Interviews : EYEKON COMIC CON - Cyprus - Duration: 13:15.
We're here at the first ever EYEKON COMIC CON
in Cyprus. With me, the organisers
Manos Ganas & Tasos Anastasiades. Goodmorning to the both of you.
- Good morning (both)
Tell me, how difficult was it to bring
so many talented artists together
under one roof?
Not that easy of a task but when there's love
collaboration and understanding
we can do anything we want! - How did you
two get together and collaborated? - WIth Tasos, we know each other for years
When I first came to Cyprus he was one of 10 people I knew
and the one I went to directly
since we talked a lot over the internet.
There was a lot of effort, true, but communication between us is effortless
we both know the right people
It was good!
A lot of stress of course, being our first project nut it came about nicely!
Glad to see a lot of people is already coming
Being yourselves also artists who
participate in EYEKON COMIC CON
Melandros, with Kampos Publications
and Tasos as a comic creator. Tell me a bit about
your work and of course
your achievement in Cyprus
- I try to be as humble as possible
I published the first ever Cypriot comic book
Began with Plastic Comics it was called "Nasia In Space"
and little by little it progressed
by selling my work in various magazines and now I work
for a comic book called "THE TRAVELLER" with Neil Gibson from Tpub Publications
which comes out in a few months.
- You are also part of the European Univercity
- Yes I am a teaching assistant here at the European Univercity
and Vice President of the department of Arts
..too many responsibilities require equal amound of work!
- What about Kampos Publications?
We continue throughout
the year releasing work, not like everyone else
releasing 3-4 projects a year.
We're at out 12th project for this year
and we continue - like printing new T-shirts
we do anything we love
and we came to Cyprus to do (jokingly) the Pambos Publicaitons
- That's very interesting! (laughs)
Our next project will be with a Cypriot artist
changing the name to Pambou Publications
which sounds better to me
We want to better organise the local community
which already exists but it's spread
and unite everyone
being able to teach (more people)
having weekly sessions and be able to grow
and in 2 or 3 years for Cypriot artists to be able to go abroad for example
to Comicdom Comic Con and the AthensCon in Greece
and display their work
Have Greek artists come to us
Make connections, know each other and present something nicer.
- I wish to you at the next EYEKON COMIC CON next year, you have a whole room full of Kampos Publications
- We're throwing them out (laughing)
You don't understand how this will go..
We brought them together now but next time we're going to be full of Kampos &
Plastic Comics Publications artists and then we'll try to figure out who was the more successful one !
Up next, at this year's EYEKON COMIC CON
at the European University, is one of the artists attending the show, her name is Danae also known
by her work name "Da Ni"! Good morning! - Good morning!
- You studied sculpting from what I read and then went on to join the world of comics
with "TALES FROM THE STRIPS"
which is also an award winning comic book.
Then you started collaborating with 2000AD
and IDW.. my question is, have you ever imagined
this kind of success
- Hardly a success!
My goal was always being able to
work (and still have higher goals) with them.
I was referring on how much difficult it was for an artist such as yourself
to get "accepted" and work with these kind of successful companies
- It wasn't as difficult as you imagine. One thing brought another.
I was very lucky. In regards to 2000AD
they were the ones who found me.
..and then when you begin work
you "get found" more easily by others.
I know that used to go to comic cons
as a visitor in the beginning
now the roles have changed! People come to comic cons for you.
For you personally, who's the artist that will now make you
go to a comic con and meet him up close?
- I would definately go for Risso
I haven't met him yet
- What's Da Ni 's inspiration? - Risso! (laughs)
- Too many things, do!
I can be inspired by anything! For example fashion!
..and from various artists' work
Photographs also, not just comics.
Movies, TV Shows - everything!
- What are you up to now?
- What comic books Am I working on? I m working with 2000AD on some special issues coming this year.
Another artist from EYEKON COMIC CON, Michael Dialynas! Good morning!
- Good morning! - Michael has worked with 6 of the
biggest publishing companies in the world:
Dark Horse,
Marvel, Boom Studios,
IDW, IMAGE and DC Comics. Which one's your favorite?
Tough question! I consider
Boom Studios to be
my favorite because of the work we are doing for the last 5 years now
and now my 10th book is coming with them!
- We're talking about "THE WOODS" that has become
a successful comic book
that is probably going to be adapted for a TV Series. - Yes, we are in the procedure
and we're waiting for the green light.
It has been 2 years now since SyFy
was interested in it
and of course Universal.
And now we're waiting to get the final word on the pilot.
- Are you a fanboy? Will you go to a comic con
and meet a certain favorite artist?
If so, who?
- I'd say I would go for Guy Davis.
He's the artist behind
the art of Hellboy
But he no longer goes to comic cons that much
because of his work with Guillermo Del Toro
and his movies.
I have only talked with him via email so far.
- You were born in Crete, Greece. You began drawing
at an early age.
If your younger self was now in front of you
what would be your main advice?
