What is a Spinal Cord Injury? - Duration: 3:40.
A spinal cord injury or SCI is a complete or partial damage to the spinal cord that
causes permanent changes in sensation and loss of voluntary control below the site of
injury.
What makes an SCI so traumatic is the fact that it can happen to anyone at any time,
and will severely impact the person's lifestyle.
It has been estimated that there are approximately 282,000 people living with SCI's in the
US, with close to 17,000 new cases of SCIs each year.
The current average age of injury is 42 years and males account for 80% of new SCI cases.
The most common form of SCI with 45% of cases is an incomplete tetraplegia, while the least
common is a complete tetraplegia.
A complete SCI means that there is no sensation below the site of injury.
On the other hand, an incomplete SCI refers to some retention in sensation in the affected
areas of the body.
According to a 2013 analysis of the National SCI Database, the leading causes of SCIs were
automobile crashes and falls.
Following these were gunshot wounds, motorcycle crashes, driving incidents, and medical/surgical
complications.
Altogether, this constitutes 83.1% of SCIs since 2005.
Depending on the location and severity of the injury, the symptoms of SCIs can vary
widely.
Standard symptoms include pain and numbness, inability to move extremities or walk, inability
to feel pressure, heat or cold, muscle spasms, loss of bladder or bowel control, and difficulty
breathing.
There are three regions to the spine: cervical, thoracic and lumbar.
Injuries to each of these areas has different effects.
If the cervical area is damaged, it can be life threatening.
Damage to the cervical area can affect the arms, legs, mod-body, and the ability to breathe.
The higher up the injury occurs, the worse the symptoms.
Damage to the thoracic spine typically affects the legs, pelvic organs and can impact blood
pressure.
Damage to the lumbar spine can affect one or both legs, and may also cause incontinence.
Paralysis of both the arms and legs is referred to as tetraplegia, while paralysis of just
the legs is referred to as paraplegia.
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for a spinal cord injury.
Instead, medical professionals work at restoring what function they can and helping the individual
adapt to their new way of life.
On the site where a spinal cord injury is incurred, emergency personnel will immobilize
the spine using a rigid neck collar and a rigid carrying board.After leaving the hospital,
a patient must adapt to their new way of life, with potential limitations in motor and sensory
control.
For this, they may seek rehabilitation.
This may include physical therapy to help strengthen muscles, assistive devices to aid
with mobility and communication, occupational therapy, vocational therapy, or recreational
therapy.Although there is no cure for spinal cord injuries, there are a number of technologies
being developed which show promise for SCI victims.

