Hello!
Welcome to English 101, Freshman Composition.
My name is Jennifer Cruz and I will be your instructor throughout this semester.
Since you have introduced yourself to me in your Introduction to Class Discussion post,
I will take just a little bit of time to introduce myself.
This is my 4th year teaching at Mt. San Jacinto College.
I attended UC Riverside where I received my Bachelor�s. in English.
I received my Master�s degree from National University.
I have also taught at the middle school level for nearly 15 years and have been at the high
school level for over two years now.
This may or may not be your first online class.
Regardless if this is the first time you are taking an online class or not, it is important
to know that in an online course, you need to be self motivated and keep up with all
the reading and all the assignments.
This class will not be lecture heavy.
Instead, you will learn through reading, watching videos, asking questions, discussing with
your peers, and practicing your writing.
It is important that you read and watch all information that will be provided to you in
the odules on Canvas.
Please do not skip any information in the modules.
� In this course, you will learn about several
different aspects of college level writing.
Some of the areas that you will learn about and practice are: how to actively read and
analyze college level texts, how to write a well developed argumentative paragraph and
essay, how to identify and apply rhetorical appeals, and how to find, evaluate, and integrate
reliable sources while using MLA format.
This section of English 101 is a fully online course.
Online courses are considered the �virtual equivalent� to face-to-face courses.
That means that the frequency and the amount of time you spend on Canvas should be similar
to the amount of time you would spend in a classroom for a face-to-face course.
Students should expect to spend the necessary time beyond the time spent online on Canvas
to complete the assignments.
This will vary, depending upon the individual; however, be aware of the fact that the writing
process takes time and takes effort.
Plan on committing to spending the time necessary to plan, write, revise, and edit your writing.
Since all of the communicating with your peers will be done online, it is important that
all students have what is called �Netiquette.� Netiquette is having etiquette while communicating
online in a manner that is respectful and values others' opinions.
Throughout this class, there will be several opportunities for you to discuss various topics
with your classmates using Canvas Discussion Boards.
�Because the class will be comprised of a diverse population with different backgrounds
and different perspectives, the topics that you discuss will likely elicit a variety of
responses and reactions.
In order for all students to have a safe learning environment to share their responses, it is
essential that all students participate in discussions in a non-threatening and professional
manner.
All students are expected to engage with each other in a respectful manner, even if you
are in disagreement on a topic.
Responses or comments on discussion boards that are offensive, threatening, or in any
way inappropriate, will not be tolerated.

for Discussion Board Etiquette or �Netiquette�.
In addition to communicating with your peers, there will likely be times when you will need
to communicate with me via email.
Because I want you to be successful during and after this course, I want to stress the
importance of using email etiquette.
First impressions are important, and sometimes an email is the first impression that someone
may have of you.
I have included some tips below this video on how to have email etiquette when corresponding
with people in an academic or professional context.
Please practice these tips whenever you email me, so that you get in the habit of using
email etiquette.
�Also, each of you have been given access to an MSJC email account and have access to
the Inbox in Canvas.
Please email me from your MSJC email account or through the Canvas Inbox when you need
to communicate with me.
You will find all readings, information, and assignments in the Modules on Canvas.
The modules have been arranged into weeks and each module will be opened one week at
a time.
Each module will open at midnight on the Sunday before the week begins.
All assignments need to be submitted on Canvas.
It is important that you pay attention to all due dates because with the exception of
one essay assignment, late work will not be accepted.
You will read more about the late policies for this class in the course syllabus.
If you know that the technology you use may not reliable, be sure you have a backup plan
in the event there is an issue with your technology and give yourself enough time to submit your
work before the due date.
With the exception of the discussions, your work needs to be submitted as a Microsoft
Word document or a PDF file.

After I read your assignments, I will provide you feedback.
After an assignment has been graded, please, please be sure to take the time to read the
feedback that I have provided you.
The purpose of my feedback is to support you with your learning so that you can make any
needed adjustments to your writing for upcoming assignments.
You may find my feedback in the following places: you may find feedback in a comment
box, you may find feedback in the rubric, or you may find feedback in the margins of
the submitted assignment.
Often times, you will find feedback in more than one of these three places, so look at
each of the three.
To become more familiar with how to read the feedback on graded assignments, there is a
tutorial on checking grades.
You can find a link on this page below this video for that tutorial.
Next, you will be reading the syllabus.
It is important that you thoroughly read through the course syllabus so that you can get an
understanding of the expectations for this course and learn about how things will work
throughout this semester.
You will read important information about the course such as the course objectives,
my policy on participation and attendance, information about submitting late assignments,
grading information, and much, much more.
By not reading the syllabus, you might find yourself asking questions about things that
have already been answered in the syllabus.
The syllabus also has a tentative list of the readings and assignments that you will
be expected to do.
Please know this list will change as needed according to students� learning needs.
If it seems that many students need extra practice in a particular area, for example
paragraph organization, then I will adjust assignments to accommodate this need.
Please pace yourself and be sure to keep up with the readings and assignments because
there are due dates.
