Youtube daily report Apr 16 2018

[♪ INTRO ]

When you see an article with tens of thousands of retweets and an exaggerated headline that

you don't agree with, it's easy to blame fake news.

And while it might seem like nothing more than a meme, fake news is a real thing.

Misinformation spreads across the Internet like wildfire, and might even spread more

quickly than real news.

But why?

Well, it all comes down to human psychology and how our brains deal with the new information.

Scientists have been studying the cognitive basis of believing false information for a

long time.

Studies going back to the 1970s have looked at how people view new information that goes

against things that they've already been told.

For example, in one 1975 study, high school and college students were asked to compare

two suicide notes and identify the real one.

Most students did okay — they could sometimes identify the real note, but not all the time.

But then some students were told that they were either really good or really bad at the

task.

Later, the researchers revealed that they lied and clarified that, really, everyone

just did okay.

But students still thought that they were better or worse at the task than they actually

were — the lies stuck with them.

Along with other studies on everything from economic decision-making to medical information,

all this research shows that humans aren't very logical.

Even when we're given information that should adjust our beliefs, like learning something

is a straight-up lie, it's hard for us to let go of how we initially feel about a person

or a situation.

A possible factor in this is confirmation bias: we tend to be more convinced by ideas

that support our beliefs, while opposing information doesn't seem so trustworthy.

This is partially because of what psychologists call motivated reasoning.

Basically, we're motivated to reach conclusions that we want to reach.

Like, if you're diagnosed with a nasty health condition, you're more motivated to find

reasons why the test might be wrong than reasons to agree with it.

It's better for you if you're not actually sick.

On top of that, we tend to believe that our views are correct and other people are wrong,

especially if their views disagree with ours.

This is called naive realism and makes it hard for us to separate facts and opinions.

These psychological patterns show that our brains can be pretty easily led astray by

misinformation.

But this doesn't completely explain how and why fake news goes viral.

Part of the problem might be the fact that, according to a pretty comprehensive survey,

over half of U.S. adults get at least some news from social media.

There's so much information, and it can be hard to tell which sources are credible.

Like, a blog post about how coconut water makes you live longer probably isn't fact-checked

like a scientific press release, but it might make for a viral tweet.

And social media companies are motivated to promote whatever gets the most traffic and

attention, which isn't necessarily what's true.

This could also play into the illusory truth effect: the idea that we tend to believe information

we're exposed to repeatedly, whether or not it's true.

A 2016 study at Yale, shared on the open-access platform SSRN, tested for this effect.

They exposed participants to both real and fake news headlines and then distracted them

with demographic questions about themselves.

Later in the same session or after a week, participants were presented with more headlines.

And they rated stories they'd seen before as more accurate — even pretty implausible

ones.

For example, one of the fake headlines was about a nationwide ban on all TV shows with

gay relationships.

This effect kind of makes sense — when a whole bunch of people keep talking about the

same story, it seems to have more credibility than if one random dude was shouting it on

a street corner.

But these headlines have to be shared for a reason.

And fake news actually seems to be shared more than real news.

A study published in Science in March 2018 looked at how fake news is spread using social

media, with a massive longitudinal data set following Twitter stories from 2006 through

2017.

It included over 125,000 stories shared by around 3 million users, and found that fake

news spreads farther and faster than the truth.

This was especially true for political news, compared to other categories like scientific

or economic news.

These results go along with data from Buzzfeed in 2016, showing that false stories were shared

on Facebook more than true stories during the few months leading up to the presidential

election that year.

And, importantly, this Science study found that fake stories are being shared by real

people — not by bot software.

So it's not as simple as blaming Twitter bots for spreading misinformation.

The authors think that the novelty of false headlines could partially explain this trend.

Maybe so many people are retweeting fake news because it's more surprising and interesting

than real news.

In other psychology studies on viral content, the stories that people were more likely to

share made them more emotionally charged — either positively or negatively.

