Brazil 2-0 Croatia: Neymar makes goal-scoring return as the Selecao win World Cup warm-up friendly - Duration: 5:56.

Brazil 2-0 Croatia: Neymar makes goal-scoring return as the Selecao win World Cup warm-up friendly

Neymar scored a superb solo goal on his eagerly-anticipated return from injury on Sunday afternoon to inspire Brazil to a 2-0 victory over Croatia in their penultimate World Cup warm-up friendly at Anfield.

Making his first appearance since undergoing surgery on a fractured metatarsal in March after being summoned as a half-time replacement for Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho, the Paris Saint-Germain forward netted a superb solo effort with 69 minutes on the clock.

Receiving possession from Philippe Coutinho - making his maiden return to Merseyside after leaving Liverpool for Barcelona in January - after a brilliant pass from Willian, Neymar weaved his way past three Croatian defenders before smashing an unstoppable effort in off the crossbar from eight yards out.

Fellow substitute Roberto Firmino delighted the home crowd in second-half stoppage-time by lifting the ball over Danijel Subasic following a defence-splitting pass from Casemiro.

Neymar marked his eagerly-anticipated return from injury with a fabulous solo goal for Brazil against Croatia on Sunday.

The 26-year-old weaved his way past three Croatian players before rifling the ball in off the crossbar from eight yards out.

Former Liverpool playmaker Philippe Coutinho shields the ball away from Atletico's Sime Vrsaljko on his return to Anfield.

The 25-year-old was making his first return to Liverpool since leaving for Barcelona in a £142million deal back in January.

Fans marked the occasion with Coutinho masks, which could be seen dotted around the stadium on Sunday.

Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus battles with Milan Badelj and Vedran Corluka during the first half on Merseyside.

City full-back Danilo tries to escape the attentions of Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic on a sunny afternoon in the north west.

Vrsaljko pursues Chelsea attacker Willian as Croatia captain and Champions League winner Luka Modric looks on.

Real Madrid midfield partners Casemiro and Modric, both starters for Los Blancos in Kiev, go head-to-head for possession.

Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic, appointed to replace Ante Cacic in October 2017, issues instructions to his players.

Vrsaljko competes in the air with Fernandinho, who was cautioned for a high boot during a feisty first-half affair.

Neymar makes his first appearance for club or country since February after replacing Fernandinho in Croatia friendly.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward managed 45 minutes after recovering from surgery on a fractured metatarsal.

BRAZIL (4-3-3): Alisson; Danilo, Silva, Miranda (Marquinhos, 65), Marcelo (Filipe Luis, 60); Paulinho, Casemiro, Fernandinho (Neymar, 45); Willian (Taison, 82), Gabriel Jesus (Firmino, 60), Coutinho (Fred, 82).

Subs not used: Geromel, Douglas Costa, Cassio, Fagner, Ederson.

Booked: Fernandinho.

Goals: Neymar, Firmino.

CROATIA (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko (Jedvaj, 87), Lovren, Corluka (Caleta-Car, 52), Vida; Rakitic (Bradaric, 83), Badelj (Brozovic, 61); Modric (Kovacic, 58), Perisic, Rebic (Pjaca, 64); Kramaric.

Subs not used: Strinic, L Kalinic, Mitrovic, N Kalinic, Mandzukic, Pivaric.

England boss Gareth Southgate hints Jordan Pickford will be World Cup No 1 - Health tips - Duration: 5:09.

England boss Gareth Southgate hints Jordan Pickford will be World Cup No 1

Gareth Southgate dropped a heavy hint that Jordan Pickford will be England's World Cup No 1 by selecting him for the victory over Nigeria, but declined to publicly settle the issue with one more friendly to go.

Southgate has yet to reveal whether Pickford or Jack Butland will be his first-choice goalkeeper in Russia but the scales tipped heavily in the Everton man's favour as he was given 90 minutes in the 2-1 win at Wembley.

That was only Pickford's third senior cap, meaning another outing would surely be beneficial if he is to don the gloves against Tunisia on June 18.

But when invited to put the issue to bed he demurred, opening a slim chance for Butland to play the final warm-up fixture at Elland Road on Thursday.

'We'll give consideration to who plays in goal against Costa Rica over the next 24 or 36 hours,' he said.

'But I was really pleased with what Jordan did.

