6 Animals with Extraordinary Adaptations to Cave Life - Duration: 8:14.

[♩INTRO]

It's not easy living in a cave.

There isn't a ton of space, the pickings are slim,

and then there's the whole living-in-total-darkness bit.

So it's not surprising that the species that live in caves, or troglobites,

have made some adjustments.

Many are eyeless, for example, or have become basically colorless.

But cave-dwelling species haven't just lost stuff.

The animals on this list have all gained amazing traits

because they live their lives in the dark abyss.

And those features are helping scientists understand evolution and adaptation better.

Mexican cave fish are maybe best known for their ghostly appearance,

but don't judge them purely on their looks.

While they may have lost their eyes,

they're still incredibly good at finding food

thanks to taste buds in some pretty weird places,

like their lips, gill arches,

and on both the underside and the topside of their heads.

This ensures they don't miss a tasty treat when rummaging around

in the sediment in search of worms, snails, or insects.

In total, they have 3 to 6 times the number of taste buds

that their surface-dwelling counterparts have

and that gives them a big advantage when it comes to finding food.

In one study, equal numbers of both types of fish were housed together

in a warm, dark experimental tank,

and then presented with bits of food one at a time.

The cave fish got a hold of 80 percent of the food offered,

which the researchers thought was due to both their heightened sense of taste

and their strategy of searching the bottom for food.

It's especially impressive that they can out-sniff their kin

given that their brains are 30% smaller, though not all parts have shrunk.

To help deal with all the taste information coming in,

the Mexican cave fish actually has an enlarged forebrain,

including an especially big teleost gustatory center

the bundle of neurons that deals with taste.

So pretty much their whole head is involved in tasting somehow

like a giant tongue.

Whip spiders are not the kind of arachnid you want to come acrossin the dark.

At least, not if you're a small cave-dweller.

They have long, really long, very, too long spindly legs

and two overgrown forearms that look like

some kind of terrifying hybrid between a venus fly trap and pincers.

And they have a brutish personality to go with that frightening appearance.

Encounters between two whip spiders generally end

in one of them cannibalizing the other

except if they're both troglobites.

It turns out cave varieties are just big softies by comparison.

In a 2015 paper published in the Journal of Arachnology,

biologists put pairs of whip spiders together in a gladiator style arena,

and watched what happened.

It must have been a Friday...

It took cave-dwelling ones longer to get to the point of

waving those terrifying forearms at their opponent, and when they did,

their displays were shorter.

This might be because cave life is so cramped that they bump

into each other more often than on the surface.

And because food is more limited in caves,

they don't have the energy to waste on squabbling.

The whip spider's gentle temperament is an example

of behavioral evolution, because adapting to an extreme environment

doesn't always mean changing physically.

It's probably no surprise to you that life in a cave is pretty dark.

While many animals have lost the ability to see, some have gone

the other direction and developed ways to brighten things up a bit.

Glow worms, which aren't worms at all, but the maggots of a fungus gnat,

use their bright butts to hunt for food in caves and other dark habitats

in New Zealand, like the famously beautiful Waitomo caves.

They fashion fishing lines out of a silk-like material dotted with sticky globs

of saliva and urea regurgitated from their mouths which are then

dangled them from the cave ceiling.

But rather than simply waiting for something to happen across their snares,

they lure unsuspecting insects towards them by glowing.

This light or bioluminescence is the byproduct of a chemical reaction

involving oxygen and a compound called luciferin.

It's the same way fireflies light up,

but the ability evolved separately in them and the New Zealand glow worm.

And in the glow worm, the process of making light happens in

excretory organs in their rear ends called malpighian tubules,

whereas fireflies have specialized light-producing organs in their abdomen.

All this might seem like a lot of effort for a meal,

but eating is literally the maggots' only job for 10 to 11 months.

Then, they pupate and emerge as adults.

The gnats only have two to four days to reproduce because

they don't have mouths, so they quickly die of starvation…

if they're not ensnared by one of their cousins first.

When you're living life in a cave, hearing can be hard.

With all those echoey walls, it's difficult to localize sound.

So instead of listening for sound,

several species of cave crickets have found a way to feel sound instead.

Insects usually hear airborne sounds using a structure

called the tympanal organ, which looks kind of like an exposed drum

on the side or leg of an insect's body.

But cave crickets don't have them.

Instead, they rely on something called the subgenual organ

which senses vibrations from the ground.

This organ is found on a section of their legs called the tibia

because it's in a similar position as the mammalian shinbone,

which makes sense because their legs are the parts in contact with the ground.

