Hi, I'm Daniel Smith, Southwest regional specialists for the Nutrient and Pest
Management Program for the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today we're
modifying a no-till drill to interseed cover crops at the v5 v6 growth stage of
corn. We have our 10 foot no-till drill out here in the field and what we're
trying to do is we're measuring our row spacing of our drill to see what rows we
should remove to modify the drill. It's an in wheel drill so we've decided that
we should remove the second row, this row that's over the corn stalks, these two in
the middle, and then the second row again on the side. That way we don't damage the
corn as we interseed our cover crops. That will allow us to intercede three
rows of cover crops in between our corn rows. Our corn is spaced at 30 inches.
We've come back out to the field after modifying the drill we've taken off our
necessary rows off from the drill and we've also calibrated the drill so
that we would feed our proper rates of cover crops. As you can see we can seed
three roads of cover crops without damaging the corn with the other row
units, and our end wheel on our drill nicely fits between the rows as well
without damaging the corn. For more information please contact your local
County Extension Office or visit the Nutrient Pest Management program's
website.
