The U.S. ambassador to South Korea says Seoul's contribution in the Korea-U.S. alliance is
immense,… countering comments made by President-elect Donald Trump.
During an interview with Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency this week, Mark Lippert said Seoul
pays 55 percent of the non-personnel costs of keeping American troops in the country,...
on top of paying 92-to-96-percent of the cost for U.S. base facilities.
He added the defense cost for Korea rises two-to-five percent every year.
Lippert noted the Korea-U.S. alliance will see some changes with the incoming Trump administration,…
but said the countries have built a strong foundation for bilateral relations.
South Korea and the U.S. have long shared the cost of keeping American troops stationed
on the peninsula.
During the campaign period,... Trump said America's allies should pay a larger share
of the defense cost-sharing burden.
