In this video, which is part of my "how to mix" series, I'm going to explain what

gain staging is, and how to set it up in FL Studio.

Gain staging is one of the easiest and most crucial tasks when it comes to music production,

yet it's often overlooked.

If you don't care about gain staging it may become more difficult to get a good sounding

mix.

So take some time to set this up properly.

It only takes a few seconds, and it will save you plenty of time and effort later on.

So what is gain staging?

Simply put, gain staging is the procedure of getting a healthy signal flow within your

daw.

The whole point of gain staging is to make sure that you're not clipping anywhere.

Now, I could go on talking about analogue vs digital headroom, floating point, and so

on, but why make it more difficult than it has to be?

You don't need to know all this in order to gain stage properly.

To make a long story short; Gain staging used to be done very differently back in the analogue

days.

And I think this is part of the reason why there's so much confusion around it today.

Back then, you needed to take into account things such as signal to noise ratios.

Avoiding noise was a crucial part of the gain staging process.

In a Digital Audio Workstation however, this is no longer an issue, so today we gain stage

very differently.

There's several ways to set up gain staging.

Some people prefer one method over the other, and some may say that you need to reach a

specific decibel level and so on.

Let's just ignore that for now, as it's not really important.

What's important is that you keep your levels down from the very first source, into the

next, and the next until it ends up in the master bus.

The only thing that really matter is that we don't clip the signal anywhere.

It doesn't matter if our mix reaches minus six desibels or minus three desibels.

As long as it's peaking well bellow zero desibels, you should be safe.

So let's jump into it.

I'm going to try to make this as simple as possible.

Let's load a new project.

Select empty project here.

If you open a new project in FL Studio there will be a limiter on the master, which will

push up the levels.

And we don't want that.

Make sure there's no limiting on your master before you proceed!

Let's add a VST.

Route it to a mixer channel.

I'll just quickly add some chords so that we have something to play around with.

There are three main places to adjust the volume.

The mixer, the channel rack and in the synth itself.

A lot of people tend to forget about the levels in the synth.

As I said, It's important to reduce the volume at the source to avoid clipping, and

the synth is what's generating the sound.

If you're using a microphone or some other gear to record into FL Studio, then make sure

you're levels are healthy there as well.

Some professionals like to increase the volume in the channel rack all the way up to maximum

for all synths, and then just focus on the mixer and the synths themselves.

Note that samples should always be left at their default value.

It doesn't matter which way you do it with regard to the channel rack.

You can leave it at the default value, or set it to max.

It's up to you.

The most important thing is the source, which in this case is the synth itself, and the

signal level when it reaches the master.

Let's open massive.

Note that there's a master volume knob here.

Every synth should have a master output like this somewhere.

Watch what happens when I turn this up to far.

That's what clipping sounds like!

When it turns red, that's a really bad sign..

This is what we want to avoid at all cost.

It's possible to clip just a little bit, without even noticing it.

This effect is cumulative, meaning that the more elements you have in your mix, the worse

it will tend to get.

It's very important to make sure that we're not clipping anywhere.

The best way to make sure of that is to always turn down those knobs and faders, and always

mix low.

In other words: Gain staging.

I usually turn down the levels on every single element so that it's hitting around minus

fifteen decibels on the master.

It doesn't have to be exactly fifteen, anywhere from minus ten to minus eighteen decibels

will usually be fine.

By doing this, I know my input levels are good, and I can adjust the fader on the mixer

to get the mixing right afterwards, without having to worry about any potential clipping.

It's much better to prevent the clipping at the source right away, instead of than

trying to figure out what's causing the mix to sound bad later on.

If you want, you can load up a metering plugin on the master to make it easier to see what's

going on.

There's a lot of free plugins out there that will do the job nicely.

In this case I'm using Span, which is also a free plugin.

I'll add the link to the download page in the description bellow, so that you can head

over there and grab it if you want to.

Let's add another synth, and make some pads..

Do the same thing we did before.

Make sure the output volume in the vst does not clip by turning it down so that it reaches

minus fifteen decibels on the master.

It's a very dynamic sound, so you won't be able to hit EXACTLY minus fifteen.

This is close enough.

Again, It doesn't matter if you aim for minus fifteen or minus twelve.

The whole idea is to give ourselves a safety net to make sure we're not clipping.

Keep doing this for all your elements.