I'd tell him to start dyeing his hair! (laughs) it will get grey fast!
- Michael thank you very much!
- Thank you!
Another artist at EYEKON COMIC CON,
this time it's Ilias Kyriazis! Good morning!
- Good morning!
- How is Cyprus so far? With the fan community and with new comic cons happening now?
- It's going great! This is not my first time here. I have been here also two times before
I always have a good time and it is a pleasure being here among
Cypriot fans and I noticed many people
interested in comics and the work we do!
- What were your inspirations growing up?
- What comic books I grew up with?
Mainly Asterix,
Mickey Mouse and
quickly turned to super hero comics.
X-MEN, Spider-man etc.
- What are you currently working on?
- I already completed work on
Dirk Gently and
G.I.Joe and I am currently
preparing for a new project which I am not allowed to say anything about it yet.
- Does the younger generation come up to you, bringing their artworks and asking for your advice?
- Best advice I have to offer them is patience and persistence.
If you continue to draw
you will eventually get better at it
and more people will notice you.
Now it's time to meet our next EYEKON COMIC CON artist attendee
Yiannis Rouboulias - known by his nickname Rubus.
How did that nickname come about?
It's just a variation of my surname.
But later on I learned about a different meaning of the word.
It means Raspberry
in Latin - I didn't know!
So when I google Rubus I see Raspberries!
You are the creator of the Dragon Phoenix
Is that a title you want your name to be linked to?
It's essentially
my first big work. My oldest offspring!
Close to my heart.
It's a world and characters that I created.
Already also been
adapted into a movie
and I love to see it grow!
How did the movie came to happen?
It was basically a project done between friends
through our love and craziness for what we do
Comic book artists have a certain craziness - you know how that is
So we started filming and because I like acting
I consider movies
and comic books to be sort of "cousins"
So we did the movie and I feel like
it taught me
as far as storytelling goes, a lot.
- Have you known from an early age that
this is what you were destined for? Being a comic book artist?
- Yes, since the age of 5!
As a kid what got you into comics? The character that excited you the most?
A specific design, lets say, that made you say this is who I want to become like.
As a child
my parents were the ones who used to bring me
my comics - those were different times.
We didn''t have video games back then.
So comics were their way of making me behave
But what played the most part during my childhood
was
a comic issue of "Conan the Barberian" that my dad gave me during our summer vacations
That I remember opening its pages
and being very stunned by what I saw.
So yes John Buscema was the artist who "shook" me into becoming
the artist I am today
- So that's how "Ponan - The Marmerian" came about?
- Yes that's a parody of Conan
which I love very much
This project started back when I was still a young student
I created this character to make my friends
laugh but officially
we published last year.
- What are you up to right now? Are you preparing something new?
- Now we're doing "The Brides of Dracula" with Avraam Kaoua
which I consider this to be one of the best work I have ever done
Although I already said Dragon Phoenix is my favorite
mostly because this was
a project a wanted to do for a long time with Avraam
who I consider to be very talented
writer one of the best I collaborated so far
- This is not your first time in Cyprus
you see now that the Cypriot geek culture
has evolved. What is your advice
to young people who look up to you considering following in your steps
- A lot of patience and persistence.
It's going to be lot of hard work
So don't give up if you fail.
This is what I say to my students
know from your mistakes
That's the only way to "go forward"
- Do young people come up to you with their artworks looking for your advice?
- Yes sure and
I am glad that they do.
I feel like I put a little something into building them
to be the best they can be
Maybe one day one will become a great comic artist
I will know that I helped just a little!

An Important Message from Executive Kittleman and Councilmember Weinstein - Duration: 3:06.
In just four years, Ellicott City will celebrate its 250th birthday.
We are here to assure you, we will be here to celebrate - to celebrate the last 250 years
and the next 250 years of a stronger, smarter and safer Ellicott City.
The Ellicott brothers picked this spot for its topography and waterways to harness them
to speed water through the town to power the mills.
Since its founding, Ellicott City has been prone to major flooding and endured 16 recorded
floods.
Meteorologists have said these flooding events are supposed to happen every 20, 100, or even
1,000 years.
Clearly, having these two devastating floods just 22 months apart has forever changed the
conversation.
But we ARE NOT going to abandon this town.
After the 2016 storm, we undertook an extensive master plan process for Ellicott City.
We had four significant flood mitigation projects underway.
During the next few days, we'll be sitting down talking to business owners, residents
and property owners, both one on one, and in small groups.
We want to hear from them first-hand about their thoughts for the town and plans for
the future.
These meetings will help shape a TRANSFORMATIVE vision for Ellicott City – a vision that
will make Ellicott City STRONGER, SMARTER, and most importantly, SAFER.
We will pursue every option available to secure funds for this new vision.
We are not waiting.
We are moving as quickly as possible to shift from emergency response to recovery.
Considerable activity has already taken place.
Much progress has been made to rebuild damaged infrastructure.
