Tefillin, or as many call it, phylacteries, is the start of so many articles on Wikipedia
and everywhere on the internet.
They're like "tefillin" and then "phylacteries," it is insane.
Nobody calls it phylacteries.
You know where this phrase came from?
It came from the Greeks for "amulet."
"Phulakt-" something, "phulakterion" I think is "amulets" in Greek, and for some reason
people have extrapolated it to be like "Well, if that's the origin of the word," when the
Greeks incorrectly were like "Oh yeah, tefillin, they're just like Jewish amulets, right?
Let's use that all the time."
And then dictionaries have just been like "Yeah, phylacteries, phylacteries, let's just
say that."
Everyone thinks they're called phylacteries.
If you're using tefillin, you know that nobody has ever called them phylacteries.
But if you're looking online, you'll be like "Oh okay, well here's one name and here's
another equally good name."
Don't do that.
They're just called tefillin.
Alright, this has been a rant with Jeremy Shuback.
