Regents Exam Algebra 1 August 2016 Problem number 32.

Solve the equation below for x in terms of A.

In this problem we essentially need to solve this equation for x, our final answer will

have constants and variable expressions in terms of A. We first need to distribute the

constant 4 into the binomial as follows.

Next we need to move all the terms that contains the variable x to one side of the equation

and everything else to the other side of the equation.

Doing that we obtain the following, from here we go ahead and factor out the variable x

from the terms in the left side of the equation.

This way we can isolate the variable x by its self, now it is just a matter of dividing

both sides of the equation by the factor that is left over, doing that we obtain the following.

The last step is to simplify the numerator and denominator by collecting like terms doing

that we obtain the quantity 13 plus 3A over A. We can also rewrite this expression by

distributing A to each of the terms in the numerator doing that we obtain an alternative

form of the answer in this case 13 over A plus 3.

Either expression is an acceptable answer.

So this is the final answer.
