Hey guys! Matt here for Science or Fiction.
Many countries have proposed developing giant lasers to shoot at things in space.
No, this is not the plot of Austin Powers 4, these are real, honest-to-god plans hatched
up by a group of scientists.
The idea is that a massive laser would be used to zap space junk into such tiny pieces
so that they will no longer pose a threat to important spacecraft like the International
Space Station.
But, would that even work?
Are space lasers really a thing?
Well, first, you might be wondering, what the heck is space junk?
There are actually a couple of types.
There's natural and unnatural kinds.
The natural kind mostly refers to small meteors that orbit the sun.
The unnatural kind, also known as orbital debris, includes any man-made object orbiting
the Earth that no longer serves a useful function.
This includes pieces of nonfunctional spacecraft, old rockets, abandoned launch vehicle stations,
retired satellites, some dude in a Telsa/car etc.
Now, many space agencies are trying to develop plans to deal with the debris because space
junk is becoming a huge problem for their operations.
And this shouldn't come as a big surprise given that humans have been sending all sorts
of things up into the cosmos over the last 60 years.
There are over 20,000 pieces of space junk larger than a softball currently orbiting
Earth.
There are well over 500,000 pieces of space junk that are the same size as a marble or
larger, and millions upon millions of pieces that are much smaller.
That said, even a super tiny piece of space junk could inflict serious damage on an active
spacecraft, including the ISS, given that most of these morsels are traveling up to
speeds of up to 17,500 mph.
NASA first started to consider the option of a laser in 1996.
The space agency teamed up with the U.S. Air Force on Project Orion, which suggested that
a powerful laser could be used to vaporize surface material on space junk.
If vaporized enough, the idea was that the objects would be taken out of orbit and come
hurtling back to Earth, where they would burn up in the atmosphere.
This proposal never became a reality because the laser would be so powerful that it could
also have been considered a weapon, which wasn't likely to sit well with other countries.
Since then, NASA has proposed using much less powerful lasers to do a similar job.
In 2011, a team looked into using a system that would operate using photon momentum.
Instead of one quick zap, this laser would use a much weaker light that would concentrate
on one piece of junk for an hour or two over the course of multiple days.
Still, this proposal has yet to become a reality.
There have also been proposals for magnets that would be used to lure the pieces out
of orbit.
And (a group of) European engineers have recently developed a net with a harpoon to test the
effectiveness of plucking debris out of orbit and sending it into the atmosphere to burn.
But as lasers remain one of the more popular ideas, many still fear that the deployment
of lasers could mean the militarization of space.
Theoretically, a laser could also destroy functioning satellites from other countries,
not only space debris.
There are strict international treaties in place to prevent space militarization, which
makes plans like this one very controversial.
Whether or not space lasers ever become a reality, the plan is feasible.
The U.S. and other countries definitely have the technology to carry it out.
So while this laser scheme may seem like something out of a Star Wars or James Bond movie, it's
real, and it could start within our lifetimes.

good morning a pleasant one to you from Park Forest Illinois everybody this is
actually Lincoln Highway out here six lanes in a turn lane a major portion of
US Route 30 in Lincoln Highway and behind me is something really unique
that I had to pull around and take a look at be mindful this is somebody's
private property here off the sidewalk but they've turned their house into a
Chinese looking house
it's pretty unique cook on the garage there it says compassion glue for broken
people no idea why they did it like that that's kind of different so for me the
day is still up for grabs but it's possible that we get into a new state by
the end of the day today we shall see what happens and what we find on Lincoln
Highway so for the record this portion of Lincoln Highway is possibly the most
congested heavily populated part of Lincoln Highway but maybe that means
there'll be more interesting stuff or at least Lincoln related stuff here he is
accepting some flowers from two little girls and the monument itself says on
the road to greatness how neat is that and then you've got a Capitol building
of sorts there as well so there just might be more to actually see even
though it's like heavily heavily popular populated oh well guys it looks like old
Bertha's doing some advertising outside this restaurant here we're in the chef's
hat I don't think if she knows that she might be on the actual menu yeah well
they do have some nice artwork on the ass I named it go check it out for lunch

