distance to the car in front (depending on trim level, obviously).

The Swift has been a success story for Suzuki, selling 5.3m units worldwide since launch in 2004. A year later, we named it our Car of the Year.

Lotus Exige Race 380: 998kg racer revealed for 2017 - Duration: 4:13.

Lotus Exige Race 380: 998kg racer revealed for 2017

When we drove the Lotus Exige Sport 380, the lighter, faster, angrier version of the Exige 350, we were smitten – it's arguably the most exciting road cars Lotus makes. Now there's an even faster – albeit non road-legal – version.

The entirely reasonably named Lotus Exige Race 380 is exactly as billed: an Exige Sport 380 with less weight, more downforce, no numberplates and a lot of racing kit fitted as standard.

What turns a Lotus Exige Sport 380 into an Exige Race 380?. The dry weight dips just under a tonne, at 998kg, compared to the 380's 1066kg.

This weight reduction is achieved via the deletion of the road car's headlights and airbags, the fitment of polycarbonate windows, a carbonfibre tailgate and carbonfibre air intake pods.

Downforce has increased to 240kg total at 170mph, with extra vents in the front bodywork and rear bumper reducing pressure around the wheels, and improving engine bay cooling. A generously sized rear wing, diffuser and front splitter help too.

The suspension now includes two-way adjustable Ohlins dampers and adjustable anti-roll bars front and rear, and the drivetrain has been upgraded too: a six-speed sequential gearbox from Xtrac, with carbon paddleshifters, takes the place of the road car's H-pattern manual 'box – and there's now a limited-slip differential rather than an open one.

And the usual safety stuff: integrated rollcage, HANS-compatible carbon racing seat, fire extinguisher and battery isolator. Under the carbon engine cover there's the same 3. 5-litre supercharged V6 as the road car, with its 375bhp and 302lb ft outputs unchanged.

How fast is the Lotus Exige Race 380?. Around the Hethel test track at Lotus HQ it's 1. 5sec quicker than its Lotus Exige Cup R predecessor.

The 0-60mph sprint is done and dusted 3. 2sec – the same time as a McLaren F1. Where can I race it?.

The Race 380, which is aimed at teams and individual privateers alike, has been created with the Lotus Cup series in mind (which is franchised into regional championships around the world) – but it's also eligible for various sports car and GT categories from club level upwards.

It's priced at £99,500+VAT and deliveries start in May 2017, in time for the 2017-2018 Lotus racing season.

Saved A Caterpillar and Crib is Done! - Duration: 14:43.

(cat meow... ♪♪♪)

[JI] Good morning!

It's the weekend and last night, Friday,

we had a lot of fun. We went to Brewfest.

Obviously I didn't drink,

but we went to... kind of like a public market

and they had a bunch of different food and beer vendors.

So you paid for tickets, went in, and then you could try as much as you wanted to.

So Jenna had a lot of fun.

We had some friends that came and walked and I just ate and all of that.

But today is really exciting because this is the first ASL Stew merch that we have,

which I will show you.

Ugh, cats... always in the way.

So, anyways... look!

I don't know how to vlog anymore, apparently.

We have a sticker and a shirt.

So I'm really excited about this.

We have merch now and we did it a little bit differently.

I'm not sure if it was a good idea or not,

but we bought the inventory.

So now we're trying to sell it.

I don't know if it was... I don't know...

I mean we actually paid money and we got the inventory.

So we'll see if it works. If it doesn't then we'll try something else I guess, another option.

So, I don't know.

But anyways, I will wake up Jenna soon.

It's only like 8:30am right now, and then after that...

ugh seriously?!

Seriously... anyways, I'll wake up Jenna soon

and then the two of us will go ahead and drop it off at the post office nearby.

I'm really excited. Right now I'm making a smoothie.

So three bananas, spinach, and...

vanilla protein powder.

Plus I'll probably put in some frozen pineapple

and maybe some berries inside and almond milk.

So that's it! Stir it up and drink away.

Oh, I wanted to say, I love the thrift store!

