In this channel, I will be talking about mind-blowing facts about the English Language.
So why is there a silent "k" in "know"?
We know that it's silent, because it's a bit difficult to pronounce "k" and "n" together.
But why is it there in the first place?
For comparison, let's look at German and Dutch, sister languages of English that belong to
the same West-Germanic language family.
In both German and Dutch, it's "kennen".
The "k" beginning is a shared phenomenon.
So where did it come from?
It came from the Proto-Indo-European language, the mother of most of the European languages.
In Proto-Indo-European, the root meaning to "know" was "gneh-".
This became the Old English "cnawan", with a voiceless counterpart of "g" sound at the
beginning, which is "c".
And "cnawan" became the word of question, "know".
But this is only half the story, because the Proto-Indo-European "gneh-" produced another
very familiar offspring, in which the beginning "g" is not lost phonetically.
It gave birth to the Old English "cunnan", which became the Modern English modal verb
"can".
Surprised?
But if you think about it, you see the connection.
If you "can" do something, it means you "know" how to do it.
In fact, unlike in English, the link between "know" and "can" is not blurred in German
and Dutch.
In German, they are "kennen" and "können".
In Dutch, they are "kennen" and "kunnen".