transcontinental highway constructed in 1913 228 New York City to San Francisco
dedicated the memory of Abraham Lincoln and the other side talks about the ideal
section 1.5 miles of Lincoln Highway completed in 1923 designed and built as
a model for the road construction so this is what Indiana had in mind for the
entire country for Lincoln Highway what do you think it looks pretty commercial
to me let's get out of this big city I got
about a half mile to walk just a fact of life there is no way around it because
as the roads get busier as the towns get bigger bigger there's just nowhere to
stop there's nowhere to park now we're gonna do a lot of walking no biggie
so I'm parked in the fancy neighborhood there of Castle wood yes by the way this
is not what I came back for Myers castle with a gargoyle and I don't really know
what it is we'll come back to that I might we'll see it was private property
or what's up all right this up here is what I came
for and it's only accessible 1/2 mile walk on the sidewalk there's a Lincoln
marker they're talking about the ideal section again I'm going to take a
picture of this so I can get some ideas for later for Indiana had some
restoration in 2009 does the traffic almost ruin the mood
I don't know it kind of does for me I feel like I'm yelling all the time says
what was the ideal campsite there was no auto travel a roadside motor court you
go to a motel for a dollar to 350 and then they bought the property of the
castle for $3,400 so it's Lincoln Highway right there and here we are at
Alban s the chocolate and gummi bear factory oh yeah
feel like we're in Willy Wonka's chocolate factory see what that is
chocolate coming down from the room yep
and
no photography or videography up there they don't want you filming their
factory stuff so we'll honor that but they got gummy bears coming off the
conveyor belt right now so magnet choices they they have the really flat
ones or they have the more three-dimensional globe dome ones by the
way I know I butchered the name when I came in it's pronounced albanese that's
that's the family name of the candy I honestly I have never heard of it before
I don't think I've ever seen it in the store but I'm gonna be more mindful when
I look around because they are literally making the gummy bears right here in
Indiana which is pretty cool so let me get to the Harvey and I'll show you what
I got what I stocked up on well you wouldn't like it Jax no no no it's
delicious man you wouldn't like it okay so I got a full pound of the twelve
flavor assortment there I got a quarter pound of the green apple and the blue
raspberry and the passionate peach and fresh strawberry and of course my
Albanese magnet right there with the 3d gummy bear it like it this needs to be
clean there yeah you know for whatever reason it seems that youtubers are not
allowed to complain or be negative or even talk about any problems they have
in their life because the outside world just thinks you know hey you guys have
it made you get paid to make videos and that's no work at all we're not gonna
get into the work aspect cuz i don't really care i can't change anybody's
mind you know we can't be negative we're only allowed to share the good times of
our lives any time we talk about our our problems our struggles what we're going
through day to day because people are sitting there watching that video and
they're comparing their lives to what we're doing it's like this guy can't
complain he doesn't pick up 80 pound bags of cement for a living all day you
know and that's that thing that comparison thing so your work is
harder than my work it's harder to do your job you're working hard you deserve
your money more than I do because you're doing something different than I'm doing
and so for the last couple months I have made a strong point to drop all my old
complaining and negativity and just talking about bad things that happen
stuff I can't control but to cut that out or to resolve it somehow by the end
of the video you know but okay I get it my bad days are nothing compared to
everybody else's bad days I get that okay I get it my life's a cakewalk and
everything's just peaches and cream all the time okay it's not but I can't argue
that effect anymore it doesn't matter I'm gonna finish Lincoln Highway either
way one way or another we're gonna make it guys I have downloaded my high
clearance app that I had from two years ago when I was in New York City so I've
got that app I'm gonna utilize Google Maps as well and a couple and all stays
also has a clearance measure so you can plan the route each day not necessarily
the stops of each day but I can plan the route so if I need to go this way and
Lincoln Highway has a 9 or 10 foot bridge somewhere I can go around that
and come back if I need to so there's gonna be a lot of pre night planning as
far as the map for preclearance Heights at least which is no problem I don't
mind but yeah are you pooped Jax you just look like
you had such a tiring day today how about you relax okay actually that
sounds like a good idea I'm gonna go back west about a mile to the Walley
world there and I'm gonna edit Jax is gonna stay at my side and hang out with
me while I work oh maybe multitask and watch last
night's Mariners game that I forgot to watch and that'll get back on the road
that's the winner green apple gets it I do want to make a
point that these gummi bears from albinus albanese had I already forget
Elma nice way better than any other temp it is so much moist flavor in them but
all the flavors are so strong the
I'm out at the place was probably a lot more fun - that's how I narrowed it down
to just those four individual flavors but uh that was a cool stop I don't need
a whole lot of candy well I don't need it I don't need any chocolate like
you'll almost never see me eat chocolate but gummy bears and starbursts and
strawberry frosted sprinkled doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts are also my favorite
with an iced coffee in the morning that's my day guys hope you enjoyed come

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is undoubtedly in full panic mode today after President Donald
Trump turned on him publicly.
The Daily Caller reported that Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to take a
series of shots at Sessions.
Trump began his tweet storm by quoting South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy.
"I don't think so, I think what the President is doing is expressing frustration that Attorney
General Sessions should have shared these reasons for recusal before he took the job,
not afterward," Gowdy said.
"If I were the President and I picked someone to be the country's chief law enforcement
officer, and they told me later, 'oh by the way I'm not going to be able to participate
in the most important case in the office, I would be frustrated too…and that's how
I read that.
Senator Sessions, why didn't you tell me before I picked you.
There are lots of really good lawyers in the country, he could have picked somebody else!"
"And I wish I did!" Trump added, indicating he really does wish he had picked a different
attorney general.
Trump has spoken out to slam Sessions many times since the attorney general recused himself
from the Russia investigation, allowing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint
Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
He has also criticized Sessions for not investigating his former opponent Hillary Clinton and not
taking control of the investigation.

