This is the first edition of Heads Talking its a HeadCount discussion series.

We want anyone listening to comment, ask us questions, um, and we're just chatting with

Garrett!

Let's hear it.

What, um, work are you doing, or, do you have anything lined up to help bring music into

schools?

Yes, so, uh, one of the organizations that I work with is called Little Kids Rock, and

you can look them up littlekidsrock.org.

Little Kids Rock.

This is a great organization that, seeks to bring music programs into impoverished public

schools around our country that have lost their funding for music departments.

And, so I've done, um, and its great.

I'll go to a public school, and, where they are able to open up a program, and they bring

in, you know, a music teacher and, this is great because it becomes its not just like

a one time thing.

Like this is, they're setting up an independently funded music class and program taught by,

you know, a professional music teacher in these schools.

And its really wonderful.

And the thing about music and education, why is it so important?

Well, oh yeah, we need the kids to study history and math and English, but really, uh , statistically

it is a proven fact that children that study arts, visual and musical, within the classroom,

excel in their other studies as well.

And also have a higher percentage of graduating.

And, you know, they have something to be proud of and can discover an unknown talent, so

it's really sad to see, when the funding for, whenever they cut the funding for the education

system the first thing to go is always the arts and music.

So a lot of public schools here in New York and all across the country have lost their

music program.

So Little Kids Rock does a good thing to bring back some of those programs.

Somebody actually asked, earlier asked if you could sing a little "Superhero."

Feel free to sing, if you want to.

"Every once in a while I got to use these super powers.

Even though savin' the world's out of style.

It ain't my fault all this bad stuff is happening, but now its time I put my foot on down."

And then, um.

And then it goes: "Change is comin' over me and my muscles growin' so I freestyle my ass

across the USA and solve the economy, the homeless problem, save what's left of

the environment, create jobs for everybody be doing something they wanna be doin'.

If you can't do smack then you better do somethin' 'cause this is the time we sure can't do nothing."

And the other verse goes, uh: "Then I'll fly overseas and set all the slaves free from

prostitution, sweat shops, child labor.

Solve the myriad of problems in the Middle East, make a sun powered car so we don't have

to fight for oil fields.

And I'll take all of the troops back from wherever they roam, and whatever they're fighting

and whatever side they're on.

And I'll send them on the first plane home to their moms, and we can make coffee tables

out of all these bombs."

A reminder from our good friend JR from Ohio that the next election, the next presidential

election might be in four years, but the next election for most of us is in ten months,

in November.

And I know in New York we have primaries for our next mayor's race in I think September.

So its not just in four years, or three and a half years, its in three months, its in

seven months.

So, yeah.

I'm gonna actually, just really quick, I'm gonna pull up some dates right now.

On that.

Ok, so, November 6, 2018.

That's the date on which 33 Senate seats, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives,

and 14 governorships will be up for re-election.

So, that's November 6th, 2018.

So that's a little bit longer, but, put in on your calendar, research and be informed.

Help and encourage others to do the same thing.

Start planning and get ready for your voice to be heard.

And figure out now, because like we said, it does start on a local level.

That's where a lot of the change comes.

On a regional level.

So yeah.

You gotta get out there and make your voice heard.

Not just for the big bang every four years.

But all the smaller elections.

FBI not obligated to share rules for spying on journalists, judge rules

A federal judge has ruled that not only is it okay for the FBI to spy on journalists,

but that it can withhold information about its rules for snooping on reporters without

a warrant.

The Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) sued the Department of Justice in July 2015,

two years after the Associated Press reported that the DOJ had seized two months� worth

of phone records of at least seven journalists ? and possibly more than 100 ? in an attempt

to discover the source of a leak about a CIA operation that foiled a terror plot in Yemen.

As part of its probe, the DOJ investigated James Rosen, the chief Washington correspondent

for Fox News, as a possible �co-conspirator� in the leak of classified material.

After AP reported that the DOJ secretly pursued a warrant to monitor the communications of

the news wire�s staff, AP President Gary Pruitt claimed that anonymous sources retreated

into silence, afraid that they would become a target of a government leak investigation.

The backlash forced the DOJ to release guidelines meant to bar the government from issuing subpoenas

to journalists unless certain high standards were met.

However, those guidelines, published in July 2013, they did not prevent FBI agents from

using national security letters (NSLs), which only require the approval of the FBI�s general

counsel and the executive assistant director of the bureau�s National Security Branch,

to gain a journalist's phone and internet records.

Such NSLs come with a gag order barring the service provider from discussing the letters

approximately 97 percent of the time, according to Courthouse News.

The rules for the use of NSLs were governed by Classified Appendix G, which were neither

made public nor mentioned by the FBI in the list of documents it was withholding from

the FPF�s FOIA request.

They were revealed thanks to a leak to the Intercept in 2016.

The organization argued in court documents that keeping that information secret was chilling

the press and its sources.

�Guidelines to protect the press and bolster their right to report on issues of public

matters are not there,� FPF attorney Marcia Hofmann told US District Judge Haywood Gilliam

Jr. at a hearing last August.