It's time for the next part of BTS THEORIES
I analysed 4 short films in the previous videos
There are still 3 left
I hope you will like it
There are many theories and they're really interesting so... Let's start!
Let's start from the 5th short film
Reflection, Rap Monster's short movie
As always, it starts with a quote from Hermann Hesse's book - 'Demian'
The other realm, however,
overlapping half our house,
was completely different;
A loud mixture of horrendous, intriguing, frightful, mysterious things,
including slaughterhouses and prisons, drunkards and screeching fishwives,
calving cows, horses sinking to their death, tales of robberies, murders, and suicides.
When I was looking for some theories online or some particular things I could have missed while watching this short film,
something I didn't notice but someone else did
things that would be helpful in this video
I found many theories that have nothing to do with the book
They are interpreted in a completely different way
It's possible to analyse the connection between the short films and all of the previous BTS videos
And it makes sense
However, reading the book really helps
Because we can find almost all the answers in this book
Or at least most of them
And it's something I highly recommend - if any of you still didn't read the book, just do it!
We can see a storage container at the beginning of the video
It's a storage container that can make us thing about similar containers in 'I need u' MV
Or it's the same storage container which was the place where Rap Monster lived in Run
In the next scene we see Rap Monster holding an envelope
He takes out a picture of a bird from this envelope
Of course, it's a consequence of the first short film - Jungkook's one
because he put that picture into this envelope
Back then, Jungkook was Sinclair, in my opinion
because the scene was exactly like the one from the book - Sinclair sent a picture of a bird to Demian
So we can presume that Rap Monster is Demian
The next scene can also confirm that somehow. Namjoon makes a tattoo of this bird on his forearm
First of all, we can think about the Danger MV because RapMon tattooed himself there as well
Secondly, it reminds me of a scene from the book where Demian was drawing a picture of this bird in his notebook while looking at the crest
One day I saw him standing there, notebook in hand, sketching.
He was drawing the old coat of arms with the bird above our entrance.
As I stood at the window behind the curtain and watched him,
I was deeply astonished by his perceptive, cool, light-skinned face that was turned toward the coat of arms,
the face of a man, of a scientist or artist, superior and purposeful,
strangely lucid and calm, and with knowing eyes.
Rap Monster burns this picture
and it's related to the scene of Jimin burning a paper
But then he puts this burned picture into the glass of strange liquid and he drinks it
And I can show you another quote from the book
Then I thought I could dimly remember that I had burned it.
Or had this been in my dream that I burned it in the palm of my hand and swallowed the ashes?
RapMon falls after drinking this kind of... Poison, let's say
And a quote from No More Dream appears
Who do you see in the mirror?
It can mean that he drank this poison and just like the apple in the Garden of Eden, the poison filled him
This sin and evil filled him
He can't see the same person in the mirror anymore because he sees someone else
Just like Sinclair saw Demian
But I suggest looking into the whole verse of this song
What is the you that you've dreamed of?
Who do you see in the mirror? I gotta say
Go on your path Even if you live for a day
Do something Put away your weakness
The lyrics are very meaningful and they motivate
But for me, it can also be related to the book
Especially the part with your own path and living however you want to
The colors are starting to come out of Namjoon's tattoo
What's interesting - the colors are the same like the ones in Jungkook's short film
Also we can notice quotes from 'Demian' appearing on Rap Monster's forearms
The first one is about the bird and the name Abraxas
which I already mentioned a few times in the previous videos
And here is the next one:
If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself.
What isn't part of ourselves doesn't disturb us.
A broken glass appears, just like in Jungkook's short film
So here we have the connection between the two of them
A writing that says "You have to survive" appears on the mirror
And we could have seen it in Prologue
But Namjoon created this writing back then
and now it appears by itself
More mirrors appear and Rap Monster doesn't want to look into them
like he feels guilty because of something
and he is not able to look into his own eyes
The mirrors suddenly break
which can symbolyze the broken soul
Tearing the soul into pieces by the sins
And we hear a phone calling
Rap Monster starts running to pick up
And we see a phone booth - the same as the one from V's short film
The phone booth is tied in chains so he cannot get inside and pick up the phone
As a result, a writing appears on the phone booth and the writing is... LIAR
It can mean that Rap Monster lied to V
Maybe he promised to help him
But he didn't pick up the phone, he didn't help him, he broke the promise
He's a liar
And he cannot look at his reflection because he feels guilty
Of course, we see Namjoon's logo
And it fuses with Jungkook's logo
I think that the previous short films were more related to Hermann Hesse's book
And the rest of them are mostly related to the previous ones
But they are interested as well so now I'll analyse the 5th one, J-Hope's MAMA
Of course, the film starts with a quote read by Rap Monster
This time it's Eva's description
Demian's mother so we already have a connection to the title
With a face that resembled her son's, timeless, ageless, and full of inner strength,
the beautiful woman smiled with dignity.
Her gaze was fulfillment,
her greeting a homecoming.
Silently I stretched my hands out to her.
The film starts in a white room which resemble a mental hospital or a padded room
It's immaculately white and immaculately clean
We see someone from the hospital filling J-Hope's medical record
And we can notice there Munchausen Syndrome
Munchausen syndrome is a feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma to draw attention, sympathy, or reassurance to themselves.
Mostly people with a personality disorder, masochism tendency or obsession have this Syndrome
We also see 'Placebo' on the medical record
A fake treatment
They give pills to the patient but they don't work because there is no reason for taking them
The patient feels better because the need of being treated in a hospital is fullfilled
It's 1 o'clock and the room is being flooded with pills
When J-Hope takes one pill,
We see a glass of pills, it's the same one as we saw in Jimin's short film
We see J-Hope's eye and a reflection
It's a reflection of a gate or something, the one on which V made a graffiti
And we see a black, dark creature which we saw earlier in V's short film
And a name Abraxas written on this creature
Everything changes suddenly and the room is smutched with a neon paint
It can be related to V making a graffiti
or to Jungkook or Rap Monster because we already saw those colors in their films
We also suddenly see J-Hope with the wings
In a blink of an eye we can notice J-Hope with wings
It can be a connection between J-Hope and Abraxas
We also see a scene of a pillow fight
We see the feathers flying everywhere
It can be related to Run MV
or to Lie where Jimin wanted to start a pillow fight but J-Hope wasn't there...
J-Hope doesn't fight too long and falls
It proves the fact that his Syndrome is neurological
So it's mostly a simulation of such symptoms like
dizziness, epilepsy-like or mental blackout
Which immediately makes us think about the scene from I need u, where J-Hope blackouts
Hoseok wakes up and the room looks a bit more normal
Or at least the colors are not neon
But there is still a colorful paint on the wall
J-Hope stands up and looks through a small window
He sees a taiga painting
The painting from Jimin's short film
He leaves the room and suddenly we find out that it was a storage container
He is now in the same room as Jimin was
We see a scene identical to the one from Lie
J-Hope looks at the painting
Those scenes, J-Hope watching the painting and Jimin watching the painting - they are identical
And then another quote appears, this time from 'I need u'
The sky is blue and the sun is shining
We can relate this quote either to the painting
or to J-Hope's mental freedom
He won, fought the disease
and he will finally the sky and the sun
However, if we look at the next verse of this song
So my tears are even more noticeable
It's becoming less optimistically
Something happens to this film because suddenly it becomes a Snickers commercial
J-Hope takes a Snickers out of his pocket and the pills fall out of it as well
He eats it
And as a result of a sudden dose of endorphines, he smiles and walks away (lol)
Of course, we can say it's because he will live a healthy life from now on
He won't take those pills anymore, he just won
The painting suddenly changes and we already saw it in V's short film
It's a mother with a child and it's signed 'Eva'
So it's probably Eva from Demian
And she was a mother so it explains the title
The logos, both of them, are worth noticing
J-Hope's symbol is the same as the card we saw in Jimin's film, the card with 'Eva' on it
V's symbol is a stigma, a mark
We have to mix them somehow
In my opinion, the only logical connection is the fact that Eva, Demian's mother,
was called a woman with a mark
So Stigma and Eva make a whole
If those two symbols fuse together, we get something that resembles the paint or graffiti
The first proof for this connection is the fact that Sinclair painted Eva, Demian's mother
Demian resembled his mother and Sinclair also saw himself at this painting
And a scene like this you can see in Jungkook's short film; if you don't know what I'm talking about, I suggest you watching previous videos
Somehow... It can make sense
Especially the paint smears
The painting just changes into a mix of colors
If you want more quotes about mother, you have to check the previous videos out because I read many of them there and there was no sense to do it again
So if you want more, just go back
Another thing worth noticing - J-Hope seems kind of lost, like he doesn't know what is happening (also - it's the right part from the short film where you can notice his wings)
He wants to get out, he tries to rip the wallpaper and make anything that will help him get out of there
He also seems possessed
We also could see this scene in WINGS trailer
Besides that, the disease we saw on the medical record,
one of its syndroms is the need of people paying attention to you
And this neon painting and what happens in this room is definitely something that catches attention
What's more, the colors from the room
they are the same as the colors from Jungkook's painting
and also from Namjoon's tattoo
and from V's graffiti
so everything makes a whole
I also thing that this video shows the result of what happened earlier
how J-Hope dealt with it and how he tries to get his life back
and get back to normality
However, as you can see, it's difficult
Also, I think that it was the hardest time for Jimin and J-Hope
because it clearly is the same mental hospital
But what would this video be without quotes from 'Demian', I think you really like them
So I found two examples for you!
I now lived within a fire of unsatisfied longing, of tense expectancy that often drove me completely wild.
I often saw the beloved apparition of my dream with a clarity greater than life, more distinct than my own hand,
spoke with it, wept before it, cursed it.
I called it mother and knelt down in front of it in tears.
I called it my beloved and had a premonition of its ripe all-fulfilling kiss.
I called it devil and whore, vampire and murderer.
Everything pointed toward vastness and space - it all pointed toward Abraxas.
But none of these dreams, none of these thoughts obeyed me,
none were at my beck and call, I could color none of them as I pleased.
They came and took me, I was ruled by them, was their vessel.
Especially the part about colors was meaningful and I hope those two quotes were useful!
These was the next two short films and I hope you liked it!
There were not so many symbols as in the previous videos
and also less connections to the book