So this idea fits with that pattern.

Now, all of this is pretty...intense.

So how can we resist the influence of false news if it's everywhere and spreads so easily?

Well, one idea is to tag headlines with warnings if third-party fact checkers have found them

to be dubious.

In the 2016 Yale study, this significantly reduced the chances that a headline was perceived

as accurate, even if participants saw it a couple times.

Another tactic is to look more carefully at news sources.

It's easy to lean into confirmation bias when you're arguing with your Aunt Sue on

Facebook and looking up sources to back up what you already think.

But you can dig deeper into news outlets and authors to understand things like what biases

they might have or how they did their research, and think about sources more critically.

And finally, when you see a surprising headline, take a second to reflect on it before you

click on the "share," " retweet," "show all your friends" buttons.

Shocking stories might seem important to amplify, but they're not necessarily true.

The Internet is a tricky place to navigate these days, I am aware of this, but there

are ways to handle misinformation.

And if enough people and companies keep working on this kind of transparency and critical

thinking, it might help to turn the tide.

people who believe the more we learn about the world, the better we are at being humans.

Mystery eBay PC hides SURPRISE | Nostalgia Nerd - Duration: 12:06.

This is a Mystery PC. I say mystery for 2 reasons. The first is that I found it on eBay

and I don't know what's on it.

- don't ask me exactly why I bought it, but there was something incredibly nostalgic about

that case. It'd been sitting in my basket for months, and despite the fairly high price

tag, I needed to re-home it, and do something with that dormant hardware.

The second is because it's a mish-mash of parts. This case, that CD-ROM drive, the turbo

button. It doesn't fit. The mystery deepens when you realise that an AMD K5 100MHz lies

at the core of this beast. It's clear that this PC has a story. Like many PCs, it's evolved

with the owner. That yellowing isn't discolouration by the hands of UV radiation... it's a part

of this machine's life. Those cracks around the plastic, isn't brittle plastic yielding

to the unforgiving metal frame... it's an intertwining, an evolution of the case. That

dirt in the corner of the floppy drive and around the buttons isn't everyday filth...

it's... yeah, ok it probably is, and that broken plastic is actually a result of the

absolutely inadequate packaging used to send this thing from Hungary to the UK. Because

that's where this metal creation hails from. You can see the badge says "Ready Computers,

1054 Budapest", which is of course the nation's capital city. Why it has a cheese sticker

on the side, I have no idea. But there's no denying that this thing looks the epitome

of 90s retro. All of the 90s in one box.

Opening her up, reveals the timeless circuitry, ready to fire up once more. I mean, there's

also a loose speaker knocking about, but you can see from where it fell. For now I'll just

disconnect it. Here's the AMD K5, secured under a small heat sink and fan. Connecting

it to the outside world is an Intel PCIset chipset and a 1995 Award BIOS. The PCI and

ISA expansion slots are mostly bare, save for a faithful Trident TVGA9000i video card.

An incredibly common range of cards on base PCs, and actually the very first video card

I had myself. Housed in the top expansion bay is that mighty 52X LG CD-ROM drive, interestingly

both the CD-ROM and 270MB Conner Hard Drive underneath are setup as Primary and secondary

IDE master devices, no slaves here. Incidentally, Conner Peripherals were acquired by Seagate

in 1996. All of this splendour is powered by a JNC Power Supply, packing a beefy 200W

of pure POWER.

Ok, we'll need a monitor to find out what secrets lie within. This Dell Trinitron will

do nicely, as will this IBM keyboard. There are no PS/2 or USB ports here, just a good

old fashion DIN connector for the keyboard, and serial connections for whatever else takes

your fancy.

With everything ready, the first problem I encountered was the power switch. It's obviously

taken a hefty knock in transport, which has moved the switch away from the plastic housing.

Pressing it delivers no response and no feedback. Still I can undo this screw and then click

the switch from here.... and there we have, the sweet, sweet sounds of a 90s PC, booting.