�The government doesn�t want to disclose that because that�s embarrassing to them.�

Gilliam disagreed with that assessment in his ruling, however, noting that the FBI "described

with particularity that the withheld documents all contained non-public information about

the FBI's investigative techniques and procedures.

These pages not only identified NSLs as an investigative technique but also described

information such as the circumstances under which the techniques should be used, how to

analyze the information gathered through these techniques, and the current focus of the FBI's

investigations."

Just because the FBI didn�t include Appendix G in the list of documents in its FOIA response

did not mean that its search was insufficient.

�While the FBI�s search may not have been perfect, plaintiff was �entitled to a reasonable

search for records, not a perfect one,�� he wrote, quoting the 9th Circuit�s 2015

ruling in Hamdan v. DOJ.

The ruling means that reporters won�t have access to any updated guidelines on the use

of NSLs beyond what was revealed by the Intercept leaks, which FPF Executive Director Trevor

Timm described as �antithetical to a democracy that supposedly values a free press.�

"This is an extremely disappointing decision.

Whether it's the Obama administration or the Trump administration, the government should

not be able to keep its rules for spying on journalists without a court order secret,�

Timm said in a statement.

�It is antithetical to a democracy that supposedly values a free press.

We are evaluating our options and will announce whether we will appeal the case soon."

Under the 1966 Freedom of Information Act, individuals can request copies of federal

records for free or at a nominal cost.

The government is obligated to hand them over, unless the disclosure could harm national

security, violate personal privacy, or expose confidential decision-making � exemptions

that authorities often abuse, according to critics.

Why are we scared of snakes and spiders? - Duration: 4:21.

I have a severe fear of spider that definitely impacts my day to day life.

I usually ask my husband to kill them if there's one in the house.

If I'm alone and have to deal with spiders by myself there is often a lot of screaming

And even though my phobia has gotten better, I can still feel my heart race and my skin

start to sweat whenever I look at or even just think about spiders.

Where did this spider phobia come from?

Early behaviorists who developed theories of classical conditioning used to believe

that fears like my spider phobia were developed through experience.

That maybe I was bitten by a spider as a child and that's how I learned that fear- but,

I don't remember having that experience.

And this is backed up by research - not everyone who has a phobia remembers having a scary

encounter in their past.

In fact, people who live in places of the world where there are no snakes can still

develop snake phobias.

Also, we know that people also tend to develop phobias to very specific things- things that

would have dangerous to our ancestors.

Think about how people don't seem to develop phobias to modern things that are much more

dangerous- and much more likely to harm us than snakes- things like cars for instance.

So why does this happen?

Why do we develop phobias to some things, but not others?

In a previous video I talked about developing an aversion to cilantro after getting food

poisoning from a cilantro-covered chicken.

My brain incorrectly identified cilantro as the source of the food poisoning instead of

the chicken, but what I want to focus on is that I correctly linked my food poisoning

with something I ate.

I didn't develop an aversion to green leather seats, or forks, or having dinner at 8pm.

My body instinctively knew that when you get sick to your stomach it is because of something

you ate and not because of other things that happen to be around you.

We are predisposed to forming certain associations over others.

And this seems to be true of fear as well.

Somewhere along the way evolution shaped us into being biologically prepared to fear certain

objects or situations which posed a threat to our ancestors.

In other words, humans that instinctively avoided snakes and spiders or knew to fear

of them were the ones who were more likely to survive and reproduce.

To figure this out, researchers study children instead of adults, and that's because they've

had less time to form conscious associations that could lead to phobias.

For example, In one study, children ages three to five were shown two different puzzles.

In one they had a find a picture of a snake photo hidden among eight pictures of harmless

flowers, and in the other they had to find a flower picture hidden among eight pictures

of snakes.

Researchers found that the children- even the ones who had little to no experiences

with snakes- were faster to pick out the snake among the flowers as compared to the flowers

among the snakes.

When this was repeated with pictures of spiders, researchers found the same results.

The pictures of the snakes and spiders seemed to 'pop-out' from the other images in

a way that the flowers did not.

And this implies that we might have evolved a perceptual mechanism that allows us to identify

objects that were dangerous to us in the past.

Researcher Judy DeLoache tested even younger children- infants.

These kids were too little to give verbal answers or point to something on a screen,

so instead researchers used a looking paradigm.

These infants were shown two videos simultaneously and side-by-side- videos of snakes and videos

of other animals, like hippos.

While they were watching these clips, either a happy voice or a scared voice played from

speakers that were placed between the two video screens.

If the infant's didn't have any predisposition to fear snakes, we would expect them to look

at the both films equally while listening to the fear voice.

But, if these infants had an inborn predisposition to snakes, we would expect them to look longer

at the snake video when they heard the fearful voice.

And that's exactly what these researchers found.

This research helps us understand why people are likely be afraid of some things, but not

others.

But it doesn't explain all phobias, and it doesn't tell us anything about to treat

them.

For that, you will have to check out Ali's videos on social anxiety and treating his

Bee phobia.

Maybe one day I'll ask him to help me with my spider phobia.