- The one thing that's really going to boost your confidence
is knowing what lies ahead.
And that really is just a case of scanning everything
that's in front of you.
It's simple, but it's amazing.
How many people only look at the patch of road
immediately in front of their front wheel?
Or if they know the road already, they just flick the switch
to autopilot.
Doing either of those things is going to mean
that you can't anticipate what's coming up.
The faster you go, the further ahead you'll want to look.
Keep an eye on the direction of the road,
the quality of the road surface, and then moveable hazards
like cars and pedestrians.
Know when you need to slow down, what line you should take,
what other people might do, will all give you time to react,
and that could make the difference between
safe and nervous descending.
So we know where we're going, and we know that we can react
in good time to where the hazards may lay ahead.
But what about how we actually ride our bikes?
- Firstly, although not essential, a lot of riders
are going to benefit from having their hands down here
on the drops when they're descending.
It's gonna be more stable.
You're less likely to have your hands slip off if you happen
to hit a pothole or something in the road.
Plus you've got great access to the brakes, and you can
pull them with greater force if you happen to need to.
- You'll probably find that not reaching as far forward
also makes steering the bike easier.
Although your hands will be lower on the drops,
this is offset by how much less you need to reach.
The final key descending skill is braking.
You can't go down hill with confidence without the ability
to slow down quickly.
- Yeah, and remember that your front brake
is the most effective.
It's this one that's going to slow you down the quickest.
And all you've got to do to compensate for the fact
that your body will naturally thrust forward
is to push your body weight back.
In fact, the harder you brake,
the further back you need to be.
- Let's go!

Our last word on this subject is that braking should be done
in a straight line.
Steering and braking at the same time is just bad news.
- Yeah, if you pull either brake too much
in the middle of a corner,
you're going to risk locking one of your wheels up,
in which case you're gonna see your bike sliding away
from underneath you.

Standard symptoms include pain and numbness, inability to move extremities or walk, inability
to feel pressure, heat or cold, muscle spasms, loss of bladder or bowel control, and difficulty
breathing.
There are three regions to the spine: cervical, thoracic and lumbar.
Injuries to each of these areas has different effects.
If the cervical area is damaged, it can be life threatening.
Damage to the cervical area can affect the arms, legs, mod-body, and the ability to breathe.
The higher up the injury occurs, the worse the symptoms.
Damage to the thoracic spine typically affects the legs, pelvic organs and can impact blood
pressure.
Damage to the lumbar spine can affect one or both legs, and may also cause incontinence.
Paralysis of both the arms and legs is referred to as tetraplegia, while paralysis of just
the legs is referred to as paraplegia.
Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for a spinal cord injury.
Instead, medical professionals work at restoring what function they can and helping the individual
adapt to their new way of life.
On the site where a spinal cord injury is incurred, emergency personnel will immobilize
the spine using a rigid neck collar and a rigid carrying board.After leaving the hospital,
a patient must adapt to their new way of life, with potential limitations in motor and sensory
control.
For this, they may seek rehabilitation.
This may include physical therapy to help strengthen muscles, assistive devices to aid
with mobility and communication, occupational therapy, vocational therapy, or recreational
therapy.Although there is no cure for spinal cord injuries, there are a number of technologies
being developed which show promise for SCI victims.

