The very forces of clustering and density and knowledge creation that have given rise to the
greatest time of innovation and economic progress in human history are the same forces that
divide us.
That is the contradiction that sits at the heart of the urban crisis.
That is the contradiction of our time.
The very thing that motivates - the reason cities grow, for one fundamental fact that
Jane Jacobs identified 50 years ago in her most important work - well, second most important
work, we'll come in a minute to her most important impression work - The Economy of Cities.
She identified, you know I asked Jane, what do you think was your most fundamental contribution, she
said "Richard, I think I've figured out something that all other economists have overlooked,
including you, is that what really drives economic growth isn't the accumulation of
research and development or technology or economies of scale by corporations.
It's the clustering of talented, diverse groups of people and firms and start-ups in cities."
Well, you know, we were all, I was, maybe not all of us, and I talk in the book about
the "urban optimist" of which I included myself until very recently.
The urban optimist who believed this clustering force was a force for good.
That it was a force for innovation, that its benefits would be widely shared.
How naive was that?
That this clustering force has divided us.
And my wake-up call was not Donald Trump, it was Rob Ford.
You know, I read with great interest, the work of our great colleague here David Hulchanski,
his work on the three cities of Toronto.
There was a middle-class city where boats were rising, where people participated in
industry, where many, many, maybe not everyone, but many of these people's fortunes were rising,
we had stable, middle-class neighborhoods and some time in the past couple of years,
couple of decades, with the rise of the knowledge economy - the urbanized knowledge economy,
I correct myself, it is not a knowledge economy, it is an urbanized knowledge economy where
the cumulative forces of knowledge, it's the packing of knowledge, the clustering of knowledge
in dense, spiky urban centres.
And what David said was, yes, that old Toronto had been eviscerated and replaced by a new
Toronto.
A Toronto of small areas of concentrated advantage in and around the urban core, around transit
spikes, I can add my own, in the United States, around research institutions, knowledge
institutions, areas of coastlines, and amenities, hillsides.
And everyone else was being pushed outside of that.
They were infilling the disadvantaged areas in the city that remained.
They were being pushed out to the peripheral areas of the suburb.
They were being, our cities were being transformed into areas, small areas, of concentrated affluence
and much larger areas of disconnected, concentrated disadvantage.
That produced the backlash which gave us Rob Ford.
That produced the backlash which gave us Brexit.
That produced the backlash which gave us Donald Trump.

- When I first started touring,
I used to tour upwards of 300 days a year,
and the hardest thing about touring then
is just surviving, just doing it,
just driving all night through blizzards
and not getting any sleep
and then setting up all your own stuff
and then repeating it every day.
But, thankfully, at this stage,
it's mainly missing my wife and my dog
is the hardest part of touring.

I had the idea for this orchestral solo project
but I had zero knowledge in writing orchestral music.
So, I was in Las Vegas, then,
recording with another artist,
and a producer named Aaron Johnson,
I asked him if he had any tips for string arranging,
and he's like, "You can't just do string arranging.
"You have to go to school, you have to learn it."
And then, that same very night,
I ended up winning about 1800 bucks
and decided to sign up for Berklee Online
for a Master's Certificate in Orchestration.
So, then, for those two years,
I toured with about a dozen artists
and every week when I would be in the chats for class,
I'd be in a different country, or a different city,
all the time.
Taking orchestration courses was great,
because for Birds in the Airport Live,
I have a string quartet and a couple brass players.
And as far as making them the sheet music,
I wouldn't have had the confidence to know
this is the professional way
to hand someone over a string chart
and when you're playing string players
that's very important to hand them something
they can read right away and perform it on the spot.
Since I'm traveling most of the year,
most of my days, if I have free time,
are spent in a green room, like this,
just with a little MIDI setup,
writing and arranging songs for Birds in the Airport.
Pretty much all the music on my first EP,
How's it Going To End, was done in a green rooms,
and on the second EP, a good amount of it
was written in tour bus lounges and green rooms.
Studying it with Berklee definitely
can keep you sane on tour and keep you focused on something.