I know, I talk about it a lot,

but it's really exciting because recently,

we typically make coffee in the morning. I make it for Jenna, like this.

Use this (kettle).

So that means that I'll go ahead, put water in the kettle,

warm it up on the stove and what not and put it in the french press.

But recently, the kettle that we have is really old.

So I thought it'd be good to go ahead and get a new one, right.

So we went to Target and took a look around

and they were like $20 or $30.

I thought we'll just buy one on Amazon cause it's cheaper.

But then we just totally forget and recently

I went to the store to get some clothes

and they had an electric kettle there.

It was just sitting in a box with no price on it

so I thought well we'll just see how much it is, right.

This is what it looks like.

Nice size reference.

It's one liter.

So one liter max.

But I asked the guy and he said

"Oh I'll give it to you for $1.99".

I was like sure! I mean even if it doesn't work, like whatever, it's a $1.99.

So I brought it home and it is brand new!

It's never even been opened.

I think it's from Canada, but it works and it works perfectly!

You don't have to have a hot stove.

You know, you get it and then your stove is really hot afterwords

and I get really concerned about that.

So definitely go to the thrift store and see what they have.

Right now we have two things.

Going into the post office to send our first order.

Oh look a cool car!

Loook!

Cool car. Just wanted to let you know.

But anyways, we're going to go into the post office and send out our first order!

I'm really excited! Jenna's probably not going to go in

because she's still... not awake.

[JE] (mouths) I'm awake.

[JI] She's had a little bit of coffee but that was it.

I don't know if she's gonna come in with me or not, but she should.

A married couple going in.

Like sending their first child to college.

[JE] I didn't say I wasn't going to go in.

[JI] Oh, well... my bad. (chuckles)

[JE] Yeah, don't assume!

[JI] Well, I mean if you take a look behind me, you'll know I assume a lot.

But anyways, let's go into the post office!

So, yeah... I'm starting the gender prediction today.

So... these are a few of the tests that I'm doing

and yes, that is my urine in the cup. I'm sorry.

Okay, bye!

(♪♪♪)

[JI] So, right now we just found a caterpillar almost going into the road

and I didn't want it to get ran over.

So we decided we're going to keep it for now and put it in our tree.

(♪♪♪)

[JE] Want to make sure it's safe.

(♪♪♪)

[JI] Right now, we are just putting it in a home

and hopefully it has a wonderful life.

[JE] It's really dark so I think it's ready to become a pupae soon.

[JI] Oh, well we'll just have to wait and see if we find anything later.

[JE] It fell out of the tree and we thought it fell on the grass

but nope, it fell right on me.

So we gotta go put it back.

(♪♪♪)

Stay in there!

[JI] So explain what just happened.

[JE] What... oh this?

Well we just recently watched Orphan Black and we're catching up.

We just got done with the last season. So now we're binge watching it tonight.

We just watched the second episode and one of the characters died

and of course Jill just SOBBED

and I was like "oh crap!"

So I got her the tissue and gave her that.

[JI] Yeah, I shouldn't be watching sad shows when I'm pregnant cause then I just cry.

[JE] That's okay.

We are gonna go to Wegman's,

go grocery shopping. Get some dinner,

maybe some nice things to make her feel better.

[JI] So right now, finally, I kind of got this room clean.

So today I'm making the bed, setting that up,

and that's the big part.

Then I have to try and figure what to do with all the plastic tubs and stuff we have.

Probably need Jenna to help with that cause a lot of them are really heavy so...

(♪♪♪)

Really?

Anyways, right now the bed is done!

I'm not sure if we're gonna keep it this way or lay it out another way.

I don't know yet, but I'll probably move around the room and stuff.

Then we can decide about the bed, should be ready!

Woohoo, and maybe we can start sleep training Peanut in here.

(♪♪♪)

[JE] So we finally got it finished.

So I'm glad we finally got this done.

[JI] But...

[JE] What?

Oh, well we were putting it together and it seems

some of the instructions weren't 100% accurate.