Some business owners and West End residents have told us they are as much as five weeks
ahead of where they were following the 2016 flood.
We have already started conversations with key stakeholders about what a transformed
Ellicott City might look like.
Ellicott City is known for its charm and its eclectic mix of shops and restaurants.
But it is defined by the inspiring and resilient spirit of its people.
On May 27th, we heard the comforting voices of our dispatchers who professionally handled
more than 1,100 emergency calls.
We witnessed acts of heroism by our first responders and by neighbors helping neighbors
because of those bonds of community.
Sadly, one of those heroes, Sgt.
Eddison Hermond, lost his life while trying to help.
We will never forget his bravey.
We are grieving together, but we are inspired by the outpouring of love and support from
near and far.
One card came from a four-year-old girl in Massachusetts.
It says "I hope you have a good day, and I hope the flood goes away quick."
For all the support, for the donations, and for the thoughts and prayers, we are eternally
grateful.
We want to thank Governor Hogan and the state agencies that have been here for the response
and the recovery.
We also want to thank Senators Cardin and Van Hollen, and Congressman Cummings, for
pledging their full support in the months ahead.
In 2016, we stood ECSTRONG.
Let us stand together again as ECSTRONGER, ECSMARTER and ECSAFER.

Dungeons & Dragons Factions - The Emerald Enclave - Duration: 5:12.
Hello everybody Jorphdan here the PH is silent.
Let's continue with our faction videos.
Today we're discussing the Emerald Enclave, which my Adventure League group has dubbed
the hippie commune.
The Emerald Enclave is a group of Druids and Rangers that aim to protect the balance between
nature and civilization.
They believe that the natural order must be respected and preserved.
Thus they are against people, monsters, or organizations that upset the natural balance.
Undead fall into this category and thus necromancers are considered enemies of the Emerald Enclave.
Nature is difficult, it's harsh, and it's savage.
The Enclave strives to help other survive it.
They will train and aid others to survive a harsh winter, or long treks through the
jungle.
They'll offer their support and knowledge in hunting to those people that deserve their
help.
One of their main goals is to help others survive the many perils of the wild.
This extends to civilization too.
The Emerald Enclave has been known to fight against encroaching Orc tribes that threaten
nearby villages.
One might think that being one with nature they are opposed to civilization, but they
are not.
Their goal is to preserve a balance between the two.
They also wished to keep elemental forces in check.
Keeping the powers of the elemental chaos from devouring Faerun.
All part of their plan to prevent the wilderness and civilization from wiping out one another.
The organization is spread across Faerun.
Founded in 374 DR on the island of Ilighon by a group of rangers and druids.
This particular island is one of two that make up the "Eyes of Silvanus" which lie
in the Sea of Fallen Stars.
The other being the island of Wavecrest.
There are reefs and also magic that protects the island, magic from the Emerald Enclave.
This protects the islands from pirates.
Geographically these islands are more central Faerun, away from the Sword Coast.
The Sea of Fallen Stars is also known as the inner sea and is the largest inland body of
water in Faerun.
Now the Emerald Enclave originally stayed on their island, preserving nature and doing
good.
After a while though they began to concern themselves with the preservation of nature
throughout all of Faerun.
To facilitate this they started smaller groups of the Emerald Enclave and spread them out across
Faerun.
They went to specific areas that the Enclave felt may become threatened, such as the High
Forest, Cormanthor, and Wealdath.
When I say smaller groups I do mean only a few people who were sent to keep an eye on
those particular areas.
Then the spellplague hit.
The druids did not know how to interact with this oddly changing world of spellscars and
blue fire.
The sea of fallen stars shrunk, it retreated into the underdark and the small island of
Ilighon was now part of the mainland Turmish.
Turmish is a nation of mercantile cities ruled by an organization known as the Assembly of
Stars.
The Emerald Enclave helped the Turmish and have taken credit for the rebirth of Turmishan
agriculture.
From the 4th edition Campaign Guide "As years became decades, their original mission
slowly perverted from one of respect for guardianship of nature to a vain struggle against forces
far beyond their control."
The Enclave attempted to aid the world by sending agents to the plaguelands.
To stop the spell scarred, and the blue fire ripping the world apart.
This had little effect on the spellplague as a whole, it was just too powerful and misunderstood.
Still the Enclave held a burning hatred of the spellplague and the spellscarred.
Then in 1486DR the enclave was revitalized!
The great rains that happened during the Sundering refilled the Sea of Fallen Stars.
Ilighon was an island once more.
The Emerald Enclave organized themselves, and joined other factions, to put a stop to
some evil threats to Faerun.
Specifically the Cult of the Dragon.
Many of the Emerald Enclave members follow good aligned deities.
Nature deities, such as Eldath, Mielikki, and Silvanus.
Although to join the Enclave you are required to serve neither good nor evil.
If you have a neutral character the Emerald Enclave is for them.
They strive to preserve the balance, rather than outright stop evil.
Their actions can be seen as good because they do detest evil like undeath.
But overall the Enclave tries to preserve the balance.
In order to become a part of the Emerald Enclave you must perform at least one act that benefited
nature in the Vihon Reach area.
This is the area containing the island Ilighon.
Which this must have changed since the early days of D&D.
Because with Adventure League I'm pretty sure you can just join the Emerald Enclave,
as long as your motivations sync up.
So perhaps this is an old requirement, or we just assume new recruits have already done
this good dead in Vihon Reach already.
To outsiders the Emerald Enclave looks like a druid circle.
But really it's more of a loose confederation of circles and their allies.
It's members include druids, rangers, barbarians, and others who live in the wilderness, respecting
it's ways.
You know someone from the Emerald Enclave by the emerald green clothing they wear.
This could be anything but represents the enclave and openly displays their membership.
Druids in the north often ally with the Harpers, which is an odd exception but the Harpers
are a larger influence in the North.
The Emerald Enclave and the Harpers get along for the most part, but there are some in the
enclave that dislike the Harpers.
Saying their meddling threatens the natural balance of things, almost as much as the evils
they fight against.
I think you could be a nature cleric that follows the Emerald Enclave.
As well as a totem barbarian.
Really cool roleplay potential with this faction.
That's it for today, I hope you enjoyed this look at the Emerald Enclave.
I'll be back next week with another faction.
Please hit like if you enjoyed this video, subscribe, and consider sharing it with a
friend.
Take care everybody!

SCARIEST Ancient Sea MONSTERS That Ever Lived! - Duration: 10:41.
Did you know that marine life millions of years ago was much bigger, and more dangerous,
than what we see today?
Here are 10 of the scariest ancient sea monsters that ever existed!!
10.
Liopleurodon
Just imagine what it's like to swim alongside a creature that's many times your size!!
Pretty intimidating but still nothing like these guys.
The Liopleurodon was one of the largest sea monsters that ever lived.
At about 80 feet long, it was the alpha predator in the shallow waters during the late Jurassic
period, where it hunted crocodiles and giant fish.
It was very well suited to this task with its long jaws and needle sharp teeth, and
it's nose was incredible sensitive- allowing it to detect prey across large distances.
They did, however, need to breathe air, so their range was somewhat limited and they
weren't able to go too far deep into the water.
They had flippers to propel them through the water which meant they weren't as fast and
agile as other creatures at the time, but they more than made up for this with their
ferocious bite!!
9.
Kerygmachela Kierkegaardi
The K Kierkegaardi is a strange creature that lived about 540 million years ago, and recent
discoveries of their fossils have led to a completely new understanding of how animals'
brains have developed!!
Growing up to 10 inches long, (I know, that's not very much compared to the 80 foot Liopleurodon
I just mentioned, but they still have their merit I promise!)
They were oval shaped, with skinny tails, 11 swimming flaps along each side, and two
unusual appendages that protruded from their heads that they used to grab their prey.
They are distant relatives to arthropods of today, such as spiders, lobsters and butterflies.
Unlike these, though, which have 3 segments to their brains, K Kierkegaardi only had one
segment to its brain, which is a much more primitive structure.
It had long been thought that arthropod ancestors would also have 3 parts to their brains, but
these fossilised discoveries have shown this is not the case.
So now scientists are wondering, when their evolution to a more complex structure actually
happened.
And now for number 8, but first do you know what is thought to be the largest fish that
EVER lived?
Let us know in the comments below!
The answer is coming up!
And be sure to subscribe if you are new here so you don;t miss out on the latest videos!!
8.
Dakosaurus
Dakosaurus lived during the Jurassic and Cretaceous eras about 145 million years ago.
The species is often referred to as 'Godzilla' because of the deep shape of its skull, but
it was more like a large crocodile that lived in the saltwater of the oceans.
Growing up to 16 feet long, it had paddle shaped flippers to help propel itself through
the water, as well as a fluke at the end of its tail to provide extra power.
Its large skull and jaw, along with serrated teeth suggest that it had a different diet
to other crocodile species.
Rather than eating primarily fish, Dakosaurus fed on larger prey and, possibly, even other
marine reptiles.
They lived in all the world's oceans, with fossils having been found in what is now Europe,
North America, South America, and Russia.
Little is known about quite how they lived, and whether they gave live birth in the depths
or lay their eggs in the shallows.
But one thing's for sure, though- the Dakosaurus was a type of crocodile unlike anything we
see today!
7.
Ichthyosaur
Ichthyosaurs lived during the Triassic period until around 90 million years ago, when they
mysteriously became extinct- about 25 million years before the event that wiped out the
dinosaurs.
Meaning 'fish lizards', Ichthyosaurs are actually thought to have evolved from a land
reptile that moved back into the water, but it's not yet clear what its precise ancestry
is.
It's a little confusing.
As they were in the oceans for more than 160 million years, there were a number of different
species of Ichthyosaur.