There are other insects with this vibration-sensing organ,

but theirs pick up on higher frequency sounds because those travel better in air,

whereas cave cricket subgenual organs

are tuned to the low frequencies of ground vibrations.

And in addition to finding food,

the crickets use their leg-hearing to locate mates.

Males will vibrate their abdomens to send signals through the ground

which are, hopefully, felt by a female nearby.

Now that's blind dating.

Swimming around in caves in southern Europe

is the world's only exclusively cave-dwelling salamander: the olm.

Like many troglobites, its sense of sight is pretty much non-existent

because its eyes never fully develop and end up covered in skin.

But it more than makes up for it with its amazing sense of smell.

Scientists have shown the salamanders can quickly locate living

and dead food items in total darkness,

and they can even find meals in the presence of a fast-moving current.

It's not that they have a particularly special "nose" either

the olm's olfactory epithelium,

the tissue that picks up smell signals and sends them to the brain,

looks pretty much the same as any other vertebrates.

But that layer of cells is up to 5 times thicker than in other salamanders,

though it's not clear how that translates to better sniffing.

And like with the crickets, olms don't just use smells to find food.

The animals are often found cuddling up in little rock crevices, and even opt

for snuggling if given the option between an empty or an occupied nook.

And they find and select between cuddle buddies

using their super sense of smell.

Most of the time, they don't even mind cozying

up to a member of the same sex.

But olms can live for nearly a century, take 12-15 years to mature,

and females only lay eggs once every 12.5 years on average.

So when breeding is on the table, males take over crevices to use as love

nests, and the smelly signals they send out can help other males avoid a fight.

After all, you don't want your friends getting in the way when you're

trying to woo a mate that's in the mood less than once a decade.

For the longest time scientists thought the tiny organ on each of the

cave beetle's antennae, called Hamann's organ, helped them smell.

But thanks to some pretty clever and kind of mean experiments in the 1970s,

they discovered it actually detects moisture levels in the air

like built in humidity sensors.

To figure this out, researchers cut the beetle's antennae to various lengths

and put them in a choice chamber with two different levels of humidity,

knowing the bugs prefer moist environments.

The ones with their Hamman's organs cut off weren't able

to find the more humid chamber.

Scientists aren't exactly sure how Hamann's organs work,

but they think water droplets in the air may cause sensory cells

or hygroreceptors to swell or stretch, which then send signals to the brain.

The brain combines those signals with temperature information

from thermoreceptors, and the result is a humidity sense.

To some extent, we can sense humidity too, but the beetles

are way better at it thanks to their special organs.

But why they need to be so sensitive to moisture

is still a bit of a scientific mystery.

One hypothesis is that the moisture content of their food matters a lot.

Many insects get water they need from their meals,

but because food is scarce where the cave beetle lives,

it needs to make sure what it's eating is nice and juicy, not dry like a cracker.

Or, it could be because female cave beetles only lay a few large eggs that take

a long time to develop, so laying them somewhere moist prevents

them from drying out before the little ones hatch.

Either way, finding moisture is probably pretty important to them,

so they've become outstanding humidity sensors.

Sure, living in a cave is lonely, dark, and challenging for all kinds of reasons.

But it isn't that bad.

You might wind up looking a little pasty, but as the creatures on this list show,

you could also develop some pretty awesome super powers.

Thanks for watching this episode of SciShow!

And if you liked learning about these troglobites' super powers,

you might like our news episode where we explain how

Mexican cave fish have turned being diabetic into a good thing.

Do certain people exist to be ruled? - Duration: 14:39.

I just finished binging Bojack Horseman season 5, a show that deals extensively with the

intersection between a person's inner life and their actions.

A look into a character's inner world is what can turn a predatory, alcoholic, asshole

into a somewhat sympathetic predatory, alcoholic, asshole.

[BOJACK INNER NARRATIVE]

It really makes you question if we have the power

to really change, or if we're more of victim to automated processes than we thought.

But that's only fiction.

Enter this controversial PsychToday study and article, "Not Everyone Conducts Inner

Speech?"

In it, Doctor Russell T Hurlburt presents a study he conducted on inner speech, you

know that little voice in your head that guides your every move?

A group of students were asked to talk about the way they processed their thoughts about

different subjects, Surprisingly, some of them of didn't experience inner speech at all.

