Greetings Gents! I'm going to show you right now how to take a brand new
straight razor from the factory take it right out of the package and make it
better than it comes from the factory. This is not a complicated process I've
done this several times it's simple and you need three things: You need a stone, a
strop, and a chromium oxide bar. That's all you need. I'll put a link underneath
the video to the items just click on where it says " show more" below the video and
you can pick them up if you're interested. This will take your razor
some people always say oh it's not shave ready, well this will take it from what
you get at the factory, to better than that a notch up. It's not going to be you
know some fantastic Hone Meister that worked on it for three hours and got it
you know to perfection this is going to make it so it's good enough for you to
shave with. Here's a brand new Böker King Cutter black razor let's open this up.
Remove it from the plastic set that off to the side and let's open this up the
coffin, or the case...
Instruction sheet, and a number tag, and here's the seal let's break the seal and
let's pop it out of the package. Okay there's a look at it the King Cutter
it's a 5/8 round point, carbon steel blade.
Made by Böker in Solingen Germany. Here's the front of the blade and here's the
back. So let's see how it does on chopping hairs off Midway... Ahhh-so so. I
can get a couple, a couple are plinking off. But let's improve upon that, So this
works well with a brand new razor and you just want to improve upon what
you're getting from the factory. This is a Naniwa 12,000 grit stone
You want to squirt it with water. First you want to make sure that stone is
completely flat which I've done already. You can check out my other video about
how to flatten your stones. I'll put a link to it under this video. Just make
sure that the stone is saturated with water and run your fingers back and
forth to make sure it's clean and has no debris on the surface. This is very
simple. We're just going to take the blade, lay it flat on the stone and apply
no pressure just the weight of the blade, and we're going to perform 12
round trips. A round trip is here and back. So roll it on the spine like I just
did like that you don't want to roll it on the sharp edge. One Two
Three Four Five Six Seven Eight Nine Ten
Eleven Twelve.
Then we'll wipe off the blade and now we'll go to our next step.
Here's a 3 inch Premiere strop with D-rings this is black leather it has two
sides: Smooth leather and fabric. So here's what the fabric looks like when
it's new, it's all nice and black. We're going to use this three inch Premier
stop it has handles and it has a black smooth leather side and also a black
fabric side. On this side I will put chromium oxide, I've already put some on
there but I'll show you how to do it. Just take your chromium oxide bar and
rub it back and forth across the strop. the fabric side, until you get a nice
green hue, just like that. And put that off to the side. Then you can take your
razor, open it up, and now you want to perform 25 round trips on this chromium
oxide. And when you, as opposed to when you're using a stone, when you're using a
strop you always lead with the spine. When you're with a stone you lead with
the tip. On the strop you'll lead with the spine. So we're going to do around 25
round trips. Just lay the blade flat again, and just the weight of the blade
and hold the strop taught. Stropping...
Okay that's about 25 round trips. Now you want to dry off your blade and remove the
chromium oxide from it. You'll see that you get some debris on the towel so just
remove that so it's nice and clean. Now you'll go to your smooth side of the
strop. Just make sure it's clean. Rub your palm across it like this. That will help
soften it up and impart some of the oil from your hand onto the leather to
condition it a little bit. Then take your razor now you want to perform 50 round
trips on the smooth leather.
Okay that's 50. Let's wipe this off again now. You can see there's a bit of the leather came
off on the towel make sure it's nice and clean. Okay let's see how it does
on the hanging hair test.
Oh much better! You can actually hear them being plinked off see that?
Now let's see how it shaves. You can see all the hair hanging off the bottom of
it, see that? Let's see how it shaves the arm - very nice look at all that hair look
at that. So as I said this will take your factory edge and make it even sharper
than what it is when it comes from the factory so you will get a better shave
from it. Again this is not a complicated process. Some people want to
make it complicated, but it doesn't have to be complicated, Alright so there's no
better way to test the razor than to shave with it right? and I don't mean
shaving with a goatee or shaving with half a beard. I'm talking about a nice
beard growth like this, and shaving the chin, the mustache area, everything and
seeing how well the razor performs. That's a true test of the razor so let's
see what it can do. I'm going to mix my lather up real quick and then I'll warm
my face up and we'll get right to the shave. This is fine American in the soap
bowl and this is a Chubby 2 brush. That's what I'll be using I'm going to
mix up some lather right in the soap bowl. It doesn't take very long at all just
starts already spilling over the side.
Great scent, this is the American blend shaving cream. Okay that's enough for me
to get started with right there. Let me set that down. Now warm up the beard. It's very
important to have your beard warm especially when you shave with a
straight razor it needs to be hydrated and
ready to be shaved off with the very sharp straight razor blade.
Let's apply the face cloth okay we'll set that down.
We'll just splash some water on.
See that my face is nice and red now, all that blood coming to the surface. Dry
your fingers that's very important. Okay now I've got my brush loaded up I'll
start applying.
A little figure eight to smooth out the bumps and the clumps.