Listen to that hard drive spin up, the sounds of the floppy drive. Obviously there's no

BIOS beep as I disconnected the speaker, but it matters not, for all is well.

64MB of RAM means the triple memory check takes a worthy amount of time, but then, we're

in. Well, actually, Windows '95 didn't seem to like the Turbo button being deactivated.

But a click and a reboot and we're good to go. Now, the turbo button was actually designed

to slow faster machines down to run older DOS games... you know, ones without decent

speed compensation, but it would be incredibly rare to find one on a Pentium era machine.

They were generally found on 386 hardware, possibly the odd 486, which tells me that

this machine has almost certainly been expanded past its years.

Actually, before we get back to it, let's have a look at the BIOS.... ohhhh yes. Look

at all these legacy options. I remember spending hours playing around in this exact BIOS, with

these settings. The options fill me with excitement and possibility just looking at them. This

was the early days of Plug & Play and you still had to set aside your options for legacy

cards. Amazing stuff.

Anyway back to Windows loading.

I don't know who set this Windows '95 colour scheme, but he's a masochist, whoever it was.

My first problem is that I think all my mice/mouses are PS/2 or USB... so I thought this might

have been game over (for the time being). But then I remembered that hideous Star Trek

mouse from a few weeks back, and we're good to go. Rather appropriate screen saver for

this device.

Obviously we're booting into a different language as well. We can change some region stuff in

the settings, but to change the OS base language, we'd have to do a re-install. Still, it matters

not, we can muddle our way around.

In terms of resolution, we're operating at good old 640x480 in 256 colours. We can up

it, but, I dunno, this resolution feels kinda homely.

So time to nose about. Immediately in the root direct a SIMSON image, turns out it's

a guy on a motorcycle. Oh christ, look, before I continue I have to change these colours,

it's like being stuck in a sh*t pie. Apparently media files are outside the scope of this

thing. Probably an unsupported format, or missing codec. Anyway, we've got all the usual

Windows programs here... Paint, Wordpad... WOLFENSTEIN 3D.... Now we're talking. Actually

it's a Spear of Destiny demo... the sequel to Wolfenstein. Completely devoid of sound

given both the PC speaker is disconnected and there is no sound card what-so-ever.

I was having troubles with the controls, and it turns out I wasn't joking when I said this

guy was a Masochist. The bloody fire key is set to "M". Who even does that? Anyway, the

game runs fine. It's Spear of Destiny. This would run fine on a 386.

At this point, it seemed better to exit to DOS, as finding things under Windows 95 can

be a pain. Of course, the main problem here is the keyboard is setup for a different country.

But a few lines in the config.sys and autoexec.bat straighten that out. We've still got the wrong

installation language, but at least the keyboard works as it should. To be honest, the only

obvious DOS program I found, simply entitled.. SEGA... tried to run at a resolution too low

for this monitor, so let's go back to Windows. I'm presuming it's probably Sea Quest. I thought

I'd try it in a window, within Windows, but '95 was having none of it, but then I noticed

this folder within the SEA directory.

O M

G

Have we just stumbled across some 90s objectivity right here? Within the suspect directory we

have a Pictures folder, then Decadens, then _ko_, and then we find the folders of truth.

I don't know if this guy was trying to hide this stuff as deep in the directory tree as

possible, but if he was, WHY CALL THE FIRST FOLDER..... THIS? Kinda gives the game away

chum.

So, these are all JPG images. This machine won't open them, and Paint can only deal in

Bitmap or PCX formats, so time to copy some files across to floppy. Just to be fair, I

thought I'd take an array of files. Some of that... oooo, yeah, some that too. Great.

and after loading them up on my PC. I CAN INDEED CONFIRM. FILTH. Oooooo, oh hello. Wow.

Yep, it's what we thought chaps. Of course it is. But I'm not going to display any here

or indeed mention it by name, because this is Youtube and THIS ISN'T THE TIME OR THE

PLACE.

