Nostalgia could possibly be one of the coolest things one person could experience and at
the same time it could be one of the worst things that one could experience.
A Bit contradictory but it does indeed make sense.
The feeling of Nostalgia sometimes is used against us to cause us to spend more money.
A Good example is the movie "Ready Player One".
It came out just yesterday, at the time of writing this script, and so far, it has an
80% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and over 77% from critics.
This movie is loved so much, just because of the nostalgia factor that it comes with.
Seeing characters you know from your childhood on the big screen in a different setting would
definitely attract most movie goers.
I'm personally looking forward to seeing this movie just because of the aforementioned
Nostalgia Factor.
A few things which add on to this effect in the movie Ready Player One Include "Star
Wars paraphernalia, King Kong, Harley Quinn & The Joker, Gundam, Chucky, Overwatch's
Tracer and Sreet Fighter's Chun-Li, Ryu and Blanka" All these attract the viewer
and get them hyped.
While the story of the movie plays a role in the audience watching the movie, it's
clear to see that this Nostalgia Factor plays a major role in how much the audience would
enjoy the movie.
And just the naming scheme for this video brings back many memories linked to gaming.
"Player One", "Ready".
Terms usually associated with video games.
Terms many can relate to and understand.
In a 2014 article from Today.com about this same topic the following is stated, "Nostalgia
is a feel-good emotion, and warm, fuzzy feelings tend to make people place less value on money.
People can satisfy their wants and needs in one of two ways: They either buy stuff, or
they rely on the people around them to provide it.
For marketers, feeling nostalgic leads consumers to part with more money or makes them less
price sensitive than otherwise.
Getting people to think nostalgically can entice them to spend money."
So while Ready Player One may be a great movie, this Nostalgia Factor pulls viewers in and
would cause them to want to spend more money.
And, that's not actually a bad thing.
It's a win-win for both sides.
The companies doing the marketing earn more revenue and the viewers leave happy.
Something Of Value is provided and the audience accepts it.
That's why many movies which play on your Nostalgia do so well.
If produced well of course.
This includes titles such as the 2014 reboot of Godzilla, the recent Spiderman-Homecoming
Movie.
They are both re-iterations of what we have seen before, but both movies were done so
well, that they made us feel refreshed though the visual and storyline content provided.
Nostalgia does indeed cause us to spend more, but at the end of the day, if done well, The
small fee paid to have an hour and a half of a fun experience is worth it.
I want to hear what you think of the nostalgia effect.