A disturbing announcement was just made about Donald Trump's possible impeachment that
has millions of his supporters praying for him.
Breitbart reported that liberal billionaire Tom Steyer is spending tens of millions of
dollars on advertisements calling for Trump to be impeached because he is convinced that
this is the only way Democrats can win the 2018 midterm elections.
He thinks that turning the November elections into a referendum on Trump's impeachment
is the only way to engage voters who see little difference between the two major parties,
or who've given up on politics because nothing in Washington ever seems to change.
"We lose election after election as a result of this," said Kevin Mack, a strategist
for Steyer and his political organization, Need to Impeach, which is working nationwide
to get every Democratic candidate to commit to impeachment.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has been trying to discourage impeachment
talks within the party, but other Democrats have been running on impeachment.
One such Democrat is Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA), who has touted his two votes to begin
impeachment proceedings against Trump in a new campaign ad.
Rep. Maxine Waters has also constantly called for Trump to be impeached since she took office.
Over the weekend, she went so far as to call for Trump's supporters and administration
officials to be harassed whenever they are in public.
"Let's make sure we show up wherever we have to show up.
And if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a
gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd.
And you push back on them.
And you tell them they're not welcome anymore, anywhere.
We've got to get the children connected to their parents," Waters said.
The Democrats are clearly going to launch impeachment proceedings if they take back
the House, which is why it's crucial that Republicans keep the majority in this election!

Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta Recap: Stevie J's Daughter Tries To Put The Paws On Erica Mena
Tonight's episode of Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta brings us more beef of course, particularly the whole Stevie J vs Erica Mena saga, but hold that thought.
We start with Tokyo Vanity living her best performance-life on stage.
Tabius shows up because he wants to win her back, but he shows up with Keely, and if you recall, Tokyo Vanity doesn't rock with Keely so she's pissed when they come see her backstage.
She tells them both to bounce. Surprisingly, Keely leaves peacefully, but Tabius tries to stick around and finesse.
However, Tokyo Vanity sticks to her guns and tells him she's done.
She even tosses a bouquet of flowers at him as he leaves just so he knows the hate is real.
But hold that thought because later on, Sierra plays a role in getting them back together to at least have a civil conversation.
Tabius seems to be sincere in wanting to get another chance and Tokyo says she'll think about taking him up on his offer for dinner.
We all know she's going to go. Kirk's daughter, Kelsie, sets up him up with an ambush.
She thinks it's time for him to see his son, Kannon, and that's when Jasmine and Kanon come out, right on cue.
This meeting goes off without a hitch, and Kannon is super adorable and undeserving of the messiness of the adults around him.
Kirk resolves to build a better relationship with him and step up as a father from now on.
Later on, Rasheeda is business as usual. Pressed in Atlanta is doing so well that they had to move into a bigger space.
Rasheeda also finally admits that she took Kirk back for real, for real.
But then she finds out that he met up with Kannon due to the photo of the two of them being on IG.
Kirk mentioned nothing about the meeting to Rasheeda so she's fake annoyed but it's cool once Kirk explains the situation about how Kelsie set this up.
Kirk also presents the idea of Kannon meeting his siblings and Rasheeda is with it as long as she doesn't have to be around Jasmine.
It's a miracle she can stand to be around Kirk, but whatever.
None of us have to deal with the stress of her trifling man.
Sierra and Shooter finally finalize their divorce and then we get back to the beef between Stevie J and Erica.
You know, the one we've been hearing about on #TheBlogs lately about how Stevie called Erica Mena's son a gay slur and how Stevie allegedly attacked her at the taping of the reunion, so this is us getting to see that unfold.
Basically, Stevie feels some type of way because Erica has been calling him. He likes to control women, and Estelita is his latest victim.
Speaking of Estelita, now we're at the Danger Zone showcase where she gets to perform as the first lady.
Erica Mena shows up for Estelita and Stevie obviously isn't thrilled to see her, especially since she sent him a DM talking crazy.
Later on, Stevie's daughter, Savanna, tries to put the paws on Mena because she saw the offending DM but that good Love and Hip-Hop security shuts it down.
Then Just Brittany shows up to start trouble since she wasn't invited (because Stevie tried to force her into signing a contract with him and she was smart enough nice to) and because Erica and Estelita ruined her showcase in Houston.
Just Brittany showing up obviously achieves the intended result.
Estelita and Erica run up on Brittany and so does Spic, but again, security handles that.
Then Erica finds a stray Louboutin on the floor and pours a drink inside of it only to find out that it's actually Spice's shoe.
Stevie is still pissed about Erica so he turns up his petty by reaching out to Rich Dollaz, who happens to be in the A.
We all know that Rich is someone who understands the mad mind of Mena.
He also put her through a lot so his presence will be a disturbance.
But we have to wait until next week to see just how far this goes.