Every time you add a new synth, make sure you gain stage it.

The exception is of course samples and loops.

Those should be left at the default level in the channel rack.

We can adjust the levels for these in the mixer.

If you feel that the volume is way too low, just turn up your monitors.

Alternatively, you can put a limiter on the master in order to give yourself some volume,

but make sure that you place your metering plugin BEFORE the limiter on your master channel

if you choose to do this.

Remember to turn it off before rendering out the final mix for mastering, unless you intend

to do the mastering "in the mix".

That's it for the gain staging.

I could talk a lot more about this, but I'm trying to make it as short, straight to the

point and simple as possible here.

[Braised spicy chicken & Glazed sweet potatoes] [Confident]

Back in our trainee days, I made you glazed sweet potatoes.

[Jungkook cooked it up nicely] Yeah, it was very good.

But what's this bread? It's not related to our menu.

- To eat while we cook. - To treat ourselves.

- Morning rolls. - Let's put them here and make Tae-hyung eat. - Thanks.

- So he can't do anything. - Thanks.

- No, this is enough. - This is more than enough.

[Jin knows cooking best] If it's too bland, you can add salt.

[Today's great tip] Key to remember! If it tastes bland, add in salt!

[Jimin gives V a task] Tae-hyung, here's a mission.

While I get on pan-fried potatoes,

search online for a sauce recipe.

[What does that mean?] - Search for the sauce? - Yeah, and make it.

Soy sauce and stuff.

[Grasping his mission] - Soy sauce. - Since that's the base.

[Rap Monster visits V] Tae-hyung, where's the strawberry jam?

- Here's the jam. - Give me.

[Skilled at cutting bread] [Thanks a lot]

[Looks good]

[MC Jin] - What are you searching? - For the sauce.

Soy sauce.

[Mumbling] Don't you dip it in spicy sauce?

[He finally finds the recipe]

This is the only mission I have.

[Determined] I'll make sure to get it right.

[In good faith] I trust that you can.

- That's the cherry on top. - You can trust me.

- Jimin, how are you getting along? - I'll get started now.

How much would you like the eat?

[Quick confession] I honestly don't like it.

But if you make it for me,

[Affectionate] I'll try my best to enjoy it.

Don't you need more oil to pan-fry?

Is that how it's supposed to be?

[Throwing out facts] - I mistook it for fish cakes. - What?

[Hmmpf] They're pan-fried potato despite the color.

[Shaping it neatly]

[MC Jin visits Jungkook again] How are you getting along?

- This is a challenge. - Challenge?

I made you glazed sweet potatoes when we were trainees.

[Skilled pan swirls]

[Secret to glazed sweet potatoes] - I used a lot of sugar. - Really?

[Sweet]

- Tae-hyung. - What? - Are you on the sauce? - Yeah.

[Suga sees V on the sauce] Tae-hyung, very good.

[All eyes on V] What is Tae-hyung doing?

[V's puzzled] This bowl...

[Squirrel in bowl?] Where did you get this?

[Impressed] What is this squirrel?

Jin will be enjoying today's food.

[Pleased] - So I got it to look classy. - Classy?

[2 points for the squirrel] [Pleased] - You get 2 more points. - Thanks.

- Tae-hyung, are you finished? - Yeah.

Then please find me a plate.

[V's second mission: Find a plate] - A wide and flat one. - Okay.

I won't let you down.

- I look forward to tasting it. - That looks really sweet.

[Stirring] If we sprinkle crushed nuts,

it'd look really exquisite.

Am I mistaken to think the sweet potatoes got stuck together?

- Jimin! - What? - Good.

Tae-hyung is doing well today.

[Jimin is pleased with V's plate]

[Not good enough]

[Rummaging] I opened the lid and it smells good.

[Pleased] - Really? - Yeah. - This is really good.

- Hang on, Jimin! - I'll get you another one.

[What?] No, you don't need to.

[Teammates advise against it] - No need. - Don't go overboard.

[Suga suggest the squirrel bowl] How about placing this on?

That's great. No more. That looks a stir-fried dish.

[Done with glazed sweet potatoes] - It looks great. - Good!

Jungkook, sprinkle on sesame seeds!

[Yum but it's hot] - Sesame seed garnish. - What do you think?

[Hot] - It's good. - That looks bland.

[No time left] - Let it simmer. - Can you in 10 minutes?

