Chelsea left baffled by Costa's lawyer's comments after he threatened to hand in transfer request
CHELSEA have been left baffled by an outburst from the lawyer of outcast striker Diego Costa. Ricardo Cardoso said the Spain forward was treated unfairly by Blues boss Antonio Conte – and threatened to hand in a transfer request.
Costa is not wanted by Chelsea but cannot join Atletico Madrid until January.
Costa's relationship with Antonio Conte went downhill last season. Conte told the Standard on Friday he was mystified by Cardosos comments, adding that "this is in the past".
Chelsea spokesman Steve Atkins added: "The premise the lawyer has put forward is just wrong. Cardoso claimed the "unfair behaviour of Antonio Conte makes it impossible (for Costa) to return to the English club".
The lawyer repeated the claim that Conte had told Costa he was not wanted at Chelsea by text message in June.
Cardoso told Spanish publication EFE they would "use all legal mechanisms to hold Chelsea accountable for his behaviour, making it possible for Diego Costa to leave". He added that they would formally request a transfer.
Costa wants to return to Atletico, where he scored 43 goals in 94 La Liga games.
But Atleticos transfer ban spells more frustation for Costa. Costa is determined to force through £50m return to Atletico Madrid and has snubbed AC Milans advances.
However, a transfer ban means the Spanish club cannot make signings before January and they have yet to come near to Chelsea's £50m asking price.
Costa scored 20 goals as Chelsea win the Premier League title last season. Conte has repeatedly said Costa and his agent Jorge Mendes were told in January that his future lay away from west London.
"For me it is very simple," said the Italian. "The situation is the same as what I said in the past: the player, his agent and the club knew very well the future of the player.
"I don't understand why the lawyer is getting involved because the situation is very clear. Asked if Costa is distracting Conte from his pre-season work, the Chelsea manager added: "No, this is in the past.
Atkins added: "The decision on Diego was made back in January. "The player knew the decision, his agent knew the decision, clearly the lawyer has not been well informed.
"The lawyers argument that Antonio as a coach has forced the player out by text message in June is just nonsense.
