Today we're going to look at
1st Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 11.
Here the Apostle Paul says to us,
I've got a ton of memories from when I was a kid.
And one of my favorite things to do
each summer was go to summer camp and we
would go to a place in northern
Wisconsin it was called Camp Bird.
And so each summer, with hundreds of other
campers, we would head up there and we
would shoot arrows,
we would play softball,
we'd make crafts, and sing songs.
It's not as dorky as it sounds but it's close
and one of my favorite things to do though
was to go down to the lake.
And I loved to swim, and we would swim around this
dock and we would jump off this floating dock
with a diving board.
It's here that I had
one of the most memorable exchanges of my life.
I swam out to the dock and I
introduced myself to one of the older campers.
His name was Mike.
I said "Hi Mike, I'm Jared"
And then he responded,
"Hi Jared I'm Mike."
What you don't know is that he
was making fun of me because
he imitated my voice.
Now,
remember the first time you
heard your recorded voice?
In my mind my fifth-grade voice sounded a cross
between like Clint Eastwood and Barry White.
Apparently that was not the case,
because when he imitated my voice
imagine the highest, squeakiest
Mickey Mouse voice that you can imagine
as he said, "Hi Jared I'm Mike."
I didn't exactly cry,
but, to tell you the truth, I wanted to.
And it's now 30 years later and I can
still vividly see this scene in my mind.
Isn't crazy how we remember
hurtful words more than we remember encouraging words?
Well the Apostle Paul is telling
us to build each other up and encourage
each other with our words.
So today you've got all kinds of opportunities
to use your words.
And so Christ came to this earth.
Christ rose again so that you
can be something different and use your
words to build each other up and to make
a difference in their life that's positive.
Are they going to remember your words
that you use even if it's a high, squeaky voice
30 years from now?
Probably not.
But that's probably not the worst thing.
Let's pray.
Dear Jesus, help us use our
words to be kind and build up our
classmates and our co-workers
and our family.
In your name, amen.
It is so easy to remember
the discouraging words that someone says
or time that they made fun of us.
But what is it time where someone went out
of their way to encourage and build you
up in God's word?
We'd love to hear it,