Normally, when you play for England, there's not an awful lot of opportunity to produce a lot of saves.

But his decision making on crosses, the punch he made, his distribution and calmness to slide passes into midfield.

that was really important to the way we want to play.

He can be very pleased with his performance.'.

Barring a late change of heart, that endorsement should see the 24-year-old start his first competitive England match in the Group G opener in Volgograd.

Another player who did his chances no harm at all was Tottenham's Kieran Trippier.

He only emerged as a starter at right wing-back when Southgate decided to utilise first choice Kyle Walker as part of a central three in March.

The selection of the uncapped but precocious Trent Alexander-Arnold means he has fresh competition too, but his corner provided the opening goal for Gary Cahill on Saturday, moments after testing the keeper with a sharp free-kick.

Those at Spurs have long been aware of Trippier's crossing skills and corner-taking prowess and they could yet be important in the Three Lions' World Cup bid.

'His quality on the ball is outstanding,' said Southgate.

'There were two set-plays, the one just before the goal - a free-kick bang on the money - then the corner for Gary.

'It was a great delivery.

But we also know his quality on the ball when he's in the final third.

'Kieran has outstanding quality and that kind of profile in that position is very important.

England would be content if they kick off their campaign with an identical result against Tunisia, but Southgate was quick to stress that the game was not scheduled as a direct dress rehearsal.

'We didn't choose this game to replicate exactly what Tunisia would do,' he said.

'We play most of our matches against European teams, so this was a good opportunity to play an African team.

'Tunisia play different to the style of play to Nigeria.

They keep the ball very well and press very well.

They're ranked one place below us in the rankings.

We'll have to be spot on in our preparation and performance to win.'.

What is gaslighting? | Riley J. Dennis - Duration: 6:44.

Hey everyone!

Today, we're gonna talk about gaslighting.

Chances are you've heard this phrase thrown around at some point -- probably either in

reference to an abusive relationship, or in reference to how Trump talks to the American public.

So what exactly is gaslighting?

Essentially, it's a method of psychological manipulation where Person A tries to get Person

B to doubt their lived experiences, memories, and knowledge.

This allows A to control B, because B doesn't know what to believe and can't trust their

own perception of reality.

Because of this deep-seeded doubt, B feels like they have to believe whatever Person

A says -- even if it's a complete lie.

Unfortunately, it's a very effective manipulation technique because gaslighters tend to be relentless

in their position, meaning that the more you question them and point out their lies, the

further they commit to those lies.

It's easy to think that you can trust your own perception of reality when you're not

being gaslit, but when someone is so adamantly telling you things that clash with what you

know to be true, it's really hard not to doubt yourself at least a little bit.

And that's all gaslighters need is to sow enough doubt that you're not 100% sure you

can trust what you know.

In abusive relationships, gaslighting can be a powerful weapon.

Even those who are aware of what gaslighting is can fall victim to it.

So I think it's important not to blame gaslighting victims for what has happened to them.

Just because you, someone outside of the situation, can see how gaslighting is occurring, that

doesn't necessarily mean that someone in that situation can see it as clearly.

But it is also important to be aware of what gaslighting can look like so that you can

do your best to identify it in your relationships and not tolerate it.

So what are some example of gaslighting?

Oftentimes, this technique can be used to cover up a mistake that was made by the gaslighter.

Let's say that there are two people in a romantic relationship, Person A and Person

B. In this scenario, Person A stays at home during the day while Person B works from 9 to 5.

So in the morning, Person B wants to take the trash out on their way to work, but they forget.

So when they get home, instead of taking responsibility for forgetting, admitting that they messed

up, and taking out the trash -- they decide to blame Person A. They say to Person A, "I

asked you to take out the trash while I was gone like 3 times this morning, why didn't you do it?"

Now, that definitely never happened.

B never asked A to take out the trash.

But because B is so forcefully insisting that they did, A starts to wonder whether that

did happen and they just forgot.

So A apologizes for messing up and takes out the trash.

After all, in A's mind, it is *possible* that B said something that morning and A just forgot.

That's a classic case of gaslighting -- making someone else doubt their reality by using

the uncertainty of their memory against them.

Though it can also be used even more maliciously.

Maybe B didn't even forget to take out the trash, it was just their plan all along to

guilt A into doing it.

And as their relationship continues, B can continue to use this tactic to make A doubt

even larger aspects of their life.

Maybe after years of B physically abusing A, the two of them sit down together to talk

about their relationship, and B says, "I would never hurt you.

That's not who I am.

You've really made it sound so much more dramatic than it was.

We've always been so happy!"

This kind of gaslighting can make people question if they ever really were abused, which is

terrible because then they can't even deal with that abuse or get away from it or move

on from it, because they're not even 100% it all happened the way they remember.

Another common gaslighting technique, though, is to spin it back at the victim and blame

them for the problem.

Gaslighters are always on the offense, because if you keep hurling baseless accusations,

the victim has to spend so much time defending themselves from those accusations that they

can't even address the real abuse from the gaslighter.

Following the same example from earlier, where Person B was denying that they ever hurt Person

A, B could continue by saying, "I can't believe you would accuse me of hitting you!

Why do you hate this relationship?

We do you want it to fail?

Why don't you believe in us?"

And that type of language immediately puts A on the defensive.

So now they're not only questioning what happened to them, but they're questioning

if maybe they were the problem all along.

Gaslighting is such a sick, twisted manipulation tactic that is so hard recognize because we

all have trouble trusting our memory.

I mean, our memory is fragile and malleable and often unreliable -- every time you remember

something, you change little things about that memory -- but gaslighters take advantage

of that to the extreme.

Because even though our memories can have their issues, overall we do tend to remember

general things that happened and how we felt during them.

And while this kind of manipulation is common in abusive relationships, it can also show

up in friendships, among coworkers, and even among politicians.

Trump is notorious for gaslighting all of the US.

The easiest example is the size of the crowd at his inauguration.

We have photos proving it was smaller than he said it was, and yet to this day he continues

to insist it was larger, just flat out lying to everyone's faces -- trying to get them

to question their reality by sticking to his lies no matter what.

And it works -- he has supporters who will defend the crowd size and make elaborate excuses for it.

When this all happened, there was a whole national conversation about the size of the

inauguration crowd, which shouldn't even have been a thing because we know for a fact

how many people attended.

But the fact that it was even talked about for so long was what Trump wanted.

It wasn't really about convincing everyone that the crowd was bigger than they thought

-- it was about sowing doubt.

He wants you to think, "Well, maybe those photos were edited," or "Maybe everyone

who was there lied about the crowd size."

He doesn't have to convince every American that he's right, he just needs to make everyone

a *little* bit unsure about what is true.

No amount of proof can dissuade Trump from his lies, and that's what makes him such

a strong gaslighter.

The more he sticks to his nonsense lies, the more people in the media start to ask, "Well,

maybe there *is* something there," even though there obviously isn't.

Now, the crowd size issue is by no means the worst gaslighting he's ever done, it's

just a good example.

That's how gaslighting works.

It's not just about getting you to question the big stuff, it's also about getting you

to question the smaller things that don't really matter as much.

It makes you question your entire reality.

Like, to pick one of many examples, there's the fact that Trump led the birtherism movement

for years, being racist as hell and calling for Obama's birth certificate.

But then in 2016, he tried to blame Clinton for birtherism and acted like he'd been

innocent all along.

Trump's been a pro at the gaslighting game for years, making Americans doubt everything

they've experienced, regardless of whether it's a thing as simple as crowd sizes or

as serious as claiming Obama wasn't born in the US.

So that's what gaslighting is, but where does the term come from?

It comes from a play that was turned into a movie in the 1940s where a husband tries

to convince his wife that she's crazy.

In the movie, he dims the gas lights in the house, and when she points out that they're

dimmer than normal, he says that they're the same brightness and that she's imagining things.

The term gaslighting as been in usage since the 1960s, so it's by no means a new word.

It's just one that has cropped up in a lot of stories lately largely because of how right-wing

politicians continue to gaslight the American public.

And while it is important to recognize how gaslighting works in the political sphere

so that we can fight against it, it's also important to be aware of how gaslighting works

so that you can identify it in your own relationships.

That's certainly not easy, and it's not your fault if you're gaslit by someone else,

but hopefully by understanding this tactic and how it works, you can be confident in

what you know to be true, and you can call out gaslighters for exactly what they're doing.

Death Anxiety | Death Comes for All - Duration: 10:52.

You are going to die.

