What's so great about America??
If you listen to some liberals, they will tell you, America is the problem.
And there isn't a day that goes by in which a news anchor or celebrity
doesn't tell us what's inherently wrong with America
Too much systemic racism, patriarchy, oppression, and unfairness, etc. etc.
Some even go on to say, we need to fundamentally change America
bring in new ideas, from say, Europe, and progress from our Americanism.
You see, it's funny when I hear Americans say things like this
because as an immigrant to this country, I feel the complete opposite.
And I'm tired of hearing liberals bash America
for the very things that have made this country great.
Look, I've experienced communism.
I was born in China.
And I've experienced some socialism.
I grew up in New Zealand.
But since moving to America at the age of 18, I have never looked back.
And while I value my Chinese and Kiwi upbringing,
I know that America is special and like no other nation on earth.
So here are some anti-American myths I'd like to dispel
Number 1: They say, America is so racist, it is seething with "systemic racism"
Hey, I don't deny slavery and Jim Crow laws have tainted America's history.
But that's in the past.
And even throughout her entire history, America has been a welcoming country.
If America is so racist, why has America become the melting pot of the world?
Why has America become home to people of all nations, creeds, and religions?
Whereas most countries are based on race, ethnicity, or religion, American isn't.
If America is so racist, why are her founding documents based on a set of ideals?
the rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness
and as long as you accept these ideals
anyone, no matter what race you are, can become an American.
Number 2: They say, America is full of discrimination
if it's not against your race, it's against your gender or foreigners or your religion.
Sorry, not true.
My aunt, like so many other foreigners, came to this country with nothing
no money and not even the ability to speak English.
As a Chinese, female, non-Christian immigrant, she made her American dream happen
through hard work and perseverance.
America is not full of insurmountable discrimination as some say.
That is, unless you see yourself as a perpetual victim.
Number 3: They say, America is so oppressive, it's oppressed people all over the world.
Well, on the flip side, America helped save the world
from fascism in World War I and II.
America saved South Korea from communism
so that today, it is a thriving nation of freedom
while communist North Korea languishes in unbearable oppression.
Quite frankly, there is no country on earth that has given more of its resources
and sacrificed even her own soldiers to protect people in other nations.
And today, whenever there's a world crisis, like a tsunami or earthquake
in some distant part of the world
America is usually the first to rush in and provide humanitarian assistance.
Number 4: They say, America is too much of a capitalist country
we need to be more socialist, like Europe.
Sorry, socialist countries in Europe, like Greece
are being bankrupt for their programs.
There aren't enough citizens to pay for their overblown governments.
And their "free" healthcare system
people are dying while waiting for months for basic tests like MRIs.
And the state gets to decide whether you live or die
because there isn't enough "free" healthcare to go around.
And saying that we have too much capitalism
is like saying we have too much freedom
to pursue our dreams and start our own businesses.
It's like saying we hate our iPhones, our Costcos, and Amazon
and we want our hospitals to be run like the DMV.
No thank you.
And lastly, number 5: What frustrates me the most is when some liberals tell us
the founding fathers have become irrelevant.
Their ideas are no longer compatible with America's "progress".
Are you kidding me?
The idea that we are endowed by our Creator
with certain inalienable rights was revolutionary.
The preeminence of "We, the People" in making decisions
about our own government was revolutionary.
The emphasis on freedom - freedom of speech, religion, assembly, and the press,
and freedom from government, to be able to pursue our own destiny,
was a true step in human progress.
Compared to other nations, America is exceptional
precisely because of our founding fathers' vision for America.
It is precisely because of these ideals that have made America great.
So here's my message to you.
There is more to be grateful for in this country than many Americans realize.
Yes, we need to learn from other countries, but at the same time
we should value what has made America who she is.
And perhaps, as some patriots has said, we need to rediscover Americanism.
We need to reclaim that part of our heritage that made us great in the first place.
So America, please, don't stop being American
In fact, be more American in all your goodness and uniqueness
that has set you apart from the rest of the world.
And may God continue to bless America and make this nation great again.