They're a little bit off and then

there were some holes that weren't there.

Also, there were some wooden dowels that were suppose to help keep things more stable,

like the little wooden pieces that you put in, but they were too big.

So then things wouldn't go down properly.

You couldn't get them to screw on properly. They were too long.

So it looks like maybe.. I don't know,

something wasn't long enough or.. just things were off.

So we thought screw it because

I mean it has screws in there, literally,

so I think it's perfectly fine.

So I think for now, pretty much everything is done

except I think maybe a few things aren't perfect.

But, overall it's still set up just fine and it looks good.

[JI] Yeah we are starving and exhausted.

So we need to eat dinner now because... I'm tired.

It's done!

So now, we're eating dinner.

I just made quesadillas again, just because

I didn't feel like going and getting food from the grocery store,

but I did make this.

I got it free from Influenster.

So I'm suppose to do a review on it. So I'm going to try it!

Let's see if it's any good.

Mmm, it's actually pretty good!

Not bad for, you know instant rice.

But I probably wouldn't buy this one, this specific flavor

because I'm trying to eat more vegan now.

But this rice is actually really good,

so if they had a vegan flavor, then I would eat that.

So yeah.

Now it is time for a workout

because I'm trying to eat more vegan and be more healthy.

I know I'm half way through the pregnancy,

but still it's never too late to be healthy, right?

Falkor is going to work out with me.

(♪♪♪)

[JE] Good night!

[JI] So, end of the vlog and I just made some banana ice cream

with some blueberries and yeah that's about it.

Just gonna kind of chill out for the rest of the night

and I'm really excited we got the crib finished. Woo hoo!

So have a good day, night, morning, whatever

and we'll see you in the next video. Bye!

It's a beautiful day, isn't it?

Yes Baba, It is!

What is the book that you are carrying with you?

Oh! I have my favourite parts of all the Prophet Stories written in it!

My friends love these stories at school!

Masha Allah! That's wonderful!

You are such a good son!

Thanks Baba!

So do you remember the story that I told you yesterday?

Of course Baba, I remember

The Prophet's encounter with an angel,

and the way it changed his life!

Insha Allah,

I will tell you the remaining story of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

Now listen carefully

(---No dialogue--- )

Bismillah!

(----No dialogue, Background sound only---)

The Story of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

(----No dialogue---)

In the last episode

we saw how the Prophet had converted the people close to Him, into Islam

(----No dialogue---)

For three long years,

the Prophet labored quietly to deliver the message of God.

(----No audio---- )

Idol worship was deeply rooted among the people,

and the Prophet tried to convince as much as He could

(----No dialogue---)

After three years of struggle,

He was only able to secure thirty followers!

(----No dialogue---)

Even His companions had now started questioning His sanity!

(----No dialogue---)

By now His enemies had started plotting against the Prophet

The Prophet preached that everyone were equal in front of God,

and this challenged the authority of local priests!

(----No dialogue---)

One day, they gathered together and decided to suppress the movement of Prophet.

They decided that each family should take upon themselves

the task of stamping out the followers of Islam.

Each household started torturing its own members,

relatives and slaves who were following the Prophet.

The people were beaten, flogged and then thrown into the prison

The hill of Ramada and the place called Bata

had now become scenes of cruel torture.

Only the Prophet was left out,

because He had the protection of Abu Talib and Abu Bakr

(---No audio---)

Then the priests tried to tempt the Prophet into joining their religion.

For this, they sent Utba Ibn Rabi'a to meet the Prophet

"O son of my brother" said the messenger

"You are distinguished by your qualities.

Yet, you have denounced our Gods.

I am here to make a proposition to you"

"I am listening to you, O son of Walid" said the Prophet.

"If you are willing to acquire riches, honors, dignity,

then we are willing to offer you a fortune larger than what we have among ourselves.

We shall make you our chief,

and we will consult everything with you.