[Confident] Trust me, it will thicken up.

Scare it, so it shrivels up.

['94ers shout at the pot] Hey! Hurray and simmer up!

[Okay... I will] - Tell me when it's 5 minutes. - When?

When we have 5 minutes left.

[Frustrated] - When is that? - 12:10 PM.

- We have 5 minutes left now. - No, 4 minutes.

- 4 minutes left. - What? 4 minutes left?

[Sharp reasoning] - 4 minutes. - 4 minutes until 5 minutes left.

[Not thinking anymore] 9 minutes left.

[Taking it easy] - Shall we wrap up? - I'm shriveling up instead.

[Awesome] - Impressive. - This is really...

[Tasty braised seafood] Similar to what they sell.

[Suga the cook's dish] This is no joke.

[It's okay] We're in trouble.

J-Hope, you made this braised chicken.

[You're awesome] I respect that you actually can.

[Thanks friend] I can do better next time.

[Suga pours the content on plate]

[Suga, you're the best] Wow!

[Envious] These guys did great.

[Suga cooked in all seriousness] I didn't laugh but focused.

Even the plating.

[8 minutes before time's up] [Finishing up] Now the garnish.

Do any of you need more time?

I'd like 5 more minutes.

[But rules are rules] No, the time should be fair.

[Yeah] Right, precise timing.

Jin, look at this.

[Jin suddenly laughs]

[What is Jungkook holding up?] Show it on screen.

[Glazed sweet potatoes are stuck] Everyone.

[It's Jungkook's show time!] Magic.

[Playing it serious] - Is it on a magnet? - Ah!

[Bursts of laughter]

What looks like sweet potatoes is actually a part of the plate.

[Swish] Jin, how do you like this fun?

[Sweet potato plate] You get 10 points for laughter.

[My show isn't over]

[Did you think I'm done?]

[Turning] Like he's behind the wheel.

[Sweet potatoes stay in place]

They won't ever fall off.

Done with braised seafood.

[Suga the cook's braised seafood]

[Appetizing] My seafood's on the table.

- Jimin, is the pan-fried potato done? - I'll put it on the table.

[Suga's team has time to spare]

[Jimin's pan-fried potato]

[Jimin carries the squirrel bowl]

The sauce is bigger than the main.

[Here comes the soy sauce] Our sauce is bigger than the main.

[V's ambitious plating draws attention]

[V loves to decorate food] - Awesome. - Plating is everything.

Plating is everything!

[Pleased with laughter] You get 5 points for laughter.

[Jimin, Suga, V's all done] - We're done. - Applause!

[Taking it easy] Finish up and plate your food.

[J-Hope hurries short on time]

- Now the plating. - Please clean up. - Clear your work!

[Jungkook, J-Hope, Rap Monster's done!]

[BTS finished cooking]

We got nice dishes out.

[MC Jin laughs at the squirrel] I was all seriousness.

That takes all the spotlight.

[V's great plating] They have a squirrel pet.

- Great. - The secret will be revealed.

[Jungkook's team goes first] - You first. - Yeah? Okay.

[J-Hope and Rap Monster's dish] It's a refreshing taste, like our first time.

- We focused on the taste. - Yeah, true to the menu.

We focused on braised chicken and glazed sweet potato.

[Curious] - Does it have a name? - What does this remind you of?

- I can think of 3X3 bingo. - Right, it's bingo sweet potatoes.

[Bingo sweet potatoes] Great.

- What is that called? - Our braised chicken?

Cock-a-doodle spicy.

[Suga team's food]

[Bursts out laughing every time] And now...

[Goes on explaining] Our main is braised seafood.

- This is called Jamwon-dong braised seafood. - I see. - Yeah.

[Suga recreated the taste they like] What we used to taste.

- It's that taste. - Really? - Right. - Did you get takeout?

- No, I made it. - What is the pan-fried potato called?

[Suga calls it Min's potato] - Well.. - Min's potato.

To make Jimin's work stand out,

I made this sauce, "Squirrel Locked in Garden".

[Squirrel kept safe] Is the squirrel locked in?

Release the squirrel!

[Squirrel gets its freedom] This is just great.

[V's other ambitious work] The squirrel is free to go.

[MC Jin's kind of fun] What's this?

[A treat prepared for MC Jin] This is chocolate milk.