I don't think we're going to top that, but it did

make me want to search deeper, for other suspect directories. All I really found was Doom,

disguised as Toca Touring Car Championship for whatever reason. Maybe Tibi was happy

to keep his explicit photo collection for all to see, but wanted to cover up he was

playing a game with demons. WHO CAN POSSIBLY TELL. Doom runs fine, even under windows,

although why it's hidden in this bizarre directory is beyond me. There didn't seem to be anything

else of value in there.

There were a few more interesting program on here. Daytona didn't work, but we've got

Windows Commander, which was always a handy file navigation utility. In the recent documents

folder there were some documents, in a language I don't understand. I presume that these are

all the work of our friend Tibi. Who could tell, or possibly know. To be honest, at this

point I was bored. We'd peaked with the hidden folder

and now it was time to shut this beauty back down.

I have plans for it. Great plans. All of which I will share with you all in due course.

In the mean time, thank you for joining me on this Mystery PC investigation. It's been

a blast.

11 Minutes & 14 Seconds of Silence (With English subtitles) | PierreG ASMR - Duration: 11:15.

Hello.

Let me put my earphones on.

I like them. Old-school style.

10 minutes of silence. That's the plan.

OK. I'm ready.

You can check if you wish.

By the way, I decided to make this video after watching one minute of the 11 minutes of silence by Good Mythical Morning.

But not only.

My video might be a "funny" version of Marina Abramović's work: "The Artist is Present".

I look at you.

Let's breath.

Some ASMR sounds.

SMILE.

That was a kiss. Or not. Just a mouth moving.

Beard scratching.

Fabric sound.

Relax relax.

I remember, in a distant past.

Very distant. Wait, I need to brush my beautiful eyebrows.

(A bit tired, but smile)

Who's the boss? Not me, don't worry.

Look at that beard.

Closer.

Are you still watching?

No, I wasn't doing something weird, what are you thinking?

Scratching the beard again. Am I bored?

No way. That's so much fun.

Is the camera alive? She looks so beautiful.

Hey, camera, look at my muscle!

Impressed, aren't you?

Don't lie to me.

I know you are fond of me, Camera.

We have been spending so much time together.

Just you and me.

What's that?

Sure enough.

This was the shoulder trigger.

They are breaking my silence attempt.

(-)

I'm doomed.

Don't feel sad.

Everything's gonna be alright.

---

It can't rain all the time.

Damn noisy.

Not yet.

Yeah, breath.

Finally!

Still some tapping.

Let's wait and smile.

Smile.

And scratch our head.

Eye.

Eyebrows.

Fine.

Stretch.

That's not a fart!

That's the sound of hungriness.

So hungry.

Bearing it for you!

Cuty Beardy.

With or without beard.

Smile.

(no idea)

Staring at you.

Stretch

Your body.

Stretch your wrists.

That is not a fart, I said! You are a bit stubborn.

Stretch.

Again and again and over again.

OK, that's enough for the subtitles.

Just because I'm tired for now.

And I need to make subs for other languages.

You may not know it but making subtitles is a hard work.

Oh, by the way,

If you make it until here

thanks a lot for watching!

Also, thanks a lot for subscribing to this channel.

I wanted to make several special videos for 100k subs,

but didn't have enough energy.

Thank

you

always.

Good night!

and this is K9 Rash.

I've been with this department for eight years,

since October of 2010,

I have several family members that are police officers.

My grandfather was actually a sheriff's deputy

and I always listened to them tell me their stories

about the fun that they had on the streets,

the people that they met, the lives that they impacted,

so I knew at a young age that was something I wanted to do,

and every day they put on a uniform,

it's a new experience for them.

When they first opened up the position,

I've always loved working with dogs,

I've always been a dog lover since I was young,

so here was my opportunity.

The training is very extensive,

the canines go through a 12-week explosive odor

detection course before I'm even introduced to them.