The visitor center at the Hatfield Marine Science Center
in Newport is a place where the public
can learn about fascinating marine animals.
This video shows how aquarists care
for the animals at the visitors center, which is
operated by Oregon Sea Grant.
This video contains six segments,
starting with a behind the scenes tour of our area
where new and sick animals are quarantined and treated.
Other segments showcase how aquarists feed the animals,
take care of the octopus on display,
care for and propagate coral, and clean the tanks.

The holding area, known as the West Wing,
is where we quarantine new animals
and treat sick ones at the visitors center.
Quarantining is necessary to prevent disease in the wild
from being introduced into our tanks.
It also gives our animals time to acclimate
to their new environment.
We receive assistance from Doctor Tim Miller Morgan,
an aquatic veterinarian who oversees Oregon Sea Grant's
aquatic animal health program
The West Wing is also where we keep animals Doctor Tim Miller
Morgan uses for teaching purposes
at Oregon State University's College of Veterinary Medicine
and in the aquarium science program at Oregon Coast
Community College.
Students learn to examine these animals, some of which
have been donated.
They also learn to diagnose and treat diseases.
We also raise baby fish, such as shiner perch and pipe
fish in the West Wing, so we can later put them on display
and also avoid collecting them from the wild.
When shiner perch are born, they are big enough
to eat the same foods that we feed the adults.
Baby pipe fish, on the other hand, are much smaller
and require extremely tiny live foods.
So in the West Wing, we grow brine shrimp and rotifers,
two microscopic types of zooplankton
that we feed algae, which are full of nutrients.
After a mysterious disease began decimating sea stars
along the Oregon coast in 2014, we
built a tank in the West Wing to give our sea stars
a safe refuge.
Our tanks on public display in the visitor's center
get their water from Yaquina Bay.
So if there's a problem with the water,
like temperature fluctuations or the presence of disease,
those problems can enter the tanks
and potentially harm the animals.
However, the tank in the West Wing area
has a closed recirculating filtration and chilling system,
which keeps the water self-contained, clean,
and at a constant temperature.
We test the water quality in the tank weekly
and observe the sea stars in it daily.
Whenever we hear that sea stars in the Yaquina Bay are dying,
or if we see signs of stress in our own population on display,
we transfer our sea stars out of our public exhibits
to this tank in the back.
This keeps them from being exposed to the water in the bay
and it allows them to build up their immune systems.
Once water conditions appear steady,
we put them back on display.
As you can see at the visitors, center,
the health of our animals comes first.

Many visitors are surprised to know
that we feed our marine life restaurant quality seafood.
This is because we are dedicated to providing
the best nutrition possible to the animals at the visitors
center.
We prepare their meals in our food prep room
and customize them to meet their needs.
For example, an adult Rockfish, a giant Pacific octopus,
a pipe fish, and a yellow tang, all have different diets.
Larger animals receive squid, fish, shrimp, and crab,
that we cut into bit-sized pieces.
Animals with small mouths are fed small krill, shrimp, fish,
and worms.
Even our filter feeders get specialty
made diets, some of which come from our own live culture area
in the West Wing of the center.
There, we grow brine shrimp and rotifers,
offers, which are microscopic zooplankton that can easily
be consumed by your filter feeding coral, mussel,
or anemone.
And let's not forget about the herbivores.
Animals like yellow tangs, sea urchin, and chitons,
are grazers and do best with lots of vegetation
in their diet.
We feed these animals seaweed, as well as lettuce, broccoli,
and cucumbers.
We also prepare a dedicated food by mixing
powdered or liquid vitamins and medications with water
and letting the mixture harden overnight.
When we feed our animals, we have
to make sure the food is getting to them.
Our juvenile big skates, for example,
are in the tank with multiple rockfish and sculpins,
all of which are faster swimmers than the skates.
To help the skates get to their food first,
we use a feeding pole that has a plastic lid attached
to the end of it and food on a skewer in front of the lid.
The skate swims to the lid because they have been
trained to recognize its shape.
We have also trained our rat fish and moray eel
to eat from feeding poles.
This is often referred to as target feeding.
As you can see at the visitors center,
the health of our animals comes first.

