>>> SO EVERY OCTOBER,
EVERYTHING TURNS PINK TO
EMPHASIZE THE FIGHT AGAINST
BREAST CANCER.
DOESN'T SEEM LIKE EVERYBODY,
EVERY BUSINESS AND SPORT TEAM
PARTICIPATES?
>> YES, THE MONTH COMES AND
GOES.
UNFORTUNATELY, THE SAME CANNOT
BE SAID FOR THE DISEASE.
TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE,
WOMEN AND MEN ALL OVER THE
WORLD, MANY LIVING HERE IN
DELMARVA.
>> IF YOU ASK ANY BREAST CANCER
PATIENT, CHANCES ARE THEY WILL
TELL YOU SUPPORT FROM PEOPLE
LIKE YOU AND US IS OFTEN WHAT
CARRIES THEM THROUGH THE
TOUGHEST DAYS.
SO HERE TO TELL US MORE ABOUT
THE SPORT IS LORI GATES,
EASTERN SHORE MANAGER OF SUSAN
G. KOMEN, WE ARE SO GLAD THAT
YOU'RE WITH US THIS AFTERNOON.
>> THANK YOU.
>> SO, YOU ARE BOTH CANCER
SURVIVORS, RIGHT?
>> YES.
>> SO TAKE US BACK TO THE DAY
WHEN YOU WERE DIAGNOSED.
>> WELL, I THOUGHT TO MYSELF
THAT THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING
TO ME.
I WAS HEALTHY AND YOUNG, ONLY
44.
AND, I WAS JUST SHOCKED.
BUT SOMETHING CAME.
I HAD AN EPIPHANY.
IN EARLY ON IN THE DIAGNOSIS, I
REALIZED THAT THIS WILL NOT BE
THE WORST THING TO EVER HAPPEN
TO ME.
I CARRIED THAT MESSAGE
THROUGHOUT MY TREATMENT, EVEN
THOUGH THERE WERE SOME LOW
POINTS.
I STILL CARRY THE MESSAGE,
KNOWING THAT THIS WOULD NOT BE
THE WORST THING.
THIS IS A POSITIVE THING WHEN
IT IS ALL SAID AND DONE.
>> WOW.
>> AND HOW ABOUT YOU?
>> IT HAS BEEN A WHILE.
I'M A 13 YEAR SURVIVOR THIS
YEAR.
LIKE SUSAN, IT KIND OF COMES
OUT OF NOWHERE, I THINK.
I WAS 49, FAIRLY YOUNG.
I FOUND A LUMP, AND THAT
CHANGED MY LIFE.
I FEEL GRATEFUL THAT I AM ABLE
TO STILL BE HERE AND GO THROUGH
WITH MY LIFE.
I FEEL LIKE I AM CARRYING THE
MESSAGE FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT
SO FORTUNATE.
>> SO YOU KNEW THAT THERE WAS A
PROBLEM?
>> IT WAS A DIFFICULT MOMENT.
SOMETHING ELSE, AND I DENIED IT
FOR A FEW MONTHS LIKE MOST
WOMEN DO.
BUT THE THING IS, IF YOU FIND
SOMETHING DIFFERENT, GET IT
CHECKED.
THAT'S IMPORTANT THING.
IT CHECKED, DON'T DELAY.
>> NOW, YOU BOTH ARE OBVIOUSLY
HERE SPREADING AWARENESS, AND
THAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, WHY?
>> WELL, IT HAS BEEN A GAME
CHANGER, REALLY.
EDUCATION AND AWARENESS HAS
CONTRIBUTED TO MUCH BETTER
OUTCOMES FROM BREAST CANCER.
BEEN THE GOAL OF ORGANIZATIONS
LIKE KOMEN, AND OTHERS, TO
EDUCATE PEOPLE SO THEY ARE NOT
WAITING.
THEY WILL GO IN IF THEY THINK
SOMETHING IS UP, OR THEY WILL
JUST GET THEIR ANNUAL MAMMOGRAM
AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE
SCREENED.
>> SO, I'M SURE A LOT OF PEOPLE
HAVE HEARD OF SUSAN G. KOMEN.
BUT FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW
THAT MUCH, GIVE US AN OVERVIEW
OF WHAT SUSAN G. KOMEN DOES.
>> KOMEN IS REALLY A GRANTING
ORGANIZATION, AND A RESEARCH
ORIENTED ORGANIZATION.
