Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger: 'It's a dream come true'

For Antonio Rudiger, the transfer to Chelsea represents a welcome milestone on his long road back from serious injury. It comes with a sense of destiny.

He had been close to moving to Stamford Bridge last year when he damaged knee ligaments in training with Germany ahead of Euro 2016.

He was robbed of the biggest moment in his career when forced out of the tournament in France but the £32million move from Roma to London was able to be revived. 'A dream come true,' he admits.

Also, an escape from the racism which he found impossible to ignore in Italian football, speaking out with courage and eloquence.

'You feel alone,' said Rudiger, reflecting from Singapore on one of Serie A's big problems and the extremes of emotion he endured in the last 12 months.

Antonio Rudigers transfer to Chelsea is a milestone on his long road back from serious injury.

'I can keep my focus but people love to say, 'Stay calm' or 'Don't do anything'. It is easy for you to say those things when you are not black and you never feel what it is like.

You cannot even put yourself in my position of how that feels. In that moment it is like this and you are alone. You have to be strong. Each human is different.

Someone takes it and doesn't react, others react. I can understand both.'.

Having been racially abused by Lazio's Senad Lulic last season, Rudiger refused to stay silent about the problems in Serie A and called on the authorities to do more to wipe it out. Bosnian Lulic was fined and banned for 20 days.

'Not all Italian people are racist,' says Rudiger, pictured with Inter coach Luciano Spalletti. 'Not all Italian people are racist,' said Rudiger.

'For me, I just want justice. I want FIFA or the FA in Italy just to suspend those people who do that.

If we always talk about racism in Italy, people think that all Italians are racist people — and it is not like that.

I just mean those specific people who do that. It is not all. But those people need to be banned from the stadium or fined.'.

Rudiger had been close to moving to Stamford Bridge last year when he damaged his knee. Rudiger has been with his new Chelsea team-mates since Tuesday, joining late for pre-season after international duty in the Confederations Cup.

He made his first appearance on Saturday in a friendly against Inter Milan.

'Of course, it's a dream to be here,' he said. 'I always wanted to play here in the Premier League and it is many years since my name was first linked to Chelsea.'.

Rudiger made his first appearance on Saturday in a friendly against Inter Milan in Singapore.

Asked whether he would have moved last summer without the injury, he said: 'You never know, maybe. ' He certainly missed the chance to perform in the Euros. It could have been the biggest moment of my career,' he said.

'At that moment it was sad. I knew then that I had to work to get stronger. And this is what happened. I believe in God and everything has its time.

So one year later I won the Confederations Cup and one year later I'm at Chelsea. I'm very happy and want to thank all the people that made this come true.'.

Rudiger has called his £32 million move from Roma to Stamford Bridge 'a dream come true'.

Rudiger, 24, was born in Berlin after his mother fled the civil war in Sierra Leone. He joined the youth ranks at Borussia Dortmund, where his half-brother Sahr Senesie started his career, before moving to Stuttgart.

Like Senesie, he played up front in his youth and idolised Thierry Henry.

'I was not a tall guy, I was small,' said Rudiger. 'I used to play on the wings or as a striker but that changed at the age of 16. I started to grow. The coach moved me into defence.'.

His physique and athleticism ought to be great assets in the English game and his versatility, able to operate at centre-half or full-back, will be valued by manager Antonio Conte.

'I have no experienced the Premier League yet but the Italian league is more tactical,' said Rudiger. 'You don't have the open games as you do in England with both teams attacking the whole time.

Having been racially abused by Lazio's Senad Lulic last season Rudiger refused to stay silent.

Rudiger is already working hard for his new club as the 2017-18 season fast approaches. 'That is the main two differences between the two leagues and, of course, the physical aspect in England.

You need to prepare for a physical game. There are a lot strikers, Jamie Vardy and Romelu Lukaku, where you look at them and it is a challenge.'.

Conte will prepare him well. Chelsea players are calling the defender Rudi and he added: 'It was a very warm welcome, very respectful.

It has only been a few days really but it is very good. I'm looking forward to working, working, working..

WW3 looms as US considers 'military response' to North Korea missile test

The Pentagon said that the ICBM flew just 1,000km before it landed in Japans Exclusive Economic Zone, with officals fearing it hit boats.

The ICBM test – the second in weeks – came just 24 hours after a top US general said time is running out to find a diplomatic solution to the North Korea nuclear crisis.

Now it appears Americas patience has run out with three US defence officals discussing military response options, according to Reuters. In an emergency phone call, South Korean President Moon Jae-in called for talks on beefing up defence missiles systems.

General Joseph Dunford and Admiral Harry Harris, head of US Pacific Command, spoke with South Korean joint chief of staff, General Lee Sun-jin, shortly after the test.

A spokesman for Mr Dunford said: During the call Dunford and Harris expressed the ironclad commitment to the US-Republic of Korea alliance. The three leaders also discussed military response options.

Tonight Yonhap News Agency has reported that the US will stage a joint ballistic missile exercise in response to North Koreas ICBM launch.

The launch happened 11. 41pm local time (3. 11pm UK) and lasted 45 minutes. The Pentagon confirmed it has detected what it assesses was a ballistic missile launch.

Initially it was thought the missile travelled more than 3,000km – the distance between North Korea and US territory.

But a statement from the Pentagon later confirmed that the missile – thought to be capable of reaching US shores – was onlt fired 1,000km.

Japan have slammed the test as a clear violation of UN resolutions, confirming the missile landed in its waters. https://www. dailystar. uk/news/latest-news/633393/north-korea-fire-missile-us-military-response#.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the threat is grave and real as he prepared to hold an emergency summit with his ministers. The countrys chief cabinet secretary has said Japan absolutely cannot tolerate North Koreas repeated provocations.

US Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis said: "I can confirm that we detected a launch of a ballistic missile from North Korea. "We are assessing and will have more information soon.

The South Korean president has ordered an emergency security meeting following the Norths 14th missile test this year. Fears of an imminent test has been heightened in recent days after the dictator hadnt been seen for 15 days.

But yesterday Kim came out of hiding to visit a cemetary and mark the 64th anniversary of the end of the Korean war. One theory suggested the test was due to take place yesterday, but was postponed due to rain.

Pyongyang successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for the first time on July 4 – American Independence Day.

That test was the latest in a series conducted in defiance of a United Nations ban, with experts saying it could reach Alaska.

Later it was suggested an even further developed missile could wipe out the likes of Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

The Hermit Kingdom has become notorious for marking key events in its history with missile launches or threats of a new world war.

The most recent warning was issued by one of Kim Jong-un's key generals, who called on the Norths military to "wage dynamic struggle to bring final victory".

US says North Korea fired missile into Japanese waters - north korean leader - Duration: 6:40.

US says North Korea fired missile into Japanese waters

North Korea has fired an intermediate range missile in the direction of Japan, US military officials said.

The land-based missile was fired from near Panghyon airfield, and flew for 37 minutes before landing in the Sea of Japan, said the US Pacific Command.

Japan has lodged a protest and PM Shinzo Abe said the launch clearly shows that the threat has grown. Pyongyang has increased the frequency of its nuclear and missile tests in recent months, raising tensions.

South Korea said Tuesdays projectile was launched at 09:40 local time (00:40 GMT) and flew about 930km (578 miles). The missile may have landed in waters claimed by Japan as its exclusive economic zone, according to Japanese officials.

The US said it did not pose a threat to North America. Meanwhile Pyongyang is due to make an important announcement later on Tuesday, reported South Koreas Yonhap news agency.

North Korea last test-launched missiles in May. It fired projectiles on two separate occasions, both towards the Sea of Japan.

While Pyongyang has appeared to have made progress, experts believe North Korea does not have the capability to accurately target a place with an intercontinental ballistic missile or miniaturise a nuclear warhead that can fit on such a missile.

The big question - by Stephen Evans, BBC News, Seoul.

The big question is: What range does this missile have - could it hit the US? One expert already thinks that it might be able to reach Alaska but not the lower states.

