We met Producer PDOGG at his workroom in Nonhyun-dong, Seoul. There are all different kinds of keyboards filled in a small room. (photo taken by Kim Kyung Rok)
The steps of BTS were different from the beginning.
They started from a small-sized label company that is not a so-called big label company, and it is not like it made a hit with the first song.
It was an uncommon case in domestic music industry that they slowly progressed by recording their growth stories into their music such as 'School trilogy' and 'Youth trilogy'.
Unlike the usual management of their SNS accounts by the company, they communicate directly with their fans in a message that is in sync with their music,
which has become a channel to let people know about BTS around the world.
It was different journey from others, starting off as "scrappers" and taking the flowery journey to "Top Social Artist" award on Billboard.
Naturally, the way they make music was different from any other idols.
It all started when Producer PDOGG (Kang Hyo Won, 34) was discovered by Bang Shi Hyuk PD through the internet cafe.
In 2007, he came up to Seoul from Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do and worked mainly with ballad artists such as 8eight, Lim Jeong Hee and 2AM.
But when he discovered Rap Monster introduced by Sleepy and brought him to the company, the "History" began.
The meeting between a producer born in Changwon but believed his roots for music were from LA, America, and already a famous underground talented trainee naturally led to Hip-Hop.
Since then, the possible music range expanded more as each member like Suga and J-hope joined through auditions throughout the country.
We met Pdogg at the BIGHIT Entertainment studio in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul, and he said "From the first time I met BTS members, they already had almost a complete music identity."
"I majored in music education at university and did a comprehensive theoretical class, but rather than teaching them like a teacher, we work with exchanging thoughts," he said.
How did BTS come this far receiving what kind of "private effective lessons" as all the members participate in the creation of music?
PDOGG has worked on almost all BTS songs from their debut song 'No More Dream' to 'Blood Sweat & Tears' and 'Spring Day'.
Q: How does the lesson work? A: We just get together and watch movies and listen to the music.
We watch a movie like "8 MILE" to talk about how rough lyrics are created through the rap battles at the Detroit Hip-Hop club,
and talk about Hip-Hop fashion to life-style together.
They also find and listen to the basis of the music samples used in the film, and I give out related assignments.
Q: What kind of assignment is it? A: As you know, BTS is a group that has a clear growth narrative.
We go through a lot of meetings to realize it musically.
Although it varies from song to song, we usually start with making beats first to match the theme of the lyrics.
If the beat is bad, it will not progress, so we each write and listen to each others.
Q: How do you assign roles? A: Rap Monster and Suga are all-around.
J-hope and Jungkook can also make beats, and other memebers do song-writing.
My job is mostly making a track, editing and combining memeber's lyrics and accompaniment.
More than 90% of the lyrics are written by the members themselves.
Q: What is different from when you work alone? A: When I work alone, I can let out personal emotions fully, but it is easy to fall into habitual behavior.
By contrast, coworking is a continuation of unexpected discoveries.
We collect only the best ideas from the talented members, so there are probably only the best results.
For 'Spring Day', the lyrics and melody written by rap monster in two days were very good.
I wasn't fully satisfied that it was a little too smooth, but when we connected the parts received from foreign composers, the song became better with twice more touching.
Q: As a producer, what would be the secret to BTS success? A: I think the biggest element is talking about their own stories.
They do not write about things they do not know. "No More Dream" lyrics could sound childish, but that's the emotions that age feels.
"Moving" from "HYYH pt.1" is also a song made when they actually moved out of the dorm they had lived for 3 years.
It is also advantageous that they are well influenced by each other.
For Jin, he was originally a vocalist and not a song writer, but he wrote and completed his solo song in a very busy schedule.
Normally you would give up after rejected twenty times, but I was moved because he did not give up till the end.
Q: Did you have a moment of crisis? A: Every moment was a crisis.
After finishing the "School Trilogy" and moving to the "Youth" series, we were worried about how to bring the growth narrative and change in music together.
Fortunately, 'I Need U' kept us in good momentum, but at the time I had too many thoughts and couldn't even keep the deadline.
A lot of people around me were skeptical about "Blood Sweat & Tears" too.
The Mumbatone trap was coming up all over the world at the time,
but many people pointed out that the reggae-based music in Korea wouldn't work and is very different from previous BTS Hip-Hop.
But it felt like I had to do it, and I'm glad it turned out to be a good result.
PDOGG majored in vocal music in art middle and high school but drawn into Hip-Hop, and he said, "There is a part in pure art that 80% of the talent you just have to be born with and can not overcome with efforts."
"Unlike vocal music, which requires a lot of background knowledge when listening to the music, Hip-Hop is attractive because anyone can easily relate."
"There is a great advantage when I write melody lines because I can use counter lines and more classical approach,
but Bang Sihyuk PD says I strangely have trot feels. Maybe it's because I wasn't born and raised in Seoul? (Laugh)"
On 21st, the world artist, electronic duo, Chainsmokers invited BTS to their rehearsal stage at the Billboard Music Awards.
They also showed affections uploading a photo of them together on twitter.
Now where will the next BTS stop-over be? PDOGG hinted that he is now into Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
"Maybe I am tired of pre-existing music, so I like chill-out music that can get me relaxed now."
"It's vintage and easy to listen to. Recently I bought a vintage instrument such as Roland Juno 60. I've fallen into the rough but warm feeling of analogue, so I think the sound will change in the future."