I mean like, not today… maybe, I- Probably not today.

Can we?

You are going to die.

That makes it sound like I'm gonna do it.

I'm not gonna do it… at least not on purpose anyway.

You know what…

You likely experienced a wide range of emotions when I told you that you're going to die.

Anger, fear, aggression.

The dark side of the force are they.

Death is our inevitable end, and like it or not, it shapes who we are and how we approach

the rest of life.

Probably a lot more than you might think.

Most people prefer to avoid or dismiss the topic entirely because it evokes negative

emotions.

Even I put off writing this script for as long as possible.

This is Death Anxiety and it drives almost everything about us, from our internal thoughts

to our external interactions.

It's important to note that this is different from the fear of death.

Which, when you really boil it down is just the fear of the biological pain associated

with death.

As proof, if we had a choice, most of us would prefer to die quickly or in our sleep.

Death Anxiety, on the other hand, is the existential dread we feel when faced with the fact that

our consciousness will end.

And when it comes to that, nobody truly wants to die.

I know a few of you are going to point to suicidal people and say that I'm wrong – but

no.

They feel that death is the only option they have left to escape their life circumstances.

Given the choice, if you were to hand them the solution to all of their problems, they

would probably choose that over dying.

They just want an end to their suffering and they feel this is the only way.

There's also a small group who want their death to impart suffering on others – the

"I'll show them" types.

But we all know that you don't get to come back and watch your epic revenge fantasy unfold.

I hate this show so much…

No religion teaches that you get to come back and watch the end credits scene.

Or that you get to talk to and interact with it – F*** this show!

Sorry… this is one of the ways we cope with death: by telling each other, and ourselves,

that death isn't really the end.

I didn't think it would end this way.

End?

No, the journey doesn't end here.

You go to your favorite place in the whole world, and everyone you ever loved and has

ever loved you will be there.

Well, that's not so bad.

No, no it isn't.

If there is more after you die, then there is nothing to fear.

The afterlife, or reincarnation, or whatever other stories we tell each other are ways

to dissipate the existential despair we have about death.

But as much as we tell each other these stories or believe them down to our very core, we

don't necessarily act like it.

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, nobody throws a party to celebrate their free ticket

to paradise.

Or wherever else they happen to be going, but…

I'll get to that later.

When you're giving CPR to someone, you don't say Just let go!

Let go!

That would be terrifying, that's like the worst thing you possibly could say in that

moment.

We just had a near-life experience!

Near life experience, right so let's take a moment to talk about what most people would

call that – a near death experience.

The common trope is that your life flashes before your eyes or something but there is

a small group of people who were clinically dead and claim to have passed over to the

other side and returned.

If you read the little thing, these people don't actually die.

Their brain is still active and the fact that everyone's story of what they see differs

significantly should tell you what's going on.

NDEs are no more reliable than dreams when it comes to what happens when you cross over…

if you cross over.

It's a form of denial really, not in the sense that you're not going to die at all

– even though there are people who seem to want to think that – but in the sense

that death isn't the end.

And before you go thinking that this idea is exclusive to faith and religion, it's

creeped into our science fiction as well.

Whether you're uploaded to some permanent vacation destination or have an implant that

can transfer from body to body.

By the way, in both of those cases, permanent death is still a real possibility.

And the funny part is, no matter what I say here, there are still some of you who think

there's a real possibility that you will live forever or continue on in some way.

This is called Terror Management Theory, and it's one of the ways we internally deny

death or at the very least, find some enduring meaning to life.

Most people do this by identifying as part of something greater than themselves in the

hope that it will continue on after they've died – like a religion or a country or through

youtube videos.

So when those things come under threat, it's also a threat to their everlasting identity

and they respond with anger.

For those of you keeping track we're on number two now.

Whenever the idea of our own death comes up, we respond with anger.

This can range anywhere from outright violence to subconscious aggression.

One of the most interesting studies I know about showed that judges who were just reminded

of death prior to sentencing gave harsher punishments – whether it was more prison

time or larger fines.

So, if in between the guilty verdict and your sentencing, everyone breaks for lunch and

the judge happens to see a commercial for life insurance…

You're screwed.

I hope it's not an election year or you're double screwed.

Aside from being reminded that you're going to die, being told that your version of what

happens after you die might be wrong is the basis for most wars in history.