US Route 30 in Lincoln Highway and behind me is something really unique
that I had to pull around and take a look at be mindful this is somebody's
private property here off the sidewalk but they've turned their house into a
Chinese looking house

day is still up for grabs but it's possible that we get into a new state by
the end of the day today we shall see what happens and what we find on Lincoln
Highway so for the record this portion of Lincoln Highway is possibly the most
congested heavily populated part of Lincoln Highway but maybe that means
there'll be more interesting stuff or at least Lincoln related stuff here he is
accepting some flowers from two little girls and the monument itself says on
the road to greatness how neat is that and then you've got a Capitol building
of sorts there as well so there just might be more to actually see even
though it's like heavily heavily popular populated oh well guys it looks like old

picture of this so I can get some ideas for later for Indiana had some
restoration in 2009 does the traffic almost ruin the mood

what was the ideal campsite there was no auto travel a roadside motor court you
go to a motel for a dollar to 350 and then they bought the property of the
castle for $3,400 so it's Lincoln Highway right there and here we are at

conveyor belt right now so magnet choices they they have the really flat
ones or they have the more three-dimensional globe dome ones by the
way I know I butchered the name when I came in it's pronounced albanese that's
that's the family name of the candy I honestly I have never heard of it before
I don't think I've ever seen it in the store but I'm gonna be more mindful when
I look around because they are literally making the gummy bears right here in
Indiana which is pretty cool so let me get to the Harvey and I'll show you what
I got what I stocked up on well you wouldn't like it Jax no no no it's
delicious man you wouldn't like it okay so I got a full pound of the twelve
flavor assortment there I got a quarter pound of the green apple and the blue
raspberry and the passionate peach and fresh strawberry and of course my
Albanese magnet right there with the 3d gummy bear it like it this needs to be
clean there yeah you know for whatever reason it seems that youtubers are not
allowed to complain or be negative or even talk about any problems they have
in their life because the outside world just thinks you know hey you guys have
it made you get paid to make videos and that's no work at all we're not gonna
get into the work aspect cuz i don't really care i can't change anybody's
mind you know we can't be negative we're only allowed to share the good times of
our lives any time we talk about our our problems our struggles what we're going
through day to day because people are sitting there watching that video and
they're comparing their lives to what we're doing it's like this guy can't
complain he doesn't pick up 80 pound bags of cement for a living all day you
know and that's that thing that comparison thing so your work is
harder than my work it's harder to do your job you're working hard you deserve
your money more than I do because you're doing something different than I'm doing
and so for the last couple months I have made a strong point to drop all my old
complaining and negativity and just talking about bad things that happen
stuff I can't control but to cut that out or to resolve it somehow by the end
of the video you know but okay I get it my bad days are nothing compared to
everybody else's bad days I get that okay I get it my life's a cakewalk and
everything's just peaches and cream all the time okay it's not but I can't argue
that effect anymore it doesn't matter I'm gonna finish Lincoln Highway either
way one way or another we're gonna make it guys I have downloaded my high
clearance app that I had from two years ago when I was in New York City so I've
got that app I'm gonna utilize Google Maps as well and a couple and all stays
also has a clearance measure so you can plan the route each day not necessarily
the stops of each day but I can plan the route so if I need to go this way and
Lincoln Highway has a 9 or 10 foot bridge somewhere I can go around that
and come back if I need to so there's gonna be a lot of pre night planning as
far as the map for preclearance Heights at least which is no problem I don't
mind but yeah are you pooped Jax you just look like
you had such a tiring day today how about you relax okay actually that
sounds like a good idea I'm gonna go back west about a mile to the Walley
world there and I'm gonna edit Jax is gonna stay at my side and hang out with
me while I work oh maybe multitask and watch last
night's Mariners game that I forgot to watch and that'll get back on the road

point that these gummi bears from albinus albanese had I already forget
Elma nice way better than any other temp it is so much moist flavor in them but
all the flavors are so strong the
I'm out at the place was probably a lot more fun - that's how I narrowed it down
to just those four individual flavors but uh that was a cool stop I don't need
a whole lot of candy well I don't need it I don't need any chocolate like
you'll almost never see me eat chocolate but gummy bears and starbursts and
strawberry frosted sprinkled doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts are also my favorite