Best part of the shave! Brushing on the lather, it feels great!
swipe the neck a little bit, and the lips, and clear the runways, so we can see our
side burns to make them even on both sides. Okay now I will dry my hands very
well! Always dry your fingers before picking up a sharp object, it's just
common sense. Okay here's the very same razor, it's the King Cutter there's a
look at it and I will start two fingers in the front two in the back just like
that. And I will start on the right side here stretching the skin and I'll start
at the sideburn and work my way down. Just
cutting that sideburn and then following it down with my fingers. You're getting
some good audible feedback! I can tell it sounds good!
Very nice! Nice and smooth! Okay the razors filled
up with shaving cream, we'll rinse that off now. I'll switch to my left hand for
the left side. Same way two fingers in front two in the back, stretching the
skin. cutting the sideburn. Actually the best way to cut the sideburn is don't
stretch. First cut it, and then you get a nice straight line, and then stretch. I
puff some air into my cheek so that it's inflated and easier to shave over the
flat surface.
Very nice! Nice and clean see that? Let's rinse that off. Now go back to the right
and clean up my chin area. For me this is a resistant area so I wind up going over
it a couple times with the blade because the whiskers and the beard there is
very tough! Okay now the left side of the chin. I section off my face left
side, right side, right, left, back and forth. Now left hand on the chin. And
notice how I flatten out my chin just by doing this?
Okay good. Now we'll go down the neckline.
Just a gentle touch you don't need to apply any pressure. Down the left side now.
lets rinse that. Okay now the mustache area. Just scooping it under the nose
like a C or U type motion. Okay now the left side.
And I just use the tip, don't use the middle, use the tip to get this area.
Okay nice and smooth already. If you feel that your smooth enough right after your
first pass feel around you're good to go. You can stop right there! But I'm going
to do one more. Just a little more lather. Just a slight coating of
leather on this pass the entire beard has been removed so you don't need as
much.
dry off the fingers again. Okay last time I worked from the top down, now I'm going
to work from the bottom up. I'll start with the grip like this holding it in a
Japanese style razor fashion, and just work my way up again. Just the light
touch. Work your way up. Rinse that. Now I'll switch to my left hand for the this
side, for the right side. Okay now I'll go across the grain on my cheeks puffing
out the cheek again.
And if you want you can stretch the skin here. Okay and across the left side
puffing the cheek again.
And then across the chin area.
And the other way
Just clean up a little bit around the middle here. And the cleft. You can put the tip
right in there and clean it out.
Let me
put a little more lather in the mustache area, and we'll go across there.
Now the left side.
Excellent! Let's rinse that off. Beautiful! Nice and clean right? Look at that. Just
because you ask sometimes, let's do a third pass, just for the fun of it!
we'll re- lather up again.
Dry the fingers again, I'll go against the grain on the neck it's very
smooth. Now you're getting no feedback, everything's been removed, but this will
give you a glass finish.
Now the right side left hand.
Now I'll hold it like this kind of bending it backwards and we'll go up the
right side. If your fingers are slippery you can take your alum block, just run it
under the water, and then rub your fingers on it and that will give you
much better grip on your on your skin.
This gets you super close!
Now the left side.
and I'll just clean this area
and I'll just do a quick cleanup around the nose and the mouth
However you want to hold the razor whatever is comfortable for you across
the face, right side, left side, whatever is good that's what you want to do.
And the mustache area.
Excellent! Now we'll perform a final rinse, cold water, and you can take that
alum block and glide it around Just a nice finish to the shave. You may get a
little bit of stinging, that's okay that's a good thing. And the alum is a
natural antiseptic it'll seal off any small nick's if you got any. Give you
some feedback on your shave, how you did. If you get a lot of stinging maybe you
went over the same area too many times.
Set that down and just let the alum soak in for about thirty seconds to a minute.
and then rinse that off with cold water and Pat the face dry. That's an excellent
shave! Nice and clean. Look at that! So here's a final look at the razor. My
method of sharpening or honing the razor right out of the package brand new. Just
to make it a little bit better than factory edge, so that you can get a nice
smooth shave. As you can see I did shave my cheeks, my chin, my mustache area, and I
had a heavy beard growth and if you want to get a true test of how a razor
performs you need to shave those resistant areas. The chin, the mustache
area, where the where the whiskers or the beard is heaviest, and that's what I
did just to show that it will remove it without a problem. Thank you very much
for watching I'm going to go put on some aftershave - I'll tell you what, oh, right
here what do we have, Thayer's original Aloe-vera formula astringent. Let's try this
looks good. Let's see if this was opened up yet. Nope, oh gotta break the seal
on it. These come sealed.
Just peel off that foil cap and then screw on the regular cap. Oh this one had
a broken lid. It arrived broken that's why it's in her, I decided to use it for a
video. Just squirt some of this into the palm, activate, slap it on! This is a good
natural aftershave. Aloe vera not a strong scent, not even a strong sting.
Just very refreshing. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel and click under the
video where it says "show more" and there will be links to all these items that I
used in the video and if you wish to, you can pick those up. I greatly appreciate
your support! So thank you very much for watching and visit ShaveNation.com for