Whenever K9 Rash discovers the presence

of an explosive odor, he'll sit and focus in

on the area where the odor's coming from,

staring directly at it, generally not moving.

Rash was one of the top dogs in the program.

He was so good at his job that usually

we would have to go first because whenever

any type of aid was placed, he would get

to it with almost little to no help from me.

He's just like any household pet, he's with me,

generally, 24 hours a day.

I provide all his care, food, play time,

usually when he's home with the family,

my son's always playing with him.

My wife loves him.

I just treat him like a regular household pet.

He's traveled with me everywhere that I go,

so he's pretty much my sidekick.

Every day I wake up, I have my dog with me and work is fun.

"Around the College" with the Inclusive Practices class - Duration: 3:02.

My name is Nate Stevenson and I'm assistant professor in a special

education program here at K.S.U. The class I teach is called inclusive

practices. So inclusive practices is all about helping students to recognize the

specific strategies, practices, routines, procedures that really create an

inclusive environment for students that struggle in general settings.

My name is Taylor Miller and i'm a mild to moderate special education major.

So we've learned a lot of different practices that we can implement when we

have our own classroom and on Tuesdays we meet in class and discuss some of

these practices and other things that we can implement and then on Thursdays we

go into classrooms and observe different teachers and how they implement some of

these practices and documented that.

My name is Kayla Nelson and I'm a special

education major. That class is awesome, we

learn a lot about the different

practices that are used and implemented in two different classrooms.

My name is Ayanna Casterlow, I am an early childhood education major with a minor in

mild to moderate special education. Dr. Stevenson has really helped us

step-by-step learn all the practices that we can use and then on Thursdays

the observations are really cool to observe how actual teachers use these

practices with children.

The really exciting thing about this class, for me,

is helping students to bridge the theory to practice gap so they learn about

evidence-based inclusive practices here they read about them, we watch videos, we

talk about examples and then out in schools they're able to see how these

things actually play out in reality and how teachers can modify those practices

to make them fit. There are specific contexts and the specific needs of their students.

My favorite part is going out observing and seeing what these teachers

do and how they can make their classroom run and I think I've gained a lot of

valuable knowledge from seeing that. I just love the special education program

and just working in it and there's so many good things in the program is... it's

phenomenal that the professor's really care about

you and want to see you succeed. They're fantastic.

Lord that I went in there and I got the kids out. It was like he gave me the strength

to knock down the door to get them out.

Him wearing his prosthetic legs and such vigorous activity on his legs caused him

to get a sore in his leg. So basically the sore got infected and it traveled to

the bone. He was transported here to Kindred where he's able to recover

comfortably.

That's phenomenal what you did and what we're going to award you today is the

Park County Fire Department Citizen Heroism Award. We thank you very much for

what you did that night saving those young children. He's doing a

Sony A7S III possible specifications and what we'd like to see [UPDATED] - MEGAPIXEL - Duration: 6:10.

The Sony A7S II was launched over two years ago back in September 2015 and rumours are

circulating of an impending update.

In fact, there was even a user guide for the Sony A7S III listed on Amazon in Germany with

a launch date (for the book) of 2nd July.

With this in mind, we've given some thought to what we'd like to see with the Sony A7S

III.

SENSOR.

The A7S line was originally billed as the low light and video model in the Sony A7 series

and it's proved extremely popular with videographers.

While Canon may be dragging its heel with 4K video, some manufacturers are starting

to think beyond it and turning their attention to 6K recording.

We'd like Sony to make that step and give the A7S III a 24Mp CMOS chip that's 6K enabled.

The Sony A7S II has maximum video resolution of 3840 x 2160, if the Mark III isn't 6K-enabled,

we'd like it to at least be capable of shooting Cinema 4K (4096 x 2160) – we think that's

a pretty safe bet as Sony will be keen to match, if not beat, Panasonic.

We're also anticipating that Sony will use its stacked CMOS sensor technology to maximise

the size of the photoreceptors (aka pixels) and boost image quality, especially in low

light conditions.

