Hello everyone and welcome on De Papier et de Rêves' channel
I'm Ursula and today i'll be painting with you a still life
For this video i was a bit in lack of inspiration
I have a lot of ideas and reference image to work with
But i wanted to do something more spontaneous for once
So the idea of painting a still life came out
I took what i have in my kitchen, bananas and lemons
And i've tried to make a painting out of it
And today i'll not paint from a reference image but from real life !
You can see the scene i was painting at the top of your screen, a piece of my bananas and my two lemons
I've chosen those fruits first because i did have them
But also because they are yellow, and i have always had difficulties to work with yellows
So i start the painting with a very very quick sketch
i didn't bother with details, i just wanted to have the shapes right
And after this sketch i start putting some colors and shadows all together so that they blend nicely
Once this first blurry layer has dried i can start define shapes
and densify the colors si that they becam more powerful
For the yellow in the lemons i've used winsor yellow deep
It's a yellow a bit too warm for a lemon
but it's the only i had so i had to deal with that
For the bananas, as the yellow of a banana isn't as saturated as the one of a lemon
i've made a mix with winsor yellow deep and yellow ochre
For all the shadows i've made a mix of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna
I put a bit more blue when the shadow are on the table so that they appear grey-blueish
But as for the shadow on the bananas i put a bit more of burnt sienna so that the shadow appears warmer
My goal here isn't to make a painting in the botanical style, realistic style
I'm more focus on to gave an impression, on shadows and light,
and on how to paint this subject spontaneously
It's all about observation and that's a good things as i said often that i lack of observation skills
So here i just have to observe and reproduce what i see on paper
That's why i don't really care about details
I prefer to have an accurate image with the right shapes in the right place
For the details i can deal with them later
As i work quickly i have some colors bleeding en each other
But it doesn't bother me as it brings softness to the painting
And i will be able later to add a sharper edge if necessary
It's often necessary to work quickly with watercolor as the paper can dry quickly
It depend of the weather but it's often the case that the paper dry quicker than we would like it
So we need to work quickly
But there's a difference between quickness and haste
A long time ago i was in haste but now i can managed to be just quick
To avoid rushing into a painting, it heps me to plan what i wanted to do
So in my mind i decide to start with that color and make it bleed into that color
I plan the big steps of my painting and the order i want to paint them so that i can managed my time better
I remember even at some point i was sketching a painting a then i wrote on the side "first - paint this wash"
"second - paint that wash" and like that 5 to 6 steps
So that i had a very precise idea of what i wanted to do and do them at the best timing
It may appear a bit stiff to paint with this approach
But once i painted several painting with this technique i was able to get more freedom
and this steps became somehow natural like a skill i've learned
And i was able to manage my time better
While this speech i've added some detail in my painting
I've darkened the shadows so that the colors will pop more
And i've warmed up the banana colors so that it will be more different from the lemon color
let's talk about supplies, i've used an Escoda Aquario nº18
And a Raphaël 803 nº2
For the colors i've used ultramarine blue
Viridian
Verona gold ochre
Winsor yellow deep
Burnt sienna
And my paper is Arches cold pressed
I've used quite a small palette of colors with only 5
But i'm able to get darker colors, different greens and lots of tone just by mixing them
The ultramarine blue is very important here because it's a granulating color
the pigment sits in the hollow of the paper and looks like powder
And it allows me to create for some part the texture of the lemon skin
I juste have to accentuate the effect by painting some dots onto the skin
And they will add the idea of roughness
This painting was quite quick and it was a very good exercise for me : observing and reproducing
I think i should do it more often
Anyway, the next week's video is almost ready
and it will be about the same subject but with a untraditional twist and lots of fun !
This video is ending, thanks for watching

See you soon !