It's one thing to be confronted with someone who admits they don't know or thinks that

nothing happens; it's another for someone to tell you that they know, and you're wrong.

This comes back to Terror Management Theory, it's a direct threat to your cultural identity

and the peace of mind that comes from your death coping strategy.

It makes people angry to hear that what they think happens after they die is incorrect.

But not only that, in the other story, they're either going to the less-awesome version of

the afterlife or being reincarnated as some lesser being.

Unless you're able to make some sort of deal.

For some reason, in our culture, we've decided that Death is some sort of negotiator or gambler.

You can weasel your way out of death with a game of chess or battleship or by collecting

his soul contracts for him.

F*** this game, f***!

So I suppose this is a good time to bring up the Kubler-Ross Model, better known as

the five stages of grief.

Some of my psychology friends are going to scoff at this, saying it's not proven or

it's not linear, but whatever.

It's still a good model to teach the subject.

So after you're done being in denial or being angry about some impossible carrot level…

you get to bargaining.

Now this doesn't necessarily mean challenging death or the devil to some battle of wits.

It can also involve telling your doctor "please I'll pay anything" or just mentally pleading

your case.

"If you let me live, I swear I'll stop spoiling movies on facebook."

When that obviously doesn't work – because people who spoil movies go to a special circle

of hell, you enter the depression stage.

Now this topic is huge and there are entire channels dedicated to it, so I'll just make

this one point.

There is a big difference between being depressed and being sad.

Sadness is a temporary state, you are sad about a specific thing.

F*** But while sadness is an emotion, depression is a lifestyle.

There can be a singular catalyst, but then it effects everything else in your life.

"I'm so worthless, I can't even poor milk right.

I don't deserve to know who Rey's parents are."

That's depression, it infects everything that you used to enjoy.

It shouldn't be hard to see why dying people might experience this.

But after that, comes acceptance.

Knowing, and obviously accepting, that you are going to die.

There's a certain weight lifted off of your shoulders when you've reached acceptance.

Just a side note, one of the worst things that can happen to a person is to have gone

through all of the stages and arrived at acceptance, only for death not to come.

Many people who have had that happen end up in a deep depression and sometimes committing

suicide.

Imagine having to go through all of those emotions and process your grief – just to

find out that you have to do it all over again later.

For some, it can also give them a rather depressing cavalier attitude towards the rest of life.

"What does it matter, I thought I was going to die anyway."

But for most people, reaching acceptance means being at peace and reflecting on their life

in their final days.

A big part of that is asking yourself whether you've served a purpose or that you've

found some meaning.

Viktor Frankl tackles this subject in his book Man's Search for Meaning, and a few

youtube philosophers have put their own spin on it.

Youtube philosophers… what strange times we're living in.

But another aspect of Death Anxiety is worrying about your legacy, or how you'll be remembered

after you die.

I don't want to be remembered, I want to be alive.

Okay, well… barring that, people generally want to be remembered as good.

There's a weird transformation that occurs when someone is dying.

Everyone, regardless of who they were in life, is good.

If you've ever worked a retail or fast food job, you know that at least half of the population

is made up of jerks.

Yet every dead person is an angel, why is that?

Because it's what we want – we want to be remembered as good.

So it's an accepted cultural norm not speak ill of the death.

And an expectation to forgive the dead and dying for any wrongdoings, no matter how grievous.

Once they're dead, we'll have a giant celebration in their honor – just don't

bring up that one thing we all know they did.

Or have a funeral for them where everyone says nice things, even though no religion

tea- and they get to come back and watch it?!

F*** this show!

How did this get a second season?!

Before you get all mad at me in the comments, just remember that she's a fictional character

mmk.

Mmkay.

We tell each other that everyone who is dying is good and gets to go to the nice version

of the afterlife – because that's what we want, that's how we want to be remembered.

We don't want people to remember how we died, or that one controversy from the early

90s, or that time that we chewed up an expensive pair of running shoes….

Ugh...

I thought I was done with this stuff.

No, everyone is good and all is forgiven.

We trick ourselves into thinking we won't die or that death isn't the end and that

everyone is remembered fondly because that's what we hope happens to us.

So the next time someone tells you that some day soon people will live forever or that

death is just another path, one that we all must take, don't worry about it, because-

Nothing means anything and we're all going to die.