10-BIT COLOUR.

One aspect of the Panasonic GH5 that has really impressed professional videographers is the

presence of a 10-bit codec.

This extends the range of colour available making gradations smoother and allowing greater

scope for grading.

The Sony A7S II is only capable of 8-bit colour so the step-up to 10-bit would be appreciated.

FASTER READOUT AND PROCESSING.

Sony has proved it knows a thing or two about fast image processing with the Sony A9.

This isn't just achieved by the main processing engine, there's also memory on the imaging

chip itself to help with file output.

Any enhanced processor and on-chip memory will be essential to achieving the higher

resolution and bit rates.

Faster readout Will also help improve focusing speed and reduce rolling shutter (aka jello)

effect that distorts moving objects.

IMPROVED HANDLING.

One of the gripes we've had about the second generation of Sony's A7-series cameras is

the positioning of the video record button.

It's almost impossible to press it without introducing some wobble at the start or end

of your footage when you're holding the camera in your hands.

Sony corrected this with the A9, A7R III and A7 III so we're really hoping that they'll

do the same for the A7S III.

Something that I've fed-back to Sony a few times is that I'd like two function menus,

one for video and another for stills.

Sony affords a high level of customisation to the A7S II, but anyone who uses the camera

for stills and video will find they have to make a few compromises.

Having two Function menus would make life easier.

Sony's menu system is also notoriously long and complex.

The A9's menu is better than the A7-series but there's still room for improvement with

better, more logical segregation of features.

Naturally, we'd also like to see the mini-joystick that was introduced with the Sony A9 as it

really speeds-up setting AF point when the camera is held to your eye.

It's made it on to the A7R III, so we think it's in the bag.

VARI-ANGLE SCREEN.

Lots of people were expecting Sony to announce the A7S III at the BVE or NAB trade shows

in early 2018, but they've been and gone.

The longer Sony takes to introduce it, the more likely I think it is that some fundamental

changes are being made.

Perhaps this could include a vari-angle screen instead of the tilting unit that's on the

A7S II?

This would simplify vlogging and making solo presentations to the camera.

You could just flip-out the screen to the side and rely on the Face Detection (or Eye

AF) to keep the focus on your face while you present the video.

In the past, Sony has argued that a vari-angle screen is unnecessary because serious videographers,

the target audience for the A7S-series, will use an external monitor.

While there may be many occasions when they want to do that with the A7S III, there are

lots of occasions when people want to be able to downsize more.

It's also much quicker and easier to set-up.

The main mirrorless competition for the Sony A7S III, namely the Panasonic GH5 and GH5S,

both have vari-angle screens, and one of the big criticisms levelled at the Canon 5D Mark

IV by videographers is its fixed screen.

IMPROVED AUTOFOCUS.

Given its low-light credentials, you might expect the A7S II to have a fast, sensitive

autofocus (AF) system, but its 169-point contrast detection system is pretty poor in anything

other than ideal light.

You don't often need very fast focusing during recording with video, but you do want

it to be decisive.

A more sensitive phase detection system would be a fabulous addition to the A7S III's

feature set.

I might be getting a bit fanciful here, but it would be fantastic if it were possible

to set two AF points and specify a time and speed for the transition in focus.

This might be achieved via the menu or perhaps using a dedicated smartphone app and a Wi-Fi

or Bluetooth connection – or a touchscreen on the camera.

TOUCH-CONTROL.

Sorry if I've been like a broken record on this but touch-control really speeds-up

menu navigation and setting selection.

It's especially useful if you're shooting video as you can switch AF point silently

with a gentle tap on the screen.

The A9 and A7R III both have a touchscreen and although Sony has made limited use of

it for controlling those cameras, it comes in handy.

It could be especially useful with a video-centric camera because it lets you adjust settings

with a light touch on the screen, avoiding both sound and vibration during recording.