David Wright, a physicist with the US-based Union of Concerned Scientists, said: If the reports are correct, that same missile could reach a maximum range of roughly 6,700km (4,160 miles) on a standard trajectory.

That range would not be enough to reach the lower 48 states or the large islands of Hawaii, but would allow it to reach all of Alaska.

Its not just a missile that North Korea would need, but also the ability to protect a warhead from the intense heat and vibration as it re-enters the atmosphere, and its not clear if North Korea can do that.

On the prospect of North Korea being able to strike the US, President Donald Trump tweeted in January: It wont happen. The truth is that it might - most experts think within five years, probably less. What would President Trump do then?.

Japans Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Tuesday: North Koreas repeated provocations like this are absolutely unacceptable. Mr Abe said Japan would unite strongly with the US and South Korea to put pressure on Pyongyang.

He added that he would call on Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin - who are meeting in Moscow - to play a more constructive role.

US President Donald Trump also responded swiftly on Tuesday to the missile launch. On his Twitter account he made apparent reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying: Does this guy have anything better to do with his life?.

Hard to believe that South Korea and Japan will put up with this much longer. Perhaps China will put a heavy move on North Korea and end this nonsense once and for all!.

Mr Trump had earlier called Mr Kim a pretty smart cookie. He has also repeatedly called on Mr Xi to pressure North Korea to end its nuclear and missile programmes. Beijing is Pyongyangs closest economic ally.

The latest missile launch comes a day after Mr Trump spoke on the phone separately with Mr Xi and Mr Abe about North Korea. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a denuclearised Korean Peninsula.

In South Korea, recently-elected President Moon Jae-in has called for an emergency meeting of the countrys security council. Mr Moon also met with US President Donald Trump last week, with the US leader warning Pyongyang of a determined response.

The US recently started setting up its controversial Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (Thaad) system in South Korea, which is aimed at protecting against North Korean missiles.

Neighbours such as China have objected to it as they believe it undermines their security and the regional balance. On Tuesday, Mr Xi and Mr Putin reiterated their opposition to Thaad, reported Chinese state news agency Xinhua. Graphic: NK missile ranges compared.

Europe on ALERT: Earthquake rocks Iceland's biggest volcano as it prepares to BLOW - Duration: 3:09.

Europe on ALERT: Earthquake rocks Iceland's biggest volcano as it prepares to BLOW

READY TO BLOW: The Katla volcano is Icelands most powerful. The Katla volcano is now on yellow alert after a 3-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the early hours of this morning.

The quake was followed by smaller tremors, and coincided with a glacial flood at a nearby river – potentially caused by rising lava.

Roads have now been shut in the area surrounding the river and volcano amid fears of an imminent eruption of the country's most powerful volcano.

DANGEROUS: Katla has a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of between 4 and 6 on a scale of 0 to 8.

Earlier this month, a volcano researcher who studies Iceland's volcanoes told Daily Star Online "an eruption might happen in the next few weeks or months".

Jon Frimann, who is also the author behind website Iceland Volcano Reports, explained: Earthquake activity is increasing in Katla There is no way to know for sure (however) when a volcano is going to erupt.

It might be possible with a few hours warning. In the case of Katla that window is from one hour up to eight hours as an eruption happens after a strong earthquake swarm in the volcano..

Seven years ago Iceland's massive Eyjafjallajökull erupted and spewed a choking veil of ash across Europe. The deadly volcanic dust wiped out skies and grounded 100,000 flights, resulting in the economy losing £4 billion.

Should an eruption of Katla take place, it's possible there could be a repeat.

David Pyle, a volcanologist at Oxford University's Earth Sciences department, said: "The reason Eyjafjallajökull caused so much disruption across northern Europe was because of the unusual way that the low-level winds blew the ash from Iceland towards the south and over a few days.

The same thing could happen again – with the right combination of eruption size (not too big, not too small), and weather systems." Katla stands tall at 1,512 metres, and once erupted every 50 years right up until 1918.

But despite an almost 100-year lull, research shows it is now waking up, and – coupled with the latest activity – it is at its closest to blowing.