… dude…

We're coming up on the two year anniversary for the channel so I've put a link to a

A Study Reveals Your Body Knows When Death Is Near, And It All Begins In The Nose - Duration: 5:12.

you

death of a loved one can hit us hard it leaves us feeling lost and dejected in

life it is the most difficult thing in the world to cope from as it leaves a

mark on us mentally emotionally and spiritually you can't just expect to

cope from it in a day it takes time to heal what is broken by the loss of the

loved one it even takes years to fully come out of the mental trauma you must

have endured during that time however some may argue it is a coincidence while

others are confident people know when death is near it is natural to try and

understand the death of someone we love or just imagine what happens in those

final moments scientists know when someone dies the

body immediately begins to disintegrate Putra scene for example is a foul and

toxic scent the result of decomposition researchers have come to realize humans

subconsciously recognize this putrifying odor not only that the scent when

released causes an immediate response animals have the ability to smell the

odor of others causing them to react accordingly this is identical to sensing

danger whether from a predator or stronger and bigger animal from their

pack a study conducted by our node Wisman from the University of Kent

School of Psychology in Canterbury UK an island sheriff from the Department of

Behavioral Sciences in Arkansas Tech University in Russellville a.k have

discovered animals and humans might not be so different after all

the ability to detect chemical sense is part of survival across the species the

warning of death is revealed through smell to humans putrescine is a

foul-smelling organic chemical compound that is related to category nee both are

produced by the breakdown of amino acids in living and dead organisms meaning it

is a chemical compound released when a body decays

it also has a secondary function as a warning signal people have both a

conscious and subconscious reaction when they are exposed to this odor there were

four different experiments conducted using putrescine ammonia and water to

study people's reaction one of the experiments included Putra seen exposed

at a site people's immediate response was to move away from the area this is

the same response around fight-or-flight reaction when animals sense they are in

real danger there are only two responses fight the threat or run away from it the

study revealed people react the same there are other voters humans respond to

as well like sweat separate studies have shown that sweat taken from people in

fearful situations and exposed for others to smell generated an automatic

and startled reflex we do not know why we like or dislike someone's smell and

we're usually not aware of how scent influences our emotions preferences and

attitudes explain Wisman and Shira it is hard to think of a scent as frightening

say other two leading researchers these scents make people more aware and

vigilant of their surroundings humans natural reaction to danger is not

to face it and fight people tend to avoid any type of confrontation whether

it's physical or verbal for the most part people choose to distance

themselves until fight is the only option on the table the responses may be

different from each other but Putra scene and sex pheromone are based on

scent sex pheromones are chemicals released by

the body to attract a mate while putrescine works as a warning signal

putrescine signals a different type of message than pheromones but people's

responses to putrescine avoidance and hostility do seem indeed to be the

opposite of responses to many sexual pheromones explained researchers during

the study people were not aware they had a negative reaction to the scent people

are not familiar with putress Essien and do not consciously associate it with

death or fear admits Wisman and Shira

I had so many chances I could never go through

I spend so much time I can never get back

Could wait forever

But then I won't learn

That memories fade no matter how much it hurts

They know me inside

I feel my heart try

I'm tearing at the walls in the corners of my mind

Want to tell you just to hold on

Tonight it's been so long

Hold on

I still regret every word

That day I never said

"Up" | Creepypasta - Duration: 5:02.

Do you know what a Cordyceps is?

I didn't either, until twenty minutes ago.

It is a family of thousands of different types of fungus, which grow all around the world,

in various rainforests and jungles.

The awful thing about them is that they are parasitic; they grow on other animals.

When an ant happens to run into some spores, the fungus begins to colonize its innards,

starting with its brain.

At some point, the ant will start to act visibly ill, by standing in place and shivering, or

walking in circles.

If a fellow colony member sees it in this condition, it will be dragged to the border

of the colony and exiled. Then, when it is almost over, the ant weakly climbs as high

as it can up the vines, and locks its body on tight.

Finally, it dies, and the fungus emerges from the back of its head, bursting forth like

a long, foul fruit.

After a short time, the little stalk spews forth its own spores, leaving the mummified

and broken ant clinging to the stalk.

Its eye cavities are filled with drying fungus.

I mention this, because last night, when I was up on the roof of my apartment complex,

I found my brother's body.