ALL OF THE LOCAL AFFILIATES
LIKE OUR MARYLAND AFFILIATES,
THE FUNDS THAT WE BRING AGAIN,
75 PERCENT STAYS IN THE LOCAL
COMMUNITY OR THE STATE OF
MARYLAND.
WE DO FOCUS ON THE EASTERN
SHORE WITH GRANT PROGRAMS.
AND, 25 PERCENT GOES TO THE
NATIONAL ORGANIZATION WHICH
GOES INTO LARGE RESEARCH
GRANTS, SOME OF WHICH HAPPEN AT
MARYLAND INSTITUTIONS LIKE
HOPKINS, THEY RECEIVED, AND
GRANT RESEARCH FUNDING.
WE FEEL LIKE YOU'RE HEADING ALL
FRIENDS, HELPING WITH
SURVIVORSHIP PROGRAMS, HELPING
WITH MAMMOGRAMS AND FURTHER
RESEARCH PROGRAMS.
>> IT IS WONDERFUL THAT IT
STAYS LOCAL.
I IMAGINE PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE
THAT BECAUSE IT IS A NATIONAL
ORGANIZATION.
>> AND I WAS ABLE TO RECEIVE
SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF THE
COMMON GRANTS HERE ON THE
SHORE.
>> YES.
>> SO IT WAS VERY HELPFUL.
>> AND THE COMMUNITY CAN SHOW
ITS SUPPORT?
>> YES.
>> HOW?
TELL ME WHAT IS GOING ON.
[LAUGHTER]
>> OH, IT IS REALLY A WONDERFUL
WEEKEND OF EVENTS, THE MAIN
EVENT IS THE RACE FOR THE CURE
RIGHT ON THE BOARDWALK IN OCEAN
CITY, THE SIXTH ANNUAL RACE.
LOTS OF FUN THINGS GO ON IN THE
RACE VILLAGE IN ADDITION TO
WALKING OR RUNNING.
WE HAVE KIDS FOR THE CURE
ACTIVITIES, A SURVIVOR TENT, A
PARADE OF PINK, A DANCE PARTY.
WE EVEN HAVE HERE AFTER THE
RACE THIS YEAR, SO THERE IS A
LOT TO DO.
WE EVEN HAVE EVENTS IN ADDITION
TO THAT GOING ON THROUGHOUT THE
WEEKEND.
A PARTY SATURDAY NIGHT POST
RACE, THAT ANYBODY CAN COME TO.
SO, WE BRING A CELEBRATORY
FEELING TO THIS, AND WE HOPE
PEOPLE WILL HELP SUPPORT HOW WE
DO WHAT WE DO WITH OUR GRANT
FUNDING.
UNDER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING,
THE PRESS CONFERENCE, WE
PARTNER WITH PR IN SEE ON
ANNUAL EACH YEAR.
THIS IS HOW WE HAVE THE FUNDS
TO DO WHAT WE DO.
IT IS A GREAT TIME AND
FAMILY-FRIENDLY.
>> SO TELL US MORE ABOUT THE
PARADE OF PINK.
WHAT IS THE PARADE OF PINK?
>> THAT IS HOW WE HONOR OUR
SURVIVORS, STARTING OUT IN
FRONT OF THE SURVIVORS 10.
THE WOMEN COME TO THE RACE
VILLAGE, SO FAMILIES AND
ATTENDEES CAN HONOR THEM.
IT CULMINATES WITH THEM ON
BLEACHERS, WHERE WE GET A
PHOTOGRAPH OF THE WHOLE GROUP.
>> THERE IT IS.
>> AND IT IS QUITE POWERFUL.
YOU MIGHT HAVE A PHOTOGRAPH OF
IT.
>> YES.
>> IT IS A POWERFUL THING TO
SEE THAT MANY WOMEN AND MEN.
>> AND MEN, EXACTLY, IN A GROUP
LIKE THAT, TO TOUCH YOU, AND TO
WANT ONE IN EIGHT ARE
DIAGNOSED.
>> WELL, IF YOU'D LIKE TO
ATTEND, SATURDAY, APRIL 8 AT
7:30 A.M. REGISTER AT 9:30 OR
9:00 A.M.
THE WALK AND RUN AT THE OC
BOARDWALK, AT THE INLET THERE.
YOU CAN'T MISS IT.
WHEN YOU GET DOWN THE THERE
THAT MORNING, AND OF COURSE,
WBOC IS A PROUD SPONSOR.
>> IT IS A GREAT TIME.
LADIES, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR
