This project with ENCOUNT3RS began in the most unusual way.

I received something in the mail from my new friend Jean.

This man I'd met on the phone; bigger then life guy.

And I opened it up and it was this stack of stuff.

It was images and cut-outs from magazines and articles,

And there was a postcard that said "With love from Jean, let's talk!"

To find the right composer was very important.

Andrew Staniland stood out for me.

I really wanted the composer to have an impulse – a spark that would start something.

But not a definite concept that would maybe cage them in one direction.

What Jean really wanted to do was explore this idea of Phi

Which is the symbol of the circle with the line through it – the famous golden ratio.

I was thinking 'You've got to be kidding me?!"

I know Phi – I love Phi!

I've done so much reading on it.

In those images he sent me, all the stuff was there.

There's an image of a hurricane spiral, the same curve that's in a mollusk's shell.

It's in the sections of your fingers; from big to low.

It's amazing!

And he's trying to sell this to me as something you may want to try.

I was like you got to be kidding me – let's go!

To give composers and choreographers a chance to develop a work in this way

for the celebration of Canada's 150 is pretty much unprecedented.

I think if there's going to be a lasting impact or a legacy from this 150 project is

that we've given our creative artists a really good shot at making something great.

A few days ago Jeanne Shaheen, a Democratic Senator from New Hampshire, introduced a piece

of legislation that would give the Department of Justice �new authority� to investigate

potential violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act by the �Russian Times�.

Among other things, Shaheen said the legislation was necessary to determine whether �RT News

is coordinating with the Russian government to spread misinformation and undermine our

democratic process.� We won�t even bother to touch on the inherent hypocrisy of such

a statement, but here is the press release from Shaheen�s website:

Following intelligence reports that RT News operates as a propaganda outlet for the Russian

government, U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) has introduced legislation that gives the

Department of Justice new authority to investigate potential violations of the Foreign Agents

Registration Act by RT America.

�We have good reason to believe that RT News is coordinating with the Russian government

to spread misinformation and undermine our democratic process,� said Shaheen.

�The American public has a right to know if this is the case.

RT News has made public statements boasting that it can dodge our laws with shell corporations,

and it�s time for the Department of Justice to investigate.

My bill provides the authority needed to request documentation of RT News and find out who

they�re accountable to.�

The Director of National Intelligence�s recent report titled Assessing Russian Activities

and Intentions in Recent US Elections concluded that RT News officials have structured their

affiliate organizations to deliberately circumvent U.S. reporting and disclosure requirements

under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Senator Shaheen�s Foreign Agents Registration Modernization and Enforcement Act gives the

Department of Justice new authority to compel organizations like RT America to produce documentation

on funding sources and foreign connections.

Well, as it turns out, Russian officials have the power to launch meaningless witch hunts

in their country as well and have decided to demonstrate that power with the announcement

today that they�ll launch a similar investigation into all U.S. media currently operating in

Russia.

Per Reuters:

The Russian lower house of parliament, the State Duma, has approved a proposal to launch

an investigation into U.S. media organizations that operate in Russia, it said in a statement

posted on its web site late on Friday.

The investigation, which will be conducted by the Duma�s information policy, technologies

and communications committee, will check whether CNN, the Voice of America, Radio Liberty and

�other American media� are complying with Russian law.

Shaheen�s legislation, of course, drew wide criticism from Russian agencies including

the Russian Foreign Ministry whose spokesperson mocked the bill saying it should have included

a clause defining a list of books that should be collected for burning.

The statement said the Duma backed the move on Friday evening after Konstantin Zatulin,

an MP from the pro-Kremlin United Russia party, proposed an investigation to retaliate for

what he called a �repressive� U.S. move against Russian state-funded broadcaster RT.

He said he was referring to an initiative by U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who has introduced

a bill to empower the Justice Department to investigate possible violations of the Foreign

Agents Registration Act by RT.

Foreign media in Russia are overseen by the Russian Foreign Ministry, whose spokeswoman

Maria Zakharova this week singled out Shaheen�s demarche for criticism, quipping ironically

that the senator should have included a clause drawing up a list of books for burning.

The U.S. move also solicited the ire of Margarita Simonyan, RT�s editor-in-chief, who on Wednesday

told the daily Izvestia it had echoes of the activities of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy,

who oversaw a campaign to expose people he regarded as communists in the 1950s.

When I saw Christina Hoff Sommers from the American Enterprise Institute labeling the

gender wage gap a complete myth [video image] and calling anyone who believed it "bad

at math" and a liar, I thought we better do some further research…

In the most basic sense of the term, the gender pay gap is the difference between women's

and men's average weekly full-time equivalent earnings, expressed as a percentage of men's

earnings.

The current figure measured this way is 79.6%.

(U.S. Census Bureau 2016)

As a starting point, we thought we'd take a look at new graduates, with equal levels

of education, before influences of the industry or promotion could affect them, and when their

young age would mean they were less likely to have family responsibilities that may impact

their working hours.

Surprisingly, we still found a wage gap among this demographic.

In STEM areas, for example, women earn up to 77% less than their male counterparts one

year after graduation.

This was quite surprising data, as these new graduates in the same field really should

be on par with each other at this life stage, right?

Christina also argues that men hold jobs in higher paying industries and factors like

hours worked and education are at play.

Let's investigate.

In a study by the US Department of Education, when males and females increased work to 50

hours a week, the wage gap only decreased to 82%.

When women are still responsible for the majority of unpaid caring and domestic roles, those

extra hours at work make life pretty tough for not much of a difference in pay equality.

In terms of education, The National Centre for Education Statistics shows that significantly

more females obtain Bachelors, Masters and PhDs so they are certainly the more educated

gender on average.

But in terms of what type of studies, there are many anthropological issues that lead

young girls away from of study like STEM fields and into traditionally lower paying degrees.

So could women solve this by taking jobs in higher paying industries?

A recent EPI Report says 'nope': women who work in male-dominated occupations are

paid significantly less than similarly educated males in those occupations.

And what happens when more women take jobs in those higher paying male-dominated industries?

The pay goes down for everyone! (Miller 2016; Oldenziel 1999).

Researchers call this phenomenon 'devaluation', where employers inherently ascribe a lower

value to work done in occupations where females become a larger part of the working population,

and thus, pay them less.

So, do men

really want women around in their territory?

Much research suggests that hostile work environments drive out many women who try their hand at

male dominated careers.

For example in STEM fields, 63 percent of women have reported experiencing sexual harassment.

(Hewlett et al. 2008).

That's a lot.

It's no wonder so many of them leave those fields.

Christina's video blames the wage gap on women's own life choices: about the jobs

they take and so on.

Personally, I wouldn't call getting sexually harassed out of a job in STEM a career choice,

would you?

Another obvious life choice is whether or not to have children.

An experimental study of résumés submitted for job openings found bias against women

and mothers and a preference for male applicants (Steinpreis, Anders, and Ritzke 1999).

But science debunks this blue-collar bias.

Not only are women just as productive as men, women with children are even more productive

again, and women with two children are even more productive than women with only one child.

(Krapf, Ursprung, and Zimmerman 2014).

If all women were to choose to not create the next generation, then where would we be?

(Said off hand: I mean extinct… not promoted.)

In Christina's way of looking at the wage gap, she uses a 'fully adjusted model',

which is indeed one way to consider the wage gap.

This method attempts to adjust for variables such as men working longer hours in higher

paid occupations and getting promoted to senior roles.

By the time you have adjusted for everything one can think of to explain away the wage

gap (despite all the important societal factors that created those circumstances in the first

place, so can rightly be included, depending on your point of view), we are still left

with an unexplained wage gap of about 7%.

This may be put down to discrimination, the fact that men are more likely to negotiate

harder for higher salaries, the fact that women are more likely to be penalized for

negotiating for salary (Bowles, Babcock, and Lei 2006) or other complex anthropological

issues.

So, however you look at the math, there's a wage gap.

Be it the national average of 79.6%, the highly adjusted gap of 7%, the 73.8% for high earners,

77% for new grads, or one of the more industry-specific gaps, there seems to be inequality, and that's

the unfortunate truth.