He had been back from eighteen months on duty in the Philippines for less than three days.

This was the first I had seen him.

My parents called me up the day before yesterday, to tell me that he was on his way up.

They told me he had stayed in his room since he returned home, then suddenly got up and

announced he was on his way to see me.

They thought he was drunk; I thought he would never make it.

He must have come straight up to the roof and died, by the smell of it.

I was just finishing a cigarette, torn up with anxiety and head throbbing.

When the acrid smoke vanished, I caught a whiff of rotting flesh in the hot wind.

It took me just a few minutes before I had found him, face down behind the vents and

fans.

A slimy gray column rose up obscenely from the base of his skull.

A frozen waterfall of roots and tendrils dangled from his eye sockets and mouth.

At the top of the stalk, were small arrangement of feathery wisps, white powder drifting idly

from its tips.

The spores must have drifted over the north side of the building all day.

It was my side of the building.

I came down to my apartment to try to call the police, but my headache was rising to

a feverish throb.

As soon as I got through the door and I reached for the phone, pain flared in my head.

It was so bad that I almost passed out.

I have since tried three times, and I can never get my hand on it.

The same thing happens when I try to get up and leave the room.

I feel spines of ice tunneling up into my skull and my limbs lock up and shudder.

The ants, in their last moments, crawl as high up the vines as they can climb.

This is so the spore will spread over more of the colony below.

In the end, the parasite controls the ant with an almost intelligent drive.

God help me.

The pain is almost blinding now.

A new thought has been rising up rhythmically in my head, like a record skipping.

Up.

Up.

Up.

This thought is joined by an image of my office tower.

It is taller than my apartment, the tallest place I can think of.

Although the bulge on the back of my neck is the size of a peach, the skin is stretched

shiny, I am dizzy, and my eyes are cloudy, I think I can make it there.

Up.

No.

I'm sick.

I need help.

The building pulses again in my mind.

The cold wind.

The roof and the sky.

These images and concepts dull the pain momentarily, as they pass through my mind.

I think I can get there.

Up.

Up.

If you live in downtown Chicago, I would get the heck out.

7 Signs and Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency - Duration: 8:34.

7 Signs and Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency.

Magnesium deficiency, also known as hypomagnesemia, is an often overlooked health problem.

While less than 2% of Americans have been estimated to experience magnesium deficiency,

one study suggests that up to 75% are not meeting their recommended intake .

In some cases, deficiency may be underdiagnosed since the obvious signs commonly don't appear

until your levels become severely low.

The causes of magnesium deficiency vary.

They range from inadequate dietary intake to loss of magnesium from the body .

Health problems associated with magnesium loss include diabetes, poor absorption, chronic

diarrhea, celiac disease and hungry bone syndrome.

People with alcoholism are also at an increased risk .

This article lists 7 symptoms of magnesium deficiency.

1.

Muscle Twitches and Cramps.

Twitches, tremors and muscle cramps are signs of magnesium deficiency.

In worst case scenarios, deficiency may even cause seizures or convulsions .

Scientists believe these symptoms are caused by a greater flow of calcium into nerve cells,

which overexcites or hyperstimulates the muscle nerves .

While supplements may relieve muscle twitches and cramps in deficient individuals, one review

concluded that magnesium supplements are not an effective treatment for muscle cramps in

older adults.

Further studies are needed in other groups .

Keep in mind that involuntary muscle twitches may have many other causes.

For example, they may be caused by stress or too much caffeine.

They may also be a side effect of some medications or a symptom of a neurological disease, such

as neuromyotonia or motor neuron disease.

While occasional twitches are normal, you should see your doctor if your symptoms persist.

2.

Mental Disorders.

Mental disorders are another possible consequence of magnesium deficiency.

These include apathy, which is characterized by mental numbness or lack of emotion.

Worsened deficiency may even lead to delirium and coma .

Additionally, observational studies have associated low magnesium levels with an increased risk

of depression .

Scientists have also speculated that magnesium deficiency might promote anxiety, but direct

evidence is lacking .

One review concluded that magnesium supplements might benefit a subset of people with anxiety

disorders, but the quality of the evidence is poor.

Higher quality studies are needed before any conclusions can be reached .

In short, it seems that a lack of magnesium may cause nerve dysfunction and promote mental

problems in some people.

3.

Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disorder characterized by weak bones and an increased risk of bone fractures.

The risk of getting osteoporosis is influenced by numerous factors.

These include old age, lack of exercise and a poor intake of vitamins D and K.

Interestingly, magnesium deficiency is also a risk factor for osteoporosis.

Deficiency might weaken bones directly, but it also lowers the blood levels of calcium,

the main building block of bones .

Studies in rats confirm that dietary magnesium depletion results in reduced bone mass.

Although no such experiments have been done in people, studies have associated poor magnesium

intake with lower bone mineral density .

4.

Fatigue and Muscle Weakness.

Fatigue, a condition characterized by physical or mental exhaustion or weakness, is another

symptom of magnesium deficiency.

Keep in mind that everyone becomes fatigued from time to time.

Typically, it simply means you need to rest.

However, severe or persistent fatigue may be a sign of a health problem.

Since fatigue is a non-specific symptom, its cause is impossible to identify unless it

is accompanied by other symptoms.

Another, more specific sign of magnesium deficiency is muscle weakness, also known as myasthenia

.

Scientists believe the weakness is caused by the loss of potassium in muscle cells,

a condition associated with magnesium deficiency .

Therefore, magnesium deficiency is one possible cause of fatigue or weakness.

5.

High Blood Pressure.

Animal studies show that magnesium deficiency may increase blood pressure and promote high

blood pressure, which is a strong risk factor for heart disease .

While direct evidence is lacking in humans, several observational studies suggest that

low magnesium levels or poor dietary intake may raise blood pressure .

The strongest evidence for the benefits of magnesium comes from controlled studies.

Several reviews have concluded that magnesium supplements may lower blood pressure, especially

in adults with high blood pressure .

Put simply, magnesium deficiency may increase blood pressure, which, in turn, increases

the risk of heart disease.

Nevertheless, more studies are needed before its role can be fully understood.

6.

Asthma.

Magnesium deficiency is sometimes seen in patients with severe asthma .

Additionally, magnesium levels tend to be lower in individuals with asthma than in healthy

people .

Researchers believe a lack of magnesium may cause the buildup of calcium in the muscles

lining the airways of the lungs.

This causes the airways to constrict, making breathing more difficult .

Interestingly, an inhaler with magnesium sulfate is sometimes given to people with severe asthma

to help relax and expand the airways.

For those with life-threatening symptoms, injections are the preferred route of delivery

.

However, evidence for the effectiveness of dietary magnesium supplements in asthmatic

individuals is inconsistent .

In short, scientists believe severe asthma may be a symptom of magnesium deficiency in

some patients, but further studies are needed to investigate its role.

7.

Irregular Heartbeat.

Among the most serious symptoms of magnesium deficiency is heart arrhythmia, or irregular

heartbeat .

The symptoms of arrhythmia are mild in most cases.

Often, it has no symptoms at all.

However, in some people, it may cause heart palpitations, which are pauses between heartbeats.

Other possible symptoms of arrhythmia include lightheadedness, shortness of breath, chest

pain or fainting.

In the most severe cases, arrhythmia may increase the risk of stroke or heart failure.

Scientists believe that an imbalance of potassium levels inside and outside of heart muscle

cells may be to blame, a condition associated with magnesium deficiency .

Some patients with congestive heart failure and arrhythmia have been shown to have lower

magnesium levels than healthy people.

Treating these patients with magnesium injections significantly improved their heart function

.

Magnesium supplements may also reduce symptoms in some patients with arrhythmia .

The Bottom Line.

Magnesium deficiency is a widespread health problem.

Some studies suggest that 75% of Americans do not meet their dietary requirements for

magnesium.

However, true deficiency is much less common — less than 2%, according to one estimate.

The symptoms of magnesium deficiency are usually subtle unless your levels become severely

low.

Deficiency may cause fatigue, muscle cramps, mental problems, irregular heartbeat and osteoporosis.

If you believe you may have a magnesium deficiency, your suspicions can be confirmed with a simple

blood test.

You should speak with your doctor to rule out other possible health problems.

Whatever the outcome, try to regularly eat plenty of magnesium-rich whole foods, such

as nuts, seeds, grains or beans.

These foods are also high in other healthy nutrients.

Including them in your diet not only lowers your risk of magnesium deficiency, but it

also promotes your overall health.
