Welcome to Norco College. My name is Dr. Reece. I am the President of Norco College.
We are so happy that you decided to come study with us here at Norco College.
We're looking foward to meeting you, we're looking forward to getting to know you,
Looking forward to studying with you, we are looking forward to helping you think about what your
future is gonna be like, we are looking foward to helping you think through how to be successful
as a student today.
We are just really happy that you joined us, I think back when I am talking to you, I think
back to when I started college and I remember it vividly. I remember feeling a whole range
of different emotions. I remember feeling of course very happy, excited, but at the same time I felt nervous,
anxious, and a little bit afraid.
A whole range of positive, and negative emotions all swirled up in one big ball.
I suspect many of you feel that way, and if you do I've got two suggestions for you.
OK, first you going to run into a bunch of new processes, and a bunch of new systems
as you are getting started here at Norco College.
You're going to have to go through this thing called assessment and you're going to go through an
orientation, you're going to need to meet with a counselor and they're gonna help you develop an Ed
Plan and then you might want to edit that Ed Plan on your own.
You are going to need to register for classes, you might have to get some financial aid,
and work on that, and when you do go to class you are going to go through the orientation,
and your professor is going to talk to you about what is expected in the class.
You got to figure out how to buy all the materials for the class.
Just a whole bunch of new things that you are going to run into
and you probably never run into any of those things.
First you should just realize those are normal. All the other students, even If the
people sitting next to you are faking like it seems normal, believe me everyone is feeling like they are
a little stressed out about these new systems.
So I want you to just be, diligent about it, be a little bit stubborn about getting through
these processes, and you will kinda find that you will get in a rhythm, and pretty soon
they will be familiar.
If you are confused at all, or not sure about how to manage any of these or mitigate
through all this please contact somebody!
Just ask for help! Ask anybody, ask another student, ask some of the staff, ask a faculty member, ask
a manager.
"Come knock on my door, come ask me!"
We all want to help you, have a successful experience at getting through and getting
started at the college.
Second I'd like you to engage, or adjoin the Norco College community.
You know whenever you go into a new community, whenever you enter a new community.
Whether it's moving from middle school to high school; or high school to college.
Whether its taking a new job, whether its moving to a new town.
Whenever, your joining a new community
People typically feel anxious. It's just a normal human feeling, part of the human experience
I remember when I came here to Norco College as the new President.
You know I'm a grown man right, my kids are grown, I'm in my fifties.
You know I've lived a long time.
You would think oh you're not going to feel nervous.
Yes, I felt very nervous about joining a new community.
I came here, I didn't know anybody, I didn't know where anything was, I wasn't sure
Would people like me? I was just thinking all of these crazy thoughts, and it's just
normal to feel that way.
So If you are here for the first time, and you are feeling like I don't know if I belong here.
I feel , I don't feel like I know anybody, I don't know where anything is, I feel displaced,
nobody seems like me.
These are all normal feelings, you should just really keep telling yourself that over, and
over again. Everybody feels that way when they join a new community.
Now here is what you do to respond to that. You need to actively join the community,
You need to reach out to other people. You need to join clubs.
Maybe it's multiple clubs, try this club...no. It doesn't work out, try this club.
Go to lots of different events. Study with other students from your class.
Make a point of reaching out and finding your people in this community, in the Norco College community.
Don't be tempted to join your friends from your past, you can still keep them
but you need to make your new friends at Norco College.
It's very critical, because there is going to be times when you're tired, when you're exhausted,
when you feel down, and these are the people that will come around you and lift you up,
and there is gonna be times when they feel that same way and then you'll be the person that
lifts them up.
Joining the Norco College community is something that I would really like to encourage you to do.
You picked a great college to attend Norco College, the people here are wonderful. I personally
hope you and I get to meet with each other.
But here is the biggest thing I hope for you, I hope your time here changes the trajectory
of your life.