If you desire dominion,

then we shall make you our king" said Utba

When Utba had finished, the Prophet said

"Now listen to me of father of Walid"

(----No audio----)

"I'm listening" replied Utba

The Prophet recited the first thirteen verses of Surah Fussilat

(----No audio----)

He praised Allah (swt),

and explained about the glad tidings of paradise

to anyone who believed in the one true god.

(----No audio----)

The Prophet then reminded him about what had happened to the people of 'Ad and Thamud

When the Prophet had finished His recitation,

he said to Utba

"This is my reply to your proposition.

Now take what course you find the best"

(----No audio---)

When their plan to tempt the Prophet failed,

(----No audio---)

they approached His uncle- Abu Talib

The Prophet's uncle tried persuading the Prophet to stop preaching to the people

But the Prophet said

"O uncle!

I f they were to put the sun in my right hand,

and the moon in my left hand to stop me from preaching Islam,

I would never stop!"

The Prophet, overcome by the thought that His uncle was willing to desert Him,

turned to depart from His home.

But Abu Talib called out to the Prophet loudly.

He asked Him to come back.

When the Prophet came back,

Abu Talib told Him

"Say whatever you please.

By the Lord, I shall not desert you forever!

The Priests from different tribes started publicly prosecuting the supporters of the Prophet.

(----No dialogue----)

It was during this time that a Christian king named Al Najashi was ruling Abyssinia.

The prophet had heard about the righteousness,

tolerance and hospitality of this kind ruler.

When the persecution became unbearable for the people,

the Prophet advised them to emigrate to Abyssinia.

Some 15 families emigrated to this country, in small groups to avoid detection.

This is called the first Hijrah in the history of Islam.

This happened during the fifth year of the Prophet's mission.

(----No dialogue----)

The emigrants received a kind reception from the king and his people.

They were soon followed by many others,

who suffered at the hands of the evil Priests in Makkah.

The number of people who emigrated soon reached around 100.

When the priests heard about this, they were furious!

They decided not to leave the emigrants in peace.

They immediately sent two envoys to the King,

for bringing back all of them.

(----No dialogue---)

When the envoys met the King,

He summoned the poor fugitives

and asked them what they had to say

(---No audio---)

Ja'far the son of Abu Talib, and brother of Ali then spoke for the exiles

"O king!

We were plunged in the depth of barbarism,

we adored idols,

we disregarded everything,

and we had no law.

Then Allah raised a man among us, who was pure and honest.

He taught us to worship Allah(swt),

and forbade us from worshipping the idols.

He taught us to speak the truth,

and to be faithful.

We believe in Him, and we have accepted His teachings.

His followers were persecuted,

forcing us back into worship the idols again!

When we found no safety in among them,

we came to your kingdom trusting us to save us from them.

(----No audio---)

When the King heard his speech,

He asked the envoy to return to their land,

and not to interfere with the emigrants.

(----No dialogue----)

While His followers sought refuge in foreign lands,

the Prophet continued his preaching against strict opposition.

Some of them mocked at Him, and they asked for a sign.

Then the Prophet would say

"Allah(swt) has not sent me to work wonders,

He has sent me to preach to you"

(----No dialogue---)

But the Priests persistent didn't agree with Him.

They insisted that unless they saw sign,

they would not believe in His Lord.

The disbelievers used to ask

"Why is He not showing any miracles like the previous Prophets?"

"Because miracles had proved inadequate to convince" answered the prophet.

"Noah was sent with signs,

then what happened?

Where was the lost tribe of Thamud?

They refused to believe in Prophet Salih,

unless they showed a sign.

Then the Prophet caused the rocks to break and brought forth a living camel.

He did what they asked for.

Then what happened?

In anger,

the people cut the camel's feet and again dared the Prophet to fulfill his threat of judgement.

Eventually they all lay dead in their beds the next morning.

(---No dialogue---)

There are some seventeen places in Quran,

in which the Prophet is challenged to show a sign.

But He gave all of them the same answer

(---No audio---)

After sometime, the priests approached Abu Talib again,

and asked him to abandon his nephew.

