What's that?

You must have heard many times about protein.

But what really is protein?

Proteins are organic molecules made up of amino acids - the building blocks of life.

They are critical for our body's functioning.

There are two main categories of amino acids in the body.

Essential Amino Acids

The body can't manufacture these essential amino acids, and thus we must consume in our diets.

Nonessential Amino Acids

The body can usually make for itself.

Where do we get our proteins from?

Meat

Fish

Poultry

Milk

Cheese

Beans

Lentils

Soy like tofu

Nuts

Complete protein means you get all of the amino acids including essential amino acids.

Meat, fish, and chicken contain all 20 amino acids.

Incomplete proteins lack some amino acids, meaning foods like nuts, vegetables, rice, etc don't have all 20 amino acids.

It's important for us to get all 20 amino acids for our body's functioning.

Why? Why do we have to eat protein?

Our bodies need proteins and amino acids to produce important molecules in our body.

With an enzyme, chemical reactions go much faster than they would without the enzyme

Amino acids are also responsible for producing hormones.

The brain uses neurotransmitters to tell your heart to beat, your lungs to breathe, and your stomach to digest

Amino acids also produce antibodies, which is critical for our immune system.

These are very important molecules!

Without an adequate protein intake, our bodies can't function well at all.

Protein helps replace worn out cells, transports various substances throughout the body, and aids in growth and repair.

That's why you always hear about protein in fitness community.

You'd need more protein to repair and recover faster.

Consuming protein can also increase levels of the hormone glucagon, and glucagon can help to control body fat

How much protein do we need?

The basic recommendation for protein intake is 0.8 grams per kilogram (or around 0.36 g per pound) of body mass in untrained, generally healthy adults.

For instance, a 150 lb (68 kg) person would consume around 58 grams a day.

For people doing high intensity training, protein needs might go up to about 1.4-2.0 g/kg (or around 1 g/lb) of body mass.

For example, I weigh 175 lbs. I would need to consume around 175 g/lb for optimal.

If you overeat protein, this extra protein can be converted into sugar or fat in the body.

However, protein isn't as easily or quickly converted as carbohydrates or fat, because of the thermic effect (the amount of energy require to digest, absorb, transport and store protein).

You might have heard the statement that a high protein intake harms the kidneys

This is a myth. A fairly high protein intake – up to 2.8 g/kg (1.2 g/lb) – does not seem to impair kidney status and renal function in people with healthy kidneys

Make sure to consume enough protein!

CLUBBERS suffered chemical burns on their hands and faces after a mysterious liquid dripped from a dancefloor smoke machine.

Shauna McFadden says she suffered burns to her head and her pal was burnt on her shoulder.

Terrified partygoers claim two victims have been left permanently scarred following the incident at Broadway Boulevard nightclub in Llandudno, North Wales, on Saturday night.

Police have launched an investigation but dismissed claims it was an acid attack.

that while dancing some liquid from the smoke machine had dripped on her hand which caused irritation and redness.

The fluid used in the smoke machines is generally water based and harmless. The smoke machines generate the smoke by heating this liquid.

In a message posted on Facebook, the nightclub said: At the end of Saturday evening a customer brought to our attention

Furious Lois Jones hit out at the club over their response. She wrote: Didnt know water burns could burn a chunk out of my shoulder!.

Llandudno clubbers left with chemical burns on their faces and hands after liquid dripped on them from a smoke machine.

Good luck to them when they get my medical report that confirms that there was alkaline burning my skin! Livid.

Lois added: A bit of hot water doesnt eat your skin away, theres a difference between a water burn and my whole shoulder peeling off!.

Fellow clubber Kirin Jones says she alerted staff to the leaking machine and accused the club of playing down the incident.

She wrote: Youve forgotten to mention that the harmful substance has burnt another girls face and anothers shoulder, which will leave them permanently scarred.

Even when I did bring it to your attention that a liquid had burnt my finger, both the manager and the first aider spoke patronisingly to me,

telling me theres no way it couldve been the smoke machine and it mustve been something thrown off the balcony.

