BRAD: The expectations are set as the UNI volleyball
team is the favorite to win the Missouri Valley
Conference.
Today we talk with coach Bobbi Petersen about what
she thinks this team can accomplish.
We look at the top defensive returners for
UNI football.
We hear from the Panther volleyball team, and we
get athletic director David Harris mic'd up at
the ballpark.
It's a first pitch, here on Panther Sports Talk.
Brad: The 2018 UNI volleyball season gets
started this weekend.
We're joined with UNI volleyball coach Bobbi
Petersen.
Coach, you enter your 19th season and you're coming
off a fantastic season in 2017.
27-9 was your record.
You had an NCAA Tournament win over Louisville.
How do you build off a season you had in 2017.
Bobbi: I think one of the biggest things is we did
have a great season but we left some unfinished
business with this group.
One of the big things in our mind is a conference
championship.
We have two seniors, three seniors that haven't won a
conference championship so that alone to me is
motivating for them.
I think the other thing is the match against
Minnesota, we were right in.
One of the goal that has been at the forefront of a
lot of teams over the years is to try and match
what other teams have done here, and the Sweet 16 is
one of them.
So we didn't accomplish that last year so I think
the motivating part of being able to go against
some of the best teams, beat some of the best
teams, but yet unfinished business, really helped
for our spring and summer training.
Brad: You talk about hat MVC Title, you're kids are
picked to win it this year.
How tough is the Valley going to be and what do
you ladies need to do to win?
Bobbi: I think the Valley is going to be crazy
tough.
And you look at the teams that are traditionally
good, Missouri State, who lost a lot of kids but
they're the team that reloads for sure, and then
all the other teams that return a lot of veteran
players, and are going out and having some good
preseason schedules this year.
So that's fun.
I always think the conference is one of those
things, you have to not only work hard but really
disciplined during that two month time period and
you have to show up for every match.
So you have to do that in our two month period.
I think the other thing, that conference
tournament, that's one weekend.
So you can't put all your eggs in that one
basket but prepare yourself as you're moving
up.
And playing those teams for a third time, there's
challenges with that as well.
Brad: Coach, you have some pieces coming back, 4
starters return, a couple solid back row kids that
saw a lot of playing time a year ago.
you do replace Heather Hook at the setter
position.
Rachel Koop in line to do that.
how much growth do you see right before the start of
this fall season, from everything starting to gel
together?
Bobbi: I think that setter position, and Heather was
a three year starter and setter of the year.
It's like having a quarterback for three
years and then that Qb is gone.
I think there's a lot we had to do this spring
offensively, and Rachel's been a round so she has
been in our program and knows the system and has
actually battled for that post ion year in and year
out.
I think her being here in the spring has forced her
to grow in so many ways as well.
We want that person to be a big leader.
She's been a quiet leader in the past and it doesn't
always work to be a quiet leader in that offensive
leader position, so she's done a good job of getting
out of her comfort zone with that, while improving
the skill part of it too.
Brad: Talk about the senior class, you have
Piper Thomas, Kendyl Sorge, Lexi Astor, those
three combined will help lead this team.
Bobbi: You look at Piper and Kendyl, we used to
red shirt a lot of kids and they came into a class
where we had three freshman playing, so those
kids had a lot of court time over the years.
each year they picked up the production on the
court.
Then Lexi, who hasn't had the time on the court,
she's come in during crucial times, she's one
of the best servers on our team but brings a
different type of leadership that you need
off the court as well.
So we look for the production of those kids
but we also look for their ability to improve on
their leadership part and part of that is getting in
there and being put in positions to do that.
Brad: Alright, we'll have more on the returners for
UNI volleyball as the 2018 seasons gets underway this
weekend.
We have more Panther Sports Talk, right after
this.
BRAD: This summer the Waterloo Bucks baseball
team invited all Panther fans to join in
celebrating their favorite school with UNI day at the
ballpark.
There were video tributes to moments of the past,
appearances by mascots TC & TK, and director of
athletics, David Harris, threw out the first pitch.
He also went mic'd up for the evening, and our
Panther Sports Talk cameras were there for all
the action.
David: Let's head in.
Hello.
There you go.
Enjoy the game you guys.
Thank you very much.
You'll be throwing out the first pitch, we're going
to right over by the Bucks dugout here.
David: OK.
I want to get my kids in their seats first and then
go out there.
Sounds perfect.
Just find where we're going to be sitting.
Either one of you could take my place throwing out
the first pitch.
You look like you're much more bulked up.
I like you chances of getting it across the
plate better than mine.
How you doing bud?
I'm doing alright.
Good.
Wish me luck.
You ready to throw the first pitch.
- I'm ready - Let's see what you've got.
<<applause>>> Alright, a strike.
Good job David.
Thank you very much.
Thanks David.
Thank you.
You did a good job.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Oh yeah, my first and last baseball autograph.
There you go.
You're 10 minutes of fame.
Thanks right.
There you go.
Thank you.
- You're welcome.
So what did you think?
I think it could have been a little faster and little
lower.
It was kind of up.
.. What are you a pitching coach?
It could have been faster and lower.
- Yeah You did a good job, like you made it.
Yeah your supposed to be proud I got I over the
plate.
Fan: You can't please everyone.
David: Apparently everyone's a critic.
Next time I throw out the first pitch you can go out
there for me.
Yes it is.
Out.
those foul balls go out in the parking lot and can
hit your vehicle.
Which is why I didn't park in the spots closest to
the fence.
Let's get a hot dog and a large popcorn.
You have to have a popcorn, it's the
ballpark.
So do you know how to floss?
Oh, no.
TC appears to be trying.
I don't like the floss,even though I do it
some times.
Wesley, kind of knows, but if you ever see him do
it, it's like doing it vigorously and then going
to the other side.
I say, Wesley you know that's not how you do it,
and he says, that's how I do it.
Wesley looks more like he's having a fit.
I'm afraid he's gong to break a hip or something.
Oh, Newby.
<<cheering>> It's over.
That's our first year in the NCAA Tournament.
A long time ago.
When was that, 1990?
Oh, here we go.
Yeah.
<<Cheering>><<music>>
BRAD: We thank David for allowing us the
opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at
his first pitch and his evening with his kids at
the Waterloo Bucks.
Now, when we return, we continue our season
preview with UNI volleyball coach Bobbi
Petersen, hear from her top returning athletes,
and we step onto the football field to preview
the Panthers defensive play makers.
Today's MidwestOneBank where are they now
Panther, is Bryce Paup.
Bryce played linebacker at UNI from 1986-1989 earning
second team All-America honors in 1989.
He went on to have an 11-year NFL career
highlighted with an NFL defensive player of the
year honor in 1995 with the Buffalo Bills.
Bryce has returned to the UNI football program as
defensive line coach, a position he held at UNI
from 2013-2016, helping Xavier Williams and Karter
Schult make it to the NFL.
