Hello, I'm Rogan and welcome.
I was planning to make another video today, but I thought this was too important to wait.
If you don't know, recently YouTube introduced a new feature called "Restricted Mode."
And... In theory, it's supposed to be like a kind of family safety mode, like parental control, something like that.
In theory.
In practice... Not so good.
I decided I wanted to make a video about this because I know I reach a lot of people that this specific group of
people don't necessarily reach.
Which is the queer community.
The queer community has been hit very hard by this restricted mode.
Especially people who make videos specifically about the queer community.
I wouldn't be surprised if this video ended up becoming restricted too.
The reason why I say that is because this restricted mode is restricting a LOT of videos about this (queer stuff).
And perfectly innocent videos about this topic. Like...
Explaining terms, or just discussing experiences, coming outs, trans people just being trans people living their experiences.
I know that there are some people who have been hit particularly hard by this.
Kat Blaque, a trans woman YouTuber, makes a lot of very educational videos.
They're amazingly good videos. I don't always agree with her but that's okay.
The point is, a large number of her videos have been restricted.
Which is... I don't think that's okay, because some of those videos are important for young kids who are
just discovering who they are.
Rowan Ellis, another educational YouTuber, talks a lot about different queer topics and whatever.
They're good, I love all of her videos.
And.. A lot of, she said that over 40 of her videos have been taken off--put on restricted.
So... That made me curious to see what happened to mine because while I may have only two videos clearly about this topic--
I was curious to see what else became restricted.
I was a little surprised to find certain videos restricted.
I have almost 100 videos, almost.
And I have a total of 11 restricted videos. Not that many, compared to some YouTubers.
But those 11 are... Hmm.
Four out of those 11, I completely understand. I mention, or it has relation to alcohol.
I go to a brewery, hopping a bit, etc, so I understand that being restricted, that's fine.
Two of those, I can see why they would've been restricted. Because of the title suggesting a sensitive topic.
When it's really not.
So that's fine, put aside those six.
The five left are...the ones I really don't understand.
The first two are my queer videos - one explaining why I prefer that term, and the other being signs.
They're completely innocent. No sensitive topics or inappropriate for children, so...
That's a problem.
The next two are completely out there, I do not understand why.
Because one is way back, one of my very first videos I made.
And.. All I do is ramble about how tired I am, and thinking about starting up a YouTube channel.
I'm like, how is that inappropriate?
Then this one is about the human senses.
Literally, an educational video about nothing but the human senses. How is that inappropriate for children??
And this one [last one], I was honestly shocked to see this restricted.
Know what it was?
It was my video about Deaf YouTubers.
That video was literally nothing but a list of people who make videos, that also happen to be deaf.
I have no idea why that video would be restricted.
[on-screen text: Possibly because some I mentioned are queer and one is a sex-ed channel.]
There are plenty of other videos out there talking about this, and why it's a problem for the queer community, etc.
I will briefly sum that up here, and I will link some of those videos below.
The reason why this is a problem is because it restricts a lot of videos that would be really beneficial for kids.
Like teaching about what queer is, what it is to be trans, what it is to be not straight.
Education about... Life, health, being queer.
Restricted mode blocking these type of videos kind of suggests that queer people and being queer is "inappropriate."
Something that's for only adults. But no. There are trans kids. There are bi kids. There are queer kids!
There are kids that know from the age of 2, or 5 that they are queer. They know it.
And...you block these kids from access to educational videos? Where they could learn more about themselves?
Discover themselves? That's not okay.
YouTube has released an apology, but it was an pretty weak apology. I'll link it below if I can find it.
And then they did tweet something else that said, "Yes, we accept this, yes we f*cked up.
And we will try our best to fix it."
And... I really hope they do.
I really hope they reconsider this whole restricted mode thing.
There have been parental controls on YouTube forever. How is this any different?
This is blocking quite a few things it shouldn't be blocking.
Okay, rant over. I know this was a short video today [lol], but I will link plenty of other videos below.
If you're interested in seeing other peoples' opinions on this topic. And...
Ah yes, my next video. I know I said I would make an ASL Ponderings soon, but I have this [holds up spiral notebook].
Kind of an info dump about several things that I want to inform you about. That will be my next video.
I probably will film that today too, but I don't know. We'll see. The lighting is really great right now, so...
But yes! I hope to have an ASL Ponderings soon. Soon.
I guess that's all for today. Thanks for watching, see you next time.