They were at the top of the food chain in the regions for most of this time, but were
eventually replaced by another reptilian creature called the Plesiosaurs.
Because of their streamlined bodies, Ichthyosaurs are thought to have had a top speed of 22
miles per hour through the water.
Resembling fish, some species of could grow to up to 50 feet long!!
They had pointed heads, and teeth designed to catch prey ranging from the smallest fish
to larger, more difficult prey.
6.
The Tully Monster
If you were asked to design the strangest animal you could, then I bet you wouldn't
come up with something as weird as this odd looking creature, called the Tully Monster.
Fossil findings suggest that it lived in the shallow waters of the Eastern United States
about 300 million years ago, with remains having been found in the Mazon Creek fossil
beds in Illinois.
Lots of them have been unearthed, so they were clearly abundant, but they were a very
unusual combination of body parts, which has made it difficult to classify what the creature
is.
With eyes on long stalks, a pincer at the end of a long arm-like structure, and a body
more resembling a mollusc- various teams have come to differing conclusions about what it
was.
Some think it was a mollusc, others think the signs of gill pouches meant they were
fish, and some even think they were vertebrates because of their complex eyes.
Whatever the true classification is, Tully monsters, named after the fossil collector
who first found them, is one of the strangest looking monsters that's ever lived in the
oceans, and sure to be the subject of debate for many years to come.
5.
Kronosaurus
The Kronosaurus was a short necked pliosaur that lived during the Cretaceous era, just
over 100 million years ago.
They grew to around 32 feet long, 9 feet of which was its huge head- big enough that it
could fit an entire human inside it!
Remains have been found in Australia and Colombia, where it would have been the alpha predator
of its time.
It had conical teeth which were almost a foot long each!!
Interestingly, unlike other pliosaurs, the teeth were not serrated.
This means their prey was likely made up of medium sized or small fish, and if they were
to tackle something larger they would have needed to rely on the twisting and turning
their huge bodies to tear flesh apart, just like how crocodiles do today.
The Kronosaurus was the second biggest pliosaur to have ever lived, much bigger than the Liopleurodon
which is often cited as the largest of the species.
They were more than 3 times the size of a typical human, and would easily be the most
dominant predator in the oceans if it was still around today.
4.
Anomalocaridids
If you're squeamish about creepy crawlies, then this next ancient sea monster is probably
going to be your least favourite of all.
Anomalocaridids were shrimp-like creatures that, for millions of years, were the largest
predators in the oceans.
They had soft jointed bodies, and spiny limbs to allow them to catch small prey like worms.
First appearing about 542 million years ago, Anomalocaridids developed at the beginning
of the era known as the Cambrian Explosion, which is when most of the animal groups we
know today first evolved.
Good times, the Cambrian Explosion!!
They grew to up to 3 feet in length, and spent their lives scouring the muddy seafloor at
depths of up to 330 feet.
At this time, the seabed would have been covered in various species of sea stars, sponges,
and molluscs, and would be an ideal feeding ground.
With hundreds of blade like structures across their backs, Anomalocaridids would have easily
swum about picking off their prey, without fear of getting eaten by anything else.
3.
Tylosaurus
The Tylosaurus- a name which means "knob lizard", was one of the largest mosasaurs
to ever live.
They swam in the oceans during the Cretaceous era, about 70 million years ago, and grew
to up to 50 feet long.
They were different to earlier species of mosasaur that propelled themselves through
the water with flippers and, instead, had giant tails that would do all of the work.
Their tails had more than 80 vertebrae, that allowed them to withstand the pressures involved
in moving through the water, and created a visible v shape pushing through the skin.
Tylosaurus' would have swum in the waters known as the Western Interior Seaway that
covered the US and Canada, and were the ocean equivalent of the T-Rex at the time.
Their large teeth and powerful jaws made light work of anything they decided to chase after,
and some remains have even been found after having eaten land dinosaurs- suggesting that
they would lurk near the shallows and take advantage of any creature that ventured too
far from shore.
Despite their ability to attack with their teeth, most evidence points towards Tylosaurus'
using their snouts as a battering ram, and preferring to hit into prey at high speeds,
and knock them unconscious before feeding.
This method also means they most likely stalked their prey from below, would take time to
line themselves up, and then strike before the victim knew what was happening and had
time to swim away.
2.
Luskhan Itilensis
The Luskhan Itilensis is a new species of Pliosaur that was only recently identified
in 2017 from fossils found 15 years earlier in the Volga river in Russia.
Rather than being dinosaurs, they were actually distant relatives of turtles- with 4 large
flippers, big heads, powerful jaws, and very sharp teeth.
They lived in the ocean above what is now Europe around 130 million years ago, and their
skulls alone were up to 5 feet long.
The shape of the Luskhan Itilensis head was what made it unique amongst other similar
species- particularly in the way it resembled that of some types of river dolphin, which
would have allowed it to effectively hunt fish.
Pretty cool, right??
1.
