Health Benefits of Coconuts - Pina Banana Smoothie Recipe - Duration: 6:50.

Hey everyone! Today we are making the

Pina banana smoothie and I'm pretty

excited about it.

My name is Jess and I am with GreenBlender. GreenBlender is a smoothie

delivery service and every week we send

you all the fruit vegetables and

superfoods you need to make awesome

green smoothies at home. And every

weekday we make one of those smoothies

with you. So, today we are making the Pina

Banana Smoothie and I'm pretty excited

because it's a bit of a healthy play on

the Pina Colada, one of my more favorite

summer drinks. And I wanted to talk a

little bit about coconut. So coconut is

native to Southeast Asia it's a member

of the drupe family: peaches and plums

and apricots. And a few interesting

things about the coconut tree is that

its trunk is very flexible and its roots

actually grow to the side and down and

these two ways that the tree growth

helps it withstand tropical storms

Since it's mostly in tropical regions, and

they get crazy storms and even tsunamis.

Coconut trees have been known to be able

to withstand tsunamis, which is pretty

incredible. And the way that the coconut

tree disperses, and what I mean by

disperses, is no usually bees will

pollinate the flowers and then go from

flower to flower and help disperse the

plant. The way that's a coconut tree does

it, is that the coconuts themselves are

really really buoyant. So they just fall

off the tree and if they're not picked

by people they sort of go down the beach

and they get picked up by the ocean and

then they just sort of float along until

they find another beach and wash up

there and creating the trees which is

pretty cool. I did not know that. There's

also a sort of old wives tale, if you

could call it that, sort of

unsubstantiated But there are lots of

reports that during World War II,

because there was not enough blood

plasma available, when

soldiers were injured in the hospital

they used coconut water as an IV drip.

I haven't been able to find if that was

for sure, but it's a pretty interesting

fact and it makes the health benefits of

coconut all the more real. So the health

benefits -the main health benefits of

coconut is the MCT, the medium-chain... I wrote it

down... the medium chain triglycerides! MCT, so

these are healthy fatty acids that turn

into energy quickly. So, your body is able

to use them quickly, they may keep you

fuller for longer, and there are even a

few small studies that say that they

help burn belly fat. Don't quote me on

that. There's not enough studies to say

yes for sure. But if you're looking for a

healthy oil to cook with, coconut oil is

great

-just use it your moderation. Coconut oil

is also or coconut itself is also

antibacterial, so it's a nice thing to

eat when you are not feeling your best.

So, when you are buying dried coconut, we

send coconut flakes, as you can see here.

You can also buy coconut cream or you

can even buy coconut meat. That's

fantastic in smoothies. When you are

buying dried coconut, make sure you find

an organic unsweetened type. They do make

sweetened coconut, but that is incredibly

full of a ton of sugar, and it's usually

for, you know, baking and cookies and

things like that. So -but we use an

organic unsweetened kind.

Its really really good; makes your smoothie

extra extra creamy. So, enough about

coconut,

even though I love it! Let me show you

what else is a massive smoothie. We're

going to use a banana. We're going to use

some pineapple. Here's your creamy

pina colada

base. I'm going to use some greens and

some lucuma powder, which is a great

natural sweetener. Lucuma is on the low

part of the glycemic index. Its not going to

boost your blood sugar, so yeah. Let's get

started! Alright, I'm going to add my water. Now, if your

blender has a hard time processing sort of

the fibrous ingredients you can soak the

coconut maybe for an hour or even

overnight and that'll make it a lot

easier to blend. It'll blend really

really quickly. And again, with these

greens, if you're little hesitant about

the intense green flavor, although this

will not be very intense, but if you're

just starting out on your smoothie

journey feel free to just take the leaves

right off the stem. That will make - A. it'll

be easier blending and B. you'll kind of

stop - or lessen the green taste that may

come with these greens. So, I'm going to

throw in the pineapple. Alright, throw in

this banana and, as you can see, this is a

pretty spotty banana, but that means

nothing except it will be super sweet, which

I am happy about. If your banana is less

spotty, that just means that it will be

less sweet, which is also good for trying

to watch your sugar intake. Alright, yeah

that - this is a pretty simple smoothie, which

is great if you don't have a lot of time

in the morning. Alright, so let's get this guy blending.

Fun fact, my dad did not think that he was a fruit and vegetable

person, but he's been getting these boxes

for a while. He loves them now. It was a

slow change, but now it's a permanent

change and that's the best kind of

change! Alright, let's take a sip of this. Mmm, it's really

really nice. It basically tastes like a

healthy pina colada, or the healthy

tropical drink. You can taste the greens,

but very very barely. Mostly what you

taste is the banana and pineapple. If you

wanted to put a little rum in here, I

won't say anything. I'm sure that would

make it extra delicious for an afternoon

or evening snack! This smoothie itself is

going to give you a lot of energy and

it's great for your skin. So, thank you so

much for watching and tuning in. We will

be back tomorrow with another awesome

smoothie. Until then, have a great day!

Cheers!

Oh