They even had the cheek to patronise my friend for being a student nurse. Either way youre missing the point here, through no fault of our own individuals have suffered burns due to a harmful substance which leaked on your premises.

Im just lucky mine is on my hand as others werent so lucky. The least you can do is apologise.. Shauna McFadden says she suffered burns to her head and her pal was burnt on her shoulder.

She wrote: If that went In my eye which is was only cm away from, what would be the case then??. Would that make it serious enough???.

People have genuinely been hurt by whatever was leaking out that machine and regardless of what it was, how long was it faulty for?.

A spokesman confirmed the incident but said the nightclub had nothing more to add to the Facebook post.

The club has since stopped using all smoke machines but remains open.

The incident was at Broadway Boulevard nightclub in Llandudno, North Wales, on Saturday night.

Chief Inspector Sharon McCairn told The Daily Post: We are currently reviewing what action needs to be taken but it is not believed that anyone is responsible for any kind of acid attack.

"An investigation into the exact cause is being carried out with the full cooperation of the Broadway Boulevard club in Llandudno.

LOVE Islands Alex Beattie has been branded brave and inspiring by fans after he revealed his secret heartache at being bullied as a child – and how he finally learned to be confident in himself.

The 22-year-old personal trainer, who was known for his quiet disposition in the villa, opened up about not having the best journey through childhood.

Alex Beattie opened up about being bullied as a child and finding his confidence in a candid Instagram message to fans.

In a moving and candid message on Instagram, the hunky reality star confessed that he used to hate having his photo taken and suffered from a lack of confidence as a child because he was quieter and skinnier than his classmates.

Posting a selfie of himself at a photography studio, he explained how hed gone from being bullied to someone confident enough to appear on one of the summers most-watched TV shows.

I used to hate my photo taken and its taken me years to get to this point, he said.

I have not had the best journey through childhood, being bullied, lack of confidence, feeling too skinny, not being the loudest guy in the class etc. But I have since realised that it is totally okay and normal to be like that.

His remarks came after he was branded quiet by Love Island viewers, in comparison to some of the more outgoing and dramatic islanders.

Love Island fans often called Alex quiet in the villa compared to the other outspoken islanders.

He is now a qualified personal trainer after turning to exercise to boost his confidence.

Alex told fans that his confidence levels changed when he started training at a gym, leading him to become the qualified PT he is today.

The whole reason I started training was to make me feel better about myself, to be happy in my own skin and, God, did it help my confidence, he said.

He urged fans to find what makes them happy in life and embrace it – and not listen to critics who dont always have their best interests at heart.

We all need to learn who and what makes us happy and I believe I have found that, he said.

Do what you love no matter how many people question you or think they have a better idea of what you should be doing.

Alex finished Love Island in fifth place with girlfriend Montana Brown, but The Sun exclusively revealed they split after the show.

With fellow Love Island star Chris Hughes. Alex added that hell always embrace a healthy and positive lifestyle and hell use his newfound Love Island fame to help others unlock their inner confidence.

For me to feel good I need time to train and eat well, he said. I need to spend as much time with family and those I care about and be around enthusiastic and positive people.

I get pleasure from making others feel good about themselves and seeing their progression.

That will always be my aim with this newfound reach I have.

Alexs message struck a chord with his 633k followers, with thousands of them rushing to like the comment in minutes.

Many agreed with his words and others assured him there is nothing wrong with being the quiet person in the room.

One wrote: Its okay not to be loud. Some people are quiet like you and thats okay..

Another said: Thats brave of you to open up like that and it will help a lot of people that feel like that right now.

You are doing something positive with your new found fame..

she was half-topless in front of her actual bosses, it gets worse – Halle seemed totally unaware that her shirt had flopped open.

Didn't she feel a breeze? Didn't anyone think to tell her? It's making us nervous just thinking about it.

Then, when Halle cuddled up to co-star Sage Correa, it happened again. It feels like Halle's stylist might need to invest in a few safety pins, right?.

Halle finally seemed to notice her fashion disaster – and pulled her shirt shut again – and managed to smile through the rest of the photocall.