Leedsichthys
Growing up to 55 feet long, the Leedsichthys is thought to be the largest fish that has
ever lived.
(So this answer was actually pretty tricky!!)
It's difficult to know much about it, though, because only fragments of this giant creature
have ever been found.
At one point is was believed to be twice the size, but even the recent reduction in estimates
based on new finds makes it bigger than today's whale sharks, and by far the biggest bony
fish that's ever been discovered.
They lived in the oceans around 165 million years ago and, like whale sharks, would have
survived on a diet of plankton.
It's been a mystery how the Leedsichthys came to grow so large, but the abundance of
food in the oceans at the time could be the cause.
Its size would have been invaluable at the time, because sharing the waters with other
aquatic monsters, like pliosaurs, meant that if you were bigger than the predators, you'd
stand a reasonable chance of evading them because they would, instead, go for easier
prey.
It's one of those cases where bigger was most definitely better!

Creating Simulation-Based Blended Learning Experiences - Duration: 23:06.
we're down to three papers to do so okay. This is working great so this is
I think we can get started this morning. I'm Jesse Stavis from the Russian department here at Bryn Mawr College part of the language panel. This session is going to offer two perspectives on how one might use blended pedagogical approaches and online technologies to help develop skills and critical thinking, research, oral and/or written expression. Our first paper has three authors. First, Irina Walsh from the Russian Department here and also Julio Rodriguez and Ruslan Suvorov from University of Hawaii Manoa and they'll be demonstrating the process of creating simulation based blended learning experiences for learners at their institutions. Ruslan: I don't wanna worry too much about time because
the plan for today's give you a little bit of context then we're gonna talk a
little bit about the process that we use for the simulation we're gonna give you
two examples one for Chinese which is Green Ideas Inc. which actually is now
Korean too so we're using therefore two languages and the Master & Margarita
Talk which is the Russian version of a simulation which we do with remark and
then whenever we talk about these two you know talk a little bit about two
design documents that you may find helpful one of them is called the
Simulation Blueprint which is what we have used as an instructional design
document to guide the design of the simulation and the other one is the
Participant Experience a little bit about how students perceived the
experience and not just a student but also an instructor and just we're three
parties here I'll talk a little bit about that in a minute. So how many of
you know about language flagship? You two? Three? Four?
Okay so the language flagship program is a
national program there is 21 institutions of higher education
Bryn Mawr is part of it that participate in this program and when
you see here in a map is the location of those institutions there is eight languages
represented and there is three multi-institutional languages. One of them is
Chinese which is eight institutions. Russian I think is five or four.
So then Arabic is five and then there is
a single institution languages like Portuguese and Turkish. So within this
context there is a technology innovation center which is the center I direct that
is to help with the technology integration efforts some of those
efforts are discovery efforts, innovation, and some of those are integration is
basically working with the different institutions trying to integrate
technology in meaningful ways it's a little similar to what you guys are
doing LACOL. We are a little bit like a consortium of institutions so in
the same context we have some parallels. Then one thing that you need to know
about the flagship is that it's a very innovative program in terms of language
studies and the one of the characteristics of the program is that
is proficiency based. That means that having you know a certain amount of
years of sitting in classrooms and approving classes doesn't really mean a
lot the reciprocation [ceebar] and that's measured by an independent measure is
not the institution but it's an external measure in our case at the OPI for
example is one of those measures. The oral proficiency interview right.
Irina: All of the entire flagship program is to create those global
professionals so people who can work worldwide in a foreign language right? So
they are getting a major, they are economists physicists whatever they are
interested in, plus they have a professional position to be in a
language.
Ruslan: Exactly so proficiency based is one of the characteristics of the program
the other one is one one piece of the program is called the capstone a
year which is a very important part of it
the flagships have a lot of study abroad experiences in some cases every year and
the captsone year is a year abroad where students do two things: they take, and
correct me if Russian is different because sometimes there is variation
among the languages, [they take and show off their academic]
work which means they're doing academic work with folks in classes that are not
shorter they're not designed for them as non-native speakers of the language.
Therefore many different classes and then there is an internship component
that can be either working with government institution or working with a
private company. So the capstone is split into two typically the first half of a
year one the other half of the year the other and when they come back they have
the tests right? And that's what actually measures how well they did. So within
this context what the Tech Center did as one of the projects that we have has
been to try to work with different institutions and ways to support that
capstone year experience. And one of the things that we are doing is simulations.
So if you take a look at the literature simulation definitions are all over the
place and what you're gonna find is that they're they're huge in nursing for
example, the research time if you're interesting the research I would recommend
going into the nursing part of it because there's a lot of research there
and also in aviation simulations are quite common in that
area. So from our perspective the second definition for it would replace
[yeah that it is a technique if it I got you go to let's say to replace or]
amplify real experiences with valued experiences the guided part being a very
important part because it's it's you know helping people go through an
experience before they go to the actual experience. So in this context within
language instruction simulations have a lot of benefits that we can think about.