"Maybe Baars talks to himself all the time, and maybe McWhorter himself sees images of

written words while he talks (there's reason to be skeptical of both claims), but I've

investigated such things as carefully as I know how and become convinced that most people

(let alone all people) do not do such things."

"Most people (including psychologists and consciousness scientists and quite likely

you, dear reader), don't know the characteristics of their own and others' inner experience."

Have we been completely wrong about what it feels to be conscious this entire time?

If these people don't have inner speech, is their existence automated?

Alright cut the dramatic bullshit, this article was posted on some leftist subreddit along

with a question about what implications this had on the movement.

And in and of itself, it has zero implications.

I mean, f[HOO]king Einstein didn't have inner speech, inner speech isn't the same as consciousness

or introspection.

Just like some people can't imagine images, some don't have inner speech.

But it's a seductive, if narcissistic, scenario, being sentient in a sea of drones.

Horror movies are made out of this stuff.

And it's the belief in this idea, a pervasive cynicism of the world and humanity, that can

tell a lot about a person's political beliefs.

Research has found that cynicism and distrust of others is correlated with having an authoritarian

personality type and voting for authoritarian policies.

If you don't put faith in others, well, the placement of strict hierarchies and systems

of punishment begins to make sense.

Anyway, originally I wanted this video to be a fun, escapist what-if scenario.

Y'know, are there drones who mindlessly carry on with their life, can they handle

autonomy in the hypothetical future socialist world?

But like all fun things and politics, in my research for the video it became really clear

really fast that this wasn't just a fantasy, and it made me question my own willingness

to buy into the narrative.

This topic has been covered extensively by others, we all know the basics, so I'll

make it quick.

Here's two-dollar Jefferson on the topic: "A black [is] at least as brave, and more

adventuresome.

But this may perhaps proceed from a want of forethought, which prevents their seeing a

danger till it be present."

Psychologist Lewis Terman, father of the gifted education movement, has this to say:

"Children of [Spanish-Indian and Mexican families] should be segregated into separate

classes.

They cannot master abstractions, but they can often be made into efficient workers."

Here you see the prevailing sentiment of the time, black people, Native people and others

were animalistic drones with little consciousness.

Who, because of bogus science on their low IQ and brain size were deemed inferior and

subject to forced sterilization by the U.S. government, a practice that the U.S. Supreme

Court held up as constitutional.

While eventually the tide of history changed for racial minorities, it didn't change

for everyone.

"I feel I cannot stand this place a minute longer and soon I shall lose the brains, and

not be able to interest myself in others and everything that goes on in the world.

The monotony and routine simply drives me wild…

I feel I shall go on degenerating in this environment into an animal, that only lives

to eat – as we do here! – and has not thought beyond.

For really that is all the 'treatment' consists of."

"I have only just realised that I am actually in a lunatic asylum.

Who on Earth ordered the cabman to drive me here?"

Intellectually disabled people have always existed.

Madness is referenced numerous times in the Bible for example.

And during the Middle Ages, people's approach to them was… a bit draconian.

Their treatment varied by culture, but most associated people with mental disabilities

with the spiritual and the occult.

It was commonly thought that they were possessed by demons, so their treatment varied from

cruelly beating a person until the demon was exorcised, to bartering with the demon to

get them to leave voluntarily.

Most of these individuals ended up paupers and vagabonds, and while their lives were

never easy, they enjoyed relative freedom.

With the Renaissance came a fascination with reason, unreason and enlightenment.

People who were considered mad were still heavily stigmatized, but seen with a peculiar

sense of respect, it was believed that they were uniquely privy to certain cosmic truths.

The emphasis on reason eventually manifested itself in the medical model of madness, which

attributing madness to physical deficiencies in the body, not the occult.

From the 17th century onward, the mad were rounded up, confined and removed entirely

from society for treatment in asylums.

The treatment of madness could be overwhelmingly cruel.

Simulated drowning sessions, tranquilizing boxes that shut off sensation in the body,

and being put on spinning machines to induce vomiting and loss of consciousness.

As technology became more advanced, strait jackets to limit movement and lobotomies were

used often.

But it wasn't just the mad who were confined.

Overpopulated cities began to crack down on idleness, and using the police as their enforcement

mechanism, all deviant elements of society, from those with legitimate mental disorders,

to criminals, the unemployed, and women who disrespected their husbands were confined.

Some in workhouses to force economic contributions for all members of society, and others in

asylums.

Civilization and madness were completely opposed after all.

Civilization represents reason, while madness represents unreason.

And unreason was the battering ram used to remove anyone and everyone who was considered

unfit for society.

