Hi, everybody. This is Dylan Robertson and
you have tuned into the Daily D. - my vlog.
Thank you for stopping by. I am
celebrating the completion of a large
project. It took me about a year.
I migrated two of my websites from
WordPress to Medium. WordPress is
free software and you can put it on your
own server. That means you rent a
place for it to live and you can build
almost any kind of website or blog you
can imagine. One of the appealing
things with WordPress is the freedom that
you have. You can control everything.
The downside is you have to maintain the
website. You have to constantly be
updating it, and you really do need quite
a bit of technical knowledge. If not,
you need to have the money to hire a web
developer and perhaps a web designer to
make it look good and run smoothly.
To cut a long story short, it's not for
everybody. For a one-person operation
like mine, it was just too much.
I discovered Medium.com. If you're
familiar with Medium, you might think of
it as just a place where you can easily
write an article. It's easy to use.
It's so simple.
But, you may not be familiar with their
program for publishers. On Medium,
there are "Publications." If you want
more information, check out
publishers.medium.com. It's 100%
free to host your site on there.
If your old side was hosted on
WordPress, there's
actually a way you can
import all your content
across. It's amazing and I'm so happy
that I made the move. Medium is a
thousand times easier to use.
It's so much simpler.
It's a beautifully well-designed piece
of software. It's the new generation
of everything. While I respect
what people in the WordPress community
have done, it was just not for me. I
still think WordPress has its uses.
There are so many things you can do with
WordPress. There are certain
situations where you really do want to
have 100% control over everything.
If you want to have that level of
independence, you don't want to be
building your platform, your content
repository, on so-called rented land.
That's the downside of Medium. It is
essentially a hybrid between a blogging
platform and social network. Just like
Facebook, Twitter, and so on,
it's controlled by somebody else. You
can't just post anything and everything
on there. They have a Terms of Service.
They can, and will, delete your stuff if
it breaks the rules.
Thankfully, my content is very safe.
I don't think I'm ever going to cross
any lines or break any rules.
So, it's been a great win for me.
It allows me to just focus on the
content. If you've ever wrestled with
WordPress and then come across to Medium
and experience the difference, you'll
know exactly what I'm talking about.
It's saving me time, saving me money,
and I'm really enjoying working with
Medium. If anyone at Medium is watching,
a big thank you! Cheers!