One of them is that they can be very useful to implement blended learning
because it's one interesting way to incorporate uses of technology with
classroom work so it's you can help a lot in that way. It gives a lot of
context for a blended learning experience which is something that is a
good thing. They create opportunities for highly contextualized language used
you're gonna hear a little bit more about that and then opportunities to
address interpersonal communication skills at least in the case of our
simulations the simulation is moved forward by people behind the scenes so
it's not a simulated experience in the sense that everything is automated. There
are people who are actually enacting the simulation and then there is also
opportunities to address 21st century skills which are the tough ones but how
do you write a good email to a colleague that is a professional email and things
like that so those are skills that sometimes even in the native language
students don't have, so it's a really good thing to have those. So going back to how we
design the whole experience the way we have approached simulations has been
very similar for all three so we started out by thinking about the learner
experience. Not the technology, just what the learners would go through.
You're thinking about the learning experience what we did was create a
vignette first and this vignette basically describes - all this is
available online by the way so if you would like to see it was not intended
for you to read it this is its it it's online it's just to
show you what it looks like - and so the vignette is super useful for us all these are
comments sometimes in technology comments or pedagogical comments why
things are being done in a certain way and the vignette basically tells you the
story about of one person who goes through the simulation and how that
works. So this is a wonderful way to kind of start thinking about how this
would work in the students shoes right? Like the actual people who will go
through the simulation. The other design document that we'll use is called
Simulation Blueprint and this we design keeping in mind that we needed at least
four moving parts to be aligned so it helps a lot to think about these four
things that you see in the middle within the context of the first thing which is
the expected outcomes. So that's that's where we start. We start out okay what
would you like what would we like students to do what we like we like them
to experience. Then we think about the focus tasks that will help us achieve
those goals that overarching goal the materials and communication tools that
will be used it's good to think about these parts,
you know focus on these parts one at a time. In the materials and communication
tools for example we have discussions such as how can we make this more
realistic for example we're using a communication tool for a Chinese
simulation it makes sense for the students to use something that issues in
China not Facebook or something that is banned in China right? So we do things we
integrate technologies and tools that make sense for that context.
Let the participant activities participants activities and roles which
are also good to think about in our case we have at least three different
constituents in the simulation we have the staff from the Tech Center then there is
the instructor and then there are the students and the three work you know
doing, contributing to to how the simulation works. So it helps to
those roles sorted out. One role that we having the Chinese simulation is
community members who come to see presentations and evaluate the students
and also interview students. Then the rules and implementation strategies so
basically we try to describe how the rules are gonna work at the beginning
this sounds straightforward but when you start thinking about it gets a little bit
complicated and we'll talk a little bit more about that at the end but rules for
example for the Chinese simulation you can apply for only one job and
things like that which make things a little bit clearer to the students so
they know what to expect. So this is basically a description of
the process we went through the simulation for Chinese is basically
based on a company a fictitious company that we created it's called Green Ideas
the purpose of the company is to help other companies to become greener. So for
example if I think one of one example was Tesla wanting to open a branch in
China, Beijing, and the task was to provide advice for how Tesla to do
that in a green efficient way. So that gives us a big umbrella topic that we
can help students go in their area of professional interest.
So for example if you're interested in law like Irina said some students are
not necessarily just language majors they're also working on other tracks so
if you're interested in law and you're doing Chinese then this problem fits
well in your context because you have to figure out the legal aspects of Tesla
opening it plant in China. So we we give students the opportunity to actually use
the type of language that they will be using in the real world,
in their own profession. So we have for Chinese we have two modules the
application module and the teamwork module, these happen in a semester and
what you see here is basically key tasks that happen during the implementation of
a simulation. So I'll give you just a very brief overview of each of these for
the application module. Basically there is a whole company website that we
created where you find jobs we first interview students to find out what -
actually survey, not interview, we survey students to find out what it is that
they're interested in. Sometimes we can know that through the instructor and
then we design jobs that we think will appeal to them. So if you're in law
for example and you are in Chinese there's gonna be a job there for you
that has to do with law and you you know you find relevant to what you're doing.
So one of the first tasks then is for students to go and explore the website
and prepare because they're gonna be applying for a job there and then
they're gonna have an interview. So the second step is to submit an application
and this is this part is done in a blended way we I think we asked
instructors to do at least one class where they spend time talking about the
cover letter and the CV. This has been incredibly helpful because some students
don't even have a CV in English and they all the sudden they have to create one
in Chinese (Laughter) So it's an eye-opener and it helps that's what we get from their
feedback that it's a really good experience to go through.
Besides that not only they don't have a resume in English but they have no
clue how to do that culturally, you know, well in the target language. So the
instructional design document that we have is basically a rubric that we share
with instructors or instructors can get feedback.
