Intersectionality - The pivot of inclusion - Duration: 3:30.

I am a Woman. I am a person with disability. I am a Tamilian. I am an HR

professional. I am this and a LOT more and all of this comes together and

defines who I am and this is what we mean when we mean intersectionality.

Welcome to this edition of diversity dialogues where we're going to be

talking about intersectionality and its impact at the workplace.

When it comes to intersectionality, it's important to remember two fundamental

things. The first one is that One identity of an individual is not bigger

than the other. So for example if there is a woman, then the woman can be a woman

who is married, a woman who is not married, a woman who is a person with

a disability, a woman who belongs to the LGBT community, a woman who is a mother

and all of them are women and all our policies, our practices, our culture need

to be inclusive towards all of them. Therefore the maternity policy for

example in a company should also look at adoption. It should also look at things like

surrogacy. It's important that a gender neutral washroom, for example, does

not only cater to people who fall within the gender spectrum (transgender). But also caters to

people with disability. If you have a family day, then a father should be able

to bring his daughter and use the gender-neutral washroom.

It should serve the purpose for all. The second important point to remember is

that if a person belongs to more than one minority community,

the person may be going through discrimination on multiple

counts. For example a gay man may go through some level of exclusion on

account of being gay but a gay man from an economically marginalized background

may go through exclusion on both counts and therefore the organization needs to

be able to provide additional support on this particular aspect. Intersectionality

is increasingly becoming a very very important part of diversity and

inclusion and in fact it's becoming the pivot. It's about being inclusive towards

all and it's keeping humanity at the core of diversity and inclusion. Thank

you very much for watching this edition of diversity dialogues. If you have any

further questions please feel free to reach out to us. See you next time!