But the honorable man declared his intention to protect the Prophet against any harm.

(----No dialogue----)

Masha Allah,

That was such an amazing story!

I'm glad you liked it Amir!

(----No dialogue---)

What happened to the Prophet?

Did the priests harm Him?

(----No dialogue---)

(----Baba laughing----)

I will tell you about that tomorrow Amir!

(----No dialogue---)

I am so excited Baba!

(----No dialogue---)

I'm sure you are.

So are you ready for the questions?

Yes Baba! I am!

Alright.

Now tell me how many followers did the Prophet gain after three years of preaching?

Hmm..The Prophet gained only about thirty followers!

(---No dialogue---)

That's correct Amir!

How did the Priests of other tribe try to tempt the Prophet?

They first offered to give Prophet loads of wealth.

When the Prophet refused,

they then offered to appoint Him as their leader

And what did the Prophet do?

The Prophet then recited the first thirteen verses of Surah

(---No dialogue---)

Masha Allah,

that was the right answer Amir.

What did they do next?

They then approached Abu Talib,

the Prophet's uncle, and asked Him to stop his nephew.

And what did Abu Talib do?

He approached the Prophet and requested Him to stop the preaching.

But the Prophet refused His uncle as well

That's wonderful!

Can you tell me what happened next?

The disbelievers then started persecuting the supporters of Prophet.

That's correct again.

Now tell me the name of the Christian King who ruled Abyssinia?

Hmm..His name was Al Najashi, and He was a wise ruler

Masha Allah!

That was correct again!

That's all for today son

I will tell you the remaining story tomorrow.

Come, lets go back home

Yes Baba!

Netflix's Death Note review: Notebook Brings A Killer Demon and Let the Owner Kill Anyone They Wish - Duration: 6:25.

Death Note review: live-action adaptation strips away everything that made the original

version work.

Netflix's Death Note can be summed up by the film's first murder, which takes place

hardly 10 minutes in.

Light Turner (Nat Wolff), newly in possession of a book that lets its owner kill anyone

whose name and face they know, picks a target.

He writes the name down, and the victim dies by decapitation moments later, through a twisted

series of circumstances.

This murder — rapid, weightless, and unnecessarily gory — is Death Note in a nutshell.

Death Note is an adaptation of the popular anime and manga franchise of the same name.

The film, like its source material, dictates that anyone with the magical notebook is granted

the power to mete out justice as they see fit.

After it literally falls from the sky, with no explanation ever offered, Light begins

using it to kill people he deems evil.

Then he invents Kira, a god of justice who claims credit for the killings.

Eventually, he attracts the attention of law enforcement, especially an eccentric detective

who just goes by "L" (Lakeith Stanfield).

Netflix's take on the cat-and-mouse game of murder is riddled with problems from start

to finish.

If the film's writers or director Adam Wingard envisioned Light as a likable character, the

on-screen version is a spectacular failure.

Light falls somewhere between an unhinged sadist and whiny teenager.

Given Wolff's portrayal, it's often hard to tell whether a given line is meant to be

comedic or serious.

Mostly, he speaks with a pained, constipated look that doesn't fit someone contemplating

the complexities of murder.

But his performance just builds on the fact that his motivations for using the "death

note" are never especially strong in the first place.

A few throwaway lines address that issue — his mother was murdered, so he has a vague desire

to kill "bad guys" — but these topics are never explored on any significant level.

That basic lack of motivation extends to nearly every character in the film, from Light's

father to his accomplice girlfriend, Mia (Margaret Qualley).

Mia has a large part to play in the story that her shallow character never learns.

Furthermore, her desire to help Light murder people is never explained — at best, she

seems like a bored teenager with unresolved anger issues.

Light and Mia make out and commit murder seconds apart, without an ounce of remorse or humanity.

Their love is central to the plot, and yet they fight and whine relentlessly throughout

the film, with no real romantic chemistry.

Death Note's characters tend to bleat out their innermost feelings in bursts of forced

exposition, but those feelings aren't always reflected in their actions.