So then students go through these process of greeting and revising their
applications, submitting it and then they have interviews with people they don't
know basically the tech center carries out those interviews through Skype and
we invite people from the community to help us in this task and the people from
the community you know come up with a couple of questions from the company
website and then during interview students have to interact with people
they have never met. It's very very much is simulated very real simulated
experience and that's the sort of the idea for the Chinese simulation. The next
one is a simulation with it for Russian and Irina I think you start with this
one.
Irina: So we only ran the simulation once,
we ran it this spring so it is still fresh and needs some work.
But it was already a great experience for all three parties involved the students,
the instructor, and then the tech center, the tech support. So it was an
existing course but it developed [you are going to break] to teach reading Master
and Margarita in Russian and it's a 400 page long novel.
I had six juniors in the flagship program some very proficient readers
very proficient speakers and it's part of this course. I had their final
presentation and final paper general content based and of course I was not
completely happy with that because I did that a million times
so I was ready for something new. So in February so when the semester already started
the tech center had contacted all the faculty saying that they would
like to do some blended learning pilots with us and I thought this is a
great way to introduce some blended learning into my course by changing the
presentation and paper performance into an opportunity for blended learning. So in the next
month we developed the whole simulation and
then from after Spring Break until the end of the semester
which students presented at the end of the semester it was very very rough.
We came up with two vignettes
one to stimulate a TEDx event and another to simulate an academic conference both
of them would be open to the public as Julio says this is one of the components
this is the test to come out of the classroom into the broader world and
students unanimously chose the academic conference which makes sense because they signed up for [it so]
So they chose the vignette and then all the work started for us um the Tech Center
developed the website for the conference. We called it the Master and Margarita
talk and then the students had to go through all of the stages of preparation
for a conference. So they had to submit their conference
proposals. They got feedback from the conference organizers from the tech center and
about their conference proposals, they revised the proposals and submitted them again
we accepted their proposals we accepted them into the conference and posted
their proposals on the conference website then they prepared for the
presentation and then they gave that presentation to the public and the
public was the Trico community and also via Zoom other flagships too.
To prepare to write a proposal to prepare to make a presentation better
they had some lessons and this is just...
Ruslan: I can talk briefly about the
participants experience we're running out of time so basically this is a
summary what Irina has just mentioned
divided by weeks so I'll just go week by week during the first week the
participants had to explore the website and complete lesson one which was about
how to write an app store how to write a proposal in Russian and then they
started drafting the proposal during week two they had to submit their
proposal and complete lesson 2 which was about how to structure your presentation
at a conference. In week 3 they had to revise the proposal based on the
feedback that we provided to the students. In week 4 they finished the
revisions and submitted the revised proposal and the proposals were posted
on their website and during week 5 they had to do lesson 3 which was to help
them learn how to ask and answer questions in Russian during the
conference.
Irina: Or present in Russian. We were preparing them to present to interact during a conference,
and to formerly write. So former writing, presentational speaking,
and interpersonal speaking in an academic setting. That's why we
included the question asking into the lessons.
Ruslan: Right and then during the penultimate week they had to do the last lesson
which was to help them practice the beginning of the presentation because
that's usually the most difficult part and they also had to rehearse
their presentations and for that we used Extemporary which is a tool for
recording and giving feedback on extemporaneous speech and during week
seven we gave we had an actual event which was both on-site and online.
Students gave fifteen minute presentations and they had questions
from the audience that they had to respond to. So I will let Irina talk about
the benefits for instructors and students and the lessons that we learned
Irina: So for students they definitely engaged their presentational speaking, presentational language,
but they also worked on their reading and listening through the lessons
because also we need to say that part of the lessons were this each like video
thing where students watched a video and went through assignments while they
were watching video on comprehension questions for choice
questions all kinds of things I think it. So they they did work on their language
but I think that two most important things that they got away from that
experience is that it was their comfort zone expander I think the most difficult
part for the students and the most exciting part for the students was to
speak in front of an audience especially in audience that they did not see. This is
much easier than, as you all know, if if you participated in a webinar that speaking into the abyss is
much harder than speaking to people who are live and reacting to this.
And then another thing is that after the conference was over they came up to me
and said this felt [that like company or country] and this is exactly what we were
going for with this experience so that's another great benefit for them. One huge
issue that we all need to think about in simulation is it's a great investment at
of time between developing the lessons finding content for the lessons finding
the right tool to develop lessons because the technological possibilities
are absolutely endless and to choose the right things and I'm speaking for all of
us. Also communicating between the Tech Center and me and the students
that takes time making it easy and accessible to the students making them understand
what they're doing why they're doing it they'reand what they're getting out of it is another time
investment and this is probably the only investment that happens in class. So we
were talking about the administering the product for us but the rest of the work
was outside of class. So that basically all of the project was outside of class.
Also because the project grew out of the existing syllabus it was so integrated
in the syllabus it felt very natural and easy to follow for all of us in
class. And a personal professional development for me because I learned so
much.
Ruslav: We will probably skip this right? I'm not sure if we're gonna do questions
now or later? Okay let's do that. Thank you so much.
