We're in Shanghai, the city known
for its epic skyline, extravagant shopping
and world-famous dumplings. Let's eat!
So today we'll be trying some
of the most famous dumplings in Shanghai.
Now the city is known for its soupy xiaolongbao
but we'll be trying a lot more.
We'll be tasting a range of different dumplings
from different spots to find out
which are the best in town.
I can't wait!
This is Jia Jia Tang Bao, one of the best places
if not the best place apparently
to have xiaolongbao in Shanghai.
They specialize in pork and crab xiaolongbao
and today we got four choices.
We got the pure pork dumplings for 18 Yuan
Then we got the pork and shrimp for 28 Yuan
pork and crab for 35 Yuan, and last but not least
we got these massive double sized
pure crab xiaolongbao for 50 yuan.
These are a bit trickier than your average dumplings.
What you do, you dip it in the vinegar sauce
you bite the side, drink the soup
and then eat the whole thing.
These are amazing. The skin, or the dough
and the pork ratio is honestly perfect.
Alright next, we got this pork and shrimp dumplings.
I've never had this combination before.
I have to say, I feel like it just
adds a tiny bit of seafood flavor
to the usual pork dumplings and a bit of crunchiness.
Hopefully not from the shell.
So now we got this pork and crab and look at the color.
You can just see the crab dominating this dumpling.
Can feel like, a powdery kind of crab
cause in Chinese, it is "crab powder".
Feels very seafoody and you kind of loose the pork in it.
But this one's a perfect balance.
Alright now, we've got the pure crab dumplings.
These massive, massive dumplings.
Wow, this is full on so much soup.
Each dumpling is like a bowl of soup in itself.
I'm literally just drinking soup.
These were all so amazing, but I gotta say,
this pork and crab is my winner for the day.
Gonna have one more and then on to the next place.
So just like Jia Jia Tang Bao
Yang's usually has a line and they're known for
one of the best fried dumplings in Shanghai.
These are shengjianbao. They're kind of like
the pan fried version of xiaolongbao
but the cooking process leaves them with
a crispy bottom but still soft at the top.
Today, I've got three different types.
We've got pure pork, shrimp, and veggie pork.
Let's try them!
So good! When you bite into it, more soup
keeps coming out from the meat, from the filling.
This is a hell of a dumpling.
Alright, next up we've got the shrimp shengjianbao.
I didn't think I would like this one cause
I'm not so much of a pure shrimp dumpling kinda person.
There's still some kind of, like, porkish flavor to it.
But this has really surprised me.
Alright, last but not least, we've got this
veggie pork and they are differentiated
by the color of the sesame.
So this one's got black and white sesame.
Although it has pork in this one
I'd say that the vegetable overtakes it a bit more.
It's not bad.
This is Ling Long Fang, another famous xiaolongbao spot.
And it's a good place to go if
you're keen to try different flavors.
You get 12 of each and today we got
this pure pork xiaolongbao for 16 Yuan
then we got these massive pure crab xiaolongbao.
99 Yuan you get two boxes.
Then last but not least we got
the egg and pork. This is 24 Yuan.
So, let's try them.
Gonna grab the pure pork one first.
This is super juicy. The skin is not too thick
so everything is really balanced and really good.
Next lets try this massive pure crab xiaolongbao.
The crab flavor is so strong, and while you eat
more soup comes out for some reason. It's good.
For the last dumpling, the pretty special flavored one.
The egg and pork. You can really see the
egg yolk colors coming out. It's quite pretty.
You get the flavor of the salty egg.
It's definitely strong, so, if you want some
variety from the original pork xiaolongbao
try the different flavors. This egg and pork one
is definitely really really good.
I'm gonna have another one.
So, Wan Shou Zhai is another xiaolongbao spot
but it's a bit different from the other places.
They have been around since 1949.
They used to be state owned, but
10 years ago they got privatized.
They also do their xiaolongbao a little bit different here.
As you can see they are a little bit smaller in size
so they come in 16 per full basket
and it's only 14 Yuan.
Which is a ridiculous price for this amount of dumplings.
This one is the pork meat with a bit of sugar
and ...yeah. Less talking, more eating. Let's go.
The first bite, all the soup just comes out.
This is so, so juicy and don't let the size fool you
definitely lot of soup, a lot of meat in there.
I'd say the skin is a bit more on the
doughy side, it's a bit thicker.
For this amount and the price this is amazing.
This is Dong Tai Xiang. You can get
their famous fried shengjianbao 24/7.
So, feel like it during breakfast? You can come here.
Got a craving after a night out? You can come here.
This is only eight yuan for four massive shengjianbao.
Pure pork shengjianbao. Let's give it a try.
Not much soup action going on, but the top is a lot softer.
I feel like I'm biting on a man tao
like a bready, very soft kinda top.
I feel like it's not a soupy and juicy as Yang's one
but for the size and for the price
this is definitely a good deal.
So, all the dumplings I tried today
were amazing and were such a good deal.
But if I were to pick my favorite
I gotta say I can't stop thinking about the
xiaolongbao at Jia Jia Tang Bao.
I mean, there's nothing I can complain about.
They were so perfect. The sauce went
so well with the pork dumplings.
And their crab one was really good too
even though I normally don't like that flavor.
I can't think about food anymore though.
I've eaten so much. I've got a food coma.
I'm ready for a nap.