There's a constant clash between their lives, and how they explain their lives.

And while they're all hollow adaptations, the film suffers the biggest loss through

its lead.

In the anime version of the story, Light is a charismatic, popular student who discovers

his dark side, and the strength of his villainy stems from his charm.

He schemes while hiding in plain sight.

He uses those closest to him to get what he wants.

His fall from grace belongs not just to him, but those who love him.

Wolff's version of the character, on the other hand, is simply a stock loner with a

reputation for acting out.

He's arrogant and annoying.

In a curious turn from the source material, Wolff's Light also seems eager to inflict

violent deaths upon strangers.

Instead of relying on the notebook's stock death, a simple heart attack, this version

of Light plans out detailed, grotesquely public endings for many of his victims: decapitations,

roof-jumping mass suicides, and so on.

The film revels in these moments, with Wingard showing bodies exploding on pavement every

chance he gets.

His unexplained brutality makes him a protagonist who's too simplistic and obvious to be interesting.

This gets to the core problem of Wingard's Death Note.

His vision of the worldwide remote-murder phenomenon is uninspired and disappointing.

In its original form, Death Note is compelling because it's a game of wits.

The death note is full of rules, and Light is constantly testing the bounds of his power

by exploring the limitations those rules place on him.

His defiance makes each evasion of the rules clever and interesting, and every gain by

L — who's trying to participate in a game where he can't see the field — all the

more impressive.

This conflict allows for a dynamic relationship between Light and L. There's a grudging

respect between them, and they recognize each other as worthy foes.

But the film never gives Light and L the opportunity to develop a similar rapport.

Lakeith Stanfield, so excellent in Atlanta and Jordan Peele's Get Out, is wasted in

the part.

He's hardly a real threat to Light, whose irritating nature does more damage than anything.

Their encounters are anticlimactic affairs, free of real tension.

And Wolff's version of Light is neither clever nor gifted in any obvious way, making

every moment he escapes capture more puzzling than the last.

And as for Ryuk, the god of death voiced by Willem Dafoe?

Barely a presence of real importance.

What little time Dafoe is given as the apple-eating Shinigami is well-acted and feels authentic

to the character.

There's just not enough of his presence or his motivations to make him important to

the story, except as a special effect.

Wingard's film misunderstands what makes this series great on a fundamental level.

The plot moves at breakneck speed, at times making it feel like a recap of the original

story, rather than its own narrative.

It bastardizes the basic elements of the series to better serve its empty-calorie interpretation.

It's Death Note by way of Final Destination, a film more focused on cyberpunk-esque visuals

and crunchy synth than on any kind of substance.

Playing with a Broken Neck - The Remarkable Story of Bert Trautmann - Duration: 10:45.

Bert Trautmann was born October 22, 1923 in Bremen, Germany.

Blue-eyed and blond haired, Trautmann was the product of a tumultuous political climate

within the post-World War I country.

He grew up surrounded by Nazi-ideology, including blaming the Jews for the country's economic

problems and believing certain Germans, such as himself, were members of the "master

race."

So it's not surprising that he joined what would become the "Hitler Youth" when he

was ten years old.

He later said of this, "At that age you just want adventure.

It was just like the boy scouts.

It was fun – sport, sport, sport.

The idea that we were Nazis at the time is nonsense.

The indoctrination came later."

And, indoctrinated he was.

Although you didn't know it, your mind was influenced by the Nazi propaganda.

You listened to the political speeches.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't impressed.

People have an affinity towards their own and the Nazi's were telling us that German

people were suffering apparent atrocities in Poland or wherever.

We didn't realise the power of propaganda…

Hitler seized his chance in a country in turmoil.

He said: 'If you vote for me I'll get you this and I'll do that'.

People had no idea that he was preparing himself for war and to occupy Europe.

They just wanted food and prospects for their families.

When the war broke, he eagerly volunteered for the Germany army.

Most of my friends did too, we didn't think why or for what.