Despite a lot changing in medical science, institutionalization remains a major issue

for anyone with mental disabilities.

There was another controversial article, published in 2016 titled, "The War on Stupid People."

Famous statistician David H. Freedman argues that the United States has gone too far in

its quest to establish a meritocratic society, and in the process we have begun equating

human worth itself to intelligence.

It's unnecessarily glib and a little condescending, but it's unmistakably correct.

People who have low IQ's have a much lower quality of life.

They make far less money and are more likely to meet an early death.

People with low IQ's have been shut out pretty systematically, whether it's employment

opportunities disappearing, employers checking your college GPA when hiring or conducting

pre-employment tests to check your intelligence.

And you might not see anything wrong with this either, because if you're like me,

meritocratic ideals have been something we grew up with, if they're less able then

they deserve less of the pie.

And our collective fetish for IQ can be seen everywhere, from the circle-jerk on what the

Florida man is up to this week, to the Darwin Awards and top rated IAmVerySmart posts.

The most popular cult shows center on troubled genius, and people increasingly value intelligence

in their partners at the expense of other traits.

I think you get the point.

Freedman notes that it wasn't always so bad, up to the 50's, having an average or

low IQ wouldn't affect your quality of life very much at all.

He ends the article by noting that "when Michael Young, a British sociologist, coined

the term meritocracy in 1958, it was in a dystopian satire."

One where those who were destined to rule were fast-tracked on their way in life at

the expense of those without merit.

Sound familiar?.

A few points before we continue.

First, yeah things got worse for certain people with low IQ's after the fifties, for others

it was always that way, the United States has a long history of using IQ tests as justification

to gate-keep success.

America could be great for white men with low IQ because it was awful for just about

everyone else.

And secondly, it equates IQ with intelligence.

Not even the co-daddy of the IQ test, Alfred Binet thought it was an adequate measure of

intelligence, it can't measure emotional intelligence or creativity or a bunch of other

variables that make up what we think of when we think intelligence.

And studies show that having too high of an IQ, can make you a worse leader and manager,

so IQ even falters as a capitalist metric for workplace success.

You had one job IQ!

And third, and this might be the most important point of all, it assumes that IQ is an actual

measure of some tangible intellectual ability.

I don't know enough to say whether IQ measures anything other than an individual's ability

to take an IQ test, whether it's a simple aptitude exam that measures collected knowledge

with a Western flavor, but there's a serious argument to be made that IQ is a useless metric

entirely.

Either way, I want to argue on the terms of the author.

IQ equals intelligence equals merits, and that's the basis from which we'll continue,

because trying to decipher any further than this is too much for my peanut brain.

There's always an undercurrent of fatalism when we talk about intelligence, an unspoken

truth that it's either something you're born with, or something you acquire early

that can't change much.

There's serious science on the heritability of IQ, and because it's such a coveted trait,

insinuating that people or groups of people tend to have less of it than others is a huge

sin.

But I won't shy away from the controversy.

IQ and poverty are linked.

Heh you thought I was going to go somewhere else with that didn't you?

Nah, IQ and poverty.

And it's a nasty connection.

"Research shows that children who slip into poverty, even for a short time, suffer long-term

setbacks even when their families regain their economic footing," says psychologist Ruby

Takanishi, PhD "In addition to negative health outcomes[,]research

also shows that children raised in poverty are more likely to experience negative educational

and cognitive outcomes, often as a result of less mental stimulation and increased stress

in their living situations.

Some research even shows that the brains of poor children may be unable to process information

in the same way as the brains of kids in higher-income families."

"even though the economy is likely to recover in the next few years, a generation of disadvantaged

children may not."

Damn.

The process of cognitive recession in adults who slip into poverty is also measurable,

meaning being poor will actively hurt your intelligence.

Poverty creates poverty in a vicious cycle.

Which really flies in the face of everything we were ever told about how wealth was self-selecting

and those who were poor and homeless deserved it.

This view is still everywhere, with articles that have titles like "Is the American Dream

dead?"

And there's an obsessive amount of effort that goes into measuring the level of social

mobility in the country.

If we're reduced to a caste system where you can't advance no matter how hard you

try, well, we haven't made much progress from the old feudal system.

But assuming that the system is well-oiled and effort, intelligence and spunk is correlated

with higher success, is it still all that different from feudalism?

I mean, yeah, being able to advance economically is hugely important, but both meritocracy

and feudalism come with one important assumption: that, yes, some people exist to be the rulers,

and others exist to be ruled.

