The P-51 Mustang emerged as a fighter for the British Royal Air Force.
In 1940, the Royal Air Force needs a new fighter, so North American returns this
design in 90 days to the British. It evolved into a long-range escort fighter
for the U.S. Army Air Forces used against Nazi Germany over Europe in World War II.
For the U.S. Army Air Forces, the Mustang flew bomber escort. They'd fly out
to meet the American bombers over Germany and protect them from the German
Luftwaffe. They are also used as fighter-bombers, so they'd be attacking
targets on the battlefield -- especially high-speed photo reconnaissance.
So instead of having to escort bombers, they would just take lots pictures of targets.
The Mustang was purpose built as a fighter.
You have a production process that facilitates the building of up to 14,000
Mustangs during the war. The classic V12 Merlin engine gives it the power. The big
paddle blade propellers make the airplane able to fly up to 400 miles per hour.
It was the use of external drop tanks to give it the fuel needed to fly the extra
range deep into Germany. You have high rate of fire coming from the 650
caliber machine guns, three in each wing, where all the lead of those bullets are
coming to one point at its target. You add to that, aggressive young men in their
twenties who are taught to go out and search for the German fighters and
destroy them, and you have this ultimate weapon for air superiority during World War II.