Hitler had influenced the education system to such an extent that we didn't form opinions.

We were indoctrinated.

There was peer pressure to join the Hitler Youth and then the forces proper…

People say 'why?', but when you are a young boy war seems like an adventure.

Then, when you're involved in fighting it's very different, you see all the horrible things

that happen, the death, the bodies, the scariness.

You can't control yourself.

Your whole body is shaking and you're making a mess in your pants.

While he initially underwent training to become a radio operator, he proved less than adept

at the tasks involved and switched gears to become a paratrooper instead.

As such, Trautmann, only a month out of paratrooper training, joined other German soldiers in

invading Russia in June of 1941.

He later stated, "We just followed orders, we didn't know that Moscow was the ultimate

target and we seldom had face-to-face contact with the enemy.

You could hear the guns but you never saw people die."

However, that October marked the eighteen year old's first experience with the brutality

of Hitler's ideology, and the experience left a mark on him.

Trautmann and another soldier set out to investigate gunshots heard in a nearby forest when they

stumbled upon a mass execution conducted by the notorious Einsatzgruppen, also known as

the SS.

It was hard to take in.

There were trenches dug in the ground about three metres deep and fifty metres long, and

people were being herded into them and ordered to lie face down, men, women and children.

Einsatzgruppen officers stood above, legs astride, shouting; a firing squad was lined

up at the edge of the trenches, shooting into them.

For a while everything went quiet, then another group was ordered forward and the firing squad

shot another salvo into the trench…

After witnessing this, the pair very carefully crawled away from the site.

Had they been discovered by the SS, they would have wound up in the trench too.

After spending nearly three years on the Eastern front, including being captured by the Russians

and later escaping, Trautmann's regiment was moved west.

At this point, he was among about 100 soldiers left in his regiment which was 6,000 strong

when it entered Russia.

Then in March of 1945, he decided that he had enough.

Nearly everyone in his unit was dead anyway, so he deserted from the German army.

This was no small decision.

He stated later, "I realised that war wasn't good.

You couldn't desert though because the SS would pick you up if you strayed too far.

They would shoot you or send you to the front with the youngest soldiers."

Nevertheless, with no papers granting leave, he decided to risk it and head for his home

in Bremen, attempting to avoid soldiers from both sides of the fight.

"I wandered through fields until night fell.

I found myself close to a village.

It was unerringly quiet.

Something didn't quite seem right and I went into a farmhouse for shelter.

From nowhere, Americans jumped on me."

They soon made him turn around with his arms above his head.

"Then I heard their guns click.

They were about to shoot me."

But they didn't.

"I've no idea why, but the officer just told me to clear off.

So I did.

I ran and ran, over hedges and through fields…I ran straight into six camouflaged British

soldiers.

They were less forgiving."

The young soldier who had been awarded five medals, one of which was the Iron Cross (and

all of which he would later toss in the garbage), for his acts during the fighting was shipped

to England to the POW camp at Kempton racecourse, and then transferred to Camp 180 in Northwich,

Cheshire.

However, a problem arose in the camp, not so much from the POW's towards their captors,

or vice-versa, but rather between the Germans.

Many of the captured POWs were ardent anti-Nazis, while others were Nazi to the core, and then

there were those in-between.

Needless to say, these groups didn't get along well and things came to blows regularly.

Thus, the British had to divide them up, separating them based on political opinion.

The groups were, Group A: anti-Nazis; Groups B: those who were more or less politically

neutral; and Group C: those who were thoroughly indoctrinated with Nazi ideologies.

Having been raised on Nazi propaganda, despite being somewhat disillusioned at this point,

Trautmann still held to these ideologies and was placed in Group C. He later stated, "When

people ask me about life, I say my education began when I got to England.

I learnt about humanity, tolerance and forgiveness."

His reeducation began by being forced to watch a film about the Holocaust and learning of

the concentration camps.

"My first thought was: 'How can my countrymen do things like that?'"

He was then made to work as a driver for a Jewish officer, Sergeant Hermann Bloch, to

which he, "quickly came to see Bloch, and every other Jew, as human beings.