I would like to say that capitalism is special because feudalism came with the assumption

that your position as ruled and ruler was bred into you, but throughout much of capitalism's

history that, wasn't very different at all really.

And even today, we've decided that we're okay with unlimited levels of destitution

and inequality.

We just tell our selves that they deserve it.

President Trump Preparing To Fire Obama's Top Swamp Slug - Duration: 4:57.

President Trump is on a tear these days to weed out those in the swamp who should have

been removed long ago.

He has plenty of slugs to choose from.

The place is literally filled with them.

I still contend they should have been vetted and purged from the various agencies from

the very beginning.

But here we are.

Trump has been asking since last month why Justice Department official Bruce Ohr still

has a job.

He's definitely getting ready to fire Obama's top swamp slug.

The president asked, "how the hell" he is still employed after he testified on Capitol

Hill about his relationship with former British spy Christopher Steele and his ties to the

now infamous anti-Trump dossier.

That's a very good question and I think we would all like an answer to it.

How the hell is Bruce Ohr still employed at the Justice Department?" Trump tweeted.

"Disgraceful!

Witch Hunt!"

Truer words were never spoken in my opinion.

From Fox News in August: "Republicans allege that Ohr played a key

role in selling the so-called Steele dossier, commissioned by the opposition research firm

Fusion GPS and paid for by Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Ohr was grilled over his involvement behind closed doors on Tuesday by the House Oversight

and Judiciary committees "Messages indicate Ohr continued to communicate

with dossier author Steele after the FBI fired him as a source in late 2016 due to his contacts

with the media.

I do not know if it's improper but I want to know who at DOJ knew and it certainly looks

like he continued to meet with Mr. Steele after the FBI had terminated their relationship

with Mr. Steele," Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Fox News ahead of the Tuesday meeting.

"Ohr's wife Nellie worked at Fusion as a Russian specialist and did research that

formed part of the dossier.

"Ohr, who joined the Justice Department in 1991 and eventually was named the associate

deputy attorney general before being demoted amid the investigation into his meetings with

Steele, did not reply to questions shouted by reporters before his hearing on Tuesday.

"At least seven Republican House members traveled to Washington over the August recess

for the interview.

No Democratic lawmakers appeared to attend, though staff were in the room.

Democrats say the entire GOP investigation is an attempt to undermine Special Counsel

Robert Mueller.

They have criticized the Republicans' focus on Ohr as overblown and misleading.

"With Paul Manafort in jail, Michael Cohen in court, and a host of longtime Trump confidants

cooperating with federal prosecutors, we can understand why Republicans are increasingly

desperate to create a distraction and undermine the Department of Justice as a hedge against

what the investigators may find," Reps. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., and Elijah E. Cummings,

D-Md., said Wednesday in a joint statement.

"The two lawmakers added: "Mr. Ohr has already been forced to endure President Trump's

baseless Twitter attacks.

Yesterday's interview was merely a doubling down of that strategy."

Nadler and Cummings serve as ranking members on the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees

respectively."

How the hell is Bruce Ohr still employed at the Justice Department?

Disgraceful!

Witch Hunt!

Trump had previously gone after Ohr and said that it was a "disgrace" for Ohr to be

in the Justice Department and added that he suspects he will "very quickly" revoke

his security clearance.

That tweet, combined with his revoking of the security clearance for former CIA Director

John Brennan, has drawn strong criticism from a number of people in the intelligence community

and raised questions of whether Trump may be obstructing the Mueller investigation.

Trump wants Ohr fired over the Russia investigation and he's also taking swipes at Attorney

General Jeff Sessions over it.

"Will Bruce Ohr, whose family received big money for helping to create the phony, dirty

and discredited Dossier, ever be fired from the Jeff Sessions 'Justice' Department?

A total joke!" Trump tweeted.

Hard to argue with that sentiment.

Will Bruce Ohr, whose family received big money for helping to create the phony, dirty

and discredited Dossier, ever be fired from the Jeff Sessions "Justice" Department?

A total joke!

If Ohr has his security clearance revoked, he will be instantly severely hampered in

doing his job.

Which makes the argument that he should just be fired as President Trump wants.

Ohr was demoted late last year after it was revealed he had contacts with Christopher

Steele who authored the Russia dossier.

Ohr's wife, Nellie, also worked for Fusion GPS during the campaign.

Trump and other Republicans have used those ties to argue the special counsel's Russia

probe is tainted

by bias.
