SWORN ENEMIES: The US has announced new sanctions on North Korea amid rising war tensions. The official has said there is "an ongoing review" over whether Kim Jong-uns homeland could be officially branded a terrorist-funding nation.
Susan Thornton, the acting assistant secretary of state for East Asia, told Washington colleagues that North Korea could be "added to the list of state sponsors of terrorism".
The statement comes hot on the heels of renewed threats from the hermit state in the wake of desperate calls for nuclear disarmament.
MILITARY MIGHT: The hermit state shows off its Pukkuksong ballistic missile on April 15. Ms Thornton told a Senate sub-committee hearing: We have been working on coming up with a new list of entities that we think are violating.
Asked whether sanctions could come within a month, she said: I think youll see something fairly soon, yes. And concerns are growing as more evidence of weapons preparation activity has been seen in the west of North Korea.
Two American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that over the past week intelligence has spotted equipment – possibly for launching an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) or an intermediate-range missile – moving into Kusong.