At first I sometimes lost my temper with him, but, in time, I talked to him as if he was

just another English soldier.

I liked him."

At the same time he was learning to let go of Nazi ideology, he also played soccer in

his free time, a hobby he had since childhood where he'd once been given a certificate

of athletic excellence signed by the president himself.

The twenty-two year old quickly became a star on the field at the camp.

He played as a centre-half until his teammates convinced him to switch to goalkeeper after

he suffered an injury.

After being released from the POW camp in 1948, Trautmann decided against returning

to Germany, instead remaining in Great Britain, working for the government disposing bombs.

He also continued to play goalkeeper on the semi-professional St. Helens Town team.

Word quickly spread of his talent, and the professional soccer team of Manchester City

Football Club offered him a position in 1949.

But having a former highly decorated German soldier on the team didn't sit well with

the public so soon after the war, particularly among the Jewish populace.

A crowd of more than 20,000 people protested outside of the stadium and letters arrived

that derided the team for signing a former member of the Luftwaffe.

However, Manchester's Communal Rabbi, Dr. Alexander Altman, wrote a letter which was

published in the Manchester Evening Chronicle arguing against such blanket hate against

the country's former enemies.

He stated, "Despite the terrible cruelties we suffered at the hands of the Germans, we

would not try to punish an individual German, who is unconnected with these crimes, out

of hatred.

If this footballer is a decent fellow, I would say there is no harm in it.

Each case must be judged on its own merits…"

As Trautmann's conduct at the time was exemplary, he eventually won over the fans.

"Thanks to Altmann, after a month it was all forgotten…

Later, I went into the Jewish community and tried to explain things.

I tried to give them an understanding of the situation for people in Germany in the 1930s

and their bad circumstances…"

Of course, it helped that he was exceptional at his position.

For instance, in his first match in London, he was initially booed and called all manner

of names by the crowd.

However, after making several truly outstanding saves during the match, at the end of the

game he received a standing ovation, even from the opposing team who applauded him along

with the crowd as he walked off the pitch.

He went on to play in over 500 games for the organization over the next fifteen years and

is generally considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the sport, and

the first of that position to ever win the FWA Footballer of the Year Award, which he

accomplished in 1956- the same year perhaps the most well-remembered event of his career

took place.

The incident in question took place on May 5, 1956, during the FA Cup Final between Manchester

City and Birmingham City.

In the second half of the game, the score stood 3-1 Manchester City.

Trautmann was guarding the goal when an opposing player, Peter Murphy, attempted to score.

Trautmann dove for the ball and ended up with Murphy's knee connecting behind his ear.

The immediate result was simply that he saw stars and experienced significant pain in

his head and neck.

But due to a rule at the time that did not allow players to be substituted, he continued

to play the last sixteen minutes of the game "in a kind of fog."

Despite this "fog," he managed to make several critical saves in the last minutes

of the match, saving the game for Manchester City.

During the medal ceremony after the game, Prince Philip noted to Trautmann that his

neck looked crooked, but Trautmann gave little thought to the matter and even attended the

banquet after, despite the pain in his neck and that he couldn't turn his head.

The next day, he did go to see a physician, who told him it was nothing to worry about,

and just a crick in his neck that would resolve itself in time.

But the pain continued and was so severe that three days later he decided to get a second

opinion.

That's when an X-ray revealed that he had five dislocated vertebrae, one of which had

completely cracked in two.

The only reason he had avoided being paralyzed and possibly killed after the initial kick

and as he dove around later in the game was that one of the other dislocated vertebrae

had wedged itself tightly against the broken one, preventing the two broken pieces from

moving.

Trautmann continued to play after healing from the injury, finally retiring as a player

in 1964.

Among other awards he received in his lifetime, the significant role he played in normalizing

British and German relations after World War II led to Queen Elizabeth II appointing him

an "Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire" in 2005.

He died eight years later at the age of 89 at his home

in Spain.