Octopuses are incredibly smart animals
that need to be stimulated and properly taken care of.
How do we do that at the visitors center?
It starts with the environment the octopus lives in.
An exhibit tank is not a natural home for an octopus,
but if we can make it as much like the wild as possible,
these curious animals who want to explore the tank more
frequently.
Our tank includes multiple rock formations
populated by the same kinds of anemones and sea stars
the octopus would encounter in its ocean environment.
When visiting our facility, you may notice different toys
in the octopus tank.
We introduce new toys often, mixing
a variety of textures and sizes in order
to engage our octopus through interactive stimuli.
Toys are also a great way to allow the octopus to interact
with our staff.
One toy we have found to be entertaining is a watering can.
It seems they enjoy the feeling of the water being
poured over them like a shower.
Another way we can stimulate our octopus
is by varying the diet our octopus receives,
as well as how it is delivered.
We place the food in a container,
giving the octopus a chance to hunt for the container
and then figure out how to open it.

up to three days a week, either in person
or via our live streaming cameras.

You may think of corals as rocks,
but they're actually animals with stomachs, mouths,
and tentacles.
Just like other aquatic animals, they
need to be properly taken care of to survive.
We monitor their lighting, water, water chemistry,
and nutrition to ensure that the corals grow
into colorful colonies.
That means making sure that the symbiotic algae
living inside the tissue of the corals are healthy.
The algae, called zooxanthellae, provide the striking colors
we see in corals.
Like plants, these algae get their energy
from light in a process known as photosynthesis.
So we place LED lights above each tropical exhibit
to provide the algae with the wavelength of light
they need to thrive.
Water flow is also important.
It delivers oxygen and microscopic food to the corals
and removes waste.
On a coral reef, water flow is constantly
changing due to the weather, tides, and other factors.
In our coral exhibit, we circulate
the water using pumps that are mounted
to the inside of the tank.
They provide the shifting, swirling currents
that corals need to grow and remain healthy.
Nutritional supplements are also essential to the coral's
survival.
We feed our corals calcium, amino acids,
and other vital elements to build their skeletons.
We also feed them small live food
such as rotifers and phytoplankton on a daily basis.
Diligent monitoring, care, and maintenance
are essential when it comes to the survival
and growth of all corals.

Our coral fragmentation exhibit shows
corals that have been propagated in captivity.
Behind the scenes, we keep small colonies
of corals, which grow until they are ready to go on display.
Coral fragmentation is important because it
allows hobbyists and professionals to grow and share
their own corals instead of collecting wild corals
from reefs around the world.
The process of fragmenting corals
involves gently cutting a small piece from a larger coral.
Once the cut has been made, we glue the fragment
to a ceramic disk, which makes a sturdy base.
Super glue is a nice deal adhesive
because it does not harm the corals and hardens under water.
Most coral colonies grow around two centimeters a year,
but under ideal conditions, some corals
can grow 10 centimeters or more per year.
With the correct care and maintenance,
these small coral fragments will continue to grow and thrive
in their aquarium environment.

Just like our own homes, fish tanks
accumulate dirt and must be cleaned regularly.
To clean the walls of the tanks, we
must use a special scrubbing pad that does not
scratch the acrylic sides.
To reach the bottom of our larger exhibits,
we attach the pads to long poles.
The rock and the sand at the bottom of our tanks
is a place where detritus and dirt can accumulate.
To remove this, we use a gravel vacuum.
This apparatus, also used in home aquariums,
is a hose attached to a larger rigid tube.
As water flows through the tube, suction tumbles the rocks
and removes the dirt.
The wastewater then goes down the drain.
After we have cleaned an exhibit,
we clean and sanitize all the tools
before they are used in another tank
to prevent the spread of disease.
If there is a disease in one tank,
it can easily be spread from tank
to tank on the cleaning tools.
To prevent this, we use a chemical
called virkon, which is used throughout the animal care
industry.
After that, we soak our tools and another chemical
called sodium thiosulfate to neutralize the virkon
before using the tools again.
The result-- clean tools, clean tanks,
and happy, healthy animals.
